Zeb's Crypt of the Everflame PbP

Game Master ZebulonXenos

1 to 50 of 104 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

This is a game I decided to run as 'PbP practice' after reading and participating in this thread. The short form is that it's a Level 1 adventure, core + APG (no playtests, no other material whether it's Paizo or 3rd Party). I'm shooting for 5 or 6 players. While the title says it's a one-off, if everything goes hunky dory it is part of a three-adventure series and I might continue on past the end of the module.

So, full disclosure. This is not my first time GMing (PbP or otherwise), but it is my first time GMing for 'strangers', as it were. I fully intend to do my best to run a fun, quick (relatively), and complete game. In the event something does go wrong, I intend to observe the common courtesy of letting ya'll know instead of just winging out without warning.

Now, the long form!

About 200 years ago, an adventurer by the name of Ekat Kassen decided to settle down. Having adventured all around Nirmathas, he tamed an area of the Fangwood on the banks of the Tourondel river and founded a small town there. After ten years of prosperity, the town came under attack by Asar Vergas, an old adventuring companion of Kassen's, who felt that the man had slighted him during their last adventure together.

After two months of raids, the townsfolk discovered the enemy force was using an ancient crypt as its base of operations. Kassen himself set out at the head of a posse, defeating Vergas and his men in a bloody battle. He himself was mortally wounded, and entombed in the ancient crypt. An eternal flame was placed over his resting place, which has become an important part of the town's history.

The town, named after Kassen himself, sends a small group of townsfolk on a yearly autumn pilgrimage to light a lantern from the flame and bring it back to town, where it burns all winter as a symbol of the town's resilience. Usually, this is done by the mayor and a small group of dignitaries, but every few years - like this one - a group of young townsfolk are chosen for the task, a special coming of age ceremony meant to mirror Kassen's triumph.

-

The town of Kassen is a hamlet, with a population of 750. While the predominant character type should be adventurous younglings, an older mentor or bodyguard character is certainly possible as well. All of the characters should have some reason for currently living in Kassen regardless. The module also includes a mentor for each of the original 11 base classes; those who wish to tie their characters more strongly to the town by selecting a class mentor (or an associate) should state their preferred class and ask me, and I'll provide a brief description of the mentor.

The game rules are as follows:
- 1st level, 5-6 players
- Core and APG only. Please do NOT request other materials.
- I will allow traits, using the standard rules.
- 20 point buy, average starting gold
- Application deadline is midnight Central Standard Time (GMT-6) Friday, February 7th
- My preferred posting rate is 1/day, excluding weekends (though I have plenty of free time so I'll likely respond whenever necessary). Remember, keeping your fellow players informed of any potential delays in your posting rate is common courtesy.

My metrics for selection will be biased towards well-written characters tied to the town. Feel free to have a back-and-forth with me; anything that shows you'll maintain interest as a player is a plus. As little as one solid paragraph is enough for background. If you wish to go longer, the sky is the limit (so long as it's well written!), but keep in mind this is a one off.

That said, since this is a module and I'm trying to keep things as simple for me as possible, I will have to bow somewhat to having a 'balanced party'. While offering to play the cleric won't necessarily get you a spot, if a 'role' is oversaturated you should consider altering your concept.

I'll throw my hat in the ring. Definitely a halfling, an ex slave sorcerer or summoner, that has settled down in Kassen under the protective wing of (whoever the mentor or sorcerer is should work equally well in both cases).
STR 10(12-2) DEX 15(13+2) CON 13 INT 14 WIS 13 CHA 16(14+2)
Traits: Focused Mind, Reactionary

Having been raised a slave, his owner let him go free after his powers manifested themselves in the middle of a particularly brutal beating, almost killing his master in the process. After that he wandered around deep inside a mental shell, distrusting almost everyone, and constantly moving as his power always caused problems. One day he stumbled upon Kessan, where (mentor) ran into him, and took him under his protection. (mentor) has since been helping Praliz control his power and learn how to trust people for the first time in his life.

Description: Particularly small, even for a halfling, Pralix has many scars all over his body from his days as a slave, including one on the side of his face that is from the fateful beating that refuses to really heal. As a result, Pralix usually wears cloths and headgear that cover most of his body and head. Despite these physical scars, he has a presence about him that is impossible to ignore.

Information on the mentor would help determine sorcerer or summoner, and if sorcerer, what bloodline, as well more specific background.

