I'm so excited to play, I don't know if I'll volunteer at all. Thinking about doing a single slot on Sunday morning, but we'll see how it goes.
I too am up for slots 3, 4 and 6... in addition to: 2 (or 8), 5, 7, 9 and 10. 1 is out because I won't arrive until later. I guess that's everything except slot 1 and any the other repeated game.
The main caveat here is if you don't mind playing with my friend (and he may also be running a pregen). Otherwise, I may just make 3 & 6.
Looking forward to it!

Yeah, but those sourcebooks have loads of other cool stuff in them. ;-)
I dropped $5 on the bundle that included the Adventurer's Armory in Hero Lab and $7 for a physical copy ($12 total) because, despite most of it being in Ultimate Equipment, I really wanted vermin repellent. I really f•cking hate swarms.
TheBobJones |
Just make sure you have physical copies., since there was a ruling a few weeks ago that requires it. People forced Mike into a ruling... And he made one.
Like I open my laptop and show them the sourcebook with my digital signature?
PCGen doesn't have anything thing from Advanced Class Guide yet - slayer, skald, warpriest, i.e. all the cool new things.
Silbeg |
For source material, you are 100% correct, Damien.
The issue is that you are required to have physical (print) copies of your ITS, chronicles, and character sheet.
That being said, I personally don't care, as long as I can see a character sheet if I need it. The reason given by Mike was that he didn't want to expose his GMs to the risk of dropping someone's $500 iPad.
Damien Wilmann |
Character sheet, too? FFS.
I've got ITS and Chronicles all nicely filed and physical anyway (and they need to be to allow boon annotations, adding more purchases to the ITS, etc).... but my character sheet? Damn.
I don't mind printing a character sheet for a GM to look over, and for most occasions it won't matter at all. But since my only live PFS experience is going to be at Cons... leveling up part-way through the convention using pen and paper when I've got a much better way available is just a pain in the butt. I agree with Michael Brock's reasoning, as well as those who argue against it. It's just not happy times for me is all.
I guess I can hand-level-up as well, but urgh.
FYI, the post for Pen and Paper character sheets is here.
Silbeg |
yeah...
As people have warned before, don't pressure the campaign management into a decision when a decision isn't needed.
They will ALWAYS err on the side of the GM.
What I would do, Damien (and have done) is to pre-level your characters. Make your purchases as a "Best Guess", or add them in later, if needed.
Damien Wilmann |
Hey all, after being convinced by Jack to GM at all, I will be GMing a single slot for GenCon! I'll be running 7-02 (tier 3-7) the 8am Saturday morning slot (AKA, "the hangover slot").
Really looking forward to it, actually. Should be a blast! Jack's already going to try to play the game, hope the rest of you Saturday Gen-Coners can nurse your hurting heads over to my table, too!
Great idea from Jack on the pre-leveling! Will do.

Excellent! Schedule made, flights booked. Now, just have to plan how to get the Maple Bacon Bourbon to Indy. :D
And maybe a 1/6 barrel of Surly Furious.
We're gonna be arriving (Me, Jon Dehning[VC], and Ray Albrecht) at about 11:30 Indy time, on Wednesday. We'll be flying out at 4PM Monday.
That'll give us time to get checked in... wander to a grocery store to pick up supplies, and then get to Sagamore and get our packets.

