"This letter," Giosue said with disdain, "Is in the tongue of disorder. But its information may be turned against its authors. It reads:

The Letter wrote:

Faxon,

You did well to report your superior's mishandling of funds, and I trust that you will continue to serve as loyally in the weeks to come. You need not command the Kenabres Templars for long, for the city is about to die--I only wish I could be there to take part in its murder, for I have fond memories of my Red Morning Massacre. No matter, I suppose, for your mortal kin will all fall soon enough--as I said, Kenabres' days are short. Vorlesh has already left to meet with our Lord's daughter in the Abyss to secure a Nahyndrian crystal of the proper purity, and once she has whats eh needs she'll arrive in Kanebres to finish the job and turn the wardstone fully to our use. You will know when she succeeds, I suspect! Praise Lord Baphomet!
Minagho

that seems to be the plan

That would be a yes, then.

The armigers ride out from the tower, deafened, bloodied, weary, but victorious. They have struck a blow against the demons plaguing Kenabres, and should take some satisfaction in this slight triumph. They have cast down one of his servants and learned the depth of the corruption festering in the heart of Mendev's defenses.

This is as it should be. They are Hellknights, and their training and discipline have foretold this outcome long before the armigers stepped foot beyond their respective citadels. Of course they would be victorious this day. Order always triumphs over chaos.

The streets of Kenabres buckle and heave beneath the horses' hooves as the armigers return to Fort Nebarius. Dark, ominous clouds of locusts buzz overhead, forming leering demonic forms in the sky. In the distance, fighting still rages. the armigers' blood boils, and they itch to join the fray, but, still, they hold to their training and press on back to report to Captain Tirablade.

The fort stands hale and strong as the armigers return, and they are ushered past the sweeping gates to make their reports.

"The Tower of Estrod has been cleansed. Faxon will scheme no more, slain by Kevroth's blades. However the news is grim, the corruption far more spread than suspected. Minagho was directing Faxon's efforts here in Kenebras while Vorlesh seeks some artifact from the depths of the Abyss itself. You must summon the scholars. Our best weapon against this chaos will be knowledge of their plans and their weapons. We must be ready for what happens next, whatever it may be."

D'hara bowed and turned to walk away. She had performed her mission as instructed and assumed her duty complete, at least until given new orders. She paused momentarily as Captain Tirablade began to speak.

Tirablade tapes her chin as she listens to what D'hara's report. This is troubling news. Very troubling. To think that the corruption had spread so far... We knew about it, yes. Or, at least, we suspected. This place, so close to the Worldwound, so exposed. It was bound to be infected with the agents of chaos. Vermin will always find a way into the healthiest of gardens. Only with constant vigilance and a strong desire to remove EVERY pest, can one hope to keep the yard free. Kenabres has not been vigilant. Oh, sure, the Queen has kept a watchful eye on the demonic legions in the wastes beyond Mendev, but she has focused too much of her attention outside, she has neglected the heart of her country. And, it has gone to rot. The Hellknights came too late. We were not accepted here until recently, and even then we have not been trusted, or included in discussions. Perhaps if we had...

She shakes her head with a wave of her hand. No matter. The past is done. We can seek answers, but it will not change the present. We are here now, and I shall set the inquisitors to these people. We shall hear confessions, and suss truth from cowardice ere the night is out. We shall root out this cancerous plague from this city.

There's a slight knock at the door, and a bark from the commander to enter. Quietly, a slight, unassuming man enters the room. He is wiry, not frail, like so many other scholars. No, this man is made hard, corded muscle. A small, iron-gray goatee frames his chin beneath round spectacles perched precariously on a sharp nose. He nods to Tirablade, one equal acknowledging another. You have need of me. It is not a question. Eligor the Sage has never questioned another person in his life.

Eligor, thank you for answering my call so quickly. I know your studies are of the direst of importance to our Cause. But, it is those studies I have need of, now.

Now, I am curious, Commander. What need have you of converting savage orcs to our purpose? Unless, you feel a bit...

No. Tirablade's eyes darken for a moment, but her anger passes. These armigers spoke of a weapon that the Enemy wishes to use against us... a Nahyndrian Crystal. Eligor's eyes widen, and he gasps. You've heard of these?

