Tresca nods at Odo and Maedhros. "It's a good thought! Do we need an authentic holy symbol though?" Tresca's knowledge in the realm of religious studies was sorely lacking, "That is to say, it it enough for us to simply carve a replica? Or are there rites and prayers necessary for a holy symbol to work properly?"

Tresca looks thoughtful for a moment before adding, "The abbey is supposed to be a holy site to worshipers of Aroden. So long as we think we can get in without one, I imagine we'd be able to find such a holy symbol inside somewhere, wouldn't we?"

"I don't think so. I've seen priests of the Dark Prince cast spells using a pentagram tattooed on their hands. Convenient -- can't be lost or stolen, leaves your hand free if needed, and shows the commitment you have to your faith."

Maedhros looks appraisingly at the halfling paladin. Sharper than I'd thought to give him credit for, the asmodean mage thinks.

Return to the prison, then?

A short walk later and you've returned to Swift Prison, standing at the feet of the Gilded Lady. The golden statue regards you with her uncaring gaze, her hand extended, demanding tribute.

Alrighty, now what?

"So, it's probably not the tune but the holy symbol for this statue, but it doesn't hurt to try both. How did that melody go again?" Tresca comments at the foot of the statue.

perform: music: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

Tresca whistles something that didn't even resemble Odo's melody, and instead just sounded tone-deaf. The alchemist noticed. "Err... perhaps I'll leave this and the holy symbols to you Odo?" she suggests sheepishly

"I can try the song again, but I suspect that a strong presentation of a holy symbol, as in the painting, will be more effective. As a paladin, my divine gifts are focused more through my weapons and strength of arms, but I shall give it a try."

Odo takes out a small, wooden carving of an angelic figure with a sun halo. He touches it to his lips, whispering "The Dawn brings new Light," and then brandishes it at the statue.

Odo cannot channel energy yet (that's a 4th level paladin power). He can lay on hands and smite, neither of which seem really focused on brandishing a holy symbol. But here's to seeing if it works.

If that does not work Ka tries it.

"Then I'll try it. Would you approach to receive the gifts of the divine energy, valuable companions? Of course, you are all fully healed and all, but channeling energy without anyone close is not the same thing... Seems like a waste."

Then he tries it, just like in the picture, lifting his holy symbol of Desna.

"Perhaps like most holy folks I have met in Taldor she is simply looking for a handout," Tanselle says, climbing up on the base of the statue.

Once close enough to the statue's outstretched hand, she places a gold piece in its palm.

And promptly falls to her death ...

Both Odo and Ka hold their holy symbols in the air before them, but nothing seems to be happening. Only when Ka channels energy next to the statue do you hear a familiar whirring and then *click*. A compartment in the state's foot opens and you find another odd parchment.

Tanselle is safe from death by failed climb check.

Tresca overlaps the two pieces of parchment and holds them up to the sunlight, trying to see if they make more sense out together. Aside from a pair of half-overlapped circles, and another circle bisected by the horizontal line, the result was nothing interesting to look at. "I think I'm more confused than when we had just the one..." the alchemist comments.

Tresca rolls the parchments up and passes them to the next person who wants them. "Garver suggested the Hall of Wonders and their engineering guild might help with deciphering these, correct?" she ponders, "I'd say our best options are either going there, or try smashing some colorful urns down at the abbey. My vote's for the Hall of Wonders. I don't think extracting a third parchment will be much use without some understanding."

"If the wise say it, I follow."

Garver leads the Pathfinders through the streets of Old Cassomir, his step hesitates as you come within view of an odd looking building with a more modern look than most of the surrounding architecture.
"Huh... They must be awfully busy today..." He scratches his head, seeming puzzled at the scene.

Smoke and steam pour through many openings of this misshapen building. Gears and gizmos can be heard clicking against one another in a rhythmic cadence. A loud "ka-chunk ka-chunk" sounds as several pistons churn up and down, powering some unknown machine. A cacophonous symphony of clinking, clanking metal plays on, punctuated by the occasional scream of an errant grinding of metal on metal. A huge, impressive sign, nearly the entire width of the building, declares it to be Cassomir's Hall of Wonders.