Hey all. So the Scions of the Sky Key Pt II is due for release today (actually it was yesterday, but was delayed, it seems). This means I can probably read it over the weekend, and be ready to roll straight from the current game into this one. There will definitely be a gap between Pt II and Pt III, though... so...
What would you like to do about it?
My current plan is to run with the Alts for a little while. We'll play First Steps (parts 1-3) then the Wounded Wisp (which actually runs better if you play before the Confirmation, even though it was released after - weird).
At that point, we can move the Drongos to be under Jack's control. I'm happy to take a break from the Slayers to play the Slave Master's Mirror if Jack is... otherwise, we could try to play that one after Scions Pt III. I don't think (from memory) that Jyri wants to play more than 2 games with us (fair enough, too!) so I guess those are our options. Slave Master's Mirror is 3-7, so it could wait a while before we'll be too high for it... but I wouldn't mind getting it out of the way while we've got a gap.
Also, we need a bit of clarification around a particular word that is being bandied about:
Lockwood
läkwo͝od
verb
1. request to have your token moved by another player in a roleplaying game because you are otherwise unable to do so yourself.
Can you please Lockwood my token for me?
I Lockwooded your character for you.
noun
1. the act of Lockwooding something.
No problems, Chris, I know you're on your phone a lot, happy to give you a Lockwood.
Silbeg |
The plan sounds fine. I think it'd be better to have the Drongos play Slave Master's Mirror (which, BTW, is quite a bit better at 6-7, at least more challenging, but whatever), since they played Slave Ships.
Damien could run the Thornkeep group through a scenario (you'll all be at level 4, so any 1-5 or 3-7 would do). I'll bring in a character for that, depending where mine are (Trask has only one more xp since Crypt of the Everflame, but I could still play him. Might also be able to get a game in on him before that. Whatever). 6-15 The Overflow Archives comes out today as well, and is also a 1-5.
Another idea would be season 5 stuff. I have not yet played Merchant's Wake (wow... I think that's the only season 5 I haven't played or run. I haven't played Port Godless or Where Mammoths Dare Not Tread, but I have run them both). Or even earlier stuff... where there is a lot that we've not played.
After Slave Master's Mirror and whichever scenario we choose, I am thinking we could do Bonekeep 1 (before it gets taken away as a four-star exclusive), and Damien takes back the Drongos. Or, the Drongos could go through Bonekeep, leaving other stuff for the Slayers, in which case Damien runs a different scenario.
GM Damo |
I'd prefer to keep running the Drongos (where possible) or the Alts (if not the drongos). I'll leave the Slayer running to you. We can always pause one group of the other, since we'll have 3 in the rotation. I kinda like that I'm part of a regular team as a player (Arturo with the Slayers) even if I did run the first one.
Whenever you need to take over the Drongos (because you've run it, or because it's set in the Land of the Linnorm Kings and I have to play it with Lort) then I'll just run the Alts and we can pause the Slayers for a bit. That way, also, we won't have any issues with scenarios / modules running at different speeds.
We will eventually run out of scenarios to run with either group from season 6 / 7... and when that happens, we can head back to older seasons for some fun. We'll also eventually top out at level 12!
Anyway, how's that work for you, Jack? You'll be the only GM for the Slayers, stopping them and taking over the Drongos when the need arises, while I run the Drongos for the most part, taking up with the Alts when the Drongos become yours.
As for Bonekeep, definitely want to do that with the Slayers. Looking forward to it!
Silbeg |
That works fine.
We'll do BK1 at some time after The Forgotten Laboratory. We'll have to have a predefined definition of what maps 1 day into ? minutes. Just to keep it honest.
Whichever group hits 12 first will get the opportunity to play Eyes of the Ten (with me GMing).
The second will get the chance to play Wardens of the Reborn Forge, with the Seeker arc (if we want to). Chances are, I'll have played this by the time we get to it. However, I might be willing to replay it.

Hahahahahah, I was laughing pretty hard about this at work, especially the extension term, Lockwooded. Also, you giving me a Lockwood, that just sounds awkward.
Actually our meaning much, much better than the urban dictionary definition of Lockwood... I'm sure you can guess what it is, because it's exactly what it sounds like :)

Either definition works for this.
Erm... just to clarify "either definition": Urban Dictionary #3 or my definition (above). Urban Dictionary definitions #1-2 would not have helped my experimentations at college.
Not that there's anything wrong with that....
...it's just that college was supposed to be about moving on from high school.

