The southern door to the west leads to what appears to be a sparsely populated office, it's furnishings consisting of a desk with numerous papers scattered across the top of it and two chairs. Another door leads further west as well as one door leading to the north.
Bostarg - 39
Morthos - 16 (added two from Bostarg)
Beatrix - 14
Haruk - 13
Alazandaru - 20
King Markadian V |
A piece of paper appears to be a scheculde for the guards with where they are stationed. A simple examination shows the prison currently stations 23 guards (besides Blackerly and the Warden), with 6 any given day stationed off of the prison itself. The guard posts and routes are all clearly marked on the map as follows:
•Two outside Cells
•two at doorway to cell block
•Two outside keep entrance
•Two patrol the walls
•Three at gatehouse
•Three at bridge gatehouse
•Three off duty
There's ample proof that Blackerly has been skimming from the prison payroll, and for quite some time.
Bostarg Halvardonwine |
Bostarg moves immediately for the papers on the desk...
Perception: take 10 for 14
...finding the guard's schedule and passing it on to Alazandaru.
Intelligence check: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
But finding little else within the words and reams worthy of a review. He then moves to the West and North doors - trying each in order.

Bea takes a look at the papers with Alazandaru, and bursts out laughing after a moment. "Bah! So much for the law and order of these guards. Balckerly's been stealing from the prison. Skimming off the top of the wages, looks like. Why that two-faced hypocrite..." She takes another look at the papers and continues, "Still, there's enough information here to get a pretty good idea of where the rest of the guards are."
Alazandaru Viorec |
Alazandaru nodded gravely as his new allies looked over the papers in detail. Seeing that they had things there well in hand, he used his new tools to try and open the locked northern door.
Search the bedroom carefully while i'm busy here he called over his shoulder.
Take 10 on Disable Device to begin with, for round 1. If that isn't sufficient, he'll spend two more rounds working on the lock.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
If a 26 doesn't cover it, he will remove his chain shirt and Take 20 on the lock, giving him a total of 30 and taking a total of three minutes for the entire process (previous time included).
King Markadian V |
The door to the north opens. Inside appears to be a storeroom. Supplies for the prison are stored here.
- 200 torches
- ten lanterns
- two 10 gallon kegs of lantern oil
- six spare guard uniforms
- a dozen signal horns
- twenty 50’
lengths of rope - two barrels labeled ‘emergency rations’
- A special rack holds 9 brands with the runic F you all now bear
Alazandaru Viorec |
His eyes ablaze, Alazandaru takes one of the brands.
Might the symbol of our exile become a symbol for independence? he idly wondered, his quick mind already idly planning greater plans against Talingarde.
He also takes a lantern, a signal horn and a length of rope, as well as several torches.

Bea takes a look into the storeroom. "Excellent - this should help our survival outside of the prison. As many rations as we can carry." She grabs a lantern and a length of rope, then looks longingly at the kegs. "Don't suppose anyone saw any smaller vessels anywhere in here for oil? No way we're carrying those without a cart - though if we decided we wanted to torch the place that'd do the trick." She pauses as if considering while looking around the room. "Ya know, for a room this size there's not much in here. I'd wager Balckerly's skimping on supplies too to pad his pockets."
Morthos "the Malevolent" |
"Soooo, Blackerly's been stealing from his own. It's a wonder the pathetic king's rule hasn't collapsed within itself already."
Heal: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Int: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Morthos observes the rations then looks to Beatrix, "Do not eat the rations, Madam Beatrix. They have become quite rotten. Unless of course you'd just rather." Morthos then helps himself to a bullseye lantern, a signal horn, one of the brands, 1 50' length of rope.
After he gathers the items, he moves into the bedroom and looks through the wardrobe and everywhere else to see if there is anything of interest.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Do I have time to take 20? Which would be 20.
King Markadian V |
You can choose to take 20 if you like, but you cannot be certain of all risks associated (hehehe).
Based on the 7 perception roll. Considering the sparse furnishings of the room, it does take much to identify two items in this chamber. One is the large lockbox underneath Blackerly's bed. The other is the bottle of Rotgut he keeps in his wardrobe (in addition to two seargent's uniforms and a traveling outfit.
Morthos "the Malevolent" |
Morthos eyes the sergeant's uniforms thinking of how proper he would appear in such attire. Those could come in handy. Will have to mention it to the others. Heading over to the bed, he retrieves the lockbox from underneath and attempts to open it.
Morthos "the Malevolent" |
Realizing he's unable to open it, he drags it out and lifts it on to the bed. Returning to the others, "Alazandaru, seeing how you are quite handy with locked items, I have located a lockbox within this room that is... well... locked. And locked quite well, I might add. Your expertise is needed." He shows him to the lockbox.
Is this a big or small lockbox?
Alazandaru Viorec |
Alazandaru nodded, going to work.
This might take some time- feel free to search the rooms as carefully as you like he advised, removing his chain shirt and painstakingly probing the lock for its weaknesses as he began.
Take 20 for 30.
King Markadian V |
Alazandaru goes to work on the difficult lock. After about 2 minutes of probing, the box finally comes open. Inside the lockbox you find a small fortune. 1854 gold pieces and a dozen bottles of rotgut worth 5gp a bottle.
You believe you heard the sound of a metal scraping against the wall coming from the hallway.

