Good point Karrik. Why build from scratch when I can repurpose with just a few name and location changes. Now where is that Find/Replace "UU" --> "Kendra"...

Ha! Kendra's not quite that forward...but she is assertive enough to know what she wants. : )

Welcome, Septimus! You realize that any time you use your mutagen I will picture you as Ghost Rider now, right? ;-)
Cyn, I'm going to make the AA rolls for me and Flori for brevity's sake. If you'd prefer to roll for her, please ignore the roll.

Sorry, the moment I submitted that post I got pulled away and just not have a chance to post it. I'll just do it here.

Hey, no worries. Thanks for letting us know you're busy too, that helps. : )

I'm going to try to be as un-cheesy as possible by taking care to depict the terrible and nauseating nature of said preserved creatures twisting and bending into shape as they spring forth from a jar of the Golarion equivalent of formaldehyde.
Lol!

Walter and I both have the amazing power to make Sherlock Holmesian leaps in logic that are absolutely incorrect and likely to make people cry or hit themselves.
Heh! Don't be too hard on yourself--like I said, I was being deliberately misleading because that's precisely the impression I wanted Walter to get. ; )
Dragomir Vuk |
Thats it - Dragomir is changing to 'Lynx' aftershave and deodorant products.
Joking aside this is gonna get funny when we get out of this place and into a decent sized city... Dragomir will need his ashes hauled well and truly after a month here.
A night of carousing and wenching? Huzzah!
Septimus Smythe |
A not-so illustrious introduction to Mr. Smythe has been made over yonder in the Gameplay thread. Many thanks to Cynarion for the picture-perfect setup.
Edit: Forgot to mention - I'm really looking forward to gaming with all of you. Doing my best to catch up on both threads, but hey, if I'm not caught up the introduction will be all the more authentic. Let me know if you catch any stylistic concerns with my posts as I'm still getting a feel for the group's conventions.

So, who's excited about gearing up and heading into Harrowstone? : D
And it's probably worth asking you as players how you feel about Kendra coming with you; I think she will want to carry on in her father's footsteps. I figure your characters will get the opportunity to react when she brings it up, but I should also ask you as players what you want.
Hope you all had a fun weekend. : )

Weekend of hardcore boardgaming (yes, in China)... and now I face a week of hardcore work.
We still have a little more research to do... and likely a nights rest before the 'big push'.
Not sure how I feel about her coming in to Harrowstone... on one hand? Could be cool... on the other?, we are a) meant to keep her safe and b) its gonna mess us all up if she dies so we're gonna occassionally pull some stupid 'protect the princess' stuff.
I for one am gonna enjoy Harrowstone. I have some character RP I have been dying to do.
Karrik |
Karrik wouldn't want her to come. She's proven useful, but one of the Professor's requests was to keep her safe. Taking her into Harrowstone is about the opposite of that. Yes, there is the possibility of something happening to her if she's left home. But there is the certainty of something happening to her if she comes along.
I say we get the sheriff in on this one. "Hey, for the sake of the Old Man, can you keep a close eye on the his daughter while we're doing the investigation you're unable to?"
We don't have to say it antagonistically. There is a very real exchange of services here, if nothing else. We scratch his back (and potentially help him look good as unofficial deputies), if he scratches ours.
Just my thought.
Plus, with 8 people? We have a strong enough combination of skills as-is. Another caster (especially an important NPC) is as much a liability as it is a boon.

Posted what hopefully serves as a good hook to immediately integrate Septimus, but unsure to what extent I'll be able to follow up on it over the next couple of days due to work travel. There's also the interesting question of how Kendra will react, as she and Septimus have some history (thanks Cyn for planting that idea in my head).
Also, woo-hoo at a nat 20 in my first set of rolls. Of course, that comes along with a 5, so about par for the course. I guess the Septimus isn't very convincing about knowing more about Harrowstone when hungover, but can readily display his knowledge of dungeons and abberations even with a pounding headache.
I mean, he's not that great of a liar to begin with. Which is why he tends to be run out of town so quickly...maybe one of these days he'll take some skill points in bluff.

