Idril and Killia burn nearly a full five-feet more away as Sukune grapples Kalkamedes again while Baphos move to intercept him should he escape again.
Lukaas and Therin can declare what they're doing. If I don't hear from them by later tomorrow, I'll assume they are continuing with the actions they've started (Therin burning away bramble on this side and Lukaas moving to fire the opposite end).
GM Zoomba |
Lukaas finishes making his way to the other side of the thicket and hurls an alchemist fire at it. The outer brush catches on fire as some of it spreads a bit deeper into the brambles.
1d6 ⇒ 2x1.5
On the opposite end, Therin's torch burns away the remainder of another patch.
Kalkamedes give out a large snore as he tries to slug the man restraining him.
punch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 for damage: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Wow, sleeping Kalkamedes is rolling well :p
Another set of actions are up. 10 feet of thicket is gone with another fire starting on the other end. Idril seems to be slicing away at the next chunk. Kalkamedes is still grappled by Sukune, who is now sporting a shiner
Baphos I |
Looking to Kalkamedes and Sukune "Ouch!" At least I will motivate to Sukune. "Sukune, keep doing that good job." I would love to help in another way.
GM Zoomba |
Alch fire rnd 2: 1d6 ⇒ 1 x1.5
As Baphos braces to intercept any further escape attempts by your charge, Killia, Therin, and Idril come together to clear 1 more feet of bramble. Through the tangle you see the residual flame from Lukaas' alchemist's fire burn away some (though not as much as you had hoped) of the brush on the other side - you estimate you have cleared a path about half-way through the razor weeds so far.
Sukune and Lukaas can still take another action right now if they'd like. Sukune, do you want to attempt to pin Kalkamedes, maintain the grapple, or something else?
Baphos I |
Baphos is looking at Sukune and Kalkamedes to decide what to do whether Kalkamedes run free.
"Therin, how long do you think will take to clean the path?".
GM Zoomba |
Asuming Sukune will try to maintain pin Kalkamedes
maintain grapple: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
[ooc=While I forgot to add to that die roll, there's also the maintaining +5 bounus so...[/ooc]
Sukune manages to get Kalkamedes tightly cinched up as Lukaas and Therin burn away more bramble. The bound ex-paladin makes a half-hearted attempt to wriggle free,
Escape?: 1d20 + 6 - 5 ⇒ (14) + 6 - 5 = 15
But remains held by the larger fighter.
Meanwhile, between the rest of the groups' efforts, there seems to be only about 10 feet of bramble left to get through.
Barring some truly awful damage rolls I am perfectly willing to call this as you'll easily finish clearing a trail before Kalkmaedes will stumble into something sharp at this point. Thanks for staying with me through this part!: between the options and the weird quasi-round structure to this type of challenge this encounter can be a bit odd in PbP.

Some final chopping by Killia and burning by Lukaas and Therin finally finish clearing a path that, while not pretty, is wide enough for their sleeping ally to pass through safely.
Lukaas meets in the middle with the others, the voice from Therin's pack speaks again. "Not bad work then. Could be a bit neater around the edges. I suppose bushwhacking is becoming a dying art."
Killia |
Killia keeps his torch lit and wipes the perspiration off his brow with the back of his hand. Careful to keep the lit torch away from his powder or musket he passes by Lukaas and begins to scout the area just beyond the thorns.
"You should discover what that noise is Therin, I shall keep an eye out"
perception, not too far from the thorn patch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Baphos I |
"Therin, what is that voice coming from your backpack? What secret do you have?"
Then, looking around. "Is everyone in a good condition to keep going?" A kind smile draws in Baphos face.
GM Zoomba |
As Sukune continues to hold down Kalkamedes for the moment I believe..., Therin opens his pack. Beyond his regular equipment, the only other things inside are the curative potion and sword he brought from the Pathfinder's cabin. However, as the cleric throws back the flap a strong voice echoes out from the cracked sword. "Ah, always good to see the night sky. So, are you the latest team?"
