XCOM: Enemy Unleashed

Game Master JDPhipps

Originally assigned as UN Peacekeepers after a mysterious incident in the Middle East, a group of exceptional individuals have been recruited by a mysterious government organization after it's discovered that Earth is facing an imminent alien invasion.

1 to 50 of 80 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Hey all, I'm going to start up a game in the vein of the XCOM series. I'm not going to give away the story yet, exactly; suffice to say, you will not actually start as part of the XCOM initiative. Instead, you are all serving as members of the UN Peacekeeping Force who will stumble upon proof of an alien invasion, which will lead to you being inducted into XCOM proper. What I will tell you is the general basis of your first mission: In the year 2019, something eradicated the Iraqi city of Basra. While armed conflicts in the region have begun to die down in recent months, this threatens to ignite a full-scale war as different nations accuse the other of attacking the city for their own ends. As a neutral force, you have all been sent in as UN Peacekeepers in order to secure the area and figure out what happened to the city. Whatever did the damage kicked up sandstorms and a lot of dust, meaning it's been difficult to impossible to reach the city until now, five days after the incident.

As for the crunch, I'll be using Savage Worlds system for this campaign, and at least for the moment we'll be using just modern day armor and weaponry. Later on in the game I'll be bringing in more variant rules, such as cybernetic or genetic modifications (including things like MEC troopers), as well as introducing Arcane Backgrounds in the form of Psionics. However, for now I ask that characters be made with only the SW Core Book. If there's something from another book you'd like to use that fits with a modern setting, let me know and I'll approve it on a case by case basis. Without further ado, here are the character creation rules:

  • Point Buy: 6 Attribute, 16 Skill.
  • Edges: No Arcane Backgrounds; once introduced Arcane Background (Psionics) and any edges requiring it will become available.
  • Hindrances: 1 Major, 2 Minor.
  • Wealth: $1000.
  • Experience:10 XP, giving you two Advances.

  • Skills:When purchasing a new skill, you may also increase a skill that is lower than its linked attribute by one die type, including the newly purchased skill.
  • Arcane Backgrounds: Once available, purchasing an Arcane Background also automatically grants a d4 in the associated skill required to use that Background's powers.

What am I looking for in a character?

Other than being finished mechanically, I do want at least some basic backstory elements for your characters. UN Peacekeepers are not necessarily members of a nation's military; they can also be private contractors or civilian police officers. Tell me a little about your character, so I know they aren't just a stat block. Also, keep in mind I AM trying to choose a balanced party, so I am looking for characters that will mesh together mechanically. The game will feature elements other than pure combat as well, so neglecting skills that you wouldn't use in a fight isn't necessarily a great idea. There will be a place for characters with good Charisma, or who are skilled at operating vehicles or at traversing areas unnoticed. However, you ARE fighting aliens: making a character who doesn't participate in combat isn't going to get you far either.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask here or PM me. If you would like to play but don't know the system/don't have access to the books, get in touch with me and I'll see what I can do. SW is a very simple system and easy to pick up, in my opinion. A lack of familiarity will not disqualify you.

    Happy hunting!

  • Dotting for interest. I have a combat medic character in mind.

Hmm...dotting this for interest.. Before I stat up a character though, wanted to run this concept by you.

Harland Davis is a UN Peacekeeper, yes, but he is also an ex-CIA SAD Operator. He hasn't entirely left the Company, but with recent events, they want him back in for.. observation. Assigning him to the Peacekeepers in Basra is the first step.

That's a perfectly fine background, sure. As long as your character can reasonably end up working as a UN Peacekeeper, the path they take to get there is probably going to be okay with me. Thanks for running the concept by me first, though; it sounds interesting. If you have any additional questions about it, feel free to PM me or ask them here.

Dotty dot, that's what I got!

I will think about a good concept and run it by you soon.

Dot. Alright, here's Jackalyn Chase's dossier. A few questions, though: Will we be using encumberance, and will we keep track of ammo?

