Grimaldus sets to separating the bodies from their heads while Odo and Oronia consider what else they might do. Oronia feels sure that dismemberment is only a stopgap measure. To be certain they will not rise as ghouls and piece themselves back together, they must be destroyed utterly; either with fire or acid.

Tresca sets to work whipping up enough acid to take care of the bodies and soon the corpses have been reduced to a pool of denatured proteins and lipids.

For completeness sake

You are seated in the main hall of the Grand Lodge of Absalom, waiting for the arrival of Absalom’s newest venture-captain, a tall, dark-haired and olive-skinned Varisian woman named Eliza Petulengro. Renowned for her composure under pressure and the author of more than two dozen Pathfinder Chronicles entries, she appears in the hall suddenly, a stack of chronicles in her arms, and looks you over before speaking.

The Venture-Captain takes a deep breath before launching into her briefing, “My greatest pupil, Pathfinder Bodriggan Wuthers, has gone missing. He followed a cleric contact back to Wuthers’s home city of Oppara to work on a massive dig beneath the House of the Immortal Son, Oppara’s famed opera house and once temple to the dead god, Aroden. That was a year ago. He sent monthly reports, hoping to see their publication in a chronicle, before all contact dried up a few months back. I’m worried something has gone wrong, and the Society has a vested interest in the artifact he was researching and seeking. We want you to travel to Oppara and find Wuthers. We’d like to know exactly what he was seeking, too, since he neglected to inform us through his monthly correspondence. He hinted only that the cleric of Irori he was working with told him the object was the world’s greatest ‘living’ artifact — whatever that means."

“I have only a few tidbits of information to pass to you before you go: the House of the Immortal Son is nearly impossible to access. It took Wuthers months and countless bribes to get where he did. For you, I have a much simpler idea. Go to an opera, wait for an opportunity, and then exploit it to find Wuthers and his dig site."

She takes a moment to appraise your trappings. “Be sure to wear something festive — the Taldan nobility are arrogant on their best days and if you arrive at the opera dressed like that,” she waves her hands at you, “they’ll surely lose your tickets or regret to inform you that the opera house is oversold. Your travel is arranged, you will have time to gather your gear and resupply before you depart. Are there any questions before you make your preparations?"

Like most season 0 scenarios, this one normally intros in flashback format, but I prefer giving the PCs a chance to ask questions if they have them. You may roll to Gather Information (Diplomacy) on the missing Pathfinder, Bodriggan Wuthers as well as The House of the Immortal Son when you are ready to proceed.

"To Oppara, eh? I would like the chance to take in the opera. Do you know the name of the cleric with which Wuthers was working? Was Wuthers in Oppara on Pathfinder business?

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

"You will get your chance. I'm afraid I do not know the name of the cleric. He was indeed on official business. Pathfinders must often work under the cloak of secrecy, but it can make following up difficult. I'd never expect Bodriggan to fall out of touch. Frankly, I fear the worst. If he has met with foul play, I will want to know his fate. I trust you to deal with any opposition as you judge appropriate."

Your inquiries quickly reveal that Bodriggan Wuthers is a Pathfinder of some renown. Though he began as an orphan of unknown ancestry, found 20 years ago on the doorstep of the Pathfinder Lodge of Taldor’s capital, Oppara. He was raised in an orphanage, but the Taldan Pathfinders made it a point to look in on him from time to time, encouraging the boy’s curiosity and pushing him toward the life of the vagabond scholar. They got what they desired. When Wuthers turned 16, he left the orphanage behind and traveled to Absalom to join the Pathfinder Society. After a few years of training and following Venture-Captain Eliza Petulengro, Wuthers settled easily into his routine, traveling Avistan and Garund seeking greater glory for himself and the Society through treasure hunting. He quickly made a name for himself, battling through a host of demon-possessed apes in the Screaming Jungle at age 18 to recover the Garls Harp, an Azlanti musical instrument thought lost to time and memory. His tale of that find saw his first of many reports appear in the Pathfinder Chronicles and his fame as a Pathfinder was permanently sewn into the fabric of the Society by his many deeds.

In regards to your PC's dress: though the House of the Immortal Son has a reputation for opulence and excess, it never turns away anyone with any obvious amount of money or fame. Pathfinders are a source of great discussion in Taldor and the nobility love to read of their exploits and adventures. Everyone will attend the opera for free (regardless of how they’re dressed), but anyone wearing less than a courtier’s outfit and 50 gp or more of jewelry suffers a –2 penalty on all Charisma-based checks when dealing with any Taldan nobles throughout the scenario.

