"You're not wrong," says Ozpin to Esper and Shamrock. "The White Fang started with good intentions." He takes a sip from his mug. "You probably know what they say about those. You'll find that things that look bright and clean in the light of day--" He glances out the window, towards the early morning sun over the Verdant forest. "--Are often much darker than they appear. The White Fang have been pushing into Vale, and they have done things that are at odds with our way of life. I suspect they are connected with that beast you faced during your entrance exams, for instance." He takes a longer drink. "And they've made my life and job very difficult, as of just now."

"As I said, we've vetted new students much more throughly than the older ones, and I've run low on students I can trust," he says, his eyes sliding across each of you in turn, carefully, but approvingly. "I'd like to offer you some extra-curricular work throughout the year, potentially on missions that are a year or two above your level. In addition to valuable experience, you'll get a small stipend and, depending on timing, you might miss an exam here or there." His smile reaches his eyes at that, though it soon falters. "What I'm asking of you is to take on the work of grown Huntsmen and Huntresses, because I believe you can handle it. There is, of course, no shame in saying no."

"Sooo... I take it we can't tell anyone about these missions... Right?" Carmine asks. Hunter by our first day of class? Jackpot! I'm gonna need to read up between missions.

"I mean. I'm all for it, sure." he adds quickly. He looks at the other three. "But we have to do it as a team. If everyone else is in, then so am I."

Azure simply says "I'm in", and hopes there's no quaver in her voice to give away the misgivings she's having at getting "assignments" a year or two above her training.

Esper was a bit off-guard by Carmine and Azure's sudden enthusiasm for it, but hey if it made them all better at what they were here for in the end. "Professor you are putting a lot of trust and faith in us. Not to say i'm one to back out of a challenge like this, but how will this affect our classes? I mean we are here as students, so i don't think missing a few exams would sit well with Miss Goodwitch, or any of our professors really."

Internally Espers' inner thrill seeker and boastful nature were both trying to strangle that part of her brain that tried to think sensibly, This is a perfect opportunity to get out there and do some good and see some danger, why are you trying to make sense!

She cleared her throat for a moment before continuing, "Though if the others are in then, well I'll do anything to show that the white fang doesn't represent all Faunus."

"I'm all in, since that's a great opportunity..." And a nice challenge! "But why students?" Shamrock is puzzled by Headmaster's proposal. "There must be more experienced Hunters?"

"I won't be placing you up against anything you can't handle," says Ozpin. "For the most part, I value testing your abilities in the field much more highly than anything you might put on paper." He sips again, mulling over Shamrock's question. "The unfortunate nature of it right now is that we're spread rather thin, due to the White Fang as well as..." He stops, seeming to catch himself. "...Well, I suppose that's enough about that. It's almost time for your next period, and you four still need to change back into your uniforms."

Ozpin waves the four of you out, though he still seems amicable. "For now, simply keep an eye out for anything strange amongst your classmates," he says. "Do your best, and study hard. I'll be in touch once I have a mission that's fitting for your abilities."

Everybody take 2 XP, which should give you your first advance. :) Let me know what you're taking, either here or in the discussion thread. The next post will likely jump us ahead a couple of weeks to when you're more settled in at Beacon, so if there is anything you'd like to pursue during the downtime, please let me know.

Shamrock will read on Hunters' tactics for different Grimms - in addition to classes. Ozpin said "against anything you can't handle". And since we handled the spider pretty well...
Also spend time in town if that becomes possible. And socializing. Well, the usual.

If it's possible to go into town, Azure will do so, to see the sights. She'll either go on her own, or with Shamrock should he express an interest in going out loud.

Otherwise, she'll be hitting the books (and training mats) hard, wanting to do the very best that she can. No late night parties for her!

Yeah, sorry. I was hoping I could give the SBOT thread a minute to catch up, but it looks even deader in the water. >_>;; I'll get you all back under way if you're all still with us.

The following three weeks are significantly quieter than your first two days at Beacon.

Carmine gets familiar with the inner workings of everyone's weapon, assuming they'll let him look. Though he hasn't yet had time to refine designs and tinker with everyone individually, he's surely full of ideas after taking a look, particularly at Esper's foreign weapon.

Azure and Shamrock explore town on the off days, getting familiar with the layout of Vale City. Orabel happily recommends a handful of good places to go, from a nice bookshop (with a great selection of books on Grimm to read up on) to a good weaponsmith to a couple of little hole-in-the-wall restaurants that serve great food. That said, Azure is significantly more eager to train and go to bed on time, while Shamrock gets invited out to a couple of late nights out with a few of the other Beacon students.

Esper is approached a couple of times by some of the older Faunus students. They mostly seem to be good-natured and concerned, and warn about a couple of the other teams. They let you know that they're sure you can take of yourself, but they're happy to help if any of the humans give you any trouble.

