Professor Lorrimor, the renowned investigator and arcanist, has died. You came to his home in the town of Ravengro to pay your respects, but quickly discovered there was more to the wily old man's death than met the eye...

My first thought is...

Rajuna.. / Rose
Dragomir / Karrik
Walter.. / Lem
Septimus / Theron

AND (if needed)...

Rajuna
Rose
Dragomir
Karrik
Walter
Lem
Septimus
Theron

Male Human (Varisian) Inquisitor 2

You know, maybe I should do a last minute switch out of my 'Valor' inquisition, since it seems like I'll always be in the back XD

OK, so a couple things that occurred to me. The bloody V is Splatter Man's MO. Splatter Man was a wizard of some ilk which means he might have had a familiar, and Walter and Vesmera spotted a red bird (that should have been asleep) near the blood-stained statue. So... perhaps the bird was a familiar, either for the Splatter Man or his copycat.

Also, Walter and Vesmera spotted a red bird on their date beneath the bridge. It might mean absolutely nothing. But given Vesmera talking about being 'different/odd', I'm kinda wondering if maybe she is a caster.

I've put together a doc comparing what we know of the 5 prisoners, if anyone wants a copy, just PM me.

Male Human (Varisian) Inquisitor 2

My guess is Rose was trying to say we could use this as an additional part of distracting Kendra from going into Harrowstone ;)

Gah, was this supposed to be something for Flori to look at? You know, because she has a full wizard/sorc spell list? Now I kind of wish I had brought it out earlier XD

Nope. Rose and/or Kendra are probably best-placed to sort it out. : )

Maybe Septimus might have something to add too.

Male Human (Varisian) Alchemist (Preservationist) 2

Hey all,

So yesterday and today are my serious work crunch days as I mentioned before joining. Wasn't able to get a post in edgewise at all and doubt I'll be able to get on in today, but it's possible. I'm just trying to play catch up at this point. It's not good timing, but unfortunately have very little control over it. I was in meetings from 6:30 am until 9:00 pm yesterday, with a "social" dinner that was essentially another meeting until midnight.

Anyhow.

As far as dissuading Kendra to come to Harrowstone, she already has a pretty strong dislike for Septimus, so it probably wouldn't hurt things if he had to be the messenger. The mere fact that he's coming along is probably enough to deter her!

Other things we need Septimus's expertise/advice on prior to Harrowstone? Although I don't have time to post, he's definitely going to need an info dump on what you've done so far. You don't have to do it in character, of course - but if we assume you guys sit him down and tell him about the last few days I'll write a post with some reaction/questions in-character.

Male Human (Varisian) Alchemist (Preservationist) 2

Also - depending on time (and donation of party gold) I can begin to churn out any potions I have in my formula book that we think might help (cure light wounds, disguise self, enlarge person, etc.

Making alchemical items takes a bit longer, but I can work on those as time permits as well. It's definitely something Septimus would do (oh, his eyes are going to bulge at the Prof's alchemy setup). Cyn, we may want to have a sidebar about alchemical crafting, as I know there was some groundrule discussion on this earlier on and I'm not entirely sure where it ended up. From my experience, alchemical crafting takes a pretty absurd amount of time, even with the little perks and feats alchemists have to help them out.

Oh - and one last thing. Septimus will make knowledge checks (arcana, dungeoneering, and nature as appropriate, being his trained ones) to try to learn anything he can about the general dangers of the wild and/or dungeons in this part of Ustalav in an attempt to get a "lay of the land" so to speak.

Karrik wrote:

He tosses a deferential nod in Kendra's direction.
Karrik wrote:
Karrik regards the lock pick, "I don't disagree that there's an appropriate time for subtlety. "… maybe we should handle something else first." Karrik takes the two intervening steps towards Septimus, sticking one gray, meaty hand out for a shake, "My name's Karrik." His tone and direct look clearly ask, And your business here is?

Oh, you have no idea how tempted I am to write a now boys, there's no need to fight over li'l ol' me post here. ; )

Well THAT would be a hell of twist to the game. :)

I didn't grow you up like some of the folks here, and I didn't go to some fancy school with you like young Walter here and I didn't get no second chance from your Da' like Karrik here, and I wasn't stabbed through the heart to be saved from being a bloodsucker like Rose here...

Now if I am prepared to throw myself in front of a blade for you, can you honestly say that these folk who owe your Da a debt so deep they dropped whatever they were doin' to see him put to rest won't do the same? And they won't be so 'rational' as me - they'll do somethin' stupid fer sure if they see you in risk.