A man is seated at the table garbed in a simple black Kimono with red trimmings. His face is adorned by a short cut beard that is more white than black but he is lean and wiry moving with the grace of an athlete and his hungry eyes look much younger than the remainder of his appearance would suggest. For now he remains quite watching and observing his surroundings.

Seated next to Turan is a woman who looks ready to go to the opera this instant. Her complexion, poise and clothing mark her as a Taldan, as well. She is dressed in practical breeches, with a fine silken blouse and a coat in green velvet, cut according to the latest fashion. She hasn't been cheap on jewelry either, with a golden brooch, an elaborate comb in her hair and several golden bracelets dangling on her wrist. She has two fans stuck in her belt, ornately painted by the looks of them.

Oppara. This could prove 'interesting'...

The woman listens intently to the venture-captain's briefing. She seems empathetic towards the plight of the woman who hasn't heard from her pupil in months, but there's also something else showing in her face: excitement for a new assignment. Just before she speaks, there's a twinkle in her eye and the slightest hint of a smile, like something funny that's only known to her. "The opera. That should be interesting. It's been a while since I was last in Oppara, but I trust that I'll find my way around the nobility there. I'm also sure that we can get this band into something suitable for the occasion," she concludes with a small that's not unfriendly towards the diversity of her companions.

Thinking for a moment on the information they've been giving, she adds a couple of questions. "Do you have a description of Wuthers? So we'll recognize him if we find him. And do you know the names of any of his contacts in the opera, the ones who aided him in getting in?"

Our group hits things. :)

The slightly-over-six-and-one-half-foot-tall, half(?)-orc with the crimson red mohawk that put him over seven, tries not to look nervous in the main hall. The last time he had met a female who owned such a 'home' was after a particularly bloody battle royal and the woman had wished to mate with him--the victor but the female and his owner at the time could not settle on a price. There he stood naked and still bruised until they were finally asked to leave.

When told to be seated he at first sat upon the rug not realizing that the seats were for one such as him. Embarrassed, he got up and did not sit again. Partly this was because he did not think that the small chairs could support his three-hundred pounds of weight (for Ukou was a burly collection of green muscles build upon more muscles built upon a prodigious frame covered in ink, fur and leathers) and partly because it looked uncomfortable.

Ukou picked up on many of the words but 'opera'? What was that? The red elf-blood mentioned he had harbored a foundling opera. And the female had mentioned they were to journey to its 'house'. Looking at them both he could not imagine that an opera was much to be feared.

He had been to Oppara before, at night in a covered wagon and again in some hole that smelled of lizards and death. The people there were small like birds.

'Deal with any opposition.' He knew what that meant.

What's a man doing with a purse? And what does he mean 'properly dress himself'? He has breeches on to conceal his clan gemstones, like Ukou. Gorum's blade! He's even wearing a shirt!

Ukou was mostly raised by humans.

I am hopeful that you will manage to not offend the Taldan nobles - easily slighted as they are - but might I suggest you let others take the lead in any diplomatic efforts we might need?"

The blonde man on her right, Aznive eyes up and down. giving him a small bow of her head by way of greeting. "A most excellent suggestion, sir. I think you'll look dashing in proper evening wear. What was that he was babbling? Does he think I speak Tengu? Or was it Auran, perhaps? I'll just... Oh heavens, it's an eye? Gross!

Aznive keeps her face neutral as she tries not to look at the thing on Zoge's forehead, nodding as if she's understood. She puts a finger on her lips and gives the Tengu a short wink, as if to indicate it'll be their little secret.

I just reread my introduction and I think it could have been more clear than it was. Aznive is a Kitsune, but she tries to pass as human and will rarely be seen in her natural fox-like form. I've taken a feat for her (Realistic Likeness) that allows her to take any human form, instead of a 'fixed' human form. With some ranks in Disguise and Bluff, she's taken on the persona of a Taldan noblewoman for the last few years. Folks with high Perception might notice something is off, but I don't think there's any clues of my Kitsune-hood yet.

The Venture-Captain hands you a sketch of Wuthers to help you identify him, if he should be unable to identify himself when you find him, but she has no names to share.

"The opera is entitled, Among the Living, and you'll have the privilege to attend it's debut performance. I look forward to your review. Go, and report back to me directly upon your return to Absalom.”

Looks like we have everyone! As you finalize your purchases, please look upon that opera title with utmost irony.