They.. they are myth. A whisper of a legend, if that. They are said to be the fragments of a murdered demon lord's life force. Perhaps, the FIRST murdered demon lord. They are said to be incredibly powerful, capable of impossible, nay, horrific acts of corruption. That these lowly servants of the Demon Lords even have knowledge of them... He pauses a moment, lost in thought. The wardstone...

Tirablade nods, but says nothing.

Eligor gathers himself and turns to the assembled armigers. As ludicrous as this sounds, this attack on Kenabres has been little more than prelude and subterfuge. No, destroying the Kite, slaying Terendelev, even this horde that over-ran the citadel. All of it was but a ruse... a gambit to mask their true intention: the wardstone itself. When the Storm King destroyed the wardstone, it shattered, taking the ward with it. But, it didn't fail.. not completely, it still lingers. I believe a fragment of the Wardstone still stands, with enough power within to still remain connected to the ward.

If that letter is true, and we have no reason to believe otherwise, Areelu Vorlesh proves it. That witch would only leave the safety of the Worldwound if she was assured of victory. Tirablade scowls, her voice is a dark growl of cold rage. She must believe there is something powerful, here. Something she needs. This fragment could be that.

Precisely my thought as well, Commander. She must believe she has the means to use the Wardstone to her own twisted purpose. Perhaps she really does have one of these Nahyndrian Crystals. Whatever her intent, it cannot be allowed to happen. You MUST stop them, before she arrives and can use the Crystal.

Tirablade turns to the armigers. We have located the headquarters of the horde's presence in Kenabres as the ruins of the Gray Garrison, deep within Old Kenabres. No doubt, this is where they are keeping the wardstone fragment, it was not amongst the ruins of the Kite. You will go there, slay all who stop you, and destroy the warstone at any cost. Nothing else matters, armigers. Destroy the wardstone before it can be twisted to our Enemy's purpose. I will communicate with the rest of the defenders throughout the citadel to launch a full scale attack. They will be a distraction, your distraction. YOU are the true mission. We will draw as much of their attention as we can, and you will end the wardstone and their hold on Kenabres. You have one day to prepare and then you must go.

Kevroth's eyes widen slightly at the mention of destroying the wardstone, and once she finishes speaking he raises his voice over the sounds of increased activity in the room, "Commander, how does one destroy the wardstone? It is an artifact of immense power, and no spell of which I am aware will so much as cause it to flicker."

Tirablade looks to Eligor, commanding him to speak.

you will use this Eligor pulls out a rod of blackest, purest night. It is a void in space, an emptiness that still yet has form and substance. In a more civilized era, it was called a Confectrix. Now, they call it a Rod of Cancellation. It will destroy the magic binding the wardstones together. The outcome shall be ... spectacular. I do not anticipate much of the building to remain dtandingbadter. The implication is clear.

Tirablade nods resolutely and turns back to Hellstrider and the other armigers. athey will do their duty. They are Hellknights. She stands strong and cold as Eligor hands over the black rod. Go. Heal. prepare. Tomorrow shall be our gambit for the fate of this world

And, today's not much better. ugh.. i'm 0 for 2 this week. updates tomorrow.

That night, a chirugen visits Giosue. Her face is kind, grandmotherly. She has crows feet in her eyes, and her eyes sparkle with joy. Hers is the face of someone who takes joy in simply living. He mouth moves as she intones a prayer to the Godclaw. Closing her eyes to the heavens, she cups Giosue's ears. They are soft and warm to the touch, soothing. They begin to heat up, painfully so. It's as if she has wrapped his ears in burning iron bands and poured lead into them. He tries to scream and thrash, but her hands are firm, her prayer grows more and more insistent, until. In the name of the Five Towers of Law, I command this curse be broken! He can hear!

There! That should do it!. She smiles again, giving a small, satisfied sigh she pulls her hands away, dusting them off. Her eyes sparkling even more. Now, you best be to bed, dearie, you have a big day tomorrow. The chirugen departs Giosue, humming a quiet nursery rhyme.

