Zendikar: Before the Swarm (Inactive)

Game Master inxpitter

Battle Map

"Heard the news 'ave ya? Them monsters is back, and they've been tearing the land up everywhere. Human, Kor, Goblin, Merfolk, Vampire, Elves, no ones safe."

The recruiter slaps you on the back.

"But I guess that's why you're here, in'it? To sign up. To make a difference. To teach them otherworldly beings that we won't lie down without a fight!"

--------------------------------------------------------------
So if you've heard the news, Wizards of the Coast has released a companion guide for playing D&D 5th edition in the Plane of Zendikar.

Link here Zendikar Planeshift

And as I love both these games, I had an itch to start a game up.

The premise is that you are a denizen of Zendikar who has signed up with the Allies to form an expeditionary group. Together, you will accomplish missions to hopefully free your world from the Eldrazi menace.

=========================
Things you should know
=========================
-I plan to make this a 5 person party. No more, no less.
-Each character will represent one color of mana.
-If you can make a convincing enough backstory, you can change the normal colors of your race. (white vampire, black merfolk, etc)
-Posting expectations is at least once per day to keep the game moving (and preferred once per weekend if possible)
-I'm not a MTG encyclopedia so there will be much non-canon in this game.
-Non-magic players feel free to apply. Its a fun game world to enjoy, not much prior knowledge is needed that a few text blocks won't fix.
-You are allowed to post a maximum of TWO character ideas, a primary and secondary. This is so you can have multiple shots of getting the colors you want most, and doesn't drown me in submissions.

========================
Character Guidelines
========================
-20 point buy
-All characters will have an Ideal, Bond and Flaw as per normal D&D 5e character generation. The lists in the PHB are guides, you may invent your own.
-Max hit points first level
-No defined alignment

============================================
Answers to Questions you probably will ask
============================================
-I believe a character is defined by its actions, as such I dislike using alignment. Rather, your actions will dictate how others perceive you and how certain spells react to you as well.
-If you would your character represent more than one color, be patient. One for now, and if you'd like to add another there will be an opportunity.
-If you want to be a planeswalker, let's just say there may be a chance for a *spark* to ignite.
-Being a certain color does not limit abilities of spellcasting in anyway. If anything, we can flavor spells such as a wizard merfolk shooting scalding water instead of flames for burning hands.

Please ask questions if you need more clarification, but hope to see your submissions soon.

Dot.

Only 20 point buy? That's going to be hard. 7 points harder.

Primary is Red Goblin Rogue, Secondary White Kor Ranger. I'll get crunch tomorrow.

Liberty's Edge

Hello! I'll be making up a black vampire and a red human, I'm considering my crunch right now... question, would you consider allowing variant humans? Also... are we allowed to use feats and multiclassing? They are optional. What level are we starting at?

Dotting.. two ideas:

Vampire Blue Monk
Human Red Wizard

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Likewise want to check about the PB. The PHB standard is 27 pts, as each score starts at 8.

Do you want to keep it to PHB+Zendikar, or are Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide archetypes available? How about Unearthed Arcana?

So I haven't had a chance to delve greatly into 5e much. But are newbies to 5e welcome to dot? If so I'd be interested in doing a White mana Kor Monk (primary), or Green mana human Warlock(secondary). I've been incredibly interested in getting into 5e, but time has really been the defining factor. Playing in the MtG-verse has really taken my interest though.

Vitrius is not the typical Vampire. Though he is aware of his condition and the responsibility it brings, he is also a logical man at heart and sees his need as a necessary thing for survival. Being brought up as a noble scion did not work well for him and he instead chose to become a Lorekeeper for one of the Great Houses. In order to keep his thirst from overwhelming him, Vitrius has embraced his training as a Lorekeeper, learning how to preserve and protect all knowledge, whether good, evil or indifferent. He spent many an hour poring over old tomes and scriptures and became increasingly interested in Vampire history. Somewhere along the lines he discovered a vile truth about his race's origins. Determined to know more, Vitrius left the library in search of more truth.

Chander was born the second son of a noble house and destined to be the ruler of said house if his brother should perish. His brother did perish, but Chander did not inherit the house or its fine things. Instead he inherited the title of outlaw and troublemaker as he was the one that started the fire that burned down the house with his brother in it. This fact has kept Chander away from home for a very long time, especially since his love of fire has yet to wane and as his magic studies continue, the worse it gets. While he puts on an air of noble indifference, Chander genuinely wants to make amends for what happened, but he doesn't know how.