How you gonna feel if one of us eats dirt to satisfy your desire feel like you're avenging your Da' when you don't even KNOW whats up there?, he asked.

He looked at her and then swung his finger to Rajuna.

How would you feel if HE was to die protecting you?

Now that took balls. : D

I will have to think awhile on what Kendra's reaction would be. More nice work!

Yep, you know the game is awesome when just reading the RP posts at Kendra's house DISCUSSING going to Harrowstone is very entertaining. Obviously, we are all looking forward to the actual delve into the prison itself. But I'm really enjoying just reading everyone's interactions at the house, honestly.

Male Human Oracle 2

I'm so glad we're out of research and everyone is back. Karrik talking smack to Rajuna and Dragomir going full Jayne Cobb has been the most entertaining thing I've read since... the last entertaining thing you guys wrote in this PBP.

I am kind of sad that I didn't get a chance to post Walter's reaction to Rose putting herself down-- but, unfortunately, it'd be mostly internal since Kendra said what he was thinking (to read the walter rendition add approx this: 2x"Um," 3x"..." and 4x"Er", and 1x"Well, uh...") and Walter's not forward enough to give her a talk about believing in the me that believes in you.

Truth be told your characterisation of Kendra got me fired up so much I put myself in Dragomir's shoes and said '**** it, she needs to hear this'.

The Raj bit? Believe it or not that was a deliberate dirty tactic - I figured the bar room brawler in Dragomir wasn't above hitting below the belt.

Male Halfling Cleric (Evangelist)/ 2

Hey Cyn, would I be allowed to take this as a feat but have it affect my Cleric spells instead of "Bard Spells"?

Spellsong

You can blend the power of your performance and spellcasting.

Prerequisites: Cha 13, bardic performance class ability, able to cast 1st-level spells.

Benefit: You can combine your bardic performance and your spellcasting in two ways. First, you can conceal the activity of casting a bard spell by masking it in a performance. As a swift action, you may combine your casting time of a spell with a Perform check. Observers must make a Perception or Sense Motive check opposed by your Perform check to realize you are also casting a spell. This uses 1 round of your bardic performance ability, regardless of the spell's casting time.

Second, as a move action, you can use 1 round of bardic performance to maintain a bard spell with a duration of concentration. You can cast another spell in the same round you are using bardic magic to maintain concentration; if you do this, your concentration on the maintained spell ends when you end the bardic performance the spell is part of.

Also, if so, how would that interact with Harmonious Spell?

Great stuff... I figure with the passage of time we'll grow to agree on other things too but for the moment I'm happy with this 'win'

Just want to confirm that I've been keeping up with the great developments in the gameplay thread but that it's killer to try to write a decent post from a phone. Tomorrow night my personal work-related hell is done and I should be able to settle in for some posting catchup either at that time or Saturday morning.

I'm surprised the 'knifey von knife' comment didnt get any response.

DAPPER HALF-ORC MAGUS

I was actually a little confused by that line since Rajuna hadn't taken much of a stance on that issue yet. It was Karrik who was actively and openly against bringing Kendra.

Or did I mis something?

Grand Lodge

He's got big arse knives strapped to his arms.

I could say 'Mack the Knife', or 'Sam the Slasher' but given its Ustalav...

It could be a personal thing for me too... I find an identifying part of a person and just tag them with a nickname based on that

Dragomir Vuk wrote:

Dragomir, I am a very patient man. First, that line cracked me up! Second, Raj has a response for that and I'll drop it at the right moment. :) In the middle of this fracas, it would just seem weird.

BTW, Walter, your Monsters post is maybe the best thing since the invention of sliced bread or women.

No, I realize he has knives, and I realize why the nickname (which made me chuckle) makes sense for Rajuna. I didn't understand why you referenced Raj in that part of your argument -- since Raj hadn't (at that point) really openly taken a stance against Kendra going.

No big deal, i was just pointing out my initial confusion. Your general argument you put to Kendra was pretty much spot-on.

Karrik wrote:

I think there has been a bit of bleed-over between what has been read (but wouldn't be known by the characters) in the Game thread, what is character knowledge in the Game thread, and what has been said in the OOC. Cyn did mention that we didn't have to do the entire discussion IC so maybe this kind of bleed is a natural result.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind getting one thing cleared up - what do the characters know about the Kendra/Raj situation?