    DOSSIER: JACKALYN CHASE:

    FULL NAME: Jackalyn Chase
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: United Kingdom Special Forces
    RANK: Lance Corporal

    HEIGHT: 180 centimetres
    WEIGHT: 156 pounds
    HAIR: Red, regulation short
    EYES: Green
OTHER FACIAL FEATURES: Light dusting of freckles across bridge of nose and beneath eyes.
    AGE: 23
    SEXUALITY: Lesbian
    RELIGION: Agnostic

PRE-SERVICE HISTORY: Jackalyn Chase was born to Cynthia Locke Chase and Johnathan Chase on November 22nd, 1995 at 18:36 (Greenwich Mean Time Zone) in North Middlesex Hospital. IQ tests recovered from Saint John and Saint James C of E Primary School shows average intelligence, although interviews with her teachers reveal that she was rather creative and artistic, if a bit withdrawn, in her early years. She lived with her mother and father at 20 Grove Street, London SE8 3NA. In the words of Jackalyn Chase, she lived in "domestic bliss" for her childhood and teenage years. Her little sister, Evalyn Chase, was born on June 3rd, 2005 at 11:03 (Greenwich Mean Time Zone), also in North Middlesex Hospital. Chase's school record is nothing exceptional: average grades all around, except in her art class, where she repeatedly earned grades above 90%. Her art teacher commented, "She was such a nice girl. So, so nice, if a bit quiet. And talented, too! Pity she joined the army." In addition, Chase did extraordinarily well on the track team, often winning her team the gold. Chase came out to her parents about her sexuality in 2011. Despite her parents' Christian beliefs, they made no issue of it. Immediately after graduating high school in 2014, Chase joined the military.

SERVICE RECORD: After scoring extremely well on physical aptitude tests and her psychiatric evaluation, Chase was given a wide variety of career options. She opted to join the United Kingdoms Special Forces. Chase began to dismantle ISIS operations in Afghanistan under the command of Sergeant Anwen Hudson. Investigation as to whether Hudson and Chase were in a romantic relationship or were engaged in sexual congress has been inconclusive thus far. In 2017, most of Chase's unit was killed in action in an ISIS bombing. Chase defended the three remaining members of her squad for two months as she hunted down and killed the ISIS cell that murdered her squad. Investigation of whether any kills Chase made during this time constituted as war crimes is still undergoing, but it is expected that Chase will be pardoned if they are determined as such due to extenuating circumstances and her status as a national celebrity. After two months, a helicopter searching for the ISIS cell Chase has eliminated found the remainder of Chase's squad and picked them up. Chase, due to suspected post-traumatic stress disorder and injuries sustained while protecting her squad was relieved of duty for nine months. She was awarded the Victoria Cross, the Military Cross, and the George Cross.

CELEBRITY STATUS: Due waning public support of the war against ISIS, the United Kingdom Special Forces released Chase's story to the press three months into her recovery. The story went viral, as it appealed to nearly every demographic, and it stayed on the headlines for a month, and remained news for four months after that. Chase received a large amount of money collected from various civilian military support charities in recognition of her bravery. The overwhelming public support helped speed her recovery from PTSD, and it appears that Chase is ready for operations again. However, it appears that she wishes to take a less aggressive role, and Chase has requested that she be reassigned to the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces.

PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION, POS-2017: This evaluation was taken directly from Dr. Oswald Smith's patient files on Jackalyn Chase. "Chase is a rather interesting case. Although she has undergone an experience so harrowing that it would send many to the sanitarium, not to mention rumors of her vicious revenge against ISIS, she appears only minorly damaged by the incident. She is rather introverted, but good-humored and social when she feels comfortable. Part of her psychological resilience may come from two integral parts of her personality and history: her parents' acceptance of her sexuality despite their religion, and her fierce, intense loyalty to those she considers family. This may be the reason why she took such horrifying revenge against the terrorists."

CONCLUSION: Jackalyn Chase is not only suitable, but recommended for the United Nations Peacekeepers Program.

I play pretty fast and loose with encumbrance; just don't go carrying a ton worth of things with a d4 Strength, and I won't really have a problem with it. Basically, just try to keep your carried gear at a believable level and we won't have any problems. I will probably be keeping track of ammo, though. While the games don't have your units keep track of ammo, I think it will add another dynamic to the game. That said, you can of course carry a fair number of spare magazines.

