Otiophon withdraws from the fray to give his comrades more of the action. Li kills two more rats with his deadly arrows. (And another rat down, another rat down... another rat bites the dust!)
The druid casts at the archer, hoping to spare his remaining rats. He causes a flash of bright light to appear before his face, dazzling his eyes.
Li is dazzled. The creature is unable to see well because of overstimulation of the eyes. A dazzled creature takes a –1 penalty on attack rolls and sight-based Perception checks.
The rats move in on Svetlana, Frind and Marco, chattering their teeth menacingly but only Frindlikh takes a wound.
Frindlikh takes 2 damage. Party up!

His vision now clearing, Li surveys the field again. Seeing Marco still struggle with the entangling vegetation, he fires on the rat snapping at the sage. The arrow pins the rat to the wall, leaving it thrashing in it's death throes as it perishes.
He turns his second shot to Frindlikh's foe, ending the battle as the rat screeches his last.
By the time last rat falls silent the constabulary has secured the southern end of the prison and and you see them rounding up men to the south. Nearby, a handful of ragged and injured cultists are in manacles and seated against the wall.
Combat Over! We'll proceed to the Keep next, so let me know if you had any other plans before heading down.
bluedove |
Two features dominate Swift Prison’s interior: the Greedy Narses and the prison’s main keep. The Greedy Narses is a large wooden building on the southern border of Swift Prison through which all prisoners or visitors must pass to reach the keep. The many cells lining this building’s southern facade serve as “beggar’s boxes” that provide a chance for the Swift’s unskilled residents to earn some coin. Other than the decorated front, and the gilded statue in the square, this building is quite plain.
The keep is three stories tall and once contained several holding cells, but as you pass through the entryway you see that the cell’s iron bars have all been removed somehow with reddish orange flakes and powder everywhere they should be. The keep’s ceilings are all 9 feet tall and the entire structure is littered with broken furniture and shattered storage containers. Having seen the place neat and orderly and bustling with activity, the sight of it all a sundered, chaotic mess and deathly silent is something of a shock.
B1: Indoor Market
Many market stalls lie shattered across the paved floor.
Wood splinters and papers litter the room.
B2: Mess Hall
This 30-foot-by-35-foot room houses the prison’s mess hall.
It contains several enormous wooden tables, stained by
years of use and abuse. The room smells musty and rotten.
B3: Kitchen
This large kitchen holds culinary equipment needed to serve
a large number of prisoners. Several dead prison cooks lie
here, their bodies slashed and stabbed repeatedly.
B4: Beggar’s Boxes
These twin corridors hold many small rooms that look
out through rusted bars out onto the small square in
front of the prison. At the base of each set of exterior bars,
a box with a slot for coins sits on the ground. There are 12
small rooms in total. Each wooden box has been smashed
to bits and most of the coins are gone.
B5: Swift Chapel
This 50-foot-by-35 foot room contains the recognizable
trappings of a chapel. An altar dedicated to Abadar rests
upon a raised section near the northern wall.
The chapel holds the supposed bell of obedience.
Map is updated, please make perception checks for each area you would like to investigate more closely.
*hint* Check your faction missions.
Marco Vail |
Marco takes a closer look at the cell doors. "What could have destroyed all of these iron bars so suddenly?"
Kn(arcana) or spellcraft (same mod): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Oh, yeah, Jorag: one was an air elemental, and the other was some shadow creature that wasn't susceptible to mundane weapons.
Frindlikh Ardig |
Frindlikh doesn't waste any time and heads straight to the chapel.
Perc: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Once he's in there, and the coast is reasonably clear, he sets up the musical box and rings the bell.

Marco wracks his brain for what manner of magic might have been employed to remove the bars, but can think of nothing. Wrong Knowledge skill, sorry!
This 50-foot-by-35 foot room contains the recognizable trappings of a chapel. An altar dedicated to Abadar rests upon a raised section near the northern wall. The chapel holds the bell of obedience and as you lay eyes on it, you suspect that the finely crafted bell is the genuine artifact.
Frindlikh notices an inscription on the chapel’s yoke located in the bell tower here that looks to be in Azlanti. He rings the bell and you all feel a calming sensation. It stills the chatter of your thoughts and you feel open and at ease.
Jorag |
Prior to bell ringing.
Entering the chapel, Jorag looked around with an appraising eye, none too impressed. "I never did understand this obsession with spending so much time on livery in a place of worship." He walked along the wall slowly, still looking around. "I mean its not like the gods have any need of it, shouldnt our prayers and worship be plenty? Back in the arenas, the dirt filled center served admirably as a place of worship." As he reached the alter, he shrugged. "Ofcourse, it makes sense for worshippers of Abadar, his portfolio being what it is. But I suppose thats why there are so many deities out there. We dont all think alike." He turned and smiled. "And though that leads to conflict, in the grand scheme of things, I think the world is better off for it. Would be terribly dull otherwise."
Kneeling down, he offered a short prayer to Abadar, paying homage to the chapels patron as was only proper.
'Hellion' Svetlana Irriseni |
"I like the arenas, I also reckon they are a good place of worship... the sand, the heat, the blood, the thrill. What could make you feel more alive and yet so close to death?"
Marco Vail |
Marco casts detect magic on the bell, and then examines it closely, making mental notes of its properties. He casts a spell from a scroll and then translates the writings for his fellow Agents: "'Through obedience, we find peace.'"

Marco confirms the bell is more than a mundane chapel bell, as it radiates with a strong aura of enchantment. Unfortunately he is unable to determine the exact nature of the enchantments, but he suspects it is likely some stronger variation of suggestion spell.
You complete your cataloging of the bell and move onward.
B6: Prison Yard
The prison yard ahead is littered with several dead bodies. Rusted, iron flakes dust the ground around a series of thick gates. Within the keep’s yard, four derro corpses surround an insectile quadruped. Countless barbed crossbow bolts penetrate the strange beast’s hide, and where its head should be, thick ichors moisten the ground around two separated feathered antennae. Dozens of mundane rats feed on the dead and scurry about the yard, they part like a living sea as you approach and flee for cover.
Known for their voracious appetites, it looks as if the Derro brought this 'pet' with them to devour the bars and barriers, but once the rust monster ran out of food, it hungrily turned on its derro handlers.

Svetlana confirms the derro and the strange creature are indeed dead. The dead derro wear simple leather armor and carry shortswords and their dreaded repeating crossbows and poisoned bolts, which seem to have proved key to bringing the monster down. Let me know if you are taking any looted equipment.
Satisfied there is nothing more to see here, Svetlana leads the group through the narrow passage ahead...
But as you approach the alcove, the ground rumbles and a massive figure bursts up from the ground before you. It seems created of the earth itself, vaguely humanoid in shape and featureless save for two glowing gemstone eyes. It rears up before you and slams down on Svetlana before she can react. Fortunately, the blow is badly placed and misses the warrior.
Jorag |
"Another challenger steps up to test our mettle. Upon whom shall Kurgess' favor shine?" Jorag shouted, moving a pointed finger around in an arch, with all the theatrics of a circus speaker. Coming to rest pointing at Svetlana, he smiled widely. "Ah, the Hellion herself, surely Kurgess has found his champion!?"
