Wincing in pain, Jorag quickly regretted his bravado. "Leave it to the young ones Jorag, remember?" Trying to move into a safe location, he uttered a single, booming word, hands moving to cast a spell. "DOWN!!!"

Jorag casts Command, to make the Derro lie down on the ground. If the attacks of the others kills the female, he will step in that direction to avoid having to concentrate and cast on the male. If not, he will step behind the male Derro and cast the Command on the female. Will DC 14.

Seeing how powerfully the daylight spell lights up the room, Marco cautiously steps back out of the fray, assured that he can continue to defeat the derros' darkness from a safer distance.

Before moving, however, he swings the shining knife at the female derro, attempting to distract her if she tries to attack Jorag again.

Marco makes way for Frind and the rogue puts a blade between the female derro's ribs, but she still stands. Jorag steps into a flanking position with Svetlana and concentrates carefully on his spell as he booms out with a voice of Command. The female obeys and drops to the rough floor of the cavern.

Frindlikh tumbles agilly to flank the last derro and stabs ruthlessly with his blade. The derro still stands, but is clearly on his last legs. Li's arrows both fly off overhead, missing their target.

Svetlana is well past ready to be done with this business and slams home with her bardiche, catching the derro full in the chest and nearly splitting him in two, ending his life.

As you look around, you see that the prisoners have pushed back against the derro masters as your attack split their focus. Some lie dead of their wounds and others have fled back into the darkness, seeing the tide of the battle turned. The cavern is clear!

That is Combat Over!

Upon searching the dead, Li and Jorag discover two letters on the derro corpses. The first confirms that the Aspis Consortium agent Kafar funded the smugglers who in turn supplied the cult. The second letter details plans to penetrate other Cassomir buildings (such as the Admiralty Citadel and Harbor Watch) and perform additional mass abductions in the near future.

As for the derros’ prisoners, once freed the mite coup leader nods his thanks and signs a crude eagle symbol with his hands to the Pathfinders and then immediately motions for his fellow mites to follow him as he leads them away into the darkness, leaving peacefully.

The surviving Swift inmates and guards stand dazed in the grotto, too exhausted and shocked to do more than gaze fearfully at the waters that were meant to be their doom. The pool is filled with dozens of corpses of prisoners, guards, mites, and a variety of recently kidnapped Cassomir citizens.

You can still post any actions before leading the people out, just moving ahead with the wrap-up.

You lead your parade of survivors back through the labyrinth of caverns and sewer tunnels to the safety of The Swift. Once there, a member of the Cassomir constabulary rouses from his long wait and asks for your report. The authorities are all too ready to take your warnings seriously this time and runners are quickly dispatched to strengthen the defenses where the derro might strike next.

Before your business is concluded, the man asks, "We also suffered a theft during this ordeal... do you know anything about the loss of our chapel bell? This note was found nailed to the door of the Greedy Narses. Seems to be addressed to your Venture Captain."

Soooo, were we supposed to secure the bell and forgot?

With finally a moment to look around and catch his breath, Jorag quickly produced a pained expression at the sigh of the dead. "These people should be seen to." He moved to the edge of the waters and fished the nearest corpse out. "For now, let us gather them. I will perform the rites, and we can leave their recovery and interment to the authorities."

Back at the Swift, Jorag looked more than a little annoyed as he read the letter. "Scoundrels!" He grumbled, then sighed. "I suppose we should have done more than simply confirm it was here, and now it is lost, for gods only know what nefarious purposes."

At the debrief, Svetlana seems vaguely aloof and whilst her eyes appear distant it is clear she is likely reflecting within. ”That was depravity, sheer depravity, and such vile darkness needs to be rooted out and crushed. Those dirty things are only fit for destruction” she looks at her mailed glove once more, still not clean from the numerous times she smashed it into an under-dwellers face.

”I thought he would be different, and he left, just like the others. I shall follow his example, but not his footsteps – did his kind heart end in his disappearance, or was it just another abandonment? Did I not live up to his expectations?” Svetlana moves quietly to the exit, pausing a moment at the door in thought – she removes her sigil to the silver crusade, throws it gently on a table, and she departs.

***

Wandering through the dark and ominous halls, Svetlana looks out of place – the 'bright young thing' a little on edge and unsure of the surroundings, her demonic blood urging her to flee whilst her inner anger and unresolved rage issues push her feet onward, her mail echoing the clanking plate of the Hellknight by her side. He confirms with her that she really wants to go ahead with this, and that she knows what hardships and deprivations will be her certain destiny, she simply sneers defiantly and snatches the red and black tabard from his hands, and with a new found confidence she marches into the room with head held high. Zarta Dralneen smiles broadly like a cat with a new mouse, ”Hello, my pretty, we have such pleasures to show you”.