Night passes, and the armigers make their preparations for their assault on the Gray Garrison. At dawn, after their morning rations, they ride. Each is a figure of resolute strength and iron discipline. They do not waver, they do not falter. Their gaze is sure, confident, their steps determined. They know they will very likely die, every one of them. How could one hope to survive the destruction of an artifact? But, destroying the Wardstone will save lives... all life. What are the lives of a handful of armigers in the balance of the world? They have trained for this moment, this sacrifice. The Hellknights are the defenders of law and order in a world frought with chaos, this moment was decoded the instant they began training.

The cobbles scream foul obscenities with each hoof-fall, and the crackles and sparks as though it were aflame! About them ride an entire legion of Hellknights, only a token force remained behind to defend Nebarious. At the head of the legion, rides Tirablade herself, grim an inspiring in her black plate and fire-snorting stallion. The legions rides, drawing closer to the cancerous bastion of the demonic hordes. Soon, others join their force: Eagle Knights in their plate of burnished silver and colorful pinions, their horses decorated as though for a tourney; the remains of the city guards, hollow-eyed and grim; even the scholars from the Blackwing, and other places of learning sit horse (albeit, poorly) beside the legion. Each march towards the heart of chaos within the citadel! A groan issues from a corpse nearby and it slowly stands, falling in step with the legion. A scholar shrugs, brushing onyx dust from her fingertips as she pulls out another stone with a sheepish grin. The other scholars nod and many follow suit, soon the dead, too, march beside the Hellknights.

Closer they draw and reality rebels. The cobbles turn to air, the air to fire, water becomes earth, and fire becomes water. The world screams in agony. Its source can be seen in the distance: an ever-growing horde of demons and the deranged. Some are simply slaves.. too afraid or too weak to fight back. No matter. They all shall suffer the same fate.

Tirablade pulls to a halt, her blade held high. The legions stop behind her, and the demons wait. All is held in abatement, as though unsure or unwilling to press forward, to bring to conclusion this assault on Kenabres. For, no matter the outcome of today, a conclusion shall be drawn. The demons shall either be driven back into the worldwound, or they shall triumph and civilization shall fall. She brings her blade down, and the legions charge. The Eagle Knights break off to the right, the guards and undead to the left. The Hellknights have the main. The horde rushes to meet them. Arrows fly from behind, felling fighters on both sides of the line as Tirablade turns to the armigers. Go. Now! Run!

The armigers rush, darting about pockets of conflict, exploding buildings, and things that should not be. They flow past a torrent of demons into a disturbing calm. The gray garrison stands before them in the center of a ruined plaza. The Cathedral of Saint Clydwell once stood before this squat gray structure, but it is no more--nothing remains but a towering mound of rubble and a deep, jagged rift in the ground. It's impossible to think that the armigers stood here but days before, fighting for their freedom as the world collapsed around them. The ground is still littered with the remains of revelry: flowers flutter across the cobbles, and banners still hang from stakes in the ground.

All is silent as the armigers approach. The din of the battle, a distance boom behind them. They stop, taking measure of the garrison, and six shapes melt from the stones of the building and the plaza. Four bloated humans brandish screaming swords as they tear themselves free from the stones. Two gaunt ash-gray goblin-shaped creatures join them, their eyes gaping pits filled with swarms of maggots. Each of the demons scream in rage!

As Tireblade dispatched them, D'hara slipped a potion vial out of her bandolier and popped the top off of it. She quickly drank the contents feeling the almost tangible field of force surround her body as the mage armor shimmered into existence.

As they stood in front of the fallen cathedral, the sounds of battle slowly fading away, she could not help but feel a little excitement as the future drew nearer. For a brief moment, the world stood still. That is until the bloated bodies stood up.

A small grin spread across her face, hidden beneath her scarf as her legs carried her forward. The sounds of her footsteps should have echoed across the stones as she ran but her feet fell so softly that barely any sound was made.

Skidding to a halt in the middle of the intersection, her eyes darted around taking in the scene. Somehow her chain had freed itself as she moved and now found itself resting firmly in her hands, waiting to strike out at the first demon to come forward.

"Well what are you waiting for? Come now, it's time to return home" D'hara called out to the demons slowly encroaching on her position.

Far to the rear, Giouse lightly places a hand on Hellstrider's shoulder. "Ut ferrum exuit viribus implere infernum." Molten iron, burning a dull red beneath the dark gray sheen, pours from his mouth in a river that quickly spreads to cover the chakat's arms and legs. It seeps into her fur and bones, and her muscles burst with power and strength.

