Did you need someone to move your token to that tree? Or did you mean you want to climb the tree with the live, pony-sized spider on it?
Yeah, that sounds like a bad idea. Nevermind.
Dominic tries to break Tawner free from the webs.

Not really having better options, the black maiden walks over to Tawner, edging to try and give distance between her and the spider and tries to assist to. Even the scary little rabbit joins in.

Just doing some economy-sized talking. Nothing to see here. Keep moving along.

Lydia gives the spider a good thump from afar.
With everyone's aid and a retroactive Str check by Dominic ;) Tawner is freed, just in time for the spider to creep down the tree a few feet and try to take bite out of him.
Maiden, Dom, Evil Mr. Bun Bun, had you used your Round 4 dice rolls for attack they would have missed anyhow. I suggest we just put that turn behind us. ;)

Tawner Kelenfold |
Fort Save class & alchemical potion: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
"Gah, SPIDER!" Tawner yells to let everyone know a spider just bit him. Pain rips into Tawner like he's coming apart. Only one person in his party knows he is largly untested in combat. But Tawner has felt pain before. The kind that left him for dead. He lifts his head and says in his most menacing voice, "That hurt, spider, that hurt."
If the spider just bit me without retreating AND if the group's help doesn't count as my move action, I will attempt to draw my weapon as a move and attack as standard. If not, then just ignore the next attack.

THEN Climb down: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
The World's Most Interesting GM |
If I can't do that as presented, my tactics are instead as follows
First, it looks like Lydia and Fomalhaut are trying to climb over the webbing (30 feet up) to get to the next tree to attack the spider there from above. If that's the plan Lydia misses the necessary climb check by 5 and falls 30 feet.
At the beginning of their turn, I have them both clinging to a knotted rope in the branches of the tree with the egg sack in it, 30 feet above the forest floor.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
I'm gonna go with Lydia's alternate actions (which I believe prohibits Formalhaut from moving far enough to attack the spider).
Lydia's next stone flies astray.

I should note that Tawner's attack from the round before hits.
While Dominic snaps his whip just in front of the spider's eight primitive eyes. Alas, he is standing too close to the arachnid when he does so. The spider takes the opportunity to lunge in under the whip to bite him.

Lydia Stillbourne |
I did say that if we went with my sling attack last round, that I'd climb down AFTER making it. Since this all would have been much more easily adjudicated in an in-person game, can we please say that I did that and, since he couldn't have done anything else, Fomalhaut followed, meaning we both start this round at the bottom (since both Climb rolls we made succeeded)?
The World's Most Interesting GM |
I got you both currently moving down the rope.
Lydia Stillbourne |
What does that mean, exactly? Can we make it down and attack this turn?
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Normally a climb check is made to move 1/4 your normal land speed as a move action. Lydia was 30 feet up at the beginning of her last turn. She used a move action to descend. At the start of her turn this round Lydia is about 23 feet above the ground She can try to move faster (half speed, but there's a -5 penalty), jump down, double move, or do something else entirely. Moving (climbing) and moving again at accelerated speed would get you to the ground this round.
Lydia Stillbourne |
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Frustrated with the fact that the spider is still standing, The black maiden carefully walks around and up to the sider to not provoke any attacks before attacking the thing with her sickle, though she keeps her shield up and wary.

