I figured he was around 6'

On the subject of Blackerly, I admit to a certain metagame desire to leave him alive.

Think about it: a scar-branded disgraced prison guard with a chip on his shoulder would make a really cool recurring antagonist.

Female Half-elf Bard 1/Unchained Rogue 3 HP: 20/20 AC 14/10/14: F+2, R +9, W+6 (+2 vs. Enchantments), Per:+18, Init: +10

If they don't just kill him.

They can't. They're the good guys.

OK, so I'm thinking we do a little two-level scouting.

Cain and Price mount the wall at the tower near 3b. Sneak across the wall in the dark using their low-light / darkvision, and do a quick listen at Level 2 of the Gatehouse and possibly peek through the arrow slits - just to see if any guards are there.

Meanwhile Gwyn, Xanos, and Jakes listen at the ground-level door to 3b to see if they can spot any guards there.

Cain and Price can drop a rope and rappel down if we need to join up for an assault.

Works for me. If they're down by us I'm a fan of the knock on the door/daze/ogre to the face method of doing things.

I second this line of thought.

Out of curiosity, does Blackerly have any rings on his hands?

Sounds good to me!

As for the height question... cool. All of you have in mind what I have in mind, too. THough apparently when I wrote him up I had him shorter than that.

I'll just adjust him to "a few inches over 6 feet", since that's what everyone thinks anyway. :P

This question peaked my curiousity. I'll say sure, nothing of any real value but he does indeed wear a small ring.

Xanos, what are your build plans?

Straight wizard all the way, focusing on raising my DCs and having a truly horrible number of minions.

I have some seriously cool plans, and they start with Blackerly...

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

OK, so we have an empty Level 2, possible guards on Level 3, and/or guards in 3b or 3c.

How do you guys feel about scouting separately?

Gwyn, Xanos, Kalina, and Grumblejack could pop the door on 3b. If there is a guard, you could thump him with the patented Daze & Ogre pound method. Whether there is a guard to kill or not, you could sneak a peek (via the arrow slits) into 3a... just to make sure no one is in there.

At the same time Cain and Price could move into Level 2 - which would seal off the escape routes from 3a, 3b, and 3c. We could do a little recon and hopefully figure out where the guards are located.

Thoughts? Better alternatives?

Just caught up. Wow, this group is a gaming group I would love to be a part of.

Just out of curiosity, are any of you going to be at Paizocon?

Regardless, game on, my friends.

@ Price: I say we go ahead and at least do a bit more separate scouting. The ability to pin them in may well be worth it. We'll might want to see if we can get eyes on the roof before we open the door to level 2, though... climb up to peek through the crenelations? I'll put a post up in the game thread about it.

@ Everyone else: I say the rest of you go ahead and enter (which seems to be Xanos's plan anyway). If you do it quietly, we'll possibly all get into a position to get more information. If you get heard, you might provide a distraction to get Price/Cain into a flanking position (assuming we can find the guards).

@ Gary: Hey, I'll take that as a compliment (though I'm hard-pressed to think Cain is the most interesting character in this group of assorted awesomeness). If you weren't the creator of the game, I'd say you should hop in as we're down a front-liner.

And I'm not going to Paizocon... I don't even know when it is.

King of Talingarde

I hope I'm doing your AP justice, Gary! Can't wait to bring 'em to Act II (my favorite part of the first book, [i]the DM begins laughing maniacllay).

And I'm afraid I wont' be at Paizocon either. I generally can only take enough time off work at one go for one event, and we usually do Gencon (which I may end up missing this year if I get my promotion at work, darn you job!).

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

Sadly, I probably won't be at Paizocon. We're pulling up stakes in Seattle, so I'm not sure if I'll be kicking around the PacNW or living on the East Coast when the Con begins. If we are still in Seattle - I might hit it.

Thanks for the props, Gary. Just out of curiosity... what about our game is appealing to you? The characters? Our approach to the whole mission? Our fashion sense?

@ Mark - congrats on the potential promotion!

Female Half-elf Bard 1/Unchained Rogue 3 HP: 20/20 AC 14/10/14: F+2, R +9, W+6 (+2 vs. Enchantments), Per:+18, Init: +10

@ Gary: Wrong end of the country for me I'm afraid. I live in Central Alabama. But thank you for the compliment. I don't consider my self that great of a player, so it's really nice to hear something like that.

Yah, i've said it before, and it's worth saying again. I am really pleasantly surprised by the quality of players in here, guys. And once again, Xzaral has done a really good job of running the thing.

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

I agree. I'm liking the mature and thoughtful handling of evil characters here. Frequently, I've seen evil PCs played as two dimensional, cardboard-cutout villains ('moustache-twirlers'). It's nice to see that everyone is bringing depth to their characters and playing evil in a way that is every bit as nuanced as we'd play good characters.

@ Gwyn - not that you need anyone's approval but I think you are doing a great job. I'm having a good time watching you skate the line between girlish insecurity, glee, and ruthless killer. :)

MAP

So, initial idea here since the drunken dwarf and friends are not rushing up the ladder at us...

