Myradil Melrani |
Myradil nods at the addition of the imp to the team and is generally in a better mood, with his acceptance into the Ravens.
Eliastraza Malifinion |
Elias spends little time with the group over the next week, his normally dour self nearing to foul tempered with the addition of the imp and the Abadaran. The Abadaran may still prove to be different from the others of his faith, and be worthy of trust. The imp, Elias feels certain, will not. If he could be confident of a method to dispose of the little beast without risking it's knowledge of their activities spreading to it's assuredly Chellish masters, he would bury the thing.
With such unpleasant stresses within the ravens, Eliastraza seeks the comforts of old, steady friends. He spends much of the time catching up with Georfin Stonebrow at the bar known as the Tooth and Nail. Elias feels some small flickerings of guilt for evading Georfin's questions as to what he's been up to lately, deflecting them with chatter about trying to find a wealthy sponsor. Georfin knows the importance of secrets and how to keep them, Elias reasons. When his work eventually becomes public, as it surely must, hopefully the dwarf would accept such reasoning gratefully.
GM Xynen |
As the week moves on, quietly for the Raven's, Rexus starts to ask Femi and Myradil for help finishing up the translation of the Raven's documents. He's come up with a code breaker he believes to be reliable, and he teaches the two Ravens how to follow it and piece together in information. Near the end of the week, the three manage to complete the last few pages of documents and Rexus compiles a list of the information they discovered.
• The Silver Ravens were established in 4606 ar in the wake of the chaos that swept over Cheliax after Aroden’s death to help protect the city of Kintargo from oppression.
• The woman who founded the Silver Ravens was a mysterious elf known only as “Jackdaw,” a figure who, before the advent of the Age of Lost Omens, built herself into a sort of Kintargan folk hero who fought for the rights of the city’s downtrodden.
• Many of the Silver Ravens were adventurers or worshipers of Milani. Jackdaw, a swashbuckler, was the most powerful and influential of them all, but others who rose to particular prominence among the Silver Ravens were Amyreid (a female half-elf cleric of Milani), Ba (a male halfling enchanter), Kyda (a female human rbard), and Brakisi (a male human ranger)
• The Silver Ravens defended Kintargo from being conquered no fewer than a dozen times during the Chelish Civil War: five times from power-hungry noble families, four times from agents of Thrune, once from an invasion of skum from the sea, once from a cabal of Nidalese vampires, and once from a blue dragon named Rivozair.
• The Silver Ravens maintained their main headquarters in and below the Kintargo Opera House; unfortunately, no information in the documents indicates any other safe houses the group may have maintained.
• The Silver Ravens were said to be able to use something called the “Song of Silver” to defend Kintargo when it was attacked by enemies, but sadly, no additional information as to what this mysterious song was can be found in these notes. Rexus implores the PCs to keep an eye out for further clues as to this intriguing notation. (More details on the “Song of Silver” will be revealed in upcoming adventures, but for now, attempts to learn more about this topic should be met with dead ends—House Thrune’s redactors were particularly thorough in erasing this bit of information from history).
• The last section translated speaks of how the leaders of the Silver Ravens had seen the proverbial writing on the wall—they knew House Thrune was likely to seize control, and had come to the difficult decision to surrender should this event come to pass, hoping to prevent Thrune from razing Kintargo. Indications exist that the cache of treasure and documents hidden in the Fair Fortune were intended to serve as a sort of time capsule, should Kintargo forget the Silver Ravens with the passage of time.
When he's done discussing his findings with everyone over dinner, he clears his throat and begins a topic a little closer to home, at least for him.
"Hmm, where to start?" He says with a slight chuckle, as he collects his thoughts. "I haven't brought this up yet because I wasn't sure anyone would believe me, but...well, I'm not entirely convinced my mother is dead." He lets the notion hang in the air for a moment, Laria nearly chokes on her drink when he says what he's been thinking and Rexus turns a little red.
"As I told you, my my mother was a member of the Sacred Order of Archivists. Well, what I have not mentioned is that I also know where they would gather, and sometimes hide out, if their enemies were close to discovering them."