I have created a character Alisha Quinn. She's a Military Sharpshooter who is of American/Canadian heritage and holds Dual-Citizenship. Currently she works for the Canadian military though so falls under their preview.

@Alisha: Only problem I see right now is your Parry should be 5, not 3; it's 2+1/2 your Fighting die. Other than that, I think you might be missing an advance? After that, you just need equipment.

Alright, here are Jackalyn's stats. I assumed that each weapon came with a clip of ammo appropriate for it, so I included that in Equipment. You already have her dossier.

@Jackalyn: Only issue I see is also your Parry; unless I'm missing something, it should be a 6 with the Bayonet, not a 7. Also, your sheet reminded me of something: the few house rules I use for SW.

  • Climbing d4+ is required for the Assassin Edge
  • Thrown weapons use Fighting, not Throwing
  • Tracking and Survival are rolled together

  • Thanks for the catch, Jon!

Where am I short in terms of purchases?

I bought the attractive edge and some 2 skill boosts with my advances. I took a hinderance of "Heroic" to get myself a +1 to my stats. I have 18 skill points which is 2 more points than the 16 I started with.

We will eventually have "Gene Mods" available correct?

Each of your Minor Hindrances give you something as well, which would account either for your edge or your skills being higher. That would leave you with one advance left to use, on whatever you wish. Also, like I mentioned, unless I'm missing where it would be, I don't see any equipment.

EDIT: Yes, genetic modifications will be a thing eventually, as will cybernetics and psionics. For the moment, however, this isn't the case.

I don't know anything about Savage Worlds, but I love XCOM. I'll see if I can get my hands on the rules!

    *glares at you*
    *dots angrily*
I promised myself I wasn't going to apply for any more campaigns, but then you had to go and dangle X-COM in front of my face.
    You heartless monster.

Alright, my medic is mostly ready. Backstory is open to a little change, but the basics are solid.

Quick question about the character creation rules. Does "half fighting", or "half vigor" refer to half the number of times you've upgraded it, or half the die value?

    Half the die value.

I'll have a character up this afternoon after I return from work. Looking forward to this!

Dotting in as I'm quite interested as you know Jon. I was originally gonna roll up a scout sniper type, but it seems Jackalyn has that covered, so maybe a heavy gunner?

I mean, my name isn't "Jon, The Super Nice DM", you know. It says evil there for a reason.

Here is my submission, I will create an alias upon acceptance..

    Harland Davis:

    Name: Harland Davis
    Race: Human
    Attributes: Agility d6, Smarts d6, Spirit d6, Strength d8, Vigor d8
    Skills: Driving d4, Fighting d8, Intimidation d4, Knowledge: Foreign Intelligence d6, Lockpicking d4, Notice d4+2, Shooting d8, Stealth d4, Survival d6+1, Swimming d4, Throwing d4
    Pace: 6, Parry: 6, Toughness: 6, Charisma: 0
    Gear: Unarmed Strike d8 (Str), Colt 1911 d8 (2d6+1, 12/24/48), H&K MP5 d8 (2d6, 12/24/48), Survival Knife d8 (Str+d4), Kevlar Vest (+2), Backpack, (50x) Bullets (Medium), Camouflage Fatigues, Cellular Phone, Lighter
    Special Abilities:
•Code of Honor: Honor is key; Keeps word, won't abuse/kill prisoners, etc.
•Enemy (Ex-Team Member): Someone is out to kill you
•Loyal: Will never leave a man behind
    •Alertness: Very perceptive; +2 Notice
Personal Details: Harland Davis was a military man through and through. He grew up in a traditional Marine family and when it was is turn, he qualified for MARSOC and became a member of a Force Recon Team. His unit's exploits got him an invitation to Tier 1 Operations and eventually a direct invite from the director of NCS to join the CIA SAD. He reveled in his duties at first, but one mission sent him sideways and he decided he couldn't stomach some of what they were having him do. One of his teammates, seeing an opportunity for promotion, ratted Harland out for not completing an assignment and he was summarily dismissed and put up RED. He tried to make a living in the civilian world, but it never suited him. Contacting some old friends, he decided to become part of a PMC and sold his services to them for a couple of years. His current assignment is in Basra with the UN Peacekeepers. He recently found out however that his old teammates are trying to recruit him back into the fold...

