Lleidr will wrinkle his nose at the smell of liquor on the farmer's breath. "Did everyone who went out to fix the problem find their courage in a bottle?"

"Might not be a bad idea," Selia mutters under her breath.

Then to the farmer, "Please, tell us everything you can remember. Any small detail might give us an edge."

Grump waves Selia away playfully. "Nah, I'm not hurt, at least not in my body. But, my eyes won't soon forget what I seen this morning."

"We're thinkin all the farms south of the Soggy are empty now, at least empty of decent folk. But this side of the river, something awful is stirring at the Hambley place.

"If you go down there, Hambley's got a big barn sitting across from his house. It might look empty from the outside, but when the doors opened up, we saw it was full of half-eaten animals and people, and the ground round it was littered with bones. The footpaths you take to get there are narrow, too, and when we was walkin through 'em, scarecrows lept out from the cornstalks and tore into us real bad.

"We didn't even get close to the house. A terror took over me after the corpses and scarecrows ran out of the barn. Something is in that house, though. And, if someone don't stop it, there won't be any farmers south of Sandpoint soon."

Sounds like something grim indeed - eaters of the dead maybe. We should hussle. Grump get to town as quick as you can and tell your story to the guards and the mayor. We may need to prepare them for some sort of attack if we fail.

He makes to move towards the farm.

Maybe we could fire the fields... that would drive whatever these scarecrows out - doubt the owner of the fields cares anymore about anything

She follows Nich.

"Well, let's be careful, but I don't think we should burn anything down. The people will need those grains, even if the farmers are lost to us. Let's go take a look, very carefully."

Can I get a KNO Local check from you all? I'll get an update posted later today.

Here's a map of the farmlands area in the Hambleys' immediate area:

Farmlands

You're on a narrow footpath, hemmed in by large fields of corn and other crops, which connect the various area farmsteads. The tall plants tower over you, creating ominous tunnels and giving you the impression of a maze. (get it, 'maize' ?)

You know that the Hambley farm is roughly south-east of where you stand right now. The map I've linked above has a large scale to track party movement as a whole. About a hundred feet south of your location, the pathway comes to a 4-way intersection. A scarecrow stands on his frame here, standing a lonely sentinel, not moving and staring towards the east.

Which way will you go at the intersection?

Ugh, this map image is awful. As you explore more of the area, it will make more sense. The intersection I mentioned is right at the square blocky thing that's covered by shadow.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

I can't tell by the map. Is there a road that goes towards Hambley's farm?

I cant tell either but for the moment lets take the path that leads to the farms.

"Didn't he say scarecrows were attacking? This one looks alright. Maybe we should burn it, just in case?"

Burn it all... its the only way to be sure

Farmland Map

NOTE - This map should be a little better. I forgot to point out that the party's location on this is noted by the small red triangle. Your approach has been from the north, and you're standing at a 4-way intersection. You know that the Hambley's are to be found somewhere roughly SW of your current location.

The scarecrow's damp clothes smolder with reluctance in the cool autumn air. To the south, where the road bends, you can see three more scarecrows hanging above the stalks of wheat and corn. Their backs face one another, as they each hang in silent sentinel of the wide fields spread at their feet.

Testing ...

Can you guys try this link and let me know if you can access it?

Should be same Farmland Mpa as above

i can

So, I meant to ask what direction from the 4-way intersection you're going to take.

Left ?

Left would be east? I'd vote south.

Female Asimar Bard 2/Monk 2 | HP ?/? | AC 18; T 18; FF 14 | CMD 18 | F +3 R +9 W +8 | Init +4 | Perc +9 | Active: None

South it is

[Two Days After Sandpoint Murders, Sandpoint Hinterlands, Early Afternoon]

The south foothpath winds through the looming stalks and at the bend in the path forks where the three scarecrows you spied earlier stand. The paths now go southeast and southwest. In either direction, you can see that the paths diverge further:

The southeast path will intersect into a path going northeast and southwest.

The southwest path will intersect into a path going northwest and southeast.

Clear as mud? (NOTE - your current position is noted on this Farmlands map at the red triangle). You're trying to determine which way to go next, when ahead of you, two of the scarecrows rip free from their supports and lunge towards you with a horrific cry.

"We must feed!"