"There is a museum of...oddities, within the city called Hocum’s Fantasmagorium, and it has a number of chambers and tunnels beneath it that the Order would use, particularly to store information. I'm almost convinced this is where my mother is hiding and...well...I would like your help discovering the truth. If you don't mind."
Laria, having recovered from her coughing fit looks at Rexus curiously, but then turns her eyes toward the Raven's Officers.
"I...am skeptical that his mother is still alive, but, this hideout idea makes a lot of sense. Even if Rexus' mother didn't make it, other members of the order may be hiding beneath the museum. For what it's worth boys, I think you should check it out."
Rexus produces the mithril key that the party discovered shortly after meeting the ex-noble. "This key opens various doors within Hocum's. It's been locked up for years now, but...if you do decide to go, this may get you in."
Euphemia 'Femi' Ferka |
Femi looks at the key anew. "Well, when you put it that way - how can we refuse!" he smiles, patting the man on the back.
"Whether your mother is alive or no - this is clearly something we must investigate. And if she is alive, we'll bring back word, I promise."
"I really want to do something about Albia too, but she can wait. This is just too juicy."
He thinks a moment, "Do we want to take this during the day or at night? Might not matter either way. Anyone see an advantage?"
Kalem Riker |
Kalem grips Rexus's shoulders and gives him a serious look.
"I can relate my friend. I will do this for you for all you have done for us, and because it is right.."
To Femi:
"If we're seen outside at night, it may raise suspicion. If we're seen during the day, if its a well-known building, we may have the same problem... But I'm not sure which would be better."
Eliastraza Malifinion |
"Day." Elias breaks in firmly.
"Remember our plan. We shall operate openly, and let others skulk in the shadows. Being seen...casing... such a place in the night would not befit the image we seek to cultivate."
Brask Ulbreaker |
Brask sips some coffee and thinks. "Night." he votes. "We will draw attention either way creeping about such a place; at least at night we wont drag any innocents into the matter."
-Posted with Wayfinder
Myradil Melrani |
Myradil ponders a bit before speaking up "I would think daylight would treat us better, but Brask has a good point as well."
Kalem Riker |
Kalem chuckles.
"Are we at an impasse then? Two votes cast opposite, with three wavering in the middle."
He turns to Rexus.
"Can you tell us more about this building? Is it completely abandoned? Is it in a heavily populated area? Would it be strange to see people go inside?"
Euphemia 'Femi' Ferka |
Assuming the building information doesn't change things...
Femi nods, "Yeah, let's go by day. I prefer to operate in the daylight. That should swing the vote I think. Let's be off!"
He's excited to investigate, and maybe use one or two of his new scrolls...
GM Xynen |
Rexus thinks for a moment when asked about the building, when he starts to talk, it's mostly about the history of the museum and less about how well known it is today.
"The structure was the passion of a struggling stage magician and salesman named Braedan 'Hocum' Azperex. The man had the building constructed a year after the Chelish Civil War ended, with the goal of 'bringing whimsy and joy back to Kintargo.' His plan was to have the Fantasmagorium serve as a museum of fantastic oddities and 'authentic' magical phenomena. His charm and showmanship transformed the bizarre concept into a minor success for many years, but when the exhibits (many of which were either grossly exaggerated or utter hoaxes) began to lose some of their novelty, the Fantasmagorium struggled to make ends meet. It finally went out of business 20 years ago, and Hocum died not long thereafter—the building has remained shut down and something of an eyesore ever since.Once the Fantasmagorium began struggling financially, the Sacred Order of Archivists secretly purchased the building from Hocum to use as its own hidden headquarters."
He shrugs, and apologizes for not know more. The museum is at least in a somewhat out of the way area of the city, in a lesser traveled area of Red Roof, but he can't guarantee the party won't spotted entering it.
In any even, the Ravens take off toward the museum and discover for themselves that it's mostly unwatched. No one seems to be interested in them as they wander around the front of it. The building has obviously seen better days, but it's still standing upright despite the misuse. Slipping the mithril key into the lock opens the front doors easily enough and the ravens can see the old box office beyond, and all of it's theatrical costumes, paint warn posters and old banners.
Macabre taxidermy and menacing skeletons line the walls of the third room, a fifty-foot circular chamber. A middling-quality fresco of terrifying and fantastic beasts lines the domed ceiling overhead. Large double doors lie to the northeast, southeast, and northwest; the northwest doors hang wide open.