*SLICE!*
The Black Maiden's sickle drops the spider to the ground, where is quickly folds up into itself dead.
End Combat
Black Maiden |
The black maiden slides her sickle back into it's strap and puts the shield on her back, holding her head.
I am staying on the ground for the foreseeable future...
She looks at the spider distastefully.
Sooooo.... anybody got a idea on how to harvest the glands from this thing?
Survival checks are not my forte.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
The PCs may also try to collect a silk gland from a spider corpse with a successful DC 15 Heal or Survival check. They may only attempt this check once for each corpse.
Lydia and Fomalhaut move back up the tree to harvest the fresh webbing from the egg sack.
Lydia Stillbourne |
"Seriously? None of you know how to do this?"
Do I need to make a check for that?
Tawner Kelenfold |
"Lydia! Did you see? I hit the spider!"
Tawner feels particularly pleased. "Good fighting, friends. Who's hurt?" Tawner asks as he collects his shield.
I was reminded by Black Maiden's post that when I dropped my shield, it reduced my AC to: AC 14, T 9, FF 14. I'll be sure to note that each time I drop it.
Tawner Kelenfold |
"Perhaps you're right, Dominic." Tawner examines Dominic's scratch.
"A night's rest and you'll be in fighting trim again." He raises his eyebrows. "That sound your whip makes. Well, it's the only sound that I remember from the battle! That is...unless you count Black Maiden's dirty looks." Tawner laughs at his own words.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Tawner,
Funny you should ask wrote:The PCs may also try to collect a silk gland from a spider corpse with a successful DC 15 Heal or Survival check. They may only attempt this check once for each corpse.Lydia and Fomalhaut move back up the tree to harvest the fresh webbing from the egg sack.
At the very least the cleric might remember to offer some guidance.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Only if you touch yourself.
Safe-ish, I promise. You can trust me. I'm on the internet. ;)
Black Maiden |
Heck Tawner, with guidance on yourself, you pretty much only fail on a crit fail, and you can probably take 10 to guarantee you can do it!
The black maiden turns one of those dirty looks on tawner, and a soft growl comes from the black rabbit. Almost sheepishly however, and speaking rather softly, she says.
I... seemed to have injured myself in the fall... I would appreciate some healing.
Tawner Kelenfold |
That's a good point, Black Maiden. Taking 10 with a +8 heal would get us what we need. We'd have to see if The World's Most Interesting DM agrees since we're not in any danger at the moment...or are we...?
Tawner's smile fades as Black Maiden turns her attention to him. There's also something unnerving about that rabbit.
I probably shouldn't ever let on that I've skinned rabbits before.
"Well," he says while fumbling in his backpack, "Hold still." Tawner produces a smooth, inelegant piece of wood, one of which looks purposeful. He points it at her, mumbles, and then asks her if it worked.
Wand of Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Black Maiden |
Black Maiden let's out a satisfied groan as the spell knits together the damage in her body.
Thank you.
The rabbit growls and the black maiden smiles. It's oddly unsettling.
Mara says you will be 6th to the last to die when he consumes the cosmos. I think he likes you.
You probably do not agree with the maidens assessment of the rabbit's intentions.
The World's Most Interesting GM |

Not at present.
Tawner Kelenfold |
In that case, I take 10 and Tawner harvests a silk gland from the spider corpse.
"gah...spider..." Tawner mutters to let everyone know how disgusted he is while pulling out a silk gland.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Having pulled the fresh webbing from the egg sack and extracted the silk gland from one of the spiders the group looks to their next move.
Currently, it is early-afternoon on the second day away from Daggermark.
The World's Most Interesting GM |
What did you want to do?
Tawner Kelenfold |
Tawner places the gland in his backpack. "What now? There was a mausoleum that Ulisha mentioned. And a bejeweled rod. Something else I think."
Tawner looks back and forth between the two bookworms, not even bothering to include Dominic in his gaze. "Um, who has the journal? Let's look."
Lydia Stillbourne |
Lydia quickly flips out the book.
"Well...Razmiran's not too far away, actually, and that's where the rod is. Scepter, technically. A place called Allenstead. Apparently they've been resisting Razmir but have finally given in...apparently because of it."
"Ustalav's not too far away, either. A necromancer's lantern hidden in some kind of enchanted 'Cannibal's Grove.' Sounds interesting."
The World's Most Interesting GM |
Remember also that you need to sell your spider silk and glands before they get too old.
Black Maiden |
Black Maiden thinks outloud.
We have to sell the spider silk and glands first. Let's head back, sell them, then go to Razmir. I think it might be nice to spend some time someplace civilized for a bit rather than "Cannibal's Grove".
Dominic Radzi |
Dominic pulls out the journal and flips through it. "It says she had a buyer named Johaness Vox. Maybe we can try him, though it says he's not been forthright." He closes the journal. "Perhaps another merchant would be better."
Tawner Kelenfold |
"Let's decide when we get there. It's early afternoon and we're still in the forest." Tawner looks at his blade. The scimitar has some scuff marking from his attack.
Useful
He smiles, though it may look to others that he is frowning at the blade. He doesn't care.
He shoulders his backpack and waits for the others.
