Lleidr will examine the floor and walls to see if he can determine the high water mark.

"Does anyone know anything about sailing or the tides? Can we expect this pool to drain away at some point?"


The high water mark shows the room to be pretty closed to low tide right now. At high tide, it appears the water gets a few inches deeper, and that's all.

Right now, the water's probably a foot deep, near the square room. However, near the western walls, the water is much darker and it looks like a hole has opened in the floor.

Anyone know how to swim? Maybe we can use a rope as well?

Lleidr's actually worse at swimming (-1) than he is at climbing. Stoopid Strength-based skills.

I am reluctant to strip out of this armour - its a bugger to put back on - but I'll go in if you all will see I am roped. Is Hakak willing to go? I think he'd be a stronger swimmer.

Without wading in too far (that foot depth is up over his knees), Lleidr will look through the bits in the water for anything of interest, again pausing to use Detect Magic to aid his search.

Ned can swim. +4 with his armor, +7 without. It might be better to have him stand guard though

Ned will ready an action to shoot anything that molests Selia.

You can easily walk over to the good stuff without needing to swim. The floor near the square room seems littered with coins, and you do perceive an arcane aura amidst the rubble.

Before you can examine the aura any longer, the massive gold helmet shifts and moves, rotating as if the horrifying visage is trying to get a better look at you. The bottom lip of the helm rises, and from underneath, a pair of immense claws and spindly legs reaches out towards you ...

Ned, you can take your shot if you want, but it's going to have cover against you, plus Lleidr's already in melee with it (-8 penalty). But if you take your shot, you still get to act this round, since you declared a readied action.

Unless stated otherwise (if the real Hakak shows up), Hakak will run around and try the second door, since it looks like it connects to the square room.

One other thing to note - movement in the room is difficult terrain.


Scratch that ... movement in the shallow water is difficult terrain ... movement in the halls or the room is normal.


Does Jubrayl have room to take a move action and then attack the giant crab? The map looks .... crowded, at best. Or would his best bet be to follow Hakak around and try the other door? That would take both of our main melee guys out of the fight for two rounds, at least.

If an attack can be resolved:
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
thats a potential crit:
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
...but there's no way a natural one confirms. Blah.

[Early Afternoon, Thistletop, 12th Day After Goblin Raid, Round One, Thistletop Second Level]

Ned eases into the room, and fires his readied shot. The arrow punctures the crab’s outer shell-like body and sinks deep into its soft flesh. Ned then waits till Lleidr moves.

Jubrayl let loose with a terrific blow.

Hakak turns around, and sure enough, the second door opens into this same room.

Selia takes a step away from the monster and begins casting.

With no opening, Nich holds off on an attack for now.

Lleidr carefully steps away from the enormous crab.

Ned closes, and slams his sword down upon the beast with all his might. But, his blade bounces off the monster’s thick carapace.

Massive claws reach out at Jubrayl and Ned. The first merely bounces off Jubrayl’s shield, but the second bashes into Ned’s side (7 hp dmg). Ned is barely able to wriggle free from the grasping pincers.

Since Ned had to delay so that his attack happened after Lleidr moved (and Lleidr was originally last to go), I think the Bulls Strength is effective this round.

Selia finishes her spell, as an eagle swoops in to attack from the back.

As the eagle attacks, she casts a Bless spell to aid her friends.

Once again, Jubrayl’s blade smashes into the massive creature, shattering a huge part of its carapace into slivers.

His axe held aloft, Hakak jumps into the water, and chops at the beastie’s snapping claws and armored spindly legs.

Selia’s Bless gives each of you renewed vigor and spirit, and her newly appeared eagle tears and claws at the crab.

In unison with Selia, Nich bestows a blessing of his own upon Ned.

An arcane bolt flies from Lleidr’s mystic wand and smacks the giant crab.

Ned draws back his sword in readiness for a powerful blow. Twisting his body to dodge the crab’s mindless assault, he closes and swings his blade with terrific strength. The crab’s underside cracks and goes to pieces like crockery dropped on a stone floor. The creature collapses into the shallow pool, with the helmet falling on its side.

After rummaging through the pool for roughly ten minutes, you’ve uncovered:
- 3500 sp
- 630 gp
- 40 gems
- A jade amulet (has a magic aura)
- And the helmet itself appears valuable as well, although its size may present an obstacle to removal

NOTE – I didn’t upload a new map image since the combat is over.

He turns his attention to the amulet.

Once we've gotten the treasure piled up, Lleidr will ask, "Does anyone have any other places they want to explore here? I feel like we've reached the end of this complex."

Lleidr wouldn't mind moving the portable treasure back up top to some fresh air. We could set up a campfire and have crab for dinner! If the group's agreeable to that, he'll spend some of the downtime Appraising the gems and Spellcrafting the amulet.

Appraise: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 I can make 40 of these if you want, but I thought I'd start with one.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

As for the giant gold mask, if it comes down to it, I suppose we could buy a Shrink Item scroll? That reduced the size and weight for up to a few days.

Oh, and before I completely forget...
That historian guy back in Sandpoint wanted some more information about the art and carvings and whatnot here, so Lleidr will spend some time examining the walls in the treasure room, the carvings on the double doors, and (if it's still active) the magical image who's speech we translated the first time we were down here.

I'm a little lost as to what we're doing. Are we going to try to explore that last area, back on the mainland, or are we jumping forward to back in town?

Lleidr would like to try exploring the sea cave at the bottom of the hole. He's more than willing to try the same plan as before, hopefully with a better Climb roll this time :) Or we could try scaling down the cliff and accessing the cave that way?

Ned would like to check the sea cavealthough he has reservations on our methodology. There has to be a better way to get the party down there. If we salvage the rope bridge would it make a sevicable ladder?


Jubrayl would love nothing more than to drop Lleidr down the deep pit and find out what's in the water. Failing that, finding some way to explore the lower reaches of that sea cave without harm to our resident rogue would also be acceptable :-)

I don't know about that Ned... I am no engineer. It may work as a ladder but we'd be without means of getting off this rock if we can't put it back afterwards... I say we head back to town if we can't get our little friend there with a rope.

Maybe I'm mistaken. I thought we didn't have to cross the bridge to get to the sea cave?


Ned - correct about the sea cave's location. It's under the cliffs, on the mainland. But the bridge could be rigged to provide a way to climb down the cliff face. Of course, you could just use a regular rope to achieve the same effect.

Looking down the face of the cliff, you see no opening to the cave below above water. Under the water, Lleidr spies an opening in the rock which leads south in the direction of the cave.

Crap. Lleidr's sbout as good a swimmer as he is climber. You guys' armor won't help your swim rolls either. Neither? I never can remember. Maybe we give the halfling on a rope another try? If we don't make any progress, wd can get on back to town.