Oracle could also possibly work if the cleric (or even paladin) mentor fits the overall background better.

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring for this as well. Disclaimer: I have previously played in a Crypt of the Everflame PbP, but it ended shortly after entering the crypt. If I could, I'd like to recycle my previous character -

Drosk Ironhame, dwarf priest of Torag:
CLANG! CLANG! rang the forge hammer against the glowing red metal. CLANG! CLANG! as the young dwarf hammered the heated steel into the desired form. HISSSSSS! of the steam as he carefully lowered the still warm dagger into the quenching bucket.

Drosk raised the tongs out of the bucket and admiringly appraised his handiwork. He had been working at the forge for hours, carefully crafting the dagger that he would offer up onto the altar of Torag, the god of artifice. Finally, the steel blade was finished and, once cooled, could be fitted into the gilded hilt that he had fashioned earlier.

CLOMP! CLOMP! sounded the heavy boots as Drosk's uncle Braggar approached the forge. Braggar was the finest smith in Kassen, and had taught Drosk all that he knew about metalworking. Braggar was also a perfectionist, and Drosk knew that his uncle would find some fault with his handiwork. Without a word, he offered the blade to his uncle for inspection.

"Hmmph," the elder dwarf grunted critically as he eyed the dagger, slowly turning the tongs this way and that as he held the blade up to the light and then pulled it close to his face for a closer look. "Good and straight, but there are some slight imperfections here, here, and here," he said, pointing to two spots along the blade's length and one spot near the tang. "As it is, it will make a fine show blade, but with time it will break if it is used for much real work." Braggar handed the blade back to Drosk as he added, "You do good work, nephew, but you still have room for improvement. You need to spend more time at the forge..."

"I KNOW, uncle," Drosk interrupted. "'If I want my craft to live up to the Ironhame name.'" Drosk finished his uncle's statement for him. "You know I want to be as good a weaponsmith as you someday, but I also have duties to the church. You know how much it means to me to follow in Father's footsteps and become a priest of Torag."

"I know, Drosk," Braggar sighed, not wanting to start up the old argument. He loved his nephew as if he were his own son, and while having a priest of Torag in the family was an honor, Braggar would have done anything to have kept Drosk from following in Thangar's footsteps. Drosk's father had been an adventurer, and had been killed battling fire giants shortly after his son had been born. Drosk had never known his father, but had heard all of the stories of his father's many heroic deeds. It had always been Braggar's greatest fear that someday the young dwarf would take up his father's mantle.

"It is a good blade," Braggar said as Drosk placed the dagger on the cooling rack, "and will make a fine offering to Torag. Now, don't you have some duties to attend to at the temple with the High Priest?"

"Yes, you're right, uncle," Drosk said, putting away his tools and cleaning the area around his forge. "There is much to do at the temple. I hope we have time to finish before the festival starts!" As the young dwarf finished, he grabbed his cloak and donned the brightly colored hat that his aunt had knitted for him. "Tell Aunt Beryl not to keep supper for me. I'll plan to eat at the temple with Father Prasst!" he added as he hurried out the door into the brisk autumn afternoon.

"I'll tell her," Brask replied to the door as he sat wearily on a nearby bench. He was beginning to regret suggesting Drosk to Mayor Uptal as a candidate for the pilgrimage to the Crypt of the Everflame this year.

Thanks for your consideration. Best Regards!

@sunshadow: I like the slave/runaway angle. I'm including the mentor information for each of the three you requested here in spoilers. Anybody considering one of these classes is free to check; I'm just using spoilers for space considerations.

Sorcerer Mentor:
Moltus Vargidan is a rich and eccentric sorcerer, father to nearly a dozen bastard children (each demonstrating some degree of his magic). He lives with two lifelong servants and his children, and is often found doddering about the manor mumbling to himself.

Children from the household are largely self-taught, as the old man shares few of his secrets. Many of them believe the patriarch is losing his grip on reality as well.

This runs slightly contrariwise to your background, but I think it could be molded into something neat. Perhaps he 'adopts' you (nothing like an even dozen!), and most of the mentorship/opening up is actually from one of the adopted siblings. If you'd like to run with that, it sounds good to me.

Paladin Mentor:
Sir Drammot is a scout in service to the nation of Lastwall. He's stationed in Kassen because it is close to Belkzen, and he reports to his superiors about any orc activity in the area. The people of Lastwall respect him, though they wish he would leave them to their own devices and treat him as the foreigner he is.