EDIT: Just read the part where Tracking and Survival are the same...

One other thing.. the Throwing is Fighting rule. Does that mean all throwing weapons or just knives, axes, spears? If it's all, I will have to change that skill too.

Throwing and Fighting are entirely the same, so things like grenades are also thrown using Fighting. I do this because Throwing usually seems an extraneous skill to me; most people with training in combat are proficient in how to throw things as well, so combining them seems the obvious choice.

Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't look like you used your advances? Your hindrance points seem to have gone into your attributes and skills (although I think you're missing whatever you spent one of those on, unless my math is wrong), which means you have two Advances to use. Personally, I might taking Agility d8 at start, and increasing Vigor to d8 with an advance; you'll get more mileage out of your skill points that way. Also, given your skill set, you might eventually get more mileage out of a d8 in Smarts than in Strength. Your call, but I figured I'd throw in my two cents.

Used to play a lot of XCOM back in the day. If you've got room, I would be motivated to post daily.

@N N 959: Recruitment is still open, so feel free to submit a character! Also, I don't think I ever mentioned how many people I was taking on. As is usual for me, I will be selecting SIX players for this game. I'm not sure when I will close this recruitment, but I will give at least a 24-hour notice (likely 48 or more). As long as you've posted in expressing interest before then, you have 24 hours (barring any extreme circumstances) to finish your character, and then I will make selections.

    Dark Archive

Damn, if only I had SW.

    Dotting!!!!!

Very very interested. I've recently been introduced to Savage Worlds and its awesome. I was running a Fallout based game here on the forums, but I'm gonna mark it inactive and start up a Rippers based game.

Argh. Well, that's something to watch for. Rippers is f*cking awesome. Count on a character from me when that hits.

Loup Blanc here with my submission. He's mechanically finished, I'm working on backstory for now. Short version is that while ethnically Romanian, his family moved to France when he was young and he's served with the French Foreign Legion in the Middle East during Operation Enduring Freedom. More recently he's volunteered to work as a member of the U.N. Peacekeeping Force, since he's both a good soldier and can speak the language and talk to people easily.

Okay.. made a couple of changes based on your suggestions. It does work out a little better with Skill point economy. My Advances I used were to get two skill points to fighting and shooting and then a boost to agility. My hindrance points I used to get two more attribute boosts. I want him to be well rounded but have some specialty skills. Normally an Operator like him would be at least Seasoned, but his age and stint with civilian life took a bit of his edge off...

    Gear: Unarmed Strike d8 (Str), Colt 1911 d8 (2d6+1, 12/24/48), H&K MP5 d8 (2d6, 12/24/48), Survival Knife d8 (Str+d4), Kevlar Vest (+2), Backpack, (50x) Bullets (Medium), Camouflage Fatigues, Cellular Phone, Lighter

So, just gonna take a quick tab of people interested and who submitted characters:

  • Jackalyn Chase (The Doomkitten)
  • Alisha Quinn (Darkfire142)
  • Rosa Vasquez (kamenhero25)
  • Harland Davis (Shadow Bloodmoon)
  • Gavril Vasilescu (Loup Blanc)
  • Borax Bohan (N N 959)

I'm still waiting on characters from:

  • EmissaryoftheNorth
  • Newbonomicon
  • ElegantlyWasted
  • Nenkota Moon
  • GM Niles

For those with characters built and still building, I will again stress that I'm looking for squad cohesion, and so at least partially building for characters that fill similar roles to the XCOM games as of late (Assault/Ranger, Heavy/Grenadier, Marksman/Sniper, or Support/Specialist) will certainly help your chances of being selected. Having a definitive "squad leader" is something the group can decide on later if need be, but at least partially filling those roles will lend you towards being more likely to be picked. I also won't pick more than ~2 people for any given role, so the squad will not have, for instance, 4 snipers.

