The sound of honest laughter bubbles up like fresh water from a spring in one tastefully dim corner of the tavern.

"And she said: Well he was presenting 'alternate facts.'" The the speaker’s dry, masculine delivery provoked another round of laugher from people seated around him.

It was growing late though, and at last the greater bulk of people got up and said their goodbyes. Leaving the interesting man, and a young halfling woman sitting at the large table alone.

The halfling had her elbows on the table, small fists buttressing her chin. Her legs, dangling kicked idly at the air beneath her chair.

"What's wrong Janira?" Asked the man smiling. His eyes crinkled at the corners with genuine affection. He was paying for his departed friends’ drinks with coins seemingly pulled from thin air, and the serving girl's ears. The serving girl giggled.

"I've got to head out in a couple of days for the Kortos Mounts. I'm supposed to be taking a bunch of Society initiates with me, to check up on that—" Janira stops and gives a quick look around. "...that activity I noted in my report a couple of months back. The Master of Scrolls, Dean Shaine, wants to use the trip as their Confirmation. I guess the Lodge is sort of desperate to push initiates into the ranks after all that trouble with their rose garden time-travel contraption, the flair up at the World Wound, and all the recent tangles with the Consortium. I'm not sure I want to be responsible for a bunch of novice treasure hunters who've never set foot out of the Lodge, but the dean mentioned he had a list of top notch agents just waiting to go."

"And this troubles you?" The man says in a tone that suggests he is a bottomless well of compassion.

"Well, you kind of have to know Master Shaine." Says the halfling.

This is a role-playing recruitment for 5-08 The Confirmation (i.e. you have to role-play to get in). So, no list, no lottery, no first come first served--at least not like usual. If you want in, you gotta talk to the man at the head of the table, the halfling sitting across from him, and maybe even each gulp! other first. This is a role-playing game after all. Once we have enough seats plus however many filled, I’ll pick the final crew (probably in about 48 hours). Characters will be chosen on a completely arbitrary, and unfair basis (personality, character concept, group role, legibility of character sheet, shameless bribery, etc…).

The Confirmation is a scenario for levels 1-2. It is "evergreen" for 1st level characters. A player can normally only ever have one 2nd level character receive credit for it per mode (Standard or CORE). We’re playing this one in the Standard mode for Pathfinder Society credit.

If you are unfamiliar with Pathfinder Society Play or Play by Post Click on the World's Most Interesting GM for some helpful links, and advice as compiled (read: stolen) from around the messageboards by other GMs.

Grand Lodge

A wispy sylph stands from a corner table. His form is insubstantial, seemingly more air than flesh. He approaches the halfling and the interesting man. "Hello, I couldn't help overhearing that you are assembling a group for their Confirmation." he looks away with discomfort, "I've only been training for a short time, but I believe I am ready. I want to help the society free Ranginori." he takes a breath. "I can't do that stuck in the Grand Lodge. Will you have me?"

He looks at them expectantly for a moment. "I have some skill with a healer's kit, and I know the languages of all the elemental planes. I can be of some use."

Silver Crusade

The tall man in the blue studded leather armor with the odd antennae on his helm smiles broadly as he looks around at the halfling and the Interesting fellow.

"Ho-ho! I believe this is where Master Shaine said to go, assuming that his command to take a flying leap off the Starstone was merely a strong suggestion! I am known as .... EL GARRAPATA! And I am a staunch defender of that most miss of Mistresses: JUSTICE! I am STRONG!" He strikes a pose showing off impressive muscles. "AND I am MIGHTY!" He accidentally breaks a ceramic mug. "And occasionally I am prey of that fickle fate known as accident!" He nods heartily, smiling like an idiot. "BUT most of all, I AM AT YOUR SERVICE!"

"Pathfinders!" Said a man to no one in particular. He was wearing simple breaches, a tunic, and a mantle that seemed out of place—richer in cloth. "Heh, you folks are all riding the sane wagon the wrong way."
For a moment, Tawner eyed the coins that appeared in the hands of man sitting across from the halfling. Presently, he returned to his tankard.
Tawner wondered how much coin the man at the table carried. Maybe he could play along and earn a coin or two.

I’ve never engaged in pbp and I’ve only been playing PF for a bit now. Would like to get my feet wet with a low level module and a helpful DM. I’m also willing to say “GM” if I have to!
Not sure what character to play, but I am willing to discuss what the group needs.

JTDIII, I'm not certain if you're aware this is a Pathfinder Society scenario. Which if you're not, welcome! You can learn more about it here. The main thing is you'll need a PFS number and you'll need to follow the character creation guidelines. If you need any help with those, just ask and we'll steer you right.