As a mentor, he is wise and capable but fairly harsh. All of his lessons are related to zealous service of Lastwall, and his pupils are taught that this is a great honor.

Cleric Mentor:
Father Prasst is a cleric of Erastil, but his temple is open to all friendly faiths. Father Prasst himself does not offer services to these other deities, the temple does have shrines to other gods.

Father Prasst is young man, aged only 24. He is also a kind and understanding man, though he is very serious about defense and security of the community. Due to his youth, most do not put much faith in his council except on spiritual matters. He was trained as a soldier in Tamran, though he remains mum on why he quit and became a priest.

@Max: I'm liking your character. As for having already played, and I almost put this in the opening blurb, I don't have a problem with that. So long as you can manage to keep yourself in-character, there's no problem, and since it ended so early, most of the module is still new to you.

Shadow Lodge

I am interesting in being a witch.

No idea of a character yet. I shall see as to the work up of those currently in a 'holding pattern' from other failed games. Though Crystal D'ark is looking like a good and fun contender, as Xane is a tad too over the top for what you're asking, but she's still legal by your rules. =)

Pralix, halfling summoner

Having been raised a slave, Pralix's owner let him go free after his powers manifested themselves in the middle of a particularly brutal beating, almost killing his master in the process. After that he wandered around deep inside a mental shell, distrusting almost everyone, and constantly moving as his power always caused problems. One day he stumbled upon Kessan, where he saw a crazy old man talking to himself; following the old man home out of curiosity, he was startled was on the man's children outside the gate, causing his eidolon to come out. Pralix prepared to run, as the usual reaction to the wingless wyvern like creature was one of terror and/or attack. He was startled when the reaction was that the both of them were being invited in, so the inhabitants could learn more about this new kind of sorcerous magic. Since that day, he has lived under that roof, slowly learning to appreciate and control this strange creature that he is able to call forth with the help of his adopted siblings and the occasional bit of inspiration from the demented old man. He is also learning how to get along in general society for the first time ever.

His eidolon is a serpentine base with the limbs(legs) and mount evolutions that right now looks very much like a wingless wyvern, but says that it is actually the spirit of a an ancient dragon that was bound to Pralix's soul at birth. Instead of a rune on Pralix's forehead, the scar on the left side of his face glows with a magical aura.

STR 8(10-2) DEX 15(13+2) CON 13 INT 14 WIS 12 CHA 17(15+2)

Traits:
Focused Mind: Due to a tortured childhood, Pralix has developed an extraordinary ability to focus; +2 to concentration checks
Reactionary: Having always been the runt, and never being able to effectively fight back, Pralix has learned that going before anyone else is usually a good idea for him; +2 to initiative

Feat: Taunt

After much consideration, I have decided on the character that I wish to apply with.

Whimsical Bolkin the Pragmatic Scrapper (Fighter):
Background:
Bolkin Reid, known as Whimsical Bolkin by the people close to him, has always been fairly troublesome growing up in Kessan. His namesake disposition prevented him from sitting still for very long, and he'd often be found around town causing mischief on a regular basis. Lacking finesse, he always preferred more physical activities such as roughhousing with the other children as well as the village animals, although he wasn't above the occasional carousing once he got older. It didn't take long for his physical prowess and desire for adventure to lead him down the path of the Fighter. Much to the chagrin of his superiors, however, harsh training regiments did little to dampen his wild spirit. Indeed, many a complaint came from his training buddies about his tendency toward dirty tricks over honorable combat, and he was quick to get into fights even outside of practice. The resulting punishments only served to make him even tougher, and to this day he fancies himself a competent fighter. He looks forward to the rapidly-approaching day when he will finally be able to experience the thrill of adventure firsthand.

Appearance:
Bolkin has never concerned himself with looking neat, as is made evident the moment one lays eyes on him. His disheveled black hair obscures much of his wild brown eyes in the front front and is tied into a loose ponytail that reaches his waistline in the back. The stubble that he seems to wear permanently on his face contributes to some vague sort of rugged appeal, but he'd obviously look out of place in a more formal environment. At 5'7", Bolkin isn't the textbook hulking fighter, but his athletic physique still gives off the impression of someone most would think twice before messing with. Several scars, mostly around his arms and back, pay tribute to his rough training and rougher punishments.