Two of the vermleks begin to talk in a foul, twisting language. It is without true logic, or even grammar, more an expression of ideas than anything. But, nevertheless,it still conveys meaning. They extend their hand southward and a pile of maggots begins to form between D'hara and the others. Two others close ranks and flank the monk to either side. Although they show an uncharacteristic display of tactics, such strategy is clearly only accidental, as D'hara easily dodges even their most pressing attacks with ease.

Abominations! Iavdi lowers his glaive at the demons. You violate the laws of Gods and Man! The hell-forged charges the demon to the left of D'hara to make room for Hellstrider's own charge. When the warpriest of the First touches the wand to his arms, iron-gray chains wrap around his arms, strengthening his limbs. He feels the resolute and determined power of the Nine Hells fill him with power and sure aim! As his allies charge into battle, Kevroth advances along the left side until he comes in range of one of the squat goblinoid demons, cutting at the creature. His kukri spins and cuts through the air, laying open the eyeless fiend's gullet. Eyes spill out of the wound, spilling across the plaza before erupting into clouds of flies that quickly fly into the air.

The chain coils about the demon's leg. It shreds human flesh, revealing the moist worm-gray flesh beneath and tearing it as well. Vermin fall out and eat at the wound, making it grow. Chaos feeds on itself.

Across from the monk, Iavdi swings his glaive, cutting at the demon. The creature ducks the blow, but leaves itself open to the attacks of the hellforged's mighty stallion. Igneous pummels the fiend, ruining even more of its human covering.

One of the blinded vermleks opens up his hands, a wave of shadows circles out from its palms, washing over D'hara, Hellstrider, and Iavdi. The black shadows rip maggots from the armigers' flesh that fall to the plaza floor and crawl into the demon's wounds, knitting them together. Then, with a wriggling giggle, it slides over to flank D'hara with the demon beside Hellstrider.

The demon, though, has other plans. Instead of attacking D'hara, it turns to the greater prey. As Hellstrider feels her flesh wriggle away from her body, the demon beside her bends down and thrusts up with its sword, cutting a deep gash into her flank, spilling more of her blood upon the stones in a treacherous move of cowardice! The other two strike out with both magic and blade, but their lack of training and discipline defeats them.

Then, she lowers her lance and charges, trying to bull past the worm-fiends. but, they are too tightly packed together and she stops short lest she runs herself through on their lowered swords.

The eyeless demon laughs. It is a sick, deranged sound, filled with madness and manic glee. It pulls and twists and Iavdi's machinery, setting the precision of his gears and wires awry. Debilitating Injury:
At 4th level, whenever a rogue deals sneak attack damage to a foe, she can also debilitate the target of her attack, causing it to take a penalty for 1 round (this is in addition to any penalty caused by a rogue talent or other special ability). The rogue can choose to apply any one of the following penalties when the damage is dealt.

Bewildered: The target becomes bewildered, taking a –2 penalty to AC. The target takes an additional –2 penalty to AC against all attacks made by the rogue.

These penalties do not stack with themselves, but additional attacks that deal sneak attack damage extend the duration by 1 round. A creature cannot suffer from more than one penalty from this ability at a time. If a new penalty is applied, the old penalty immediately ends. Any form of healing applied to a target suffering from one of these penalties also removes the penalty.

Kevroth moves around the eyeless fiend, trying to duck out the way of its strikes as he moves. The eyeless follows Kevroth, turning its head as the warpriest of the First walks with resolute purpose around it. The maggots in its eyes lash out, trying to grab and bite at the blessed warrior, but the Prince of Law guides His servant's steps, and the champion of order remains untouched by the heretical whims of fickle chaos! Once he is behind the creature, flanking it with Iavdi, he slashes at the fiend again. His cut is quick and sure, tempered by the measured discipline of a Hellknight. Toads covered in the raven feathers of crows spill from the wound, hopping about the flagstones before consuming each other until one is left to explode in a shower of noxious green gas. The fiend howls in pain and curses at Kevroth, as it frantically tries to close its gaping wound.

It is a ploy that Iavdi uses well as he strikes at the vermlek between D'hara and Hellstrider.