Floyd lives. After the events of the sparring session, he keeps a nasty scar on the edge of his neck, but heals quickly. That and his quiet demeanor seem to give the girls in your year the impression that he's significantly cooler than he actually is. Team FRET stays quiet for the most part, and Raz Morris doesn't get in trouble. Rumor has it that the video footage doesn't show anybody tampering with the safety equipment, although, suspiciously, you do know somebody with an invisibility semblance.

Classes are straightforward, though not exactly simple. Port oscillates between boring and terrifying via live Grimm demonstrations. Oobleck's history and politics lessons are blazing fast if you can pay attention. And of course, Glynda continues to work you to the bone in combat training, though she's always careful to check the safeties now. On the rare occasion you see Ozpin outside of the CCT tower, he gives you a knowing nod, but for three weeks, you hear nothing further about his promised extra-curricular activities.

However, you receive a message on your scrolls the Sunday before your next week of classes. It instructs you to pack your bags and your lockers for a mission the following morning at 0430. And so you find yourselves yawning in the darkness at the foot of the Vale CCT Tower, with your most reclusive teacher. Professor Peach is a tall, tan woman in a lab-coat dress you've barely taken a class from. It seems like she's never on campus, to the extent that her Dust sciences class is almost a free period. The two classes she's actually bothered to show up to since you've started have been equal parts enlightening and terrifying, and you all felt at least a little lucky to escape with your eyebrows intact.

"Hello~!" She sings out, high heels clacking on the pavement as a light airship descends, already loaded with your lockers and ready to grab your luggage. "I am very pleased to meet you, Team CASE!" She shakes each of your hands, in a whirlwind of activity, before half-shoving you towards the airship ramp. "You all look like fascinating test subj--students, testing students, in my classes, hoho!"

She's a morning person.

Yawning, Azure misses Professor Peach's fumble. Altho she is also a morning person, having to get up at 4 AM is a bit *too* early...

Esper takes the time to listen to any suggestions Carmine would have while her weapon was torn apart. She took the wisdom of the older stidestudents to heart and kept an eye out for anyone being bullied, stepping in as needed. She even visited Floyd when she wasn't bogged down with class, offering him her notes for the days he missed.

Esper wasn't a morning person, she was an active person but mornings were not her cup of tea especially with the time difference from Vacuo. She sluggishly hauled her weapons and backpack to the tower. Dragging behind the rest of the group. "Can't we wait until after breakfast?"
She groaned again tempted to swing her pack around and grab a snack, but resists for the time being. Instead she pulls her shield up again as it has started to say on her shoulders. Much like Azure she doesn't catch the professor's slip up. In the few classes that Professor Peach had been present for Esper hadn't been able to make even the slightest guess at her weapon of choice, unlike Port or Glynda, Ooblek was also a bit of a wild card in that department.
She lazily looked around in search of Carmine.

Peach ushers the four of you on board, letting you get seated and buckled in. She stays standing, gripping an overhanging handle, and leans in unpleasantly close to Shamrock. Shouting over the noise of the VTOL engaging to take you up in the air, she says "Better living through chemistry, Mr. Duille!" Drawing a vial from somewhere within her lab coat, she shakes it, and the powder inside sparks violently, though it can't escape the glass. "Anhydrous caffeine mixed with volt Dust! Barely any side effects at all."

As the airship begins to level off, cruising a few hundred feet above the Verdant forest, you notice that she violently twitches at least once or twice a minute.

"Now, I'm sure you're all terribly curious as to where you're going," she says, gesturing out through the windows at the blackness that is only very occasionally punctuated by light from some communications post or shack in the middle of nowhere. "Tell me, do any of you know of Sable Agriculture? They make up the majority of the country's produce." She sighs dreamily, her eyes staring out into the inky blackness outside the ship. "And they have a state-of-the-art Dust-powered farm. One of the Schnee company's largest customers!" She waves a hand airily. "And we'll have two whole weeks to study it." Her hands drift to her face, framing it with her fingers. "Just think of the dust!!"

Carmine, as disinterested in taking artificial stimulants as he is, finds the idea of studying dust more extensively very interesting. "Awesome! I need to practice more with my dustcraft either way." he says energetically.

Esper strapped in after placing her shield between her seat and the next one over. pulling the belts down quietly she pulled her backpack into her lap. "So we are going to study a... *yawn* A dust farm?" She rubbed at her eyes again. It was clear that she had only just gotten her armor and gear on since it was quite sloppy still. Were it not for the obscene sound of the VTOL's Engines she may have been able to fall asleep again. "Can't say i'm one for using pure dust, but there are a few good kinds that work well with my weapons."

"A dust farm or a farm powered by dust?... Whate..." the ending drowns in a wide yawn.

Shamrock doesn't look too enthusiastic about their trip. He's not really the type to use even dust rounds, never mind the raw dust. Then something hits him.

"Two weeks?!"