5) Ka Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
6) Maedhros Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Tanselle, Tresca, & Ka:

The high pitched screeching sounds much like the grinding of un-lubricated metal parts, but as you listen closer over the din of noise, you are certain that is the screaming of a person. Likely a female person, at that.

The building consists of two stories and as you approach from the south, you see only empty office-like rooms through the windows, the entrance to the northwest seems to be where the steam and smoke is the most concentrated and you can see only more cloudy mist through the windows there. Entering through a window requires a Str Check to open and a Climb Check to climb through. Map is updated, will add the interior when you breach the building.

Tresca nodded. "I hear it too." she announces, "I think the window would be faster, but that could be a tricky climb..."

Ditching her pack, the alchemist digs around inside it and grabs a coil of rope. Glancing up at the wall, she steels herself for a moment, takes a deep breath and attempts the climb.

climb check: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 2 = 12

If that's good enough to make the climb, Tresca's going to tie off the rope and toss it down to the rest of the party

Climb check is DC-10 to go through the window (they are first floor windows), so make that check if going through the window.
Once inside the Hall of Wonders, you can see the outlines of three great structures piercing a thick mist that chokes nearly the entire western half of the building.
A brass planetarium rotates in the northeastern corner. Next to the celestial model, a clockwork contraption ticks and tocks as it turns on its axis. Finally, a giant metal crab sits with its claws extended on a southwestern platform. A hatch at one end of the crab provides an entrance into a barrel-like chamber.

Grimaldus opens the window and climbs into the small office and cracks the door into the room beyond and sees a green-haired, female gnome bound on the floor in between two unsavory looking fellows. As he looks on, one of the half-orcs delivers a nasty kick to her midsection. "Answer the question or I'll give you another, Gnome!"

Updated the map to show interior.

Climb check with Rope: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20 Nervous about his climbing abilities, Maedhros makes it up the rope with surprising ease.

When they get into the room, Maedhros sees the fight happening, and summons a layer of grease to cover the floor where one of the toughs and the gnome are, figuring she's already down on the ground.

Grease, on the 10-ft square I drew on the map. DC17.

Grease:
A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

Not certain how crowded the area will be if everyone tries to climb through the same window, Odo moves down the building to the next window on the right and clambers up through that one. Plus, he figures, if he makes substantial noise, that may draw attention from his other comrades and divide the attention of anyone inside...

Since he does not seem to be in the line of fire for anyone, Odo would like to Take 10 on his climb. That nets him a check of 11.

It was starting to get crowded in the little room they entered through, but Tresca thought she could still make a shot. Loading her crossbow, she takes a small step to the side to line herself up with the door, and takes aim at the closest half orc.

We can assume Grim allowed time for others to climb in and prepare.
Grimaldus stumbles over the doorjamb, missing his swing at the unaware half-orc badly. His eyes travel upward to meet the shocked, outraged stare of a pale, dark haired young woman holding a heavy flail and wearing a chain shirt. She stands on a catwalk suspended above, looking on this little interview. You've not seen her before, but her fierce eyes and sculpted bone structure remind you strongly of the Ismacco woman you defeated on the deck of the Prancing Prince. In part 1, Ka and Maedhros will have no recognition.

Maedhros casts grease and as the oily substance manifests, the half-orc's feet slide out from underneath him and he goes down hard. The gnome aims a kick at him with her bound feet and finds she has new mobility as she slides through the grease in the opposite direction. A look of concentration comes over her face as she considers this new development.

With luck on his side, Grimaldus strikes a mighty blow resulting in a sucking chest wound, and the half-orc goes down heavily, bleeding out.

Though the distance presses her throwing ability to the limit, Tresca's vial flies true, striking the woman on the catwalk with an explosion of alchemical power. She cries out in pain and rage. The woman looks badly hurt, but she still stands. She clutches her beaded holy symbol and prepares to call upon Groetus to send out a wave of negative energy to harm her attackers.

Sorry, did not realize I could act in round 1 already.