El Garrapata laughs. "Ha ha! The wagon of sanity is a strange construct, sir! The true path lies with the wagon of RIGHTEOUSNESS! And where there is righteousness, THERE IS NO SANITY!"

Liberty's Edge

A dark skinned man rises from his seat at the table. The dark green dyed robe with faded gold embroidery that he wears rustles quietly across the tavern's floor. Towering over most in the room the Bas'o man's shadow cast by the fireplace reaches Janira's table before he does. He bows his bald head in greeting to each of the people at the table.

"Please forgive my eavesdropping," he smiles cordially, "but I found it hard to not listen to this table." He spreads his hands, palms up. The gesture pulls the sleeves of his robes away from his wrists, which reveals old scars left from years of wearing manacles. His neck is similarly scarred, likely from wearing a collar for a long time.

"My name is Sidi, Sidi Yawgu, and I am a Pathfinder initiate. I am waiting for my Confirmation, and I heard what you said about your fears." He clasps his hands in front of himself. "I do not know if my name is on the Master of Scroll's list, but if you would consider me, I would be honored."

Sidi's smile fades to an unreadable expression. "I am no treasure hunter--novice or otherwise--the rewards I seek cannot be weighed on a scale. And I assure you, I have been quite, quite far outside the Lodge." He smiles at Janira once more.

His attention to the table breaks when the man in the blue armor begins to shout and smash ceramics. "Oh. Who let an elephant loose?"

Dark Archive

The young dwarf, immaculately dressed in robes of red with yellow trim, and a trident strapped to his back enters the room. His beard is well taken care of and he is well dressed. Asking for a water he sets him self down, arranging his holy symbol, which matches his weapon so that he can sit down comfortably. He pulls out a scroll and a quill and begins to write. He pauses listening to the conversation of other patrons.
The pathfinder society you say lads? he begins. I myself. Keandre Glasmiter, barister par excelante, of Cheliax am also a member. My faction, the Dark Archive has sent me here to learn more, aye, knowledge is a good thing., and to cooperate and all of the other parts of the credo of our esteemed society. taking a drink of his water. Looking at the halfling he makes the comment La Garrapata he says Chelish I believe for the tick, correct?

Liberty's Edge

A large, imposing woman covered in scars and totemic charms approaches. Aicadh's attention is drawn to the blue shouting man and she shakes her head. Such bizarre people in Absalom. She addresses the table in rough, accented Taldane. "I am Aicadh, from the north. Pathfinders are known as great adventurers and have many stories written of them. I shall have stories with my name, and return home with proof of many great deeds. Whole Following will choose me as leader then." Aicadh slams a hand on the table, knuckles tattooed with bear claws. "Confirmation is the first step, must pass initiation, yes? I will go, show my worth to the Ten."

I have previously played the Confirmation, just so you're aware.

Liberty's Edge

Sidi gives El Grarapata a polite, if strained, smile. "I find great strength in quiet and tranquility," states the Bas'o whose massive frame is clearly no stranger to the typical source of strength. "You might break fewer mugs if you channeled your power inward rather than outward."

He tries to wrangle a contemptuous expression under control when the dwarf introduces himself and his locale of origin. Fortunately, the entrance of a boisterous Kellid gives him a ready distraction. "Oh. Two elephants," he murmur as the corners of his mouth twitch upwards in private amusement.

I have played and run the Confirmation before.

Liberty's Edge

Aicadh looks to Sidi, with a rather serious expression. "A traveller told me that elephants never forgot. That is a good comparison, and would be good for a Pathfinder."

Liberty's Edge

"I'm not certain about that," Sidi replies to Aicadh, "but they can be a force to be reckoned with."

Dark Archive

The dwarf sits back and watches, taking mental notes.

Grand Lodge

Ilenna had been eavesdropping on the conversation between the halfling and the man from a dimly lit table along the side of the tavern. She sipped her honey mead, as she watched a few other patrons approach the pair. Getting to speak with these two is going to be more difficult than I would have thought.

After finishing her cup, she begins moving towards the halfling. The human woman steps into the light of the tavern. Little animal bones, leaves, and the furs of small game hang from her belt and leather armor. A green cloak hangs from her narrow shoulders. The edges of the cloak are worn on the fringes from scraping the ground due to her short stature. She has a spear made of some dark wood slung over her shoulder.