I'll do stats later, but to give an idea, Bolkin is a Human Fighter who focuses on combat maneuvers over straight beatings, although being a Fighter, there may also be a few of those as well.

Best of luck with this adventure.

Here is Crystal for your perusal again. =)

Working up a halfling cavalier as we speak. Quick overview: Order of the Cockatrice. Despises the undead and is loyal to Pharasma. Came to Kassan to investigate the Crypt as it might be a place to gain some bragging points. He started out as a squire to a paladin, but quickly found such orders out of line with the halfling way of making the most of any opportunity. Most Order of the Cockatrice members to tend to selfish and self-absorbed, but this character just sees life as something you take advantage of or it takes advantage of you. He is more like Custer in "Night at the Museum 2." Will have a full write up in the next day or so. Do you have any preferences that I should work around in regards to this character which you have not already stated above? I know this a mount heavy character, but I think the cavalier is a roleplayers warrior and like them a great deal.

Plus, it seems everywhere is large enough for a 6'3" barbarian to swing a zweihander these days so a 2'10" person on a rottweiler is not gonna be having trouble fighting mounted with scaled weapons almost anywhere, lol.

The halfling cavalier would be no worse than my halfling summoner with his medium eidolon.

Grand Lodge

I'll submit Telperion, elven rogue later tonight. And I'd like to have information on a mentor in Kassen, please. My character will be a scholar with broad knowledge skills. His "thievery" skills are mainly driven by a compulsive curiosity, especially of history. "If it's locked up, it must be very interesting...and I'm really doing this for the greater good, so...". Without greed, without guile, he doesn't steal...he peeks.

I submit for your consideration Filios Philandril, Rogue Scout. Filios has honed his skills as a scout in the forrests of Nirmanthas with the legendary rangaers of the area. He is large for an elf and has a strong slant towards melee based combat with his two-weapon fighting proficiency. His is driven by greed, lust lust and luck per his following of Calistria. Please see the profile attached. It can be tweeked accordingly.

Here is Malcom Cavendish, Paladin of Iomedae and Warrior of the Holy Light. Please see profile for background. I can adjust the stats if you choose to include the build. This PC waqs created with a 4d6 roll, not a 20 point buy.

I'll throw my hat in the ring with a Halfling Rogue Scout.

I need to adjust everything to match what you are requiring. I'll repost when that is done. But I wanted to give you a chance to read my character.

Karen 'Raven' Vargidan, sorceress (no specialty decided yet - does Moltus have one, or can I pick any, and claim it came from her sorcerous mother's side?)

Karen insists that people call her 'Raven'. She claims that her power comes from witchcraft, and she has been caught dancing naked in the woods to attest to it, but everyone in town knows it's really from her sorcerous father, just like the rest of her siblings.

As one of the youngest, Raven is known as a troublemaker, often getting into fights with her nearest sibling, brother Merritt. Their last battle was epic, and if Raven hadn't broken his arm, Merritt would probably be stuck doing "this stupid Everflame ceremony thing" with her.

I would like to present Annwyllia , a young ranger
She was in a crypt adventure which ended at the entrance to the crypt.

Here was her original submission :
Anwyllia is a red headed girl , 16 years old , rather on the small (but wiry) side . When Merrilee , her mother died when she was but 8 , her father Kenalt took her along his hunting trips rather than letting her alone. As Kenalt is something of a work fiend , this mean Anwyllia was only in town about once a week thereafter and so had little time to socialize with the people of her age in town.
As a result , when she came into town , she tended to stay in the fringe of any group listening to the conversations going on .

Possible connections : she is an only child but could easily be the cousin of someone in the group

Grukk Tornlock, a Half-orc Bard and Savage Skald, coming from a mixed blood barbarian tribe torn apart by rivals. Grukk was a war chanter for the clan leading the warriors and supporting them with mysterious magicks within his loud commanding barks. He and his surviving clan had since disbanded when their numbers started dwindling so much that it could be counted with one's fingers. Since then, Grukk had traveled and integrated himself with the town of Kassan, working telling war stories to bar patrons by the fire light for coin enough to survive. Stories of his band though have gotten around and obtained for him a potential recommendation for the Crypt of the Everflame travel.

Grukk is a strong man with a strong character to match. Tall with a light gray skin tone, he has actually well kept long black hair and a pearly fanged smile.

Okay, I have updated to match your requirements.

The only thing I haven't done is complete my gear purchases.