Aznive almost chokes on her drink when she sees Ukou working on his warpaint. The wine nearly comes out her nose and she starts a hearty laugh. As she recovers, Aznive quickly apologizes to Venture-Captain Petulengro. "I am sorry for such an outburst given the circumstances, but I hope you can see the humor in the situation."

Well, won't we be a pretty picture? I'm sure we'll give the nobles something to talk about... But how on earth are we going to escape notice long enough to search for the dig site? Seems like we'll have to worry about that when we get there.

"Maybe some introductions are in order, by the way. I'll start: I am Aznive of the house Demiral. As some of you might have guessed, Taldor isn't unfamiliar to me. I hail from Cassomir. If I may make some assumptions, it would seem most of you know how to handle yourself in a fight. My own areas of expertise lie more in subterfuge and diplomacy. However, that doesn't mean I'm defenseless. Even when unarmed, I might add. If we ever find ourselves in a fight and any of you can provide some distraction, I think you'll find I can pull my weight. Also, if it ever gets that far, I usually carry a healing wand and a healing potion in my handbag. I can't use the wand myself, but in case of emergency maybe one of you could use it to fix us up?"

Aznive checks up on her equipment, showing the wand and potion to the others in the process. I think most of this will fit in my purse for the opera without looking weird. I could hide the dagger if I'm wearing a dress, but that would be quite impractical for trouncing around a dig site. We'll just leave that at my belt. And I'll have to ditch the bow, probably.

Your newly acquainted team concludes the mission briefing and sets off to gather gear and meet up at the docks. Though Absalom is the largest city in the world, it rests upon the Isle of Kortos and all who journey to Taldor must sail the Inner Sea. The voyage is plagued by turbulent waters, but is otherwise uneventful. When you arrive at Westport, the sun setting to the west gleams red-gold off the gilded domes and glittering spires of Oppara's skyline. Passing through the Westport district requires navigating the narrow warrens of inns, bars, brothels, gambling houses, drug dens, and moneylenders, but that is true of most every port. It is nearly dark as you find your way to your lodgings and as the inky darkness begins to press in, you look up at the sudden appearance of bright points of light above your heads. They spread and grow, filling the purple sky like stars, but their light is closer. The gilded city shines at night as well, lit by thousands of lanterns strung between the white stone buildings and towers. The flawless, pristine architecture reflects their light, glowing as if lit from within.

Travel is tiring, so it is good you are given a night to rest and put yourselves back to rights. Some of you don new finery as you prepare to face a new kind of mission. A night at the opera. The city has been abuzz over tonight's new offering and the excitement is nearly palpable. Even the common people with no hope of procuring seats are enthusiastic, many of them gawking at the strange and interesting assortment of tourists. Some performing their minor arts for tips from eager and appreciative hedonists, others still hawking their wares.

Once a temple to Aroden, the House of the Immortal Son has, since his death, been Taldor’s most opulent and expensive opera house. It is a large, windowless, cylindrical building made of polished marble and granite and surrounded by thick, finely-carved pillars. Built in the earliest traditional styles of Aroden temples, the opera house lacks windows and its roof is a complicated piece of stone statuary that replicates the holy symbol of Aroden, a steady winged eye gazing forever toward the heavens.

Everything your eye meets as you enter the ten foot tall double doors that make up the grand entry of the House of the Immortal Son speaks of extravagance, both in structure and substance. Your toes sink deliciously into sumptuous carpets and every surface has been polished to a high shine. High above your heads a crystal chandelier sparkles, casting tiny little rays of prismatic light to dance across everyone and everything beneath it. And what a parade of interesting characters come to the opera in Oppara! The Taldan nobility dominates the crowd, many of them displaying a foppish dedication to the latest fashions that borders on the grotesque. One woman wears a wig that appears enchanted with a continuous revolution of prestidigitation as it fades into a new color about every minute or so. It seems pets must be allowed inside as well as an interesting looking gnome passes by, riding upon an ostrich with periwinkle plumage to locate his box seats.

You are subject to a fair amount of looks yourselves. Those of you who dressed for the occasion get little more than a passing glance, but those who could or would not conform draw looks of disdain from some as they look down their noses over their fancy opera glasses. But whenever an onlooker spies an exposed wayfinder, well they glance soon again, a bit more curiously. Pathfinders are apparently interesting, however they dress.