Excuse me! she says to the tall boastful man in blue as she attempts to move around him, nearly being knocked out by his flailing arms. Finally moving to the halfling's table she says, Janira, was it? I overheard you talking about going to the Cortos Mountains. I am just an initiate looking to make a name for myself in the Society and explore more of Golarion. However, I have plenty of skills to contribute to your mission. And what I lack, Nora more than makes up for. They wouldn't let her in... She rolls her eyes while gesturing to the door guard. ...something about this being no place for a tiger. She'd be far less disruptive than that large fellow in the blue. She says slightly raising her voice so the man could hear. A rogueish smile breaks across her face, as she glances at the man.

By the way, I am Ilenna. So sorry! She says abruptly, thrusting her hand out to formally greet the halfling.

I have not played this before, and it will be my first stride into PFS. I have played some PbP before

Dark Archive

Have played and DMed this but enjoy this module, each time can be so different

Liberty's Edge

"That is a shame. I would have liked to see your tiger," the Bas'o comments to the woman in the green cloak with a polite bow of his head.

Sovereign Court

A grey skinned half elf turns from his stool towards the table, brushes his dark hair behind his ears, leaving a silver lock free.

“Well met my good man!” he says, gesturing towards Sidi. “I also could not resist the lure of such conversation.”

Turning his attention to Janira, “My appologies for the interjection, lady Janira, I am Hallimir Duskrin, also a Pathfinder initiate. With regards to this activity you speak of…I am sure that the Master of Scrolls simply wishes to provide initiates with suitable opportunities for us to prove ourselves worth of the Society”

“Although I also have only been training for a short time, I am well versed in the diplomatic arts and I believe I can be of great assistance with public matters as well as those that require more” pausing slightly “‘subtle’ techniques. I would be a great honour to be chosen to serve with such an esteemed Pathfinder as yourself…if you will have me.”

Turning his attention towards Alryn and raising his glass [b] “In the mean time young sylph, let’s have a drink and we can discuss the elemental planes…..they have always interested me, and I wish to know more.”

I have some experience with PFS but this will be my first PbP campaign. Looking forward to really getting into the RP aspects that always seem to be lacking in a F2F game

Dark Archive

A slight young woman - well, she looks young in some ways, but it's almost like she's some kind of preserved fruit, simultaneously young and ancient - creeps into the bar, looking around as though every mundane little thing is utterly new and strange to her.

As she moves closer, the other striking thing about her becomes more noticeable: She's virtually colorless. She has a strangely attractive blue-and-lavender pox flecked sparsely across her face and arms, and the hearty brown color of her wooden corset shaped like a ribcage, but other than that, she's practically a charcoal drawing, nothing but shades of black, white, and grey - in fact, as she gets closer, it seems her very presence drains the color around her.

Then there's her shadow. It's much longer than it should be in this light.

"Ah...hello? My name's Lydia. Lydia Stillbourne. I heard this is where one joins the Pathfinder Society? I've worked with the Dark Archive for some time, but I'm ready for adventure!"

Perception DC 17:
From somewhere behind her comes a voice, hollow, but rich in sarcasm. "Oh, we're 'joiners' now, are we??? Forgive the observation, but the words 'party' and 'Lydia Stillbourne' make about as much sense together as the words 'Zarta' and 'nunnery.'"

"Not now!" She hisses back.

Veteran player, brand-new character!

Grand Lodge

Oh, Nora is just outside on the porch, probably asleep if I had to guess. You can meet her in a little bit, if you would like. She doesn't bite... unless I want her to. She says, flashing that rogueish smile again at the man who adressed her. Not really great with social cues, she awkwardly sticks her hand out to answer his curt bow and greet the man. Like I said, I am Ilenna. Come sit with us if you'd like. After this conversation we can go visit Nora.

Liberty's Edge

He smiles and nods at the half-elf before he takes Ilenna's hand in his warm, firm grip. "Sidi. From Sharrowsmith's, most recently. I gathered the only skill that I would improve there was my bartering, so I requested a transfer for Confirmation.

"Where are you from?" he asks politely. "I do not recognize the style."

Dark Archive

The dwarf gives Lydia a nod as he continues writing. Nice to see another Dark Archive representative here, lass

Grand Lodge

Sidi's hand dwarfs Ilenna's as she shakes it. Pleased to meet you! I hail from Varisia, though I haven't been back in years. Nora and I have pretty much stuck to the forests exploring as much as we can, just the two of us. We heard about the Society and came to join up. I don't know much about the latest fashions. These are just a few trinkets that I picked up in my travels. She says, gesturing to the assorted items hanging off her clothing.

Sovereign Court

Does anyone know how to make this thread appear in my profile so It is easier to find? I assumed it would automatically add like posting to the gameplay thread of the Flaxseed lodge but no go.