I do have a question.
In my background I am trying to do something to get noticed by the mayor or city council so that I might be chosen to be a part of the group that goes after the EverFlame. Can you help find something for this character to do so that he may be chosen?

Malcolm, stats matching 20 point buy for further consideration.

Telperion updated in my profile! Thanks for your consideration.

Grukk is updated in profile, Weapons and armor are written assuming that I have at least 49 gp starting out.

I need to withdraw Filios from consideration due to his selection in another PbP. Thanks

Here is Pravlox, the halfling summoner; I had to change the name as the orignal one as already taken for a profile. I don't have the eidolon's full stats, or any gear bought, but otherwise the profile should be done.

Shadow Lodge

For a witch who would be a good mentor.

I would say either the druid or the wizard mentor, just as a guess.

I have a gnome cavalier, the likes of which has barely been seen on the surface of Golarion in many a long year. Indeed, he is more wonderful than this screen can hold, so I must stand upon his most audacious statting.

Yeah, he's a peacock, but he's a fun peacock. Thanks!

Haha, wow, I hadn't expected the thread to balloon this much overnight.

I'm gonna give in and post all of the mentors here for ease of reference.

edit: To open up / clarify here, if people want to pick a mentor who doesn't match their class for roleplaying reasons (such as our rogue-who's-not-a-kleptomaniac up there), I'm fine with that.

Barbarian Mentor:
Braggar Ironhame runs one of only two blacksmith shops in town. Though his competitor outpaces his production, the dwarf's goods are of higher quality.

He is surly as a mentor and occasionally prone to great fits of anger, which often lead to repairs to his shop. Despite this he is a great teacher of craft and artifice, and also teaches others how to control their anger and release it when the time is right.

Bard Mentor:
Jocyn Elmiran is the only real entertainer in town. The half-elf had a run in with orcs near the Belkzen border 4 years ago, crippling his leg, which lead to him settling down in Kassen. He has a room in the Seven Silvers tavern, where he performs with a variety of instruments and styles every night.

His students enjoy his loose style and rather carefree nature. However, when drunk (which is often), he often rambles and lets loose hints of a terror in his past he never speaks of otherwise.

Druid Mentor:
Olmira Treesong is an eccentric druid, who wears only clothing made of natural materials (like bark, leaves, and grass). She is also always accompanied by a small retinue of woodland creatures, even on the streets of Kassen. She constantly talks to herself and them, carrying on full conversations despite the fact that no one answers her.

She's trained a number of druids over the years, often sending them on esoteric missions such as listening to the wind for a week, sowing seeds throughout town, or mimicking local animals.

Fighter Mentor:
Gregor Wisslo is the town's guard captain. He is an old, staunch man who believes in schedules and discipline over ingenuity and spontaneity.

As an aged fighter, he is a more than qualified teacher, though his lessons are rigid and his discipline harsh. His trainees are quite skilled, though many detest the old man and call him names behind his back (the most recent popular one being 'Captain Is-Slow').

Monk Mentor:
Ilimara Oniri is a Qadiran recluse, who has lived at the edge of town for almost 8 years now. She claims to be searching for the peace in her heart.

She has taken on a number of acolytes over the years, but all of have left in search of an easier path. Those that have learned from her know there is a darkness hiding within her, and only those strong of will can bear to be around it.

Ranger Mentor:
Nirmathas is known for its brave rangers, men and women who have spent years carving the nation out of the wilderness and protecting its people from threats domestic and foreign. Arnama Lastrid is one such woman. She is quiet, tough, and fiercely protects the country she has come to love. Orphaned in a war with Molthune, she learned everything she knows from her adopted parents.

When she came of age, she returned to Kassen, her hometown, and lives there to this day. Though she is not the best teacher, impatient and with little discipline, she excels at teaching by example, taking her students on far-ranging patrol and hunts.

Rogue Mentor:
Jimes Iggins is a waiter at the Seven Silvers tavern. He's also a well-known petty thief, known as 'Short Change' due to his propensity to do just that. Though he's genuinely helpful and likeable, he can't help but wind up with a few loose possessions from customers.

Most townsfolk put up with him; after all, they know where their possessions went if they want them. Iggins is happy to share a host of tips and tricks with any who will listen, believing a little bit of petty theft is all in good fun.