Your seats are on the ground floor and nearly as far from the stage as is possible, compliments of the Society. Filled with classic church pews now covered in the finest silks and cushions, the main room of the opera house is what you’d expect from a temple turned-theater. Much iconography dedicated to Aroden remains here in addition to the trappings of a dedicated theater. Soon the audience is all seated and the music swells, launching into the debut performance of Among the Living.

As the story plays out, you gather that it’s an epic tale of a lone Ulfen warrior named Victory who sails to the ends of Golarion, crashes off the edge of the world, and finds himself in a gothic paradise where he falls in love with the undead queen of a jungle kingdom. It’s melodramatic, over-acted, gaudy, and tasteless — just the sort of affair Taldor’s wealthy screams to attend. As yet another twirling dancer in a brown costume festooned with bright pink, flowing silk scarves spins across the jungle set at the front of the stage, the orchestra reaches a screeching crescendo that crashes the entire opera to a halt. The dancers stand quietly for a moment, breathing heavily and listening to the scattered applause across the obviously bored Taldan audience. Suddenly, a sound like a thousand gongs shakes the entire building to its very foundation and the audience murmurs in a mixture of delight and fear. The actors and orchestra, however, suddenly flee the stage, disappearing behind the curtains.

Hmm, that seems odd... (Performance Check DC 12):
As something of an artist yourself, you like to give performers the benefit of the doubt, but it would not take a virtuoso to determine that the music, vocals, and dancing of Among the Living is amateurish at best. Maybe something isn't right here...

Have bought the nesscary clothing and jewelry to interact with Nobilty. I also got a wand of Cure Light with prestige and properly outfitted my character while lvling him up properly. Also note the poofy clothes make an excellent place to hide Serene.

I honestly expected better than this. Although I guess the work of an amateur does have it's own sense of beauty.

Turan understands little of art or opera but was pleasantly surprised by the presence of a mighty hero and lightly clad dancers. As the show ends in a cacaphony of noise the large man turns to his more culturally savy neighbors and flashes them an inquiring look.

An opera is a just a show with singing! Someone should have said.
By turns Ukou turns down offers to help move large, heavy objects in the outlying chambers and encouragements to join by turns the cast on stage as a barbaric north lander or savage jungle hunter.

Before the show starts, he takes his boots off and squeezes the carpet between his toes.

During an intermission one gnome wizard, Selvenious by name, comments on his 'most excellent COZ-play(?)' and whips up an illusion of their meeting with a strange, extendable wand.

"What do you think?" Asked the little man.
"Uhh."
"Likewise." The gnome said cheerfully retracting his wand before he and his strange, walking bird wandered back to the gnome's seat.

Perception DC 7:

Aznive seems anxious during their voyage and spends a lot of time alone in her cabin. She can be heard talking even though she's alone, as if she's talking to herself or rehearsing her lines. Her demeanor changes as they arrive in Oppara and have left the Westport district. As the lanterns are turned on, so seems a fire inside Aznive to ignite. The young woman seems at home in a place such as this, but it's also obvious that she has little fondness for the Taldan nobility and their shallow games. She dashes through the city, fluttering from hawker to amateur performer. She freely spends silvers when the performer amuses her and buys some trinkets for any of her companions who might take them, offering them with an deep bow and an obviously overacted "fair sir" or "my kind prince".

As they approach the opera, she offers her arm to Ukou with a generous and sincere bow. "Ukou, would you do me the honor of escorting me on this occasion?" Assuming he agrees, she lets herself be led into the House of the Immortal Son, her small figure gliding alongside the mountain of a man. Inside the opera house, she doesn't know where to look, to soak in all the luxury and grandure. As much as she tries to keep her composure and play the part, her gaze always seems to be drawn to some new fancy.

Only when they take their seats, does Aznive regain a bit of her wits. She makes sure that she is seated right on one end of their group, so that she can either confirm or deny allegiance to the Pathfinders, whatever would suit any story she might have to make up during the night.

Performance (Act), take 10: 10 + 7 = 17

She settles in for the opera with eager eyes, but her mood gradually worsens during the performance. Is this it?! Taldan culture is often tasteless, but at least they have style! And they won't settle for anything but the best. This is definately not the best. I don't know who funded this opera, but he's going to lose a lot of standing from this. Amateurs!

Perception, take 10: 10 + 5 = 15

Aznive's mood is softened by seeing Ukou besides her. She thinks for a moment to offer him her handkerchief, but then thinks better of it and covertly tries not to look at him during those scenes (while still taking the occasional peek, which makes her feel all gooey inside).

