OPERATION DESERT SPEAR: 11:19 AM GMT, APRIL 6TH, 2019

- - - - - - - - - -

"Alright, we're about ten minutes out from Basra. Unfortunately, there's still no way to know who or what leveled this city; we have no idea whether or not the city might be occupied, or how many civilians might still be hunkered down." The staff sergeant takes a long drag off of a cigarette, wiping his forehead as the sweltering desert heat creeps up into the bed of the truck. "Just remember, our primary goal right now is to secure the area in order to care for any remaining civilians; setting up a perimeter is our first job. Any survivors can be brought to our base camp outside Basra until a relief effort gets rolling. After all, there's not much of a point in sending aide if there's, well..." The sergeant pauses, the end of his unspoken phrase hanging in the air.

"You and another section or two are heading into a block of neighborhoods on the eastern side of the city, along the river. Dig through the rubble, see what, and who, you might be able to find. Engage hostiles if you have to, but things are up in the air right now; do your best to avoid hostile contact." As the sergeant finishes speaking, the truck hits a bump in the road, equipment rattling as he takes another drag off his cigarette. "Any questions?"

This is smelly at best."

Jackalyn stares out of the copter, taking in the devastation. Holy hell... what happened here? She shivers despite the desert heat and begins septuple-checking her equipment. "I have the same questions as Jacob, sir. I would've thought Basra would be under tight security, considering the recent action in the Middle East. Did the satellites go down or something?" Her accent is very polite, upper-class British, and her voice, almost a whisper, can barely be heard.

The young soldier is obviously prepared for anything, with an overstuffed backpack slung over her shoulders, an incredibly powerful-looking .50 cal attached to the side, a tan camo kevlar vest that has obviously seen some action, and a pistol that looks like it has the kick of a mule holstered at her hip. Night-vision goggles are shoved up out of the way onto her forehead, which fits neatly under her short, crimson hair. Her piercing green eyes seem to take in everything around her. A light dusting of freckles underneath her eyes neatly accentuates them. She would be quite a beauty, if not for quite a few ugly, ropy scars, one that barely misses her left eye, and two on her left cheek.

Do we know each other? Included a full description for sake of completeness.

"Apparently, that's exactly what happened," the sergeant says to Jackalyn, before looking between her and Jacob. "We're not sure why, but we don't have any satellite imagery of what might have hit Basra. It all went down not long before the city was leveled, and the dust storm it kicked up hasn't helped us do much to figure out what might have happened. That's why we're going in on foot; dust has settled enough for us to get in and see what happened." He finishes his cigarette, flicking the butt out into the air from the side of the helicopter.

"As for witnesses, I can't say. We've heard scattered reports from outlying civilians, but nothing conclusive. We do know there definitely wasn't a mushroom cloud, though; Basra didn't get nuked. Wouldn't have seen increased radiation levels already, and we've got nothing. It could be some new, experimental tech? We're going in blind here, as f*cked as it is."

Hopefully we can get some answers quickly once we're on the streets."

Also, you all do know each other on a surface level, but not well. Unless any of you wish to know each other on a more personal level, I assume you simply know one another decently well because you're currently assigned together.

During the ride, Borax has been quiet. Like the others, he checks and rechecks his M16. Clearly of African descent, the American has a focused stare on the horizon. Borax does look exceptionally large or strong for his height, but the man does look fit.

"Shockwave."

The words are barely a whisper, as if the man were speaking to himself. Borax turns to the staff sergeant,

"When and where is our extraction? Who is in tactical command of the mission? "

I assume we have people on the team that speak Arabic and we all know who they are?

Depending on DM fiat I could at least make myself understood based on background. I can spend a rank on it or whatever, I'm unsure how can you get more languages in SW.

At the mention of a terrorist's bomb, or a cluster of them, doing this Jacob laughs "Sir, I don't mean no disrespect but thinking that terrorists can, or want to, blast a city like this is stupid. They want to terrorize, to achieve something... annihilating a city and leaving no survivors isn't their MO." he says while he chews on a snack bar he takes from his pocket "I mean, they can't use the city for any purpose after this, neither can they recruit more followers or scare their opposition. And then there's the fact that to do this you'd need a f!%+ton of punch, and a bunch of bearded yihadists usually have homemade bombs, mines and commie rockets not Bunker Busters or Neutron Bombs. That's grade-A american stuff, hard ta get and harder ta handle."

"Seems like sending a message just makes people hate them more often than not," Rosa comments. "A tragedy can easily turn into a rallying point if someone swings it the right way. "We'll be extracting on the city limits, where we'll be setting up a base of operations for the time being; we're landing along one of Basra's major roadways in an effort to make humanitarian aide more accessible to any refugees we might be able to rescue." The sergeant leans his head out the side of the helicopter, the city just barely visible through the still formidable cloud of dust. "When... that's not as simple. Coalition forces will likely take over soon if it turns out that terrorism is involved, but otherwise we may be here long-term. That's really more a question for Captain Levesque, especially once we've landed and figured out what the hell is going on."