Grand Lodge

Fastest way is to go to aliases, finds this alias, go to posts and click on this link. That is until the gameplay tab is set up. Then you can just go to the campaign tab.

Hallimir wrote:

The sylph nods his head in acknowledgement. "Of course, Hallimir. I am most familiar with Armun Kelisk, the greatest city on the Plane of Air, but I have studied other regions in the great libraries. You are quite well-spoken. Do you have other skills as well?"

Sovereign Court

Ilenna wrote:

Thanks

"Ah yes, I have heard of the great Capital of the Plane of Air, but little else. Have you been there? I would like to travel there one day, and given recent events, it may soon happen should our confirmation go well."

Hallimir takes a seat still within earshot of Janira.

"As for my skills, why yes, I would say that I am quite good at manipulating items and getting in and out of places that require discretion and tact...a helpful skill as a pathfinder, so I'm told. What of yourself, how would you seek to aid in our glory?"

Silver Crusade

El Garrapata watches the others speak until he finally grins widely and claps the nearest two people on their backs. "Discretion! Tact! Excellent! You all have such lovely words! I bet you have the best words! Truly that fickle lady Fate has smiled on us! Let us ADVENTURE TOGETHER!" He strikes a pose and marches out of the room. A few moments pass and he pops back in, looking slightly sulky. "I thought we were going to adventure. Hmmm. Maybe talking is an adventure, too... YES! LET US LET OUR LIPS DO THE ADVENTURING!" He sits down and grins again.

Liberty's Edge

He looks slightly taken aback by El Garrapata's antics, watching, unblinking, as the man marches out of the tavern. Just as he regains his composure, the boisterous blue-armored brawler returns.

"Plan and direction are good words, too. There is much to be said for the spontaneity of the open road, I believe several of us are waiting for confirmation assignments," Sidi counsels in an attempt to be helpful.

Silver Crusade

El Garrapata nods. "Yes! We must have CONFIRMATION of ADVENTURE! Truly adventure is a slippery fish, my friend. The tighter you hold the more it slips out of your grasp! We must hold adventure loosely in our cupped hands and whisper words of encouragement! 'Adventure, you are mighty! You are epic! You ARE A SLIPPERY FISH OF FORTUNE!'" He mimes cupping his hands and whispering to an invisible fish.

Liberty's Edge

"I'm not familiar with that... particular... saying." Sidi scratches his jaw.

The giant Bas'o turns back to Ilena. "You were saying? Ah, you are new to the Society. So you have not apprenticed at one of the Lodges?"

Liberty's Edge

Aicadh takes a seat at a corner table and grabs a tankard. "Such strange people in Absalom. There will be good stories to tell at home just telling of these people." She looks at Airyn and raises a hand in greeting. "A traveller from the skies? This seems a good omen, the north winds bring many caravans from the Crown to us back home."

Grand Lodge

Ilenna watches as the large man in blue runs in and out shouting like a madman. Hopefully he didn't wake up Nora. She really hates being woken up from a nap. As he mimics holding a fish, she bursts into uncontrollable giggles, dumbfounded by this man.

Shaking her head to get rid of the giggles and resume her conversation with Sidi... I started an apprenticeship with the Grand Lodge about a week or so ago. The people seem great and the fit seems right, but they keep giving me busy work... cleaning floors, running messages, and the like. I have much more to offer than just being a maid! After all that work I came here for a stiff drink. Apparently I made the right decision... She grabs the mug of mead that had just been placed before her and takes a long drink before slamming it back down, causing mead to slosh onto the table. Which lodge do you represent, Sidi? How long have you been a Pathfinder?

And now from the GM: "Huh?" Face to face over a table is for my money the best role-playing experience period. As a GM and player can bring everything that makes storytelling a great experience to bear: empathy, voice, body language, props, lighting, comedic/dramatic timing, and the suddenly unexpected.

Once again Jamira turns to flee, er leave, the tavern. Maybe out the back? She wonders again why she ever comes to this place. People who frequent the Flaxseed are always marking it up with dots for some reason, and most times no one even talks in here, they just post crap and leave. Whatever.

She turns from the obviously distracted halfling back to Sidi and the interesting man. Well she certainly seems distracted! She takes another swig from her mug, much larger than one would think such a small person would be capable of. Looks like it's back to dusting the trophies in the Grand Lodge for me! Gonna need a few more of these! She signals to get the bartender's attention, points at her drink, and continues her conversation with Sidi.

If any of your characters have seen any play elsewhere please provide me a list of scenarios. It might be important later.

Let's call it about 36-40 hours to the final pick deadline.
