Things always slow down around the holidays. No worries.
WormysQueue |
While composing my last post I found myself unsure about the use of the spoilers I included. The first to relate to the knowledge skill checks, Rianne and Kendren made, and while the included content is their personal knowledge, it will probably related to the rest of the group anyways which might create redundancies, when they actually have to do that every time.
The spoiler for Arianna is becuase she went to scout alone, but also doesn't contain anything that need to be a secret for the rest of the group.
So my question to you is how you would prefer me to use those spoilers. I know from experience that not every player wants to read things their character wouldn't know about at that time, on the other hand I also don't want to slow the game even more down by forcing you to repeat everything I put into spoilers for a specific character. So where should I draw the line, as far as you are concerned?
Iolaire |
IMO spoilers are good. If someone makes the roll etc all they have to do is say "look at the spoiler" and then its done - doesn't need to slow the game down much. My 'real' group use the term "Info dump" for exactly the same situation.
Kendren Nollt |
I'm actually waiting to see the results of my Diplomacy check with Aravashnial.
Iolaire |
I think the GM has gotten lost and is wandering around the dark tunnels beneath Kenabres! :)

Nah, sorry, my bad. Had some family issues going on which obviously messed my mind up a bit because I was honestly surprised to see that it has been nearly a week since my last post. If someone would have asked me, I would have sworn that it had been three days ago instead (which would equally be too slow, but not so slow).
Again , apologies for that, I'll do my best to return to a daily post rate.
Kendren Nollt |
No worries, GM. Family is important. We can be patient.

Not in front of the Chief, Uldir. We don't want to be rude.
WormysQueue |
I don't want to interrupt the situation between Iolaire and Uldir so I'm waiting 'til tomorrow for my next post. Apart from that, I've decided that I would like to let you level up as long as we are still in Neathholm as I don't like levelling up in the middle of a dungeon.
So, Level 2 it is for you all! :)
WormysQueue |
from the campaign info section:
Maximum hit points at first level, then you can choose between HD/2+1 or rolling the dice. Automatic re-roll, when you get 1 .
As you didn't see this, I'll let you chose if you want to take HD/2+1 instead of your roll, but generally, if you decide to roll in the future you have to go with the result (with the noted exception). I don't mind either way, but I really like rolling the dice so I added the option mainly for people who are like me in this respect.
Alfred Black |
1d10 ⇒ 10 I just can't resist rolling for anything.
Woo! Hoo!
My most popular house rule, that I've used since 1st edition is when rolling for HP you can roll (2) Dice and take the highest. Still leaves a chance to be real unlucky and roll two ones, but ups the odds that you'll get descent HP. I do the same thing with healing spells. It just sucks to me that you get a limited number of spells per day, and you blow them up with minimal healing. This second usage scales with the spell so for example Cure Serious is roll 4d8 and keep 3. Seems to be popular with my players, and has minimal effect on game balance.
Kendren Nollt |
Hmmm...as a d6 Hit Die, I think taking 1/2 HD+1 is the best choice, since that gives me 4. My Con modifier makes it 5 HP total.
Skills points at Level 2: 2 Class + 3 Int+1 Human+1 Favored Class Bonus+2 Background
Diplomacy +1
Knowledge (arcana) +1
Knowledge (dungeoneering) +1
Knowledge (history) +1 (background)
Knowledge (nature) +1
Knowledge (planes) +1
Linguistics +1 (background)
Spellcraft +1
Use Magic Device +1
I also discovered that, while I made my level 1 FCB a bonus skill point, I did not actually spend said skill point, which also went into Knowledge (nature).
Will Save +1
Base Attack bonus +1
No feats, no new class features. I increase my Arcane Reservoir maximum to 5 (although I do not automatically increase my current reservoir), and gain 2 new spells: magic missile and magic weapon.
Course, once I get a chance to study the crazy dwarf's spellbook, I might get to add a few more spells to mine. And maybe that scroll, depending on what it is.
Gain an additional 0-level spell memorized per day and an additional 1st level spell per day (although I can still only memorize 2).
Kendren Nollt |
Unrelated, once we have an opportunity to rest, Kendren will attempt to identify the magical properties of the morningstar and take a crack at that scroll again. He will also study the other spellbook, having prepared read magic. Shall I roll in Gameplay, or in this thread?
Uldir Forgeheart |
1/2+Con gives me 7hp so I'll go with that (same for Jyoldurkir, +7hp).
Just a note for Wormys: I had my feats written down wrong (the eidolon was supposed to have Power Attack, but I had that written in Uldir's non-fused section). So if you're looking at it later and wondering why the feats are different that's why :p
Iolaire |
HP: 1d10 ⇒ 6 Yay! Dice gives me exactly the same result as 1/2HD.