No one is surprised by this turn of events, startling though they are. Initiative:

Nich
Ned
Lleidr
Scarecrows
Selia

So, I need actions from the first 3 characters please. Here's the combat map . It shows 3 scarecrows, but the one with the light blue halo is still attached to his stand, not moving.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

Ned will quickdraw his greatsword and ready an action attacking the first scarecrow to come within reach.

"I suppose it was just a matter of time until the furniture started attacking us."
greatsword: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 7 - 2 + 1 = 20 (power attack, monster hunter)
damage: 2d6 + 4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6, 6) + 4 + 4 + 1 = 21

The leaf-shaped scar on Lleidr's left hand will glow just a bit as he conjures an Acid Splash at the scarecrow on the left [map perspective].

Acid Splash (ranged touch attack): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2

Female Asimar Bard 2/Monk 2 | HP ?/? | AC 18; T 18; FF 14 | CMD 18 | F +3 R +9 W +8 | Init +4 | Perc +9 | Active: None

Selia casts Barkskin on herself.

If we don't get an action from Nich within the next hour or so, I'm going to say that he's delaying until Selia goes.

[Two Days After Sandpoint Murders, Sandpoint Hinterlands, Early Afternoon, Round 1 Part 1]

Lleidr moves a bit to the side and lobs a globe of acid. The glob misses its target and instead dissolves several stalks into an oozing puddle of hissing green goo.

The first scarecrow lunges at Ned with terrific speed, but the ranger is faster, and in a blink, the sack-covered head is rolling down a muddy furrow while its body crumples to the ground.

The second scarecrow runs and jabs forward at the ranger. Claws scrape Ned's breastplate, setting your teeth on edge from the uncomfortable sound.

Here's the updated combat map. Next up: Nich & Selia

Just to be clear on this map: the scarecrow with the blue halo is not moving and is still on his stand. The middle scarecrow is attacking Ned. The scarecrow with the skull image on him is the one Ned just killed.

The air around these two scarecrows has a malingering odor of spoiled meat.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

"Rotting meat. Think those men were tortured and killed by scarecrows?"

Init +2|AC15(17)/Touch10/Flatfoot15|CMD 12||HP 13[13]| Fort:+4 ;Ref:+0 ;Wil:+5|Percept +9/Sense Motive +9. Longsword +10 1d8+4 CMB +6 Channel (4d6) l 0/[3] Male Half Varisian Human Cleric of Iomadae/1 (Favoured Class)

Nicholae draws his sword and hacks at the one attacking Ned.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Female Asimar Bard 2/Monk 2 | HP ?/? | AC 18; T 18; FF 14 | CMD 18 | F +3 R +9 W +8 | Init +4 | Perc +9 | Active: None

Selia engages as well, with her short spear.

attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Oh yeah, might as well go ahead and get Ned and Lleidr's actions too, for the first half of round 2.

8th lvl Halfling (Rogue 6/Sorcerer 2); 22, 2'10", 32#; Str 8, Dex 20, Con 13, Int 8, Wis 9, Cha 16; AC: 21 (touch 17, ff n/a); hp 64; Initiative +5

Lleidr will try to circle around into a flanking position, drawing the FoE, hitting it with Arcane Strike, and stabbing at the scarecrow.

FoE: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 +2 if flanking
damage: 1d3 + 0 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 0 + 1 = 4 plus Sneak Attack damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5 if flanking and the monster isn't immune

FoE crit confirm: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
crit damage: 1d3 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3 +1 if Arcane Strike applies to this bonus damage

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

"Hmmm, it might be dead already but just in case...
greatsword: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 7 - 2 + 1 = 20 (power attack, monster hunter)
damage: 2d6 + 4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4, 6) + 4 + 4 + 1 = 19

Yep, it's dead too. The 3rd scarecrow remains bound to its stake, giving no discernible movement.

Here's the overland map once more:

Farmlands

Your choices now are to go north (which is whence you came), southeast, or southwest. In either southern path, you can see that they diverge further:

The southeast path will intersect into a path going northeast and southwest.

The southwest path will intersect into a path going northwest and southeast.

What's next, folks?

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

"Lets take a closer look at these things and find out what we're dealing with. Why do they smell like rotting meat? Is someone dressing up zombies as scarecrows?"

How about a KNO Religion for anyone taking a closer look, please.

Eaters of the Dead! Ghouls. Beware their claws can inflict paralysis and their dreadful maws can infect a man with Ghoul Fever, which, when fatal turns a man into one of their dread number. We should have bought antiplague - we must do so for any bitten who feel feverish on our return to make certain they are proofed against it.