"Hold." he says quietly as he begins to move around the room. A few moments later, he opens his hand to show a 1 platinum piece, 4 gold pieces, and what is obvious to him as a ring of swimming. He had seen many a sailor with such a ring at the docks in his youth.
Any idea where to start? Kalem asks as he pockets the findings to be split later.

"Good spot Elias, and good find Kalem. I doubt any of us will want the ring, and it'll fetch a good price at the market! This trip is already a success."
He looks around the room. "Well, when in doubt, pick a direction and follow it through! Shall we head to the right?", he suggests picking more or less at random.
Brask Ulbreaker |
"Yeah, right seems fine." Brask says, putting a hand on his saber but not drawing it. He hefts his shield. "I'll go first."
Brask will take the lead. He's moving cautiously, at a speed of 10 while others come behind him. He will be, of course, looking out for trouble.
GM Xynen |
Myradil, that just means you're no longer logged in to Roll20, once you log in you should be able to follow the link without issue.
As Brask moves to the doors on the right, one of the macabre displays springs to life from the 'Arcadian Skunk Ape' exhibit. A trio of skeletal beasts descends on the party and attacks before they can so much as jump.

Femi reacts quickly with three force bolts fired at each of their attackers. Each one hits and a cacophony of clattering bone rings throughout the circular room as two of the apes fall to the floor.
Brask slashes at blue and hits, but the sharp edge of his cutlass doesn't faze the fallen skeleton much.
Kalem has a lot more luck with the force of his fists and kicks shatter the green skeleton, making sure it won't be standing back up every again.
With green down, Myradil tries to assist against red, but can't quite place his spear well enough to damage his foe.
Elias strikes at red, and hits, but finds his blow hardly more effective than Brasks.
Red continues its assault on Elias, and drops the Elf to the ground with a swift swing from it's club.

To the right, Kalem finds nothing but a set of doors opening to an empty closet. In fact, most of the double doors lead no where. A gag? An exhibit? Perhaps a miscommunication between the adventures author and the maps artist? There's no clear answer, forcing the Ravens to go through the already open doors to their left, perhaps more wary now that one of their own almost fell.
The next room is full of water tanks, most you can barely peer into because of the algae that has been left to grow. The few that are clear enough to inspect house nothing but bones, the bodies of sea creatures long ago left to starve in their tanks. The main attraction of this exhibit is a dead reeefclaw labeled as a "Quadclaw Murderer!"
The room after that contains a somewhat stranger sight. The exhibit is dedicated to insects, once again, long dead. Their bodies litter the tanks and cages like old snake moltings, but one body is considerably more fresh.
Slumped over a terrarium is a decaying human, with one hand still in the terrarium clutching something with a golden tint. The man's skin, what's left of it, is covered in strange marks that might have once been bug bites but it's hard to tell for certain.

Euphemia 'Femi' Ferka |
Femi pricks his ears up at Myradil's information, "A swarm? Damn, and I didn't bring along a burning hands for the day. Be very wary indeed. I have a pair of alchemy flasks, but nothing of substance I'm afraid."
Femi does indeed approach warily. He idly casts Detect Magic and gives the room a quick scan.
Yes, Infernal Healing will heal 10hp total. Welcome back from the nearly dead Elias!

The small spider is too quick for Myradil to hit, and it manages to scurry to the side, safely away from his spear.
The spiders take their opportunity to attack the party, most of them are unable to penetrate the Raven's defenses but a few make it through. Poor Femi continues to be bitten the most.

Elias hisses at the burning sting of the spider bite, and calls out "Myradil, brace yourself!"
Elias grabs his Harp and brandishes it aloft, muttering a swift prayer to his goddess. A single harsh, strident note rings out of it and through the room.
Myradil, you and Brask are the uninjured ones, and between the two of you, you are more likely to make the save. Sorry about this! I'll hit him next turn if it comes to that!
Will save, DC 16, from all of the spiders and Myradil, for half damage.