Hey guys. Would you mind checking out this Pathfinder Primer that I created for a group at work that I am going to be teaching Pathfinder (as a team building exercise, of course!)? Any comments would be useful. Note, some of the content was stolen from the PRD.
Thanks!
Damien Wilmann |
I've always found learning Pathfinder (and most RPGs) to be a circular experience. You have to learn about attack and damage, skills and saves right there when you learn about ability scores... but you can't put the combat section (or skill section) first. Best way to learn is to leap in and play ASAP.
That in mind, this is an awesome guide. If ever I need to teach someone Pathfinder, I will be taking it from you. ;-)
Some comments:
- It may be clearer to newbies if you mention first up that ability scores are actually numbers, and what a typical range is (ie. 7-18 before racial mods)... and that 10 is "average".
- I wouldn't worry about the "primary casting score" bit - it may just add confusion, and you'll be there to make sure the sorcerer (for example) doesn't take a 7 in the all-time-favorite dump stat.
- Wizards are more "versatile". This is as it is usually written, and is a pet peeve of mine. Sorcerers possess more versatility during the course of any given day, since they can choose to use the same spell again and again, or to cast something else, and they have more casts per day. What wizards have is more choice at the beginning of the day. I would consider revising (if you share my opinion) "They are more versatile than a sorcerer..." to "They have more spells to choose from than a sorcerer..." since that is more accurate and works just fine with "... but must choose which spells to memorize each day" (though adding "of those" before "spells" works even better still, in my opinion). Wow. So many words for basically nothing. Sorry!
- I'd put in a quick combat overview by way of example. Just a sample combat like from the start of the Core Rules (or maybe just that verbatim). Just to show how the rolls are made and what to expect when the inevitable happens. You may be intending to do a total hand-hold on that, though, so cool.
I've usually found a good way is to go through the character creation as a group activity (unless you have no experienced players there, in which case pregens). In that case, your doc would work as a superb reference / cheat sheet. Again, you may be intending to do this anyway.
Also, can you steal from the PRD? It's OGL!
Papasteve08 |
From my experience trying to teach newbies pathfinder (or D&D, or gaming in general) things like ability scores and really any crunch fall completely on deaf ears.
An analogy would be like trying to tell you about the details of how waves, tide, and currents affect you before I tell you what Surfing is... (not that I surf... I just wish I did...)
Now I'm not sure if this document was meant to be in addition to other things, so take what I just said with a heaping of salt :)
Other than that, I think it reads pretty well. For a newbie, seeing the classes first, and deciding what they kind of character they want to play might be more helpful in prepping them to understand things like ability scores, skills, feats, etc.
Silbeg |
@Karma For the most part, they at least know what RPGs are... but most have not ever played.
@Papasteve understood, and I've been wondering, too. I'll be getting some feedback from the folks that are reading it as a resource... and see if it actually helps them.
There is probably more that I'll be adding, but this was supposed to be a good start.

... erm, that doesn't happen, does it? I thought it ignored your own posts. Unless it got mangled in the data stream (or some such Sci Fi-ness).
Poker tonight, light posting... unless I bust out!
Just have a few drinks, mechanically it gives you a +2 circumstance bonus on your bluff skill.

Yes, Chris is right, in fact, I think we have covered this general theme already in "you know you pbp to much when..."

Hey Jack, I was running over the [url=https://pathfindersocietyonline.com/category/event/pbp-game-day/]PbP Gameday 3 FAQ[/ooc] (just roaming, trying to find out how often they run) and "Bonekeep" caught my eye.
Can I run Bonekeep?
Not at this time. Due to it’s special nature, Campaign Leadership has not approved it for PbP Online Play.
Looks like we're not technically allowed to run it on PbP. Not sure if you know more than I do... or if we have special ways around this (ie. no official official ruling). We could always play it late, late on Thursday or Friday night at GenCon. ;-)
By the way, since I couldn't find the answer I was looking for, does anyone know when the next GameDay will be?
Damien Wilmann |
I should further mention, by the way, that I'd be perfectly happy to play a non-sanctioned Bonekeep! Maybe take the time required to fully clear it out (or perish in the attempt)! I've always been really curious about that dungeon.
After all, we'll be playing non-sanctioned First Steps Parts 2 & 3. Why not add some more non-sanctioned non-PFS fun to the mix?
I'd still want to use the Thornkeep characters... just as a bit of a "what if...?" thing (I'm digging thinking about this kind of thing and definitely want to run a what if for Scions Part 2).
Damien Wilmann |
Sweet! If you're happy, I'm happy.
Not sure how realistic this is, but for time-frame on Bonekeep, I'd go for a certain number of posts rather than days (for our sanity rather than anything else... if you say days, then I'll probably get divorced I'll be playing PbP so much).
Our games tend to go for 200-300 posts, which I'd put at the < 4 hour mark. I'd say the 5 hour mark would be around 350-400 posts. How does that sound? Good idea?
Silbeg |
Sounds like an interesting idea... I'll figure something fair out.
perhaps something like 10 mins/day (so 30 days), or 15 posts per 10 minutes?
We'll see. I think you are right... there needs to be both, though. If we have a day of 100 posts, that would be WAY more than 10 mins.
Or, we try and carve out a time to do it via Roll20, google hangout, hipchat, or something.
Damien Wilmann |
Hipchat? From the folk who brought you the exceptionally convoluted Jira? Wow. First I've ever heard anyone actually suggest using it. WebEx, yes. Hipchat? No. Kudos for not mentioning S**e though. I only open that one when chatting to the grandparents.
Pretty sure Chris B and Jyri are out for gaming video chat... but happy for them to make an exception (hint, hint!).
Otherwise, PbP it is! Let's see how much of that superdungeon we can clear through. ;-)