"As for your group, Lieutenant Wingham will be leading your squadron, with Sergeant Jakes as his second-in-command. You'll be meeting up with him upon our landing, along with the other sections traveling with you."

Yes, Gavril speaks Arabic. In addition, members of other sections are either schooled in the language or indigenous to the Middle East, and speak it as well. Also, I misspoke earlier; the man you're speaking to is a Master Sergeant, not a Staff Sergeant.

"What's left of 'em anyway," says the sergeant as he looks out the side of the helicopter. He looks at Kristophe as he remarks about landing, nodding his head. "Time to land is right; we're hitting the outskirts of the city now. Some other troops are already on scene, set up a base camp in a patch of ruins near the edge of the city, and it's well underway." As the master sergeant speaks, you feel the helicopter beneath you start to sink towards the earth, lightly touching down on the whipping sands. The blades start to slow as you pile out of the chopper, with the sergeant pointing you towards a man shouting orders to the men and women already on the ground. "That's Lieutenant Wingham, he'll be leading you all farther into the city. I'd suggest you go speak with him. I'll see you all before we head out." With that, the master sergeant peels off into the crowd.

He's the best at what he does, but what he does isn't very nice?

"I'd venture a guess he's right; we haven't heard so much as a shot fired from the first team that ventured out into the city. That's the only thing that bothers me, though... if this was a terrorist attack, they're being awfully quiet about it." The lieutenant looks between all of you, clearly mulling that thought over in his head. "Still, good instincts soldier." He motions for you all to follow him, heading into a tent towards the back of the base camp. Inside is a large map of Basra, with a few changes already denoted in red marker; mostly collapsed buildings blocking off streets, as well as the location of the camp.

"You lot will be coming with me, heading along the eastern side of the city while we sweep for survivors. Moreover, we're mapping the remains of the city for easier traversal. As you can see, our first team has radioed back some insurmountable areas. Assuming we find survivors, we escort them back here and get them any emergency care they need while we wait for humanitarian aid. If we encounter any hostiles, we engage only so far as to secure our position. If they're out there, it's a sure bet they have a better idea of how to traverse the ruins than we do, and we don't need to be lured into a trap. We leave as soon as we're able. Understood?"

Jackalyn: While destroying the city isn't unusual, as far as you're aware there haven't been any terrorist groups claiming responsibility for the attack, which is unusual. Also, as the lieutenant has said, it's odd that they either haven't engaged the first party to leave or are otherwise not present in the city. This, coupled with the fact that securing this kind of firepower would be difficult, makes terrorists seem unlikely to you.

Borax: While structures are still standing, the camp is slightly out of the city in an attempt to stave off that issue. However, the state of the city is rather horrible; most of the buildings you can see from this distance appear to be leveled. While in the air you could see some surviving structures farther into the city, which were likely better constructed. That's on me, not you. In another scenario, that action makes a lot more sense; I forgot to describe just how damaged the city is in relation to where you are.

Jacob nods "Let's find out. Ready, sir."

House Rules:

Kristophe: You are heading farther into the city, where there are still standing buildings that do presumably still have doors. Also, given your significant ability at close-quarters engagement, it may be more beneficial to you to keep the shotgun. However, if you would like to switch I will allow it.

As the party responds in the affirmative, the corporal returns to the tent, gear now distributed. The lieutenant nods, and then waves you all out of the tent. "Well then, there's no time like the present. Let's get moving, see if we can't gather some idea of what the hell happened out there." A number of men and women fall in behind you, following you and the lieutenant out of camp and towards the destroyed city of Basra.

-----

"Alright, from here on out we don't know what we're going to find. Keep your eyes peeled, and watch your six." Much of the outer city is destroyed, the construction being less secure than the larger buildings towards the center. As you head farther into the ruins, it becomes clear this couldn't have been the work of any sort of conventional weaponry; the absence of radiation rules out any sort of nuclear weapon, and the destruction is too widespread to be anything else. Others of your group spray paint on the sides of buildings and light flares as Borax suggested, leaving a trail back to the camp. On a few occasions you encounter insurmountable obstacles; either buildings that have fallen into the street or large craters along your path. Still, as you continue on you feel an uneasy sense of dread; the city is completely quiet, and as far as you can tell devoid of any kind of life.

Notice:
As you walk through the city, you notice one of the first side streets that actually appears to be relatively intact. A few of the buildings off on that road are still standing in relatively good condition, possibly housing civilians in need of assistance.

Notice; Raise:
It appears as though someone has run down this side street pretty recently, but the footprints look a little small to be a person. The shifting sand kicked up by the storms has obscured them somewhat, but they could have belonged to a child or some sort of animal.

Notice; 2 Raises:
While the footprints are the right size, they look a little... off. Not quite the right size or shape for any animal you could think of you'd expect to see; or, for that matter, for a human child.

Roll Notice, please. For those of you newer to the system, the Target Number on these checks is 4; every four above the Target Number scores a raise. Almost all checks have a Target Number of 4, the primary exception being Fighting rolls, which are resisted by your opponent's Parry.