Other than that, I think I will be closing recruitment on THURSDAY, APRIL 28th at 11:59 PM. If you've posted in before than point, you'll have 24 hours to finish/make any changes to your characters before I make my decision.

  • Here is my character.

I'm working on a backstory, but for now I'm going with a member of the Forsvarets Spesialkommando (Norwegian Special Forces) on loan tp the UN. Kristophe is going to apply for the "Grenadier/Heavy" role, but he's got a broad set of talents so he can fill in wherever. I intentionally chose a bunch of skills at d4 rather than specializing, so at least Kris can make rolls for things. Also, I took Knowledge:Special Tactics and European Geography to represent his time in training with the FSK.

Kristophe, I might actually recommend specializing more in skills rather than having them so spread out. Keep in mind you can always roll for everything, just untrained skills is s d4-2. Also, a lot of skills are only used when "under stress" like Driving, Piloting, Boating, etc. Just attempting to climb a building, even in combat, won't prompt a roll unless you're actually being shot at. Same thing with other skills like that; landing a helicopter in a combat zone only matters if you're being actively attacked by flying enemies, or if some of the aliens are trying to ram your vehicle off the road. Other than that, though, I think your character looks good. Let me know when you get a backstory up and moving, though.

    Arrrrh, this sounds amazing^^
I will look for the book this evening after work. If I can lay my hands on them I will likely post a character.

Basic idea would be a german "Gebirgsjäger" recon/sniper character who was sent on the UN mission as a try to re-establish Germany as a competent partner in military operations (after decades of a policy of cuts and resulting failures and inabilities).

EDIT: Some thoughts about the Specialists of the games are popping up in my mind: In the XCOM2 game they do most of their work with their drones, as I don't know about the system yet, how would this work? Something like an animal companion in Pathfinder, so doing tests such that the drone is doing what it should? And what "powers" would drones have (remote hacking, spying, actual fighting, ...)?

Drones aren't really a system in Savage Worlds? I'd have to devise custom rules for them, but if you're interested in such I think I'll definitely build them. Off the top of my head, I'd say they would be carried equipment that you could perform certain skills with at range, and you'd need to make Pilot checks to fly it around in hostile conditions. I'll look around in some companion books and see if I can find anything, but otherwise that's what I'm looking at doing for Specialists.

I stole whole cloth from Doomkitten because I thought it was pretty cool how she did it in Dossier form.

    Dossier:Kristophe Kristophson:

    FULL NAME: Kristophe Olveig Kristophson
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Norwegian Forsvarets Spesialkommando (FSK) formerly Telemark Battalion Helicopter Pilot.
    RANK: Løytnant (Lieutenant)
    HEIGHT: 198 centimetres (6’6)
    WEIGHT: 111.13KG (245LB)
HAIR: Blond, Irregularly Cut. (Much too long for normal military operations)
    EYES: Blue
OTHER FACIAL FEATURES: Irregularly cropped facial hair
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Unofficial Telemark Battalion tattoo on upper arm (Punisher Comic book logo of skull)
    AGE: 28
    SEXUALITY: Unknown
    RELIGION: Pagan
PRE-SERVICE HISTORY: Kristophe Kristophson was born to Lise Kristophson and Marius Kristophson on Decemberr 1st, 1991 at 1:13 (Central European Time) in Oslo Universitetssykehus Bygg (Oslo University Hospital) . Kristophson was an unremarkable student who showed aptitude early on for physical activity including greco-roman wrestling and track & field events. He excelled in sports as a high school student and enrolled in the Norwegian School of Sports Science, Defence Institute (NIH/F) where he earned a degree in Sociology. He has two marks of note in his PIF from his time at the NIH/F, the first is a Letter of Reprimand for a drunken brawl he participated in, the second is a Letter of Recommendation from the Vice Chancellor of the Sociology Department. Kristophe’s work on the sociological need for personal self defense and its relation to the warrior ethos was highly regarded and even published in Sosiologisk tidsskrift (Norweigian Journal of Sociology).
SERVICE RECORD: After his time at the NIH/F Kristophson was commissioned in the Norwegian Air Forces and sent to Pilot School at the Flight Academy located at Bardufoss Air Base. Kristophe excelled as a pilot although he was noted as being “too large for the pilot seat”. His large frame was just barely in limits to qualify him as a pilot. He graduated with full honors in March 2013 and Second Lieutenant Kristophson was assigned as a Helicopter Pilot with the Telemark Mechanized Battalion (TMBN). Kristophson was sent to Afghanistan in November of 2014 as part of the NATO effort to train Kurdish Pershmerga forces fighting the Taliban. During a routine training mission Kristophson’s and another Bell 412SP Helicopter piloted by Fryggi Belac were shot down by RPG fire. Both crews were heavily injured, Kristophson led the defense of the crash site, personally saving four Telemark Battalion soldiers who were pinned down by enemy snipers. Kristopson was awarded the St. Olav’s Medal and the Wounded in Action Medal for his actions on Dec 19 2014. After his recovery Kristophson applied for entry to the Forsvarets Spesialkommando after being recommended by Major Rune Wenneberg commander of the Telemark Battalion.
Forsvarets Spesialkommando: Kristophson officially entered FSK training in July 2016. He excelled in training by all accounts and was selected for the Trainee Leadership Cadre. Following his training he participated in several training missions on the North Sea and two deployments to Afghanistan. The Norwegian Military keeps excellent records of its activities, but information on Kristophson’s service in those deployments has been difficult to attain.
Personal Records: Kristophson is unmarried. This was seen as undesirable in the Forsvaret (Norwegian Military) and limited his advancement in the military. Kristophson has a positive personality and his commanding officers left remarks such as “morale builder” and “team player” in his PIF. However, further investigation finds that Kristophson has a penchant for drinking and fighting. This investigator found several instances of Kristophson participating in illegal fighting rings in Oslo, Amsterdam and Stockholm. Commanders should be aware of this and act accordingly.
CONCLUSION: Kristophe Kristophson is not only suitable, but recommended for the United Nations Peacekeepers Program.

Mhh I love to play snipers (especially in xcon as they are so nasty with squad sight and overwatch) but first: There is already a sniper/recon character in the recruitment and second: Hacking things and flying around with an armed drone also sound quite funny^^. Would you mind me dropping both as concepts, letting you decide which fits better?

All under the assumption that I am able to find a copy quickly ^^

Snipers also make the best mech troopers in Enemy Unleashed in my opinion.

This would be the sniper crunsh (in the alias). Will add background infos later today or tomorrow (and also will put aup a dossier, really like that form^^).
Let me know we're I messed up, as this is my first savage world character ever.

Short summery: 16 skills + 1 point from minor hindrance, 6 attribute points + 1 from major hindrance (fluff for that will come to make sense) +1 from advance, money 2000$ from second minor hindrance, edge from second advance.

Here is some backstory. Aiming for Ranger/Assault role.

    Lee Jenkins:
For many generations, Lee's family has been law enforcement. Since the days of sheriff's and cowboys, it has been their honor to uphold the laws of the wonderful country of The United States of America. And they have been in almost every area of law enforcement possible. Detective, Sheriff, forensics, undercover, military police, and even a few in the upper levels of the CIA and FBI. But they can't say much about what they do. Sure there have been a few that went against the tradition, but not Lee. He went to the same high school and college as his father, taking the same criminal justice courses as well. He even joined the same police force in their hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. He was fully prepared to spend the rest of his career there, eventually attaining a respectable rank like Deputy Director or Commissioner. Why not aim high?

But that changed when his partner convinced him to come watch the SWAT World Challenge. Lee had always been a gung-ho kind of officer. He'd never let a perp get away on foot. He practiced martial arts and used them to take down armed assailants on several occasions rather then shoot. He had excellent scores shooting and great physical fitness. SWAT was the perfect combination of all of these. A challenge he had to take. A challenge he jumped into with his usual determination.