Morthos "the Malevolent" |
Morthos looks to Bostarg, "Interesting idea, Bostarg."
Morthos then quickly turns his head toward the noise, narrowing his eyes. Drawing his sword and shield, "Let's welcome it then, shall we?" He whispers back as he readies for the intruder.
Bostarg Halvardonwine |
As the others ready themselves, Bostarg moves to stand in the doorway leading to the sergeant's quarters. Slumping against the doorframe so as to help hide his height he also clutches at his side as though injured.
Bostarg is going to attempt to Bluff them into entering the room to assist him assuming that they come this way.
King Markadian V |
I've set up the map roughly according to what was happening. Feel free to adjust accordingly. The guards will be coming around the corner on their action, so ready accordingly if you so choose.

Round 1:
Bostarg delays for now, waiting for the guards to come around the corner. When he sees one, he let's fly with the readied action below.
Settling into his chosen role, Bostarg allows the guards to see him and one beat to notice his uniform before he groans loudly and drops to the floor clutching at his side. Mewling pitiously "Help.. the prisoners... urggh" Hoping that the charade will draw the men within to assist... where they might more easily be handled.

Morthos "the Malevolent" |
Seeing the others prepare, Morthos moves in line of sight in hopes they see him. "They will see me, they will come for me, and they will perish in their futile attempt to restrain us." He states as a matter of fact.
Moved token as well.
Seargent Blackerly |
From around the corner come a small force of guards, led from behind by Sergeant Blackerly himself. "A Prisoner out of his cell? Get him you mangy curs or this won't be the last you hear of it!" With that the guards charge ahead, careful to avoid Bostarg.
I've moved the guards in this far, where there will be AoOs from Alazandaru and Bostarg, if they choose to take them. Otherwise initiative is below (and the guards rolled like crap).

Bostarg declines taking the AoO, preferring to remain being seen as one of the guards for now.
Seeing the guards fall for the ruse, Bostarg enacts the second phase of his plan. Weaving the force of magic into his words, he orates with a heavy tinge of fear "No Sergeant! He has magic that will twist your mind and will against you!" allowing his skills to work before continuing in a lament "Oh no brothers, he has taken Blackerly for a puppet... he is among the enemy now. We must strike him down!"

Bah, denying me flanking and sneak attack eh Bostarg... Remind me to get someone more martially inclined to stand by the doors with me next time :P. Worth asking actually, are the guards considered flat-footed as they rush in and grant an AOO, considering Alazandaru might be mistaken for 'one of them' with his disguise check of 20?

Alazandaru buried his left hand dagger in the back of the neck of the first man to enter with a vicious, brutal thrust. Taking immediate advantage of the guard's surprise, he then gracefully span on his heel as he retracted the bloody knife and rammed his right hand dagger forcefully right through the next man's chain-mail, burying the blade deep in his chest. He did not linger for a counter-attack, swiftly moving to stand beside Morthos and meet the remainder of the guards.
Seargent Blackerly |
Gonna move things along, only waiting on Beatrix.
Five guards come charging into the room, Blackerly commanding them from behind. The first to enter falls under Alazandaru's dagger, dropping to the ground. As this happens, Bostarg's spell falls under Blackerly, the last guard in line rushing to stop him. "Sir, sir, fight off the evil!"
The second guard in line takes a viscious attack from Alazandaru but manages to pull through, though Haruk's icy ray finishes him before he makes it to Morthos. The third and fourth continue their advance, but the third falls underneath Morthos's assault, impaled.
Grumblejack moves in to try and bash the last guard to enter, but fails to connect. The guard strikes at Morthos, deflecting it form a lethal blow, but the strike appears to be true...
Unless Beatrix manages to take down the last guard, he'll connect with Morthos for 7 points of damage.

Nice timing, Beatrix. Was about to head to bed.
Beatrix manages to finish the last guard before he can sink his sword into Morthos. Blackerly's eyes go wide as he watches the four guards cut down before him. Unable to speak, he takes the only reasonable course of acton he can think of in his present state. He bolts. The last remaining guard is dumbfounded at Blackerly's actions. "Seargent, what's going on?" He calls after him.

"Well, we know that fool Blackerly is going to return with reinforcements. So I would suggest we finish up here quickly, and take our leave." Noticing the one guard standing there and not running, "What is wrong with that one? Is he the most fantastic fool ever? Why has he not run away?"
Haruk |
Haruk takes this chance to work his magic, with his silver tongue "Your sergeant has fled, your allies cut down. We have not a scratch on us, and you stand in our way. Will you die like the rest, or lay down your weapon and cease to impede our departure??" Not sure if I should roll Bluff or Diplomacy.