It targeted him and the dragon, spinning them through time and space to another edge of the world. There, they saw a most frightening sight: and Eldrazi.
Kick always says he is braver than a dragon, because he didn’t run like the dragon did then. Other say thats a pile of Grotag poop, because he was on the dragon at the time it was running, so he technically did run. Kick disagrees with them, saying he would have stayed to watch the Eldrazi.
The dragon, being just as dumb as Kick, didn’t actually notice the goblin until he jumped off of its back, accidentally landing on a Kor who was swinging by on his ropes. Jeque had a disturbingly normal childhood for a Kor. He was born in a mountaintop village, and left at 17 to become a mountain guide. When he returned home 2 years later, he found the village burned to the ground by dragons. He was distraught, and went a little crazy. He started looking to kill dragons.
He was walking through mountain passes, when a goblin fell on him, nearly blubbering in its fear. He looked up, and saw a dragon directly above him. After telling the goblin to run for its life, he climbed up after the dragon, attempting to kill it.
As he cut at it, he realized that he had no chance. He was doomed.
So, knowing this, he jumped. Off the dragons back, and plummeted 100 feet strait down. Through some miracle, he survived with only a broken leg. He lived by himself in the mountain for several years, meditating on his life.
Now, he has finished meditating. He wants to kill dragons.

There's a specific reason for this that should be very fun in game.

Multi-classing and feats are allowed as offered in the Planyer's Handbook. We will be starting at level 1.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

I was thinking Mastermind (SCAG) rogue for the bonus action Help, as that seemed in flavor with allies. Maybe for a secondary submission.

My primary is Kala En, Merfolk Druid
"Doubt the waves and doubt the sky, but never doubt that I'll change the world."

Spoiler:
Kala En is used to derision from other merrow. Always at the bottom of her class ranking, she missed her chance to work with the legendary Kiora. Even her famous older cousin Jori En would not take her on expeditions to the deep. But above Tazeem's sea, the wind whispers to her that she is destined for great things.
Upon reaching adulthood, she swam off from the tutors that would not take her, and ended up in Murasa's Sunder Bay. She saved a drowning Tajuru elf, and was warmly accepted into their community, hosted by one of their sages, she was taught (and had an intuitive grasp of) nature magic.
Now after a year, she has decided to strike out once again to chase her destiny, and join an expedition.

Color: Green
Background: Folk Hero
Ideals: Nothing and no one can steer me from my higher calling.
Bonds: Every living thing has something to teach, I must learn from others.
Flaws: I'm ashamed of my ignorance: I'd rather lie than admit I don't know something.

Kala En tries to befriend everyone she meets, which is often hampered by her free-flowing prevarications. She lies more out of habit than cruelty however, as she believes that all truths were once lies. She'll never spread dangerous misinformation (ex. eldrazi are warded off by saffron. Think Deacon from Fallout 4).

Also, found another primer for Zendikar here for newcomers to the setting.

Liberty's Edge

Ok, sounds good for me, as long as I know you are taking into account the mechanical effects of a lower point buy, I'll trust you've adjusted for it. As for SCAG stuff... a question about the bladesinger, the archetype exists in this gray area where they say its made "for" elves and half-elves but can be used by anyone (a very annoying bit of passing the buck to the DM I find 5e does a lot) so would you restricted Bladesinger to elves/half-elves or open it up to the other races as well?

Here is my primary submission,

Milinor, The Ula Creed Merfolk Wizard:

STR 8
DEX 10
CON 12
INT 17
Wis 10
CHA 12

HP 7

1: Chromatic Orb, Expeditious Retreat, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Shield, Witch Bolt

Background: Sage (Specialty: Wizard's apprentice)
Personality: I am used to helping out those that are not as smart as I am.

Ideal: Knowledge - The path to power and self-enlightenment is through knowledge.

Bond: I have an ancient tome that holds terrible secrets that I must protect at all costs.

Flaw: I can't keep most secrets to save my life, or someone elses'

Equipment: Dagger, Component Pouch, Scholar's Pack, Spellbook, Bottle of Black Ink, Quill, Common Clothes, Small Knife, Belt Pouch, Rod

Alabaster mask and book from my former master with an encrypted letter that contains instructions on what to do with it.

Backstory: Milinor was selected from an orphanage at such a young age he doesn't even remember the place, due to his intelligence and early natural talent for magic. He studied for years with his master, an aging Kor enchanter named Belthin, learning first the basics of magic, then quickly moving on to more powerful castings. Milinor and his master parted amiably, when Milinor found a town that he decided to live in. He took some work as a mage/sage for hire, and life was fine for the first few years until he received a bloodstained package written in his master's scrawl. The letter inside made no sense, and neither did the mask that appeared to be made of a single piece of alabaster that was so highly polished that it could be used as a mirror.