Despite the fact that April 15 is 'tax day' in the US, my weekend was pretty good.
So...Yes, let's raid Harrowstone!
While I'd like to see Kendra develop more and having her along could present some interesting RP opportunities, Raj (and I) would be against taking her along to Harrowstone. The nut of it, as Karrik mentioned, is we are supposed to keep her safe. Taking her into harm's way just doesn't seem prudent. To my mind, part of ensuring her safety is keeping her off the Way's radar. In a small town, people will notice when Doc's aggrieved daughter up and disappears for days on end, particularly with a band of strangers who had some connection to her father. I think, for safety's sake, we want to avoid the appearance of Kendra taking on her father's mantle for as long as possible. Whoever dropped a gargoyle on dear-old-dad may think she needs the same treatment.
Putting on my player hat... 8 is a big enough group and I'd be concerned that, given all the deference we afford Kendra already, she'd have a heavy influence on how we handle Harrowstone - becoming a de facto 'leader' of sorts. I'm leery of NPCs in a tactical leadership position.

It is kind of hilarious that Theron got a 1 on his sense motive roll, and was still able to see through that bluff ;)
But yea, I think I just set things up so that either Septimus can say "But wait, I know the professor! I was called on as well!", or maybe Kendra can say "Wait, I know him!". Whatever works XD
Septimus Smythe |
RP-wise, I expect there to be a fair bit of hand-wringing and scrutiny around getting Septimus to join up with the group, so no problem there!
Cyn, I'll wait to see if Kendra has a reaction here. Otherwise Septimus may play his knowledge of the Professor as a trump attempt even though he knows its likely to draw Kendra's ire. He's a desperate man at the end of his pathetic rope!

I agree with this. I want to say that she's the only person everyone in the party is looking out for, so she'd pretty much end up de-facto VIP. She'd also have to be assigned a "handler" (for RP reasons, Raj) so that she's covered from being ambushed, doesn't fall into traps, doesn't wander away, doesn't get flank-corner-killed, and I don't think Raj wants to sit around babysitting Kendra instead of running around jumping off of things and rolling under stuff and stabbing monsters in the head and so on.
Let's leave Kendra at home, where she's more safe.
cynarion |
Thanks for the thoughts folks. I had been toying with the idea of Kendra becoming more active in the campaign, to the point where someone could take her as a cohort if they wanted to. But, like you say, there were two things I wanted to avoid: (1) overcomplicating a game that already has 8 PCs, and (2) the appearance of a Mary Sue/GMPC type character.
So while Kendra will likely still voice her desire to come with you into Harrowstone--because if I had her do otherwise I would be doing her character a disservice--I will take your preferences into account when you tell her 'no'. : )
Of course, there's still the question of her whatever-it-is with Raj... ; )

Fixed that little typo for ya and solved your conundrum. :)
Truthfully, I am curious to see how the relationship plays out - particularly given her ominous line about "leaving him behind" - but I'll be working at forwarding that plotline in small bits so it doesn't slow down the pace for everyone else.
Rajuna Two-Fangs |
I just re-read it to make sure I wasn't in the wrong. It reads to me as if Kendra will fall for Mr. X and then have/choose to leave him behind. I hope I've got that right, otherwise my 'apple blossom' scene is less poignant.
Don't steal my poignancy, Karrik. :P

Just wanted to say that I'm excited about Harrowstone and I agree with having Kendra stay home. I just haven't been posting because Lem is busy researching.
So, if we go to Gibbs' house and I punch him out, will that give us enough XP to hit level 2? ;-)
Hah! Dunno; I don't have a statblock for Gibs, so I can't tell you what his CR is. ; )

Excellent! An injured alchemically invisible half-dragon warrior 5 it is. Who knew it could be so easy? ; )