Wizard Mentor:
Holgast lives in a slightly leaning tower just outside of town. Though he is immensely knowledgeable, he is quite old and forgetful which causes the townfolk to leave him to his own devices most of the time. He spends most days puttering about his tower, smoking his pipe, reading books, and taking naps. Once a week he heads in to town to purchase supplies with a seemingly endless supply of golden coins, which he cryptically says came from an immense horde some years ago.

As a teacher, he is very frustrating, his ways old fashioned and erratic. His students are also required to perform menial chores for the privilege while he naps. Most students learned the most by peeking into his spellbooks while he was napping.

Now you know how I've felt the last couple days; I had to turn down a lot of very good concepts just because I didn't have room for all of them.

Updated my profile to include a mentor, Jimes Iggins.

I've created a profile for Bolkin, where you can gather most of the basic information about him. I also created a character sheet for more in-depth info, and linked it in the profile.

Looking at all the applications that popped up overnight, I'm a bit anxious to find out which of us make the cut. Best of luck to everyone.

Here is a post of critiques.

I'm going to do a quick list of 'good concepts' and 'needs work' apps here. I know a lot of these are works-in-progress, but hopefully this'll help that progress. Commentary is below that. If I missed someone, I'm sorry! Lemme know.

This might also be useful as a note to players for what classes/roles are already being applied for.

Good
Pravlox (sunshadow21) (Halfling Summoner)
Whimsical Bolkin (Zephyr Runeglyph) (Human Fighter)
Bilbo Bang-Bang (Halfling Cavalier)
Telparion (ubertripp) (Elven Rogue)
Obard (Shieldknight) (Halfling Rogue (Scout))
jamie noone (Human(?) Sorcerer)
Grukk (Morvik) (Half-Orc Bard (Savage Skald)
Fasterly Bowspittle (James Martin) (Halfling Cavalier)[except for the heirloom weapon bit]
Drosk (Max Hellspont) (Dwarven Cleric)

Needs Work
Crystal D'Glase (Sunset) [not core]
Malcom Cavendish (Filios) (Human Paladin) [background needs reworking/expansion to Kassen]
Annwylia (Human Ranger) [stats are too high; could use more background]

Alright, going in order.

@sunshadow: Looks great. I especially like the reflavoring of the forehead mark. It's also worth noting you have 9 HP (summoners are a d8 class).

@Zeph: Looks solid, though a little expansion couldn't hurt. I like that your personality is so at odds with your mentor.

@Crystal D'Glase: I'm afraid we have a miscommunication about what's core and that's my fault. I don't consider tieflings to be a core race. You'll need to rework the character or submit another.

@Bilbo Bang-Bang: I am sympathetic to cavaliers, so I'll work with you. A Medium dog is certainly easier to work with than a horse in any case.

@Telparion: That's a very interesting take on a rogue. He certainly doesn't fit in with the rogue mentor, but I am intrigued by him.

@Malcom Cavendish: Your redone stats look alright, and the base of the character is alright, but you might need to contort background a bit to get him to fit into Kassen.

@Obard: Good background, stats check out. Are you still looking for a way to ingratiate yourself with the mayor, or does mentor selection go far enough for you? You're free to come up with your own ideas, but if you need inspiration I'm happy to help. :)

@jamie noone: Honestly? I'm not even 100% sure Moltus is actually a sorcerer (he has no class listed). Feel free to pick whatever bloodline you wish. I really like the punch to your background, feel free to run with it.

@Annwylia: Your stats certainly aren't 20 point buy. A little more on her personality/background couldn't hurt. The ranger mentor also seems to serve the same basic role as her father; changing that might tie in to the adventure a little better.

@Morvik: Ooh, savage skald. That's an archetype whose flavor I like a lot. Orcs are a bit of a favored enemy in Nirmathas (and by extension Kassen), but I could see him charming his way in. I really do like the concept. As a note, the starting gold is average (so you've surely 49 and more).

@Fasterly: Now there's competition for the 'midget cavalier' spot, hehe. I like him; the only problem I can see is that Heirloom Weapon isn't core or APG (or at least it's not in the PRD).

I really should have realized this. I thought 'hey, a week gives everybody plenty of time', but people seem to whip up good stuff right quick. Picking just six here is tough, and I may wind up having to go with my 'hey, that's a really cool concept' biases as the deciding factor.

I normally like to try and stick to my deadlines, but if I wind up having to sort through dozens of apps I may go crazy. I knew I'd regret putting the deadline in the title, he-he.