I'll keep it. I did roll it so it only seems fair to keep it even if it makes me the squishy member of the party. :-P.
Skill points were: Rogue (8)+ 2 (Int) + 1 (Favored Class)= 11
Acrobatics
Bluff
Diplomacy
Disable Device
Disguise
Escape Artist
Perception
Sense Motive
Sleight of Hand
Stealth
Swim
Each got +1 rank
HP: (8) + (2) = 10
Level 2 Rogue (Unchained): Evasion, Rogue Talent: Fast Stealth
Iolaire |
Thank god for level 2 and Lay on Hands!
HP - +10
Skills - 5, one more rank in Diplomacy, Heal, Craft, Perform and Knw Religion.
BAB +1
Fort/Will +1
Class - Divine Grace, Lay on Hands.

Kendren will happily take that assistance, Uldir. Means I can take 10 for a total of 20, if that's enough to identify each. If not, I'll roll.
WormysQueue |
My most popular house rule, that I've used since 1st edition is when rolling for HP you can roll (2) Dice and take the highest.
I like this house rule, so if this would encourage you to roll the dice, I'd steal it right away. I still don't want to force it on anyone so taking ½ HD +1 would still be an option.
Shall I roll in Gameplay, or in this thread?I don't mind either way, and if you don't want to play it out (which is ok, because it would be a bit repetitive in the future) you can roll in the discussion thread as well.
I didn't have time to do anything over the weekend and unluckily, I have another one of those long shifts tomorrow. So I won't be able to do anything before thursday (german time). I'm coming home in the morning (german time) and I'll make this my first entry on the to-do list. Including going over the loot thread to see if there's something missing.
WormysQueue |
Heh, I hope too. I did some editing and proofreading while still studying, and due to that I've become a bit sensitive about (german) orthography and grammar. And as we (doctors and nurses) basically have to document everything we do, there's a lot of chances to hurt my sensibilities (and they take those chances all the time :D)*.
*Not that I'm not prone to make my own mistakes, so I'm good at hurting myself too, sometimes ^^.
Kendren Nollt |
So, with Uldir's assistance, does taking 10 for total of 20 on my check to identify the morningstar and the scroll succeed?
Arianna Bienan |
Arianna would also look for a cold iron version of each of the party's weapons. Glaive for Iolaire, Warhammer for Uldir, Morningstar (I think) for Alfred, Crossbow bolts for Kendren and I'm not really sure what Rianne uses but a version of it for her too.
I'd like to trade the gem (200 gp value) for as many of them as possible including her own rapier (10 gp sell). For the CI rapier and their weapons if we have enough left over (or they just don't have them for those items) I might get the Composite Shortbow.
Kendren Nollt |
I'll pass on the crossbow bolts. I should be spellcasting as a primary choice, anyway.
I wouldn't say no to having enough gold to scribe shocking grasp into my spellbook, though >.>
Iolaire |
We can trade off a glaive (4), two spiked gauntlets (5) and whatever armour Uldir and Arianna had before the chain shirts as well as the gem. Cold Iron weapons cost twice base 16 for a glaive, 16 for a morningstar, 24 for a warhammer, 40 for a rapier.
So sell: 209 + ?
Buy: 94 (for all weapons named above), which would leave 115 + gp, is that enough for spell scribing?
Arianna Bienan |
Ari was in leather armor so that'll have a sell price of 5 gold. Uldir was in a chain shirt before hand so add another 50 gold to that which would total an additional 55 gold. We also have some other gear to sell/trade in (Also adding in a few items from my inventory cause I want to get up to that bow as well. Since I kinda need a better ranged weapon than a simple dagger) :
Regular backpack +1 GP
Set of caltrops: +.5 GP
Flint and Steel +2.5 GP
Silk Rope 50 ft +5 GP
Mirror +5 GP
which puts us up to 184 GP after the initial groups of weapons.
Transcribing spells into the spellbook, with the exception of free spells gained upon acquiring an additional level, costs (spell level)² x 10 gp per spell, presuming that the writer is using base materials such as a quill pen and black ink. Less expensive materials may be used assuming the wizard takes the appropriate feats and skills. Many of the materials described below significantly add to the cost. Each spell takes up one page per level, therefore ten 1st-level spells uses ten pages, six 2nd-level spells uses another twelve pages, etc. Clearly, a high level wizard maintains more than one spellbook.
So that spell would cost 10 gold.
So after that would leave 174 gold from the sell of the gem and loot if at all possible I'd like to donate a single gold coin from my starting equipment to get the composite shortbow which costs 175 gp. And then I'll buy arrows with another of my starting gold coins which would give me the 20 arrows with it. This is assuming no one has any objections or other input on the shortbow. I'm willing to put it off until later at which point I'll keep the silk rope and mirror
Uldir Forgeheart |
Uldir will also pass, he's got a masterwork weapon marked with Torag's symbol already.
Mark him down as Very interested in the Elemental Gem, earth elementals make phenomenal scouts & support (they can tremorsense from under the ground, then rise up in ambush once the fight has started. Perfect for grappling archers or mages)