The book, on the other hand, that was another matter entirely. The first time he had tried to read it, he became physically ill. It was clear the that tome was nothing but evil. From what little of the letter that he was able to decipher, the book was called the tome of shattered souls, and that it should not be given to anyone other than those listed in the letter, but he could not understand the language of the letter, much less it's code. Taking leave of his comfortable life, Milinor set out to unravel this mystery, taking care not to mention the existence of the book to anyone.

My secondary submission,

Phaerlin Amoxin, The Vampire Warlock:

STR 8
DEX 12
CON 12
INT 12
Wis 10
CHA 16

HP 9
AC 12
Prof +2
Init +1

Saves: STR= -1; DEX= +1; CON= +1; INT= +1; WIS= +2; CHA= +5

Dagger +3; 1d4+1 damage
Longsword -1; 1d8-1 damage

Skills: Arcana +3, History +3, Intimidation +5, Persuasion +5

Class Features: Otherworldy Patron - Great Old One;

Spells: (Spell slots: 1)
0: Eldritch Blast, Prestidigitation
1: Arms of Hadar, Hex

Background: Noble
Personality: Despite my birth, I do not place myself above other folk.

Ideal: Respect - Respect is due to me because of my position but all people regardless of station deserve to be treated with dignity.

Bond: The common folk must see me as a hero of the people.

Flaw: By my words and deeds I often bring shame to my family.

Equipment: Longsword with family crest, Signet Ring, A Set of Fine Clothes, Scroll of Pedigree, Purse with 10 gp, 4 Athemes (Daggers), A Component Pouch, Dungeoneer's Pack, Leather Armor, A Shard of Obsidian that always feels warm to the touch

Backstory: Phaerlin, the only son of one of the minor noble houses of Guul Draz, is something of an enigma amongst the nobility (and a sense of shame amongst his family): he aspires to be a paladin. He holds himself to the highest standards of honor and chivalry, protecting both cattle and servants alike. Unbeknownst to everyone, in order to accomplish his goals, he made a pact with an angel name Kassian who provides him with power in exchange for protecting the people of his land. His master has recently instructed him that there is great evil moving throughout the world, and that he should take up the mantle of the questing knight in order to battle it. Convincing his family to let him leave was not that hard: sending him away meant that he would not be around to be an embarrassment to the family. So, gathering up his belongings, he set off into a harsh world.

And since I'm bored, here are completed submissions by color so far:

Black: Phaerlin Amoxin (Secondary), Vampire Warlock (me)

Blue: Milinor, Merfolk Wizard(Primary) (me) | Vitrius Girsen, Vampire Monk (Primary) (Shadow Bloodmoon)

Green: Kala En, Merfolk Druid (Primary) (Petty Alchemy)

White: Jeque Kilinn, Kor Ranger (Secondary) (Belac93)

Sorry to hear that. I pickup up the posting rate from other games I'm in which usually keeps the game moving a steady rate. Realistically though, I know there'll be days where players can't post, and I'm not gonna kick someone for missing the occasional day.

In that case I will try to submit something tonight. I was thinking a Kor Cleric.

So if Storyteller gets his (presumably) white cleric posted, I shift to black, and shadow goes with his primary, we will have all of the colors covered.

I'm definitely interested in the idea, and since it was mentioned, a White Vampire sounds fun.

Not a lot of interest in Green, eh?

I have a vacation coming up for about a week next month, so I could step down (I know getting the show running smoothly at the start is important to PbP, and at best I could try posting from my phone without access to books).

The other question of course, when's the planned end of recruitment/start date?

I will have my submission up tomorrow been a super busy week.

I'm planning to close recruitment on May 13, which is a Friday (ooh, spooky). Hope to start shortly after that.

If necessary, I had a Green idea too, especially since the Red is so popular..

That's perfectly fine, its a fun new world that you don't need a depth of knowledge to enjoy.

Kor Cleric Background:
Tes grew up with her people in a traditional role. Scaling the cliffs of Zendikar as her ancestors before her had for generations. Unlike many of her people though she absorbed all of the old takes like sponges, even sought out the legends of other people when she could.

One day her peaceful existence was shattered by the appearance of aggressive creatures. At first their presence was a nuisance, numerous but weak they were easily culled. Little did the elders know that these "spawn" were but the first wave of terrible creatures that would plague and driver her people to the edges of despair.

The tribe fought fiercely, in the process Tel's own beliefs in a higher power opened her to powers that dovetailed nicely with her ow beliefs of the purity and healing of white mana. A gift of the Gods the people spoke of her new abilities, her ability to draw mana to heal the wounded and bolster the courage of the Kor warriors spread to other nearby tribes.

One day the attacks dropped off, it was as if some outside force had defeated or at least distracted these "Eldrazi" from finishing the destruction of her people. Tel plans to use this time to learn more of the ways of the these creatures so they can be defeated once and for all.