I just want to say that there's a lot of good stuff here, and thank everybody thus far for applying.

here is the stats kind of sleepy so will write back story tomorrow.

Since you mentioned expansion, I added some more detail to the backstory in Bolkin's character sheet including his parents' occupation and his joining of the town guard.

Zeb I was going to toss in a concept as this is notionally a shorter term ride, but geez in the light of so many apps I'll leave you to the smorgasbord you have here.

But what I DID want to posty was that I am dead impressed by you coming on and letting the players know the good/needs work summaries and what they can/could do... no GM I've seen does that, so just wanted to give you a big THUMBS UP! for doing it :)

*Bows* Since I am already partaking in other PbP's, I shall bow out and allow others to have fun. =)

May the dice gods smile upon your endeavours.

Happy trails, then.

I appreciate you lightening my load a little, Shifty, heh.

I can see why someone wouldn't do it or be able to do it - it took me about an hour, apparently, to go over and type up what I did (and that was with a little help, too). And I actually enjoy picking through the numbers and such to see how people have done their characters!

The main reason I did it because that's exactly what some of my favorite GMs did - feedback, expansion, etc. Being involved with the potentials is very good, but time consuming and potentially 'wasted' effort, since no matter how much you love 'em you can't take 'em all. I don't begrudge anybody for not doing it, but I've got plenty of free time, so I'm willing to put in the extra bit to make things go more smoothly.

About the stats : they are not 20 pt buy but I would like to know if she has a chance before reworking her once again

Your point about her father and the mentor is good so amended description :
Anwyllia is a red headed girl , 16 years old , rather on the small (but wiry) side . When Merrilee , her mother died when she was but 8 , her father Kenalt took her along his hunting trips rather than letting her alone. When annwyllia reached puberty, Kenalt did not feel up to continue her education and made her study under Arnama in the mistaken idea it would allow anwyllia to grow up. While Anwillya did learn the practical aspect of living in the woods , she is sadly deficient in social skills. She is aware of the problem and tend to stay silent rather than blunder when in society. To be frank , she has a practical view of matters which some people could see as ruthless and she lacks strong views on ethical matters since such problems have never suggested to her

Dark Archive

Marcus (Charthagnion)

Tiefling Monk

Age: 19

Marcus was born into one of the more prestigious Cheliaxian houses and by all rights should have grown into just as dark an individual as the majority of his family, however in his youth Marcus had a 'nanny' so to speak. In truth this nanny was a slave of his family whom they had charged with overlooking little Marcus as his parents were far to busy to do so themselves. However Marcus' nanny was not a simply commoner in her life prior to slavery, no she had been a monk but in the battle that resulted in her capture her arms were horribly damaged and while they healed over time the likelihood of her ever being able to fight as she once had was an impossibility. She however saw a chance in her young charge, previously she had only been tasked with watching over children who had already for year has Chelaxian views drilled into there skulls. But now they had handed her a baby to watch over likely for quite some time. And so she set about teaching young Marcus in the ways that she had been taught and when finally it was time for young Marcus to begin his schooling(and thus she was no longer needed) the seeds of doubt were firmly planted within young Marcus. For years Marcus struggled with the beliefs he had been taught by her and what he was 'supposed' to believe until finally on his fifteenth birthday Macrus gathered a few basic supplies and left Cheliax all-together.
Recently(about a three months ago) Marcus arrived in Kassen, he had heard of a Monk who lived in the area that many claimed to be far too demanding and difficult of a teacher. With what little knowledge of the monk ways that he could remember from his youth and what he had managed to pick up from studying the training done at various temples Marcus sought out this woman in hopes that she could teach him the true way of a Monk.

After that I'd say it's safe to assume Ilimara drilled as much Monkness into Marcus as possible in the time he has been here. Perhaps a good way for him to be allowed into the ceremony would be Ilimara putting his name forward for it? As a sort of 'your basic training is complete, now go forth and seek perfection' sort of thing.

Strength: 16
Dexterity: 14
Constitution: 12
Intelligence: 12
Wisdom: 14
Charisma: 9

1st Level Feat: Improved Grapple
Monk Feat: Dodge

I chose Tiefling because those from Cheliax tend to be around demons rather frequently so it's not outside the realm of possibility that one could be born into one of the houses. If you want I'll switch things around and make him a human I suppose.

No problem. The heirloom weapon is easily swapped out. I'll look about and see what else looks promising instead.

