Game Master Dennis Harry

In 1930-31, Miskatonic University funded an Antarctic Expedition which ventured forth into the icy wastes of the southern continent in search of new discoveries. Instead the intrepid adventurers found horror, tragedy, and a great and ancient secret.
Those secrets still lie under the ice of that mysterious continent waiting to be uncovered...

The soon to be Christopher St. Claire here. Any thoughts on how we're handling the education/age for this character yet, or will I simply choose appropriately?

I trust your choices in this.

Male Dwarf Korak

Alright then. I'll get him done up once my computer finishes it's defrag.

Shadow's Status

Great links Seamus and Thomas!

From them all characters can pick mundane gear and weapons. CoC does not have a very good equipment list that I can rip and place here in the thread so these will have to do.

I will start looking more in depth at the characters this week and next week Gameplay will begin.

Male Dwarf Korak

Anybody watch the Librarians? Yesterday's episode was kind of great for cthulu mythos fans, they end up at a university that is straight out said to be HPs inspiration for Miskatonic. It's wonderful.

Still working, and currently horrified that I IRL qualify as a dilettante.

Still going with the original concept I think some things don't quite fit the mold of eccentric rich guy I'm going for.

Antiquarian: Art, Bargain, History, Law, Library Use, Other Language, Spot Hidden, plus any one skill as a personal specialty.

I'm not sure exactly what spot hidden is supposed to do or if it's a catchall, like is it find clues? Decipher hidden meanings, find valuable things hidden among others, or all of the above? Art and Library use I don't see really going with the concept, Bargain would of course be a key skill of most rich people at the time, at least in my mind. History I'm unsure of. Law makes sense too, My only thoughts on other skills this character might have would be sword use as fencing was of course a favorite sport of the upper crust, or possibly guns to represent skeet shooting which I'm not sure of. Past that, I'm a little stumped. Thoughts?

Credit rating could be a good one since you are all about collecting things. And that can be expensive.
Conceal if you steal things
Fast talk could be very helpful. As would persuade.
Use library is also a good pick. Antique collectors have to do a lot of research to verify the item they are about to pay a small fortune for is what it should be. Plus the research into finding out about the item

For the just rich guy options tracking could be good if you are a hunter. Ride might be a thing, rich people love horses :) A sword is a classic though.

Did that help?

Work is keeping me busier than I would like to be.

Spot Hidden is your Perception check.

Will try to address the other questions by the weekend as well as review all characters. Wednesday or Thursday of next week I will have the thread up and running.

Halfling Sorcerer 1

Whoops didn't see this spring up ...

Oh well better late than never

Still not sure if I've created the character correctly, not made many before, if at all. Only played a few times, but really enjoyed it, so still a learner.

So that I have mentioned it on the 28th I doubt I will be able to post much of anything since.

Shadow's Status

No worries Celso, I have been too busy to review characters, work just keeps getting worse instead of better.

No worries Phoebe, I am a patient DM. :-)

Shadow's Status

Sorry for the delay folks, concerts and operas and kiddie movies oh my - have kept me quite busy these last few days.

Tomorrow night I have no baby and no wife at home and I plan on leaving work no later than 6. The rest of that night I will devote to answering questions from the Discussion and Recruitment Threads as well as examining PC submissions.

Wednesday night I will be home early for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I will start the first post of the Gameplay thread that night. Feel free to dot in the meantime.

Posting requirements. I really don't have any. As I usually cannot post every day I do not require Players to do so. Every second or third day should be sufficient. This is a MASSIVE campaign and will take a lot of time to get through. I have been waiting for a long time to run it and as my table top group might not be ready to do so for another decade (literally) I am very much interested in seeing it through to the end!

A little of my DMing history just to be familiar with me. I DM'ed Ravenloft and a bit of Dragonlance in High School for on again off again campaigns, mostly off due to other interests from both myself and the players during that time, the 2ed days. In college, six years down the drain, I ran a Vampire Campaign spanning snapshots of time from 1190 through 2000. In Law/Business school, and for several years thereafter, I ran a 3.5 D&D campaign in the Forgotten Realms taking the Players from level 1 through 37. Thereafter I ran the Age of Worms Campaign with a significant amount of add ons starting at level 1 and ending at level 25. Currently I run a table top Forgotten Realms game centering on Waterdeep. Here on the Boards my main game is a V20 Dark Ages game.

