Bethune 'woke' from his state of inactivity and rose to his feet swiftly. After a quick stretch to shake the rigor of rest from his extremities, the android went about busying himself with double-checking his equipment for any oddities or discrepancies that might have occurred since he was last active.

Seemingly satisfied with the inspection of his equipment, he followed it up with a similar inspection of his wards, exchanging niceties with each along the way. " How was your rest?" ... "Good Morning!" ... "How are you feeling?"... He went on.

Once the group was up and ready to move, Bethune shouldered his pack and cradled his heavy crossbow in his arms." Be safe up there." He addressed the forward scouts Sarasanna and Dakkar, taking a few seperate moments to place a hand on each of their shoulders and look them in the eye, respectively.

As they prepared their mobilization, Bethune did his best to remain observant.

So I guess no one discovered the long lost cave paintings showing a giant metal object falling from the sky, with tribes of homo habilis worshipping it; valued at millions of gold pieces to the first party to discover them. Pity.

It takes you nearly an hour of traversing at half speed, but you come upon another chamber. This chamber measures out to about 35'x35' at its widest point. What you can see, almost in a circle following the wall, are stone statues, each of a different looking crusader, bearing arms and wearing plate. Each face has the appearance of sadness, as if in longing. The passage looks like it continues in the southeast corner.

Perception checks again, please.

Male Drow Noble Accountant 12/Monk 10

Perception (all):
What you see coming down from the ceiling are two masses, both looking like dark octopi, (with 8 tentacles each); the tentacles seem to be connected via thin, web-like strands.

Knowledge check (Dakkar):
You recognize these creatures, or at least have heard of them. They are called Darkmantles. They are considered to be 'Small magical beasts,' in that their length from tentacle to tentacle is roughly 5.' Their preferred method of hunting is to drop down from the roof or ceiling (they are naturally subterranian creatures) onto their prey. If this doesn't work, they tend to fly back up to the ceiling to try again. Their cloak-like skin makes it easy for them to camouflage themselves in caves.

Round 1 Combat

Enemy Combatants

  • 'Creature 1' (Only Dakkar knows what they are at this point): Init 25, -0 hp, 10' in front of Dakkar (and 5' above his head)

  • Dakkar: Init 21, -0 hp, position as above, 5' from Sarasanna
  • Sarasanna: Init 14, -0 hp (I am assuming that you rested before the greyfang conference, so you would have gained back 1 hp from that, if you are off by more, then let me know), position as above.

Non-Combatants (this round)

was the ceiling only 5' overhead, did they hover in the "surprise" round, did they get surprise on us? Anyone with reach weapon should have been able to get an AoO? Are they flying or falling?

Hey now, no lunch here!

Dakkar swings wildly with his staff as he steps to the side.

staff: 1d20 ⇒ 6

5' step and miss on attack.

Male Drow Noble Accountant 12/Monk 10

No, the ceiling is actually closer to 20' high. The initial position is them falling in the 'surprise' round, and no, no one was surprised by the creatures antics...:( As to your last question, it's a little of both. Since the first one missed you, it is likely to fly back up to the ceiling and try again.

Finally, because, in large part because of the dynamics of '3d' combat, technically they just dropped into your space, and did not actually fly through, at least not yet. You'll get an AoO next round when it tries to fly back up, but even that (from all that I've read over the years) is because of a house rule, since it is not technically moving through another square; it's just going straight back up.

Since I am 65'-70' away from the enemy, Akkramar double moves to meet up with his companions. Actually, can I charge? If so, moving 60' + reach weapon, maybe I can attack someone one of the wretches? ;)

Charge with bardiche if I can: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17

Sorry, I wasn't sure if we were up to go, since we'd been listed as noncombatants for the round.

No, non-coms can become combatants in a heartbeat. To be honest, I haven't heard from Sarasanna in this round, and she is right on top of things. We can just say that you ran up to the creature and took a swing (and connected, btw; you hit Creature 2).

yeah I was thinking us non-combatants were surprised or something similar. Furthermore, I apologize for the short notice but I'm en route to a music festival, and as a result will be in a field until Sunday and unable to post. Bethune will move up his 30 feet and take a shot at creature 1. I'll return after this weekend!

'Creature 1' (before it dies) attempts to fly back up to the ceiling. Akkramar attempts to swat it down (as an AoO), but misses. Lucifer's attack is also an AoO, killing the creature before it can escape.

Lucifer and Akkramar, you may both take your standard action as an attack on creature 2, if you wish.