***
Through her gruelling stay at Citadel Enferac, she endures the extra hardships, stricter discipline imposed upon her, and the endless snide insults about her ancestry with a stoic determination – her only comfort being the quiet moments where she can be alone and stare at her Shining Wayfinder, so comforting to the touch. The Wayfinder only bears one mark not of its original manufacture and the small change is a detail she spends many hours noting – a miniature oil painting of a knight in shining armour, the name underneath as petite as the picture is small – ‘Oti’.

GM:
Svetlana tries to follow the good example she has been set, and sees that the only way to throw off the Evil living in the cities is though the establishment of order, but as always with such a troubled soul, she also sees salvation in her destruction – so she changes faction to Dark Archive (free ‘season 6’ change) – she is off to become a Hellknight, in a rage hate mockery of her broken heart. She’s buying the Hellknight Armiger boon on her next sheet :)

"We may have lost the bell, but we saved the criminals. I suppose we can take comfort in that whenever the bell turns up in some nefarious use, or any time one of these offenders is given a chance to hurt someone again. Yes, that was sarcasm."

And I am back!

In Absalom, the Venture-Captains claimed it would be a nice walk in the woods, a pleasant change of pace from the bustle of the city. Obviously they forgot about the brambles, boulders, and biting insects of the Verduran Forest, which have turned the jouney into an arduous three-day scramble of detours, torn clothes, and near falls. Fortunately, Venture-Captain Dennel Hamshanks made a firm impression before the expedition left Absalom.
_____________________________Flashback!____________________________________
The air grew still as Hamshanks rolled into a meeting room deep inside the Pathfinder Lodge in Absalom, his jowls flowing and his enormous axe clanking against his thigh. The man’s black eyes scanned the room. “You lot?” Hamshanks spat. “Well, maybe you’ll surprise me. Your boat leaves in an hour, so I’ll be brief. One of the Society’s contacts in Andoran sent us an interesting little nugget this morning. A druid named Hemzel swept into Augustana’s Civic Library last week, demanding his right of research. Our contact learned that Hemzel has acquired a lorestone from somewhere in the Verduran Forest. Heard of such a thing?” Hamshanks paused expectantly and spat again. “Of course not. Heard of druids, at least? And their crazy stone circles? Well thank Gorum for that. Lorestones are somehow connected to them — supposedly they can bestow you with all of the knowledge of the druids. We’d like to know how, so we want that stone and you’re going to get it for us."

“Unfortunately, the Society is not a friend to Hemzel. He’s the self-declared protector of the Verduran Forest inside Andoran’s borders and some of our more eager explorers have angered him and his little band of gnomes. He’s sworn a blood feud with the Pathfinders. Break out your skills of persuasion and get me that lorestone. Do whatever you need to — sweep the floors or plant some trees for the old man. Something nice — let him know we’re there to study and not to slash and burn.”
_________________________________End Flashback____________________________________
As the sun sets on the third day of travel in the Verduran Forest, the welcome sight of a puffing chimney — Hemzel’s home, according to the map—reveals itself atop a hill.

If you have any pertinent questions, you may ask them in flashback. This is an extended trek through the wilderness, so make sure you have necessities like food, water, whatever camping equipment your character would have, etc. I'll kick us forward in about 36 hours or so to allow time for gearing up.

Rhanloi, for one, enjoyed their days in the forest. Coming from a frozen land, he was enthralled by the vastness of the trees and plants, and the abundance of game along the way. And his elven heritage encouraged a balance with the land, whether ice or plant covered. He only hunted what they needed for food, never wasting any part of the animal nor allowing it to suffer at all. And, using a simple prestidigitation spell throughout the day, he was unaffected by the swarming insects that sometimes plagued others.

As they walked along, Rhanloi spoke with the others about their proposed approach to the potentially hostile druid. Perhaps his raven familiar could speak with the druid first. Maybe they could aid the druid in some way, or look for an opportunity to correct an imbalance to the natural order for him. But it was clear they were to try and undo the damage done by other, more aggressive, Pathfinders...

Failing that, help him out with a problem that needs taking care of. Show him we're willing to do what it takes to make amends."

Odo the Bold wrote:
"I do not think it would be carte blanche, Darren. It sounds like VC Hamshanks wants us to do whatever it takes to mollify Hemzel into letting us have access to the lorestone... even if we find it personally menial and embarrassing. Is that right, sir?" Odo seeks clarification.