You will notice no mention of Cthulhu. I ran a few one shots but never a sustained campaign. I have been a player many times bu this is my first time really running the system in depth.

Don't seem to be able to dot the gameplay thread ... ??

Strange, maybe just a system glitch? Try again a bit later. Some of my PbP's seem to not allow me to post sometimes as well, when I come back later though things are generally ok.

Shadow's Status

Just realized I had Computer Skills as a Skill listed on the Recruitment thread. My mistake that is not a Skill that can be taken in this era of Cthulhu.

Shadow's Status

Alright 5 out of 7 are ready to go. I will post my initial in game post tonight and interviews for each character will begin on Wednesday.

Male "Human" Engineer

I'll swap the 50 points I put into Computer Use for Navigate, then, still seems fitting. I also added 10 years to the character age to keep the backstory the same, since you said it's starting in 1931-32

Sounds good, yes Navigate is a good choice. Sorry for the confusion there.

I will do the math and finish it by Wednesday. Inventory at work was brutal and they destroyed the sleep schedule, I am not bouncing back very quickly sad to say.

I can relate had a number of long hours back in October and it took a few weeks to get right again.

Are Psychology and Psychiatry basically the same thing in the game? They have different numbers to start. Or is Psychiatry the specialization in understanding the insane while Psychology is people as a whole?

Dark Archive

Male

I normally see Psychiatry more like 'I have medications/experiments to help solving your mental problem' and Psychology more like 'I will help you think about your problem, so YOU can solve it'.

A Psychiatric is actually a doctor. For the theme, I guess a psychiatric would be the ones responsible for those dreaded clinics where even the sane were imprisoned until actually insane. And a psychologist more like a councilor.

Shadow's Status

I would agree with you Longears except that Medical Dr./Pharmacy would fit the bill for the medications experiments from a game function.

The in game distinction between Psychology/Psychiatry is one can prescribe medication and an MD and one cannot.

Psychoanalysis is specializing in pathology whereas Psychology is in reading people, at least from a game mechanic standpoint Phoebe.

I am taking all three but trying to decide on the numbers I want.

Male Dwarf Korak

Do you know of a good editable character sheet? Or character outline designed for play by post. It helps me think.

Also, on google play, there is a complete stories of HP lovecraft app for free.

Male Dwarf Korak

NVM found one I can modify.

Good, I know that some of the Players here seemed to find very nice ones to link to.

The official start of the campaign will be tomorrow night after I put my daughter to bed. Looking forward to this one!

Male Dwarf Korak

is there a maximum level to a skill for starting characters or at least suggested level?

Shadow's Status
Korak The Boisterous wrote:

Not really, I would keep nothing above 80% for now though as that high a percentage in one skill chews into allocations to other skills.

So I have looked quiet a bit and cannot find it so I assume the salary to be around 3000 for a nurse or would it be less since just a nurse and a woman?

Yes that is about right.

Had actually thought of him as an orphan socialite. But I can work with parents and being adventurous

I will finish her after the turkey is eaten. Out of curiosity is anyone knowing each other? Or are we going for a bunch of strangers brought together?

Korak:
These could be adoptive or foster parents you may or may not like ;-) if it fits your idea of the character better.

I was considering that last night. I may suggest some connections today when I have a moment to post my thoughts on the matter.

The rough idea for her background is a nurse who married a cop. Husband died two years ago. She switched from a traditional nursing career to working in an insane asylum if anyone wants to tie themselves to her in some way I am cool with it.

Male Dwarf Korak

To be clear the list you sent me, are you suggesting those as the occupation skills you think are best suited to the character or other skills you think I should look into?

Shadow's Status
Korak The Boisterous wrote:

Other skills I think would make sense for the concept.

Male Dwarf Korak

Uhuh. Okay, Hadn't realized how many points I get so I'll stick with antiquarian, but, how does other language work? 1 point 1 language?

Character Tie Ins

The following characters may well know each other:

1. Seamus a NY cop may know Celso a NY "businessman".

2. Stanley who was in the Great War may know Father Fergus who was also in the Great War.

3. Thomas, an Occult writer with at least one Occult novel, may know Christopher, a pursuer of the Occult.

4. Phoebe a resident of Arkham may have met Stanley a former student at Miskatonic U located in Arkham.

Any of you can tie your stories to one anotehr if you like but these are the most obvious I can think of.

Yes. It can get expensive learning multiple other languages but as the character goes through each chapter he will have a chance to increase all of his skills. For a second language I would at least take Latin.