"ah, was that meant to happen, but can one of you tell me why could they not be together. ..if that was me I would just have fought harder to keep her no?"

I have no ranks in performance and since it's not a dc 10 I don't think I can roll

The terrible gonging seems to have been a signal as a few beats later, you hear the tell-tale sound of invaders crashing against the doors leading off from the main theater. Several of the patrons scream out in startled surprise and then look embarrassed, as if they have overreacted and this is surely just another dramatic device, meant to heighten the excitement. Others look about them unsure. The houses' lights are still lowered for the performance and as the crashing sound comes again, more cries of alarm erupt from your fellow opera-goers as instinct begins to override denial. Many around you are standing now, straining to see something reassuring in the gloom of the darkened theater. Some have decided their seats are no longer safe and leap up, knocking over pews in the process and rush for the open area of the aisles.

You will have two full rounds to prepare before the doors are breached and the light level needs to be addressed. Even though the other patrons are not represented on the map, you are in a panicky crowd, so all movement in here will be hampered and count for double (every 5 feet costs you 10) and you cannot take 5 foot steps. I have added a Current Encounter Map and you can find the link at the top of all pages and on your campaign tab. It is in slideshow format and on the first page, you'll find an opera house image to help visualize the grandeur and a dice block where I would like you to enter your character's name and initiative modifier. The encounter map is on the second page and it's big so you will likely want to use the zoom function to see.

The darkness means little to one of orc blood. Ukou rises to his feet and takes in the scene around him. He pulls his axe (a common accessory, or so it seems, at the finer opera houses in the city) and wades through the crowd toward whatever threat lies behind the door.

Caladin is obviously bothered by the interruptions and the obvious terror it is the source of."This is quite annoying. Clearly they have no respect for the arts!"

Caladin moves to the pathway and drawing his bow readies to shoot into the breach as the invaders enter."If someone could brighten things up that would be greatly appreciated. Oh yes and Serene can you please share some of your inspiration with me and this large fellow Ukou."

Hopefully we can end this without any needless deaths

Aznive looks around as the sound of the gongs falls off. There's definately something going on here. And it isn't just a rival noble sabotaging the performance. She nods at Phineas' observation. "Yep, I'm with you on that account."

The young woman tries to make her way across the room as best as she can, apologizing as she goes. "Excuse me, lady. Please let the good folks here pass. They're pathfinders, you know. I'm sure they'll be able to deal with whatever will happen, if you'll let them pass. Coming through, coming through... Calm down, no need to panic."

Aznive takes up a position on the far side of the door, taking cover behind one of the marble pillars. She reaches into her purse and takes out a slender gold-tipped rod. Striking it against the pillar, she bathes the back half of the theater in the bright light of a sunrod, blinking for a moment from the sudden glare. "Bright enough, Caladin?"

Double move. Retrieve a sunrod and light it. 30 feet of normal light around me, then 30 feet of dim light (assuming the ambient light was darkness, before).

The Pathfinders make their preparations as chaos sets in among the crowd. The Taldan patrons become successively more frightened and panicked with each crash of something bashing against the doors leading into the theater. Many have turned toward you, eagerly seeking out the light and stare wide-eyed at the doors as they begin to buckle inward, frozen in their steps. Others are rushing the stage, having seen the actors flee in that direction. A few brave souls try and calm their neighbors, while a minority that seem to have lost their wits streak for the other doors, desperate to find their way out of the place and trampling others who hesitate to move out of the way. Uoku's shout serves to settle a handful of people, but the group at large is too confused and panicked to even hear him.

Finally the door latch gives in under the assault and the doors burst inward, despite being designed to open from the other direction. Dead eyes stare blankly ahead from pallid faces as the enemy staggers into the grand theatre, dark blood still weeping from fresh wounds and staining their clothing. Their dress looks strangely familiar and it takes a moment before you realize these undead are wearing costumes much like those of the other actors in the opera.

As they crash through, Turan's extended reach due to his increased size affords him an opportunity to get a shot in and he does not waste it. With a great crunching of bones and a terrible wet squishing sound, he crushes one of the invaders where it stands, leaving only a ruined mess of meat and bone in it's place.

By the initiative, you technically have 3 rounds of prep. If I have you written as delaying in round 1, you may roll your readied attack or take another prep action and I will fill it in. Remember to take your round 2 action as well. Turan, you will have to drop your wands as they require a move action to draw and another to put them away, and you have no move actions left. You will have to draw your weapon on your move.