GJ stays below as our door-guard/security.

The rest of the team gathers above the trap-door to 3c. On the (hopefully) Surprise Round - Xanos uses his action to pull open the door. The rest of us (Cain, Jakes, Price, and Gwyn - possibly in that order) use our actions to swarm down the stairs and spread among the guards, hopefully creating flanks - particularly for Gwyn so she can do the mayhem that she does best.

The dicey part comes with the initiative rolls - but we won't be flat-footed and we will hopefully be able to get AoOs on any guards trying to get up, blow horns, etc.

Xanos, from the top of the ladder, can Daze victims selectively to soften up our foes.

Thoughts? Better plan? Anything I'm overlooking?

I like this plan :)

Remember that GJ has reach, meaning that it's likely that he can just reach an arm down the ladder, grab a guard and drag him up the hole in the ceiling like a horror movie.

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

Reach out and touch someone, eh? :)

I'm good with this if we can figure out a way to get GJ up to Level 2. If he has to climb up the wall or go through the Tower... I won't complain if he arrives a little late to the party.

King of Talingarde

@Price, thanks! I get scheduled for the interview today or tomorrow (looks like tomorrow at this point), then have two more interviews after that (they can be waved, but not always). It would mean relocating from Iowa to Texas (when my brother is about to move back from Texas to Iowa in a couple months, go figure), but I think it'll be worth it.

As far as the plan, Grumblejack could fit but it would be squeezing rules, so it would take time. Not the best option during combat but you could get him there. Though that depends on how log the guards are going to be down below. Just waiting for a response from Gwyn and I'll move you all forward with this plan.

Female Half-elf Bard 1/Unchained Rogue 3 HP: 20/20 AC 14/10/14: F+2, R +9, W+6 (+2 vs. Enchantments), Per:+18, Init: +10

Have GJ bust through the front door with Xanos and Jakes for support then have the rest of us come down from above, but this should work too, even if Gwyn is squirming the whole time from being so close to Grumbles.

EDIT: Nevermind my idea ain't going to work.

Out of curiosity, Xzaral. If you get the gig, where in Texas will you be headed? I'm in the North Dallas area.

King of Talingarde

Waco, Texas. It could've been Dallas (we just recently opened a center there) but I didn't apply for that one in time.

I'm having a little trouble picturing what's going on. Here's my understanding, please correct any mistakes.

There are 3 levels to the tower.

Myself, Gwyn, Jakes and GJ are on the ground floor entering from the courtyard. It's empty.

Price and Cain are on the 2nd floor. They entered from the wall. It's also empty.

The guards are on the third floor (roof of the tower), accessible by a ladder/trapdoor.

Is that right?

King of Talingarde

That is not correct. The ground floor consist of three chambers. You are in the westernmost chamber, entering from the ground level. A ladder in the ground level comes up to the 2nd floor, which is one large room. A ladder in the floor goes down to the easternmost room on the ground floor. This is where the guards are currently. Two ladders in the ceiling go up to the roof, which is the third floor. Got it?

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

Nope. You guys are in 3b which is isolated from 3a and 3c. The guards are in 3c. The only way to get into 3c is from the ceiling trapdoor on level 2 (where Cain and Price are).

EDIT - Ninja'd again!

Female Half-elf Bard 1/Unchained Rogue 3 HP: 20/20 AC 14/10/14: F+2, R +9, W+6 (+2 vs. Enchantments), Per:+18, Init: +10

Nope they are on the ground in 3c.

MAP

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

So what you are going to do is go up the ladder from 3b to Level 2, and then walk East to stand with us on the trapdoor above 3c.

HP 27/35, Temp HP 0, 3 str damage, AC: 11, Fort +02/ Ref +2 / Will +6, Perception:+5 Channel 8/8, Bolster 8/8, Infernal Healing 50/50, Command Undead 50/50. Active Effects: Fox's Cunning

Wow, I was all kinds of wrong. I thought we were going up one tower in the gatehouse. I didn't realize we were clearing all three sections.

Thanks.

Are we supposed to be using Jakes on this assault? Don't wanna abuse Xzaral's generosity in letting her stick around, but it seems odd that she'd hang out upstairs with the action going on down in the first floor.

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

I was figuring Mark would control her as a NPC and was waiting until all the PC actions were finished.

King of Talingarde

That is correct.

Cool.

Did Cain get an AoO against the dwarf for the dwarf standing up in the glaive's threatened reach?

King of Talingarde

Oh yea, Glaive. Yes indeed good sir.

Glaive'em, Cain!

Does "glaive'em" translate roughly to "fan'em real good"?

Cause Cain's got that down!

Yah, Cain's got power. Just need to work on his control, now.

Yea, I'm a huge fan of wizards. In the various game I play in, out of my characters I currently have a Conjuration (teleportation) specialist, a Divination (Foretelling) specialist, a Transmutation specialist, and an Enchantment (Manipulator) specialist. And those are just the active ones at present.

I'm pretty sure the courtyard is going to be full of fire and probably falling chunks of burning masonry. Xanos isn't going to mention that though.

Hope your boy doesn't die.