As soon as he could he applied for the next SWAT exam and passed on the first try. The job wasn't like the SWAT World Challenge he saw or the movie that came out that year but it added a little extra spice to life he didn't know he missed. Every time the call came in to suit up, he was one of the first ready, heart racing, and blood pumping. He also managed to join Lexington's SWAT World Challenge team and finally got to compete in the event that changed his life.

Since then, their department's SWAT Team has consistently rose each year in the standings, finally eeking out Germany's prestigious GSG9. His skills were now world ranked. And that is how he eventually became part of the UN Peacekeepers. The the war in Iraq and growing tension in middle east, they realized they were going to need more peacekeepers with training in urban and squad based tactics. Lee was invited to participate in the selection process and managed to squeak in with all the heavy competition.

@Blood Angel: I usually do limit it to one character per player, sorry.

@Zayne Iwatani: Background looks fine, let me know when you get your stat block done.

Here comes the fluff of him. Btw this is Blood Angel if it was not obvious. Settled for the sniper for now. Maybe if this one is dead because of his slow speed I will try a specialist^^

    Weber::Dieter :: Dossier:

    FULL NAME: Dieter Weber
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: 47. Gebirgsjäger Company Germany, Sniping and Reconnaissance Special Task Force Instructor.
    RANK: Feldwebel (Sergeant)
    HEIGHT: 189 centimetres
    WEIGHT: 93.73KG
HAIR: Dark brown, short cut 5cm
    EYES: Green-Brown
OTHER FACIAL FEATURES: Full beard and long hair on prolonged active reconnaissance duties.
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: A badly scared and burned left limping leg, result of a suicide bomber ambush at his first active duty in Khatunyiah, Syria.
    AGE: 30
SEXUALITY: Married to Mareike Weber (30, active duty at the BND - equivalent of the CIA), 3 children between 6 and 9 years.
    RELIGION: Christian, evangelical
PRE-SERVICE HISTORY: Born at 09:35 MET, 11. September 1989 in Balingen, south-west Germany. Father a policeman, mother working as a forest warden he made early contacts with the woods of his mothers family and the rifles of his father. After a successful high school exam, he started a short study in general physics at the University of Stuttgart quitting in favor of a military career, after two semesters, because of the rising thread of ISIS.

SERVICE RECORD: After the first two months of his basic training at the "23. Leichte Infanterie", he was elected to partake a selection process of the 47. Gebirgsjäger because of his high intelligence, accuracy with long rifles and knowledge of woods and mountainsides. He got chosen and concluded the remainder of his two year time in the barracks near Obersalzberg, mostly with theory and body training as the budget of the military was vastly cut low back then.
After that he passed out of military service, for a three year assignment on the KSK (Special Police Devision, somewhat like SWAT) were he met his future wife on a joint operation with the BND. After the islamic attacks on Paris he reentered military service upon a call from his former Squad leader Major Boris Müller. A month later their squad was sent to Syria, in a secret joint operation together with two groups of the French foreign legion troopers, to root out an ISIS recruitment circle operating at the Syria-Iraq border zone. After two weeks of successful operation his squad followed the track of a group of ISIS fighters into the countryside and as they finally managed to locate their position in a small camp near the boarders of Iraq, they were ambushed by a suicide bomber - a previous informant of them - and all but Dieter got killed by the blast or caught. Dieter got caught badly by the blast, his left leg burned and peppered with shrapnel's and the blast throwing him into unconsciousness.
***It is currently unknown how Dieter left the place of the ambush.***
*To his own account:* He woke up in the wild, empty mountainside at the syria-Iraq-border and managed to survive for four weeks in these badlands, including a five hour sniper duel with an ISIS sniper and an attempt to scout the ISIS camp were his squad was hold as prisoners - but he was unable to get close without getting caught himself.
*Official Report Continued:* His ordeal ended after he managed to lay his hands on a full fuel cell. Calculating when the next satellite passage would be, he created a burning S.O.S. with the fuel in a dark and cold desert night. The heat signature was detected by an U.S. Satellite officer which resulted in his rescue. Thanks to his information's the foreign legionnaires were able to rescue most of his caught squad members and root out the ISIS camp.
After his rescue Weber went through a prolonged medical treatment and rehabilitation program for three years but his left leg could not be recovered to 100%, resulting in a slight limp. Nether the less he continued his military service, as an advisor for sniping, recon and survival tactics - the later got worldwide reputation and respect. As the war in Iraq intensified he got asked to become a peacekeeper by the German government because of his fighting experience (a rare quality inside the ranks of German military) and knowledge of the dangers of that country.
*** Analysts note: *** It is suspected that the German government tries to re-establish itself as a reliable military partner for its allies after decades of low budget politics and overexploiting its military material and personal which resulted in grave inabilities and losses.

