My skill ranks are in short supply but I's got to get some Know: Engineering at some stage, if only to be able to make take 10s

Its hard being a priest of the god of tactics and war and yet get crappy skill ranks and selection.

Warriors need to just hit stuff, but a priest needs to be so much more.


I'm officially on vacation now. I might post a new turn tomorrow, but if not, I'll start up again on 11/9.

If we've cleaned the place out minus the boss the half Orc was speaking of, then I don't know what to do. It's an island with no bridge for the moment so I'm lost as to what to do to find her apart from maybe calling out 'Narula' as we walk around.

Just my player instinct...I don't think there'll be much behind either of the proper doors, but suspect the tunnel off the cave will lead to her.

So, of the many things that bug me about Pathfinder, traps are close to the top of the list. One big one is that you can just Take 20 on them ... but so many Trap DCs are in the range of 20 - 30 (with 30 at higher levels). So, if i have a +10 to Perception by the time the DCs approach 30, i still only have to Take 20 to avoid just about any trap.

Another thing - Perception is a move action. 3 seconds! So, if I Take 20, then I've spent a whole minute to find a trap. It seems to me that searching a 5x5x10 cube should take far longer than a minute ... more like 30 minutes or an hour.

Another thing: they don't really explain how magic traps work in the rules very well. How does a thief deactivate a magical trap? I guess the GM is supposed to fill in the blanks on the details somehow.

First off, stop thinking so much and just keep doling out the xp ;-)

Just looked over the actual rules for traps. Note that you can take 20 for Perception checks (the trap's not going anywhere) but not for Disable Device (locks, yes, traps, no). Taking 20 assumes there's no penalty for failure, so you keep trying until you get a 20. With a Disable Device check, you can only retry if you miss the check by 4 or less. So I'd say that disqualifies it from taking 20. Also, a really mean DM could rule a failed attempt sets off the trap.

Also, a +10 to Perception ain't easy to scrape up. Admittedly, Lleidr started at a small penalty with his lower Wisdom (-1), but I chose a race that gave a bonus, maxed out the points I could put in at rogue levels, chose a familiar partially 'cause I got a bonus, and had to level to 2 for a class bonus. With all that, I'm still only +9 for finding a trap. As for disabling, I maxed out my DEX and rogue level skill points and chose a feat to get to +12. With a take 20 Perception, I can find magic traps with up to 4th level effects, but an average roll of 10 (+12) I don't have a chance to disable a magic trap (minimum DC 25 with a 0 lvl spell effect). [Please note that I'm only saying this after Lleidr got past the trap in the current scenario!]

As for getting through the search so quickly, I think of it the way we've done some of Lleidr's searching for traps - rather than rolling a check every 5' of a corridor, he keeps an eye out for likely spots to set traps and then actively searches. With this, I think of it more like how long does it take him to go over the most likely spots and then move on from there until the trap's found. Sort of like when a character in a movie is looking for the lever in a bookcase to open the secret door and they start with the odd, stand out books first.

I'll admit I got no defense of the way the rules handle magic traps as opposed to mundane ones. It's a cut and dried, mechanics are all that matter approach for sure! I think you did a fine job filling in the details on your last post.


So, yeah, on your bonus, you're already at +9 and we're only level 3. But, at this point, most of the DCs for finding a trap are only 20 or so. You'll always find them, if you look. Which isn't that big a deal, but the search action itself is so fast. It ought to cost a lot of time to find a trap.

Granted, this one was obvious and isn't a good example.

So, my question about Acrobatics and AoO's. Obviously we don't see your rolls, Zilt, and I don't know if you want to reveal any of the behind-the-curtain stuff, but I was wondering if you made multiple Acrobatics rolls for Tsuto (he moved through 1 area threatened by Jubrayl, 1 area threatened by both of us, and 1 area Lleidr threatens)? Or does one roll take care of it all? I've been rolling for every threatened square Lleidr moves through and was wondering if that's necessary. Also, I'm not so concerned about Lleidr's 13 CMD (although I guess Tsuto could roll really low), but Jub's 18 is pretty good, so I just wondered if all the possible rolls were made?

Also, I'm guessing the unarmed strike didn't provoke an AoO because Tsuto's a monk? Bastard. I hate monks.


Nice catch. Yes, I should have made 2 Acrobatics checks, and I believe each successive one increases the DC by 2. So, applying the first result vs Lleidr, and Tsuto passes easily. I then rolled a relatively lower number for the 2nd check just now (DC = 18 + 2) and ... he still passes, but just barely. Imagine Jubrayl's axe barely gliding past Tsuto's neck.

Yes, I'd rather not detail the numbers behind the NPC abilities. I see a lot of that going on in online games (which is another thing that drives me up the wall with PF). Me forgetting a rule, though, is fair game. You'd think the Core rulebook would have pointed this out, but I didn't see it under the Acrobatics skill.

Hmm .. is Tsuto a monk? Good question!