Ka tries to put the woman on the ledge down with his crossbow!
Crossbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24! Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1 Why so serious?
Confirmation: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 Extra damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Ka brings the cleric down with a well placed crossbow shot while the half-orc carefully regains his feet and tries to step out of the slick area. But his feet betray him again and he slips down prone again.

Knowing the prone figure would be hard to hit, specially with so many allies in front of him, Ka touches Tanselle, granting her a bit of Luck. Then he moves to try to get a better view of the bandit.

"It would be best for you to just stay there..." Grim says to the remaining half-orc, standing over his fallen comrade with his greatsword held at the ready.
Readied power attack should the enemy attack us!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 3) + 9 = 16

Odo drops his scimitar at his feet and grabs the gnome by the arm. "I have you," he says as he drags her free of the grease and into the room before returning to his place blocking the doorway. "Are you badly hurt?"

I didn't realize I had a surprise action and a round to take all at once either. Sorry.

The Exchange

Female Half-Elf Gunslinger (pistolero) 1/Cleric 1 | HP 19/19 | AC: 17 /T: 14 /FF: 13 | F: +6 /R: +7/ W: +5 | CMB +1 | CMD +15 | Speed 40 (8) | Init. +6 | Perc. +11 | S.M. +6

Tanselle plunges a bullet and powder into her pistol and steps forward.

"Don't move!" she shouts, lining her sights on the prone half-orc. "Move one inch and I'll shoot."

Move: Load pistol.
Free: Take 5-foot step.
Standard: Ready attack on half-orc.

Tanselle will shoot at the half-orc if he tries to stand, draws a weapon, or takes any other threatening action.

Readied Attack Rolls:
Touch Attack 1: 1d20 + 100d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + (14, 7, 11, 4, 12, 11, 11, 19, 12, 2, 18, 8, 15, 1, 8, 19, 8, 2, 8, 7, 1, 17, 4, 10, 1, 1, 15, 4, 9, 6, 4, 6, 3, 18, 10, 10, 20, 5, 10, 18, 17, 18, 2, 3, 1, 7, 19, 11, 19, 16, 9, 3, 20, 5, 11, 19, 9, 2, 14, 4, 17, 1, 8, 5, 17, 8, 6, 13, 6, 8, 11, 12, 1, 18, 7, 17, 18, 12, 12, 5, 14, 11, 1, 18, 10, 1, 13, 19, 5, 6, 16, 4, 15, 17, 8, 18, 13, 17, 18, 9) + 5 = 1028
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Touch Attack 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Not sure what happened with that first roll - dice roller went cuckoo. Either way, Tanselle rolled a 15 for attack.

The half-orc struggles to his feet again, taking a terrible wound from Tanselle's pistol. He again fails to make progress off the grease, and slips down again. Angry over his hopeless situation, he desperately hurls his club at the gunslinger in spite.

Acrobatics: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Reflex: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Throw Club: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Tanselle takes 5 damage. Grim, was that a coup de grace? You'll need an acrobatics check if you're after the one still conscious.

The gnome winces at her bruises, but looks immensely relieved to be out of the line of fire. "I think I'll be ok now, but I'm sure they were meaning to kill me soon if you hadn't arrived. Thank you! My name is Queck. Who are you?"

Ka readies a bolt, but just aims at the man, not shooting. "He's unarmed. Are you ok Tanselle?"

Seeing as how the fight out in the main room appears to be virtually over, Odo fishes out his wand of wound curing then he picks up his scimitar. "My name is Odo. Let me get you out of those bonds and see to your injuries. What did they seem to want?" he asks as he hunkers down to cut Queck free.

Tresca swiftly loads a bolt into her crossbow and also levels it at the last remaining foe. "Surrender." she orders, "And start talking. What is it you wanted here?"

Move: load crossbow
I'd like to ready an action to shoot the last remaining opponent if he attempts to attack us.

No - didn't want to kill them - just readied if they came within range and attacked...Grim knows better than to step in a greased area!! =)

When the spell disappears, Grimaldus steps forward and points his 5' sword down at the half-orc's chest and says, "Better listen to the lady..."