"Quite right, Sir Odo. We could obtain the lorestone by force... but we have to consider the future implications of such an act. The Verduran Forest is vast, my friends, straddling the borders of three nations. And Hemzel is well regarded among his druidic kin. We want to restore a good, working relationship with the Wildwood druids, if at all possible."

"Hemzel has had past conflict with the Lumber Consortium, and based on his recent research, he wants to understand more about the lorestone as well. I'm hoping that our mutual interest in the artifact will indenture us with some good faith. Perhaps you can appeal to him as a fellow druid, Master Selter? As I said, he is friendly with the gnomes in the area and I don't expect he would bait us in for a trap as it might risk his woods, his home and his neighbors. Though the Wildwood druids watch over the forest, it nevertheless presents many dangers, including ettercaps, savage fey, dragons, and river pirates along both the Sellen and Verduran Fork. So keep your eyes peeled out there."

He turns and addresses the group one last time before turning to the door. "We received some letters for you all this morning... No doubt your faction leaders have heard of your destination and want to pile on some errand for you to accomplish along the way, but remember the mission comes first!" And with that, he lumbers on his way, leaving you to make your preparations and get on your way.

Smoke rises lazily from a chimney set atop a small, round wooden hut just over a steep hillside covered in thick vines and brambles as you hike up the path. “Too late, too late for Hemzel!” a high voice cackles from behind the hut. “Gire, finish them!”

Suddenly two stumps on either side of the path shatter in simultaneous explosions, scattering chunks of wood everywhere. Splinters and filthy hair rain down on you as a mass of squealing rats boil out of the ruined stump. They swarm together like a living carpet of greasy fur and snapping yellow teeth.

You hear the buzz of insectile wings and a tiny, feminine, quavering voice calls out. "Turn back if you value your lives! There is only blood and death before you... oh... so much blood!"

The brambles and vines around the hut are, for the most part, impassable. You can approach by the path which you are on and there are a few areas marked in orange that are only difficult terrain but they are not easy to see. Added key for reference. Darren is up! And Map is updated! Still need Jolly to check in with his pre-gen.

Selter remembers much about rodent swarms as well as swarms in general.

Darren's arrows strike the swarm, knocking many of the rats to the wayside by the impact, but still they surge forward, snapping their yellow teeth. Their scuttling feet all over him unsettles the ranger.

The feminine voice begins casting and the grass, weeds and brambles suddenly writhe with life trying to root you all in place.

Darren, you stepped into impassable terrain, so I had to move you back. Red swarms over you this round, but you get an AOO on them first. Provided you hit, the red swarm is likely dead and it will be the green that swarms you. Darren takes 4 damage and is nauseated. Creatures with the nauseated condition experience stomach distress. Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move actions per turn.

Ranloi, unfortunately you cannot see the caster yet. You guys might have missed the sense motive spoiler, so I rolled it for the group. ---------------------------------Round 2
Darren is Entangled, only one move action available due to nausea.

Hemzel built his home on a steep hill and surrounded it with a thick barricade of vines to guard against unwelcome intruders. Some squares are so dense as to be all but impassable, although they can be slashed open (Hardness 1, 15 hit points) or climbed (DC 10), and some are merely difficult terrain. (Those that are more orange in color) So yes, Selter and Sithiss can traverse these squares.
The whole of the green square is also difficult terrain due to the Entangle spell: This spell causes tall grass, weeds, and other plants to wrap around creatures in the area of effect or those that enter the area. Creatures that fail their save gain the entangled condition. Creatures that make their save can move as normal, but those that remain in the area must save again at the end of your turn. Creatures that move into the area must save immediately. Those that fail must end their movement and gain the entangled condition. Entangled creatures can attempt to break free as a move action, making a Strength or Escape Artist check. The DC for this check is equal to the DC of the spell. (DC 13, in this case) The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the effect lasts.

The feminine voice responds to Odo, "I am Gire! And I have to do what I am told... don't I? Oh! If you are peaceful, then don't fight! Yes, that's what should happen. You go home now and no else one will get hurt. Al-alright?"

Um... what? Was this posted to the wrong thread?

The disembodied voice begins to chant, but pauses when you begin to appeal to her. The entangling vines fall away as she says, "Oh! If you are friends of Hemzel, you're going to be very upset with us. I don't know what I should do... It seemed so simple when Cyflymder told us Hemzel was going to lead the humans to destroy the fey! So we pounced and surprised him. Cyflymder and his brutes tore the druid apart. His poor wolf friend too! So much blood! I thought we were just going to stop him from harming the fey. My friend is dead now and you people seem nice... Oh, I wish I had never listened to him! What will I do now?"

Out of combat, Gire is still invisible.