    PERSONAL RECORDS:
His commanding officers always speak of him as a highly intelligent, calm and loyal person with a good sense of humor and good manners. He got best grades in all shooting disciplines - especially with scoped long rifles - and recon and stealth tactics. The ambush and his injury made him even more alert and cautious. It is notable that he learned the basics of Syriac and Arabic in the few months of active duty in the region.
He regained an astounding physical fitness although his injuries prevent him from being the marathon athlete he was before the ambush. Despite his injury he is still a good climber and good with traps and locks and his cautiousness and alertness makes him an excellent spotter and scout.

    CONCLUSION:
Despite his injuries Dieter Weber will make an excellent addition to the UN peacekeepers, his knowledge of the wilderness of the mountainside together with excellent sniping and stealth/recon abilities will be most valuable, although Commanders are advises to notice his comparable slow running speed and adjust for that.

So if I understand the rules right, we have 6 advances. 1 per minor hindrance and 2 for the major and 2 from xp? And those can be used to buy Edges or increases in die on skills or abilities.

Just letting you all know I'm still here. Blood Angel: The sniper crowd is actually getting pretty crowded. You might want to go with your specialist idea. Zayne: No, not at all. Minor hindrances grant either extra starting moolah or an extra skill point. Major hindrances grant two of the minor hindrance options, an edge, or a stat increase. Two minors can become one major as well.

@Jackalyn: Well that depends upon Jon I think as I posted my sniper already ...

I will allow you to change between options, it's just that I'm only going to consider one of them. If you'd rather switch to your Specialist, I am okay with this.

Zayne, that's not exactly how it works. As Jackalyn said, the boosts you gain from hindrances are not exactly "advances", but they do allow you to purchase additional things at character creation. You only have two actual advances from XP, which use the standard rules for advances. Hindrances allow you to gain additional skill points, increase your attributes, and purchase Edges like an advance, but have special rules you can find in the character creation section of the rulebook.

EDIT: Another note for people; if your character should realistically know multiple languages just by virtue of their upbringing, don't bother taking Linguist or Knowledges to know them. If you grew up in Spain you know Spanish and English, or if you were born in China you know Chinese and English. Now, if you want to know a language that you wouldn't know by virtue of culture or growing up (such as an American who's never left the states knowing Japanese and Swahili or something) then please take an Edge or skill for that. This also includes to a reasonable degree languages of neighboring countries; a British character may know a smattering of French and Spanish despite not living in a country where those languages are always spoken, by virtue of travel. Use your best judgment and common sense, if I don't like it I'll let you know and just ask you to change it, it won't impact your submission.

Also, a number of you have already done it, but a short physical description would also be nice if included. It won't make or break your submission, but if you get chosen and don't have one I will want one eventually. It doesn't have to be long or in depth; those people have used in their "dossiers" are fine.

I'm thinking maybe a Heavy/Gunner character, possibly a good candidate for becoming a MEC later on, but I'm a bit stuck in terms of actually writing a character.

Advanced Weapon Specialist David Nounen ready for inspections.
One for the team I guess, as nobody filed in a specialist, I will give it a try. So ignore Dieter Weber. Hopefully he will not suck in combat as INT-characters typically do...

Note on his know languages: that are the official languages of israel, with russian as semi-official as about 20% of the people are able to speak russian.
Note on his background: Its a bit sparse right now I know, but I'm not feeling well and its gotten late. Maybe I will be more creative after some rest...