Dragomir kind of alluded to it in the Game thread with his character choice on the "how would you feel if he died?" question, and then mentioned it here in the OOC as well. Aside from the occasional look passed between Kendra/Raj and possibly Kendra's glare during her 'Prince Charming' speech, I don't think there have been any indicators to the other characters that anything has happened... and I don't recall any Sense Motive checks against Kendra or Raj to confirm any reasonable suspicions. So, my assumption has been that no one knows and Raj, being the private person he is and concerned for Kendra's reputation, would try to keep it that way for as long as possible. He always refers to her as Miss Lorrimor for a reason.

However, Cyn wants to play this - whether as a secret or an open secret that everyone in the house knows about - that's fine. I'd just like to know. I don't think it requires any retconning because Dragomir could have picked Raj 'at random' or because he is known to be Kendra's knife-fighting instructor... i.e. there is some sort of relationship that he could use for his 'low blow'.

Male Human Oracle 2
Dragomir Vuk wrote:

I read it as "knifey knife knife" when I read it aloud, which was probably the best spoken "typo" possible.

Also thanks for the praise (and subsequent dis/agreement). I was conflicted about whether or not Lem was a "monster" but then I flipped through his sheet and saw that he was completely willing to have a dude with a crossbow ace a thug that he knew by name and Lem even had had close relations with his guy's family. Lem is a cold-hearted killer underneath his purple butterfly armor. Don't be confused.

Male Human (Varisian) Inquisitor 2

So, who else thinks we might get kicked out of the house by Kendra? Hah XD

Nah, I'm thinking Raj's romance may have just gone south... and gotten whacked by a north-bound train.

Hey folks. Just a quick post to say I don't think I'm going to get much posting done this weekend. Lots to do at home. But I'll be back on Monday. : )

Well, Monday my time, which is Sunday night your time. : )

I actually had to get my wife's opinion on what to do with Kendra now--she and I ended up agreeing on a course of action, and you can all relax; you'll still have free room and board. And whoever came up with the idea of Flori sticking around to patrol with Kendra deserves a pat on the back. Thanks. : )

Hope you all have great weekends. : D

On the romance thing, I haven't seen any kiss or such but lets face it, Raj is a bit flustered around her and Dragomir has misinterepted (albeit correctly) your closeness to Kendra during the research session, and the jokes made when you came back from the 'Scroll' shop.

I haven't made any sense motive rolls to be sure but Dragomir is a trained observer of people and has played a series of hunches.

I don't doubt however, that there may be some bleed through too. In a RP session all the stuff happens very quickly and the memories as to what you know and don't know is easier to keep together... on a pbp the memories of events gets blurred over days and weeks.

I will probably be unable to post on Wednesday here too (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning US time) as it's a public holiday. But I'll see if I can get a post or two in before the day starts. : )

And now, off to play with some concrete... : D

I'm in China for another week - evidently the Firewall of China doesn't have an issue with Paizo from my hotel or work.

Once back in Aust, I'll be there for all of 4 days or so before I need to take off for 2 weeks in Sapporo (again work related).

Hey Cyn, can I retcon that I also asked the church for an aspergillum? Lem dumping holy water around trying to exorcise ghosts is cool, but him sermonizing and flinging holy water "officially" just seems a lot cooler.

Hey folks, hope you're enjoying your weekends. : )

I'm happy for it to happen sooner if you're all ready for it, but in the absence of any opinions to the contrary, I'll have you all shivering out the front of Harrowstone on Thursday morning my time (Wednesday night US time).

PS: the concrete was not terribly cooperative. : \

You can ask...lemme check if they have one.

1d100 ⇒ 53

Sorry, looks like you're out of luck. The church at Ravengro isn't terribly militarised, so they're unlikely to have an aspergillum of the sort you want. They will have an ordinary ceremonial one, which you will be allowed to borrow--but it has the fragile quality (becomes broken on an attack roll of a natural 1).

The cost of the aspergillum (for your own record-keeping purposes, in case you break it!) is 5gp; it's not as sturdy as a battle aspergillum, but it does have some intricate work on it.

Male Halfling Cleric (Evangelist)/ 2

That's perfect--I actually wanted just a regular aspergillum anyway, not a battle one, so it's all good.

As for Harrowstone, I can wait until Wednesday my time if you prefer, but if you're wondering if everyone is ready to start sooner, I'm ready to go, FWIW. Either way is good for me.