Killia begins scouting out beyond the razor bramble patch. He does not notice any immediate dangers, and the area is calm except for the occasional bird and a few crackles from dying embers behind him.
Therin Baldaros |
Umm...yes we are..I guess. Sorry we were a bit preoccupied with Kalkamedes to let you out earlier. I am Therin...and you are? No one mentioned you had a name...
Therin looks completely perplexed at the talking sword.
GM Zoomba |
"Gamin, good sir" the blade seems to respond. "And if that was what was distracting you than pay it no heed! My poor friend has been killing himself for far too long already. I'm already a broken relic: he at least might be saved still intact!"
Baphos I |
Baphos walks next to Sukune while he frees Kalkamedes. "That was a hit. Are you OK, big fellow? Let me know if you need my help."
The conversation between Therin and Gamin catches Baphos attention, but he is afraid to come close. He has heard stories about talking swords and stuff, but to see it by his own eyes let him perplex and scared.
GM Zoomba |
Don’t worry about it Sukune. We all have those weeks :p
”BIND HIM TO A BACK?” Gamin yells out as he overhears Lukaas. His voice gets softer but no less incredulous as it continues. ”That man there may have his faults but he’s a better soul than most and has been through far enough already. Besides,” he mutters, still in a slightly bitter tone. ”I certainly don’t know how to find the way back to wherever he’s doing his cursed march towards. Do you?”
Therin Baldaros |
We aren't binding him....we just have a rope tied to him, which is anchored by our strong colleague here. We let out a length or rope so he can go where he needs to but we are within reach should something happen...
Therin tried to convince the sword of their intentions....a thought that struck him as odd....
We should let him get going....we lost enough time with those bushes...
Baphos I |
"Yes, Killia. I used Sukune's wand, I think he hasn't gotten wounds since then. However, let me see how he is."
perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
GM Zoomba |
"Ah. Yes. I suppose that is...prudent." Gamin says. A counterweight system could be of use in case Kalkamedes mistakenly walks into another pit again. As the sword continues, the sleeping Kalkamedes wanders past then as he and a trailing Sukune exit the bramble patch. A glimpse at the leg seems to confirm the previous healing has shored it up.
Very well then. Let us sally forth!
Idril Bladesong |
Idril's quirks a brow as the phantom voice is finally uncovered. He listens patiently as he speaks to his fellow agents. When he has a moment, Idril steps near Therin and speaks to the blade.
"A sentient blade...I have researched such things. Tell me, Gamin was it, how did you come to be in the service of our friend Kalkamedes? Did he confide any secrets to you? Please know we are here to help and any knowledge could be of use."
Idril sits back and awaits the blade's response.
Sukune |
"I would not wish to have him completely tied to me, just in case there is a problem. That said, if we need my weapon at some point, we should probably have someone ready to take the rope...just in case, you know?"
Then he realizes what was just talking and he shakes his head. "Have to make a point to report on that...interesting to be sure..."
GM Zoomba |
Kalkamedes finishes making his way through the briar patch as Idril comes back to report. The sleeping Pathfinder replies to the elf’s scouting report with a loud snore and continues on his way northward. As the rest of the party continues to follow him and scurry back ahead I am assuming in the same positions as before?, Gamin continues.
”Kalkamedes found me many years ago. The two of us were…of a similar sort. He is truly the best of my wielders: a good man struggling against his shortcomings instead of giving in to them. “ the sword replies to Idril. His words are slower and more precise than before, as if he would rather say nothing more on the matter.
Gamin’s tinny voice takes on a stern tone. ”As for secrets, I would no more betray his than he would mine or yours. But I know nothing of his new condition. Of that you have my word. The day before the night walks began was just like it had been for weeks. Him and I were simply exploring and mapping the Fenwalls. We travelled near a boar pack, but unless hogs have suddenly learned to curse their betters I cannot see that being important. Still, keep me close: I would gladly help as best I can!”