@Obard: Good background, stats check out. Are you still looking for a way to ingratiate yourself with the mayor, or does mentor selection go far enough for you? You're free to come up with your own ideas, but if you need inspiration I'm happy to help. :)

I grabbed a mentor, Jimes Iggins, and worked it into my background. It actually fit nicely with what I had already written since I was wanting to have a job at the Tavern. I would still like something that connected me to joining the group that was chosen to go to the Crypt. Not sure what it may be.

Revised Background for Malcolm. Let me know your thoughts.

Malcom was born into a wealthy merchant family. He has always had the best of everything that nobility has to offer in the thriving city of Absalom. Recently, he was touched by a desire for something beyond the weapon training and environment that dominated his youth. His family had always worshiped Iomedae, but a visit from a traveling Paladin of the deity, Sir Cade Fairmount, changed his perspective. Sir Fairmount began the mentoring of Malcolm in all things having to deal with the pursuit of justice, honor and valor that could flow freely as gifts by the devout worship of Iomedae.

Sir Fairmount quickly recognized the wanderlust that Malcom expressed during his teachings of the young Paladin. Sir Fairmount's prior travels in the north, specifically the town of Kessen, left him befriended and in pretty regular communication with Sir Drammot. Sir Drammot, a Paladin in service to Lastwall, is respected by the people, though they wish he would leave them to their own devices and treat him as the foreigner he is. Sir Fairmount saw this as a potentially beneficial situation for Malcom because of the young Paladin's zeal for adventure and charasmatic personality. Sir Fairmount wrote an an extensive letter of introduction for Malcolm to carry with him to Sir Drammot that requested the continued mentoring of Malcolm by his long-time friend. Malcolm became very excited for the opportunity to continue his studies and worship abroad, and he immediately departed for Kessen with letter in hand. Malcolm had received the calling, and now can feel the deity at his shoulder as he sets forth into the world as a Warrior of Holy Light for Iomedae.

I can say for myself why I didn't. For me, all of the concepts put forth were good solid concepts, and while details would have needed to be been adjusted on some, I wasn't really looking at the full details at that stage; it was less a matter of making concepts fit and more of seeing which concepts worked well together and with the adventure. Both ways work, and how I do it for my more long term campaign (assuming the one shot doesn't turn into the long term, which is something I am keeping my mind open to) would be determined by the AP/adventure selected to start it out, as well as lessons learned from my current game.

I'm thinking Raven may be a fey bloodline sorceress - it fits her idea of witchcraft. My sense is that there are two challenges that influence her character: 1) lack of attention in a large family with a self-absorbed father and 2) attempt to distinguish herself from her many siblings, all of whom have sorcerous powers.

The first challenge she deals with by saying outrageous things to try to shock people. The second, I was thinking she tries to deny her heritage (with the witch story) and/or she tries to neglect it by being more martial. I'm not so sure if she can be effective with the martial option, though, and I don't want to handicap the party. I'm busy at work today, so I don't know if I'll be able to come up with an effective build until tonight.

Glad that you liked Grukk's application and if anyone is trying to fit a barbaric theme we could be from the same, now seperated clan, traveling together.

@ ZebulonXenos:

I've updated Telperion's profile with information tying him to the wizard mentor, Holgast. Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. And thanks again for the consideration and feedback.

Will have Mathias Orsza's profile up today. I know it might be overkill, but I kind of like the idea of two little person cavaliers. I think a nice dynamic could be worked out between them, especially if they have the same team work feats. I will be more than willing to work Mathias into another order if the story between them would be better as an odd couple sort of thing or they could both be the first into battle trying to show each other up. Thoughts?

I think it's like you said; an interesting idea, but probably overkill to have that many Cavaliers in the party. Of course, that's up to Zeb.

Also, I looked at Grukk's profile and he doesn't seem to specify his performance type. The avatar and parentheses after Summon Instrument seem to suggest Wind Instruments, but it couldn't hurt to jot it down for the record.

Speaking of, Grukk's assortment of weapons reminds me that I should probably look into additional weapons for Bolkin. The Flail is handy given how many Free Hand Fighter abilities rely on Disarm, but having a wide range of utility weapons would be nice, especially since FHFs don't seem to focus on a specific weapon class quite as much as most Fighters (though they are limited to one-handers).

Zeb, you got your hands full trying to decide between all of these characters! Looks like you're gonna have a dandy group - have fun man and good luck!