The night march continues, with the moon rising higher in the sky. After another hour, Kalkamedes abruptly turns to the west. Idril has to scurry back once he notices the change in direction, while the rest of you adjust to the sleepwalker’s sudden course correction. Just as you reorient yourself to this new trail, the altered path leads into marshier terrain than the packed earth of the journey’s first leg. Water begins to seep up to the top of your boots and a wide pool of rainwater comes up before you. Kalkamedes’ stride is slightly slowed as his legs push through the water but he continues forward, his snoring shattering the night’s silence. As he moves the water begins to come up further to his knees.
Idril Bladesong |
Idril looks down to the intelligent blade and takes in its words. He opens his mouth to inquire further when Kalkamedes turns abruptly. Indril reacts and falls back into a protective position. Seeing the approaching water hazard, he moves to the front of Kalkamedes and begins to prod the depths of the water with his blade. He calls back to Sukune "Be ready to hold him back, I will signal if the water's depth become treacherous."
Killia |
Already being ahead of Kalkemedes, Killia rolls his eyes as the water begins to rise and raises his gun to his shoulder to avoid the powder being spoilt. He keeps to the opposite flank of Therin and keeps his eyes out, moving cautiously to check for any potential hazards.
"Just great, what next!"
Lukaas Penn |
Do any of you know how to swim? Or to build quickly something that would help our sleepwalker not to drown? I can maybe buy us some time...
Lukaas gets his luth out and starts playing a soft, heart wrenching ballad
Use Fascinate on Kalkamedes, DC 15 Will save. If he fails, he sits and listen until I stop playing. Having Lingering Performance, he will sits 2 more rounds after I stop playing

GM Zoomba |
Idril and Therin hurry forward as Kalkamedes wades further into the marsh. With every few steps Idril needs to submerge more and more of his arm before his sword hits bottom, while Therin ends up to his waist in the stagnant water trying to keep ahead of the group’s charge as his backpack bobs atop the surface of the water. "Hmm, this certainly wasn't as dark and deep the last time I was taken here" Gamin says.
Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
While Sukune checks his grip of Kalkamedes’ rope, the snoring Pathfinder seems unnaturally soothed by Lukaas’s music. The water rises to his chest level as he halts his movement and sits down, his shirt puffing up oddly by the motion.
Baphos I |
"This could be a problem. Probably, we could cut logs that float and use them to cross this. It seems like Kalkamedes wants to cross it. We can let him move again when we get to the other shore." Baphos looks around to find logs.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
Killia |
Killia halts as he feels the water get deeper and deeper and slowly wade back through the marsh to keep his gun from being ruined.
"Hmm it is much deeper ahead, let us look for a raft for us, good idea Baphos"

or i could roll terribly ><
GM Zoomba |
Baphos looks around and manages to yank free a couple of partially submerged logs sticking out from the marshy floor or the pool. As he moves around with the sticks, Gamin calls out to him. ”What are you doing there fellow? Are those for a raft? Marvellous! You’d need a rope or a vine of course, but if you get those bring me over. I’m not without a trick or two myself!”
Assuming you have some rope or other similar material, creating a raft would be a Craft (wood related skill), Survival, or straight-up Intelligence check
GM Zoomba |
As Killia starts to lash together a makeshift raft on which to load Kalkamedes, Therin lumbers over to help. While pointing out joints and trying to tie knots he feel a strange feeling guiding his movements...but even that isn't enough to stop him from getting horribly tangled in the rope's end.
Therin as a cleric would be quite familiar with this sensation: Gamin cast guidance on him.
Luckily, the gunslinger's survival skills are quite up to the task by himself. Using his rope and Baphos' logs he puts together a floating platform that looks quite sturdy.
Kalkamedes, meanwhile, is still sitting and swaying slightly to the music, his eyes still closed.
It would be one more round if Lukaas wants to keep his performance. Depending on how you want to load Kalkamedes on the raft itself, you should be good with just the lingering rounds.