Female Human Huntress/Novice; Parry=7; Toughness=8(2); Fighting=d10; Shooting=d10, Notice=d6; 15 PP

As cloudy as her mind is from being awake at this obscene hour, Azure is perhaps a little more forward with a professor than she should be, saying "Professor Peach, I thought Professor Ozpin said he would be testing our abilities in the field? How is studying a dust farm going to do that? And how do we make up missing two weeks of our other classes - all that homework, and quizzes, and exams?"

"The latter, Mr. Duille!" She says, excitedly. "Chances are you've all eaten produce from Sable Agriculture. Even you, Ms. Fiore! But their farm is unique, almost completely automated! It's unprecedented" She twitches again, and as the airship enters a subtle turn, she grabs back onto one of the overhead grips. "Ah! But you are studious, of course," she says to Azure. "For your homework and testing, I'll be administering lessons as indicated by your other teachers." She draws her scroll and flips through a set of lesson plans with her thumb.

"And I'll be asking you for an extra credit assignment on Dust," she says. You can see her casually deleting several paragraphs out of Professor Port's lesson plan as she talks. "Though that isn't the reason you're here. There's been a string of quite unnatural Grimm attacks. There are few people out here, which means they should be escaping detection. We'll be guarding the farm, and investigating. Professor Ozpin thinks it's a little suspicious. Plenty to do for two weeks!"

She twitches again, and then glances over to Carmine, her eyes scanning along his luggage. "Hmmm. Maybe I should have warned you to bring spare clothes."

Carmine groans. "Ugh... laundry." he sighs. "I packed my tools and... It's too late to go back, isn't it?" he asks, hanging his head. Welp, I foresee me in just my shorts for a while. Maybe I can figure out how to clean my clothes with an application of dust?

He opens one of his notepads and starts scribbling, doing some preliminary math-work on applications of elemental dust.
Dustcraft: 1d10 ⇒ 6wild: 1d6 ⇒ 5
"Maybe... water element... but I'd need air or fire after to dry it... What if I wove dust into my clothes so they were self-cleaning? That'd be more efficient..." the young man will continue to mumble to himself as he delves deeper and deeper into his head.

Esper half listened to Carmine and Professor Peace talk drifting off slightly even through the thunderous sounds of the engines. "We won't be getting up this early everyday will we Professor?

She was certain she had caught something about laundry within the conversation, it wasn't commonplace to do laundry aboard a sand-ship, so she had learned well in her life to pack extra clothing even if she were just going out for the day.

"It wou-yawn-be kind of neat to learn more about dust application though. I use it all the time in my board, always keep a vial of white dust on hand in case i need to really get out of a sticky situation."

Another yawn.

"I have some dust cartridges. I don't really use them, so I can give you a couple."

Maybe we can get some work clothes there at least?

"You could weave in the dust," Peach observes. "It would almost definitely have to be done down to the thread though, so it may not be easy to do it to clothes using already woven fabrics." She watches his math with fascination. "Don't forget about the binding coefficient," she says, pointing. "But that looks... Impressive for someone your age."

You figure out how to make a decent laundry detergent out of a few small portions of blue dust. :)

"Some of you might!" She says to Esper. "If we're going to be having you guarding, you might work in shifts. Somebody would have to be up at night, and somebody would have to relieve them in the morning. Hm..."

Aside from observing Carmine's math, she mostly stays quiet and twitchy for the remainder of the flight, though she's happy to answer questions. As the sun begins to dawn, she points excitedly out the window. "Look, children! Sable Farms!"

The Verdant forest gives way to neatly manicured rows of rice and wheat and corn. Threshing machines with mounted dust cylinders are tilling some of the fields as airships dust others from a few hundred feet below you. Atlesian bots, modified from military service, cull individual plants. From the air, you only spot maybe two people working here and there, mostly performing maintenance on the machines. In the center of it all, a tall building with thick, man-sized tubes of dust running up the sides rises a couple stories into the air. The entire enclosure is ringed by a twenty or thirty foot wall, the only break in it being a huge concrete tube running to the central building.

"S-so much dust..." Peach repeats, abandoing her handhold and pressing her face up to the airship glass to stare as you start to descend.

She grabbed at her harness and unstrapped taking a hold of the hand-hold above her and peered out the window herself. The flight had been long enough for her to shake away most of the tired feelings.

"Wow.. I don't think i've ever seen so much food or machinery not covered in sand before. There are places like this all over Vale?"

She was half tempted to nudge Professor Peach out of the way so she could push her own nose against the glass in amazement, "Are those AK-100s?" She pointed towards the tiny robots on the field as they neared the ground.

"Not many, no," says Peach to Esper. "This is the big one! If it works for more than a couple of years, it means so much for business, for agriculture, for, for..." Her eyes shine excitedly as the airship touches down. "For science~!" She almost sings, opening up the door and kicking down the ramp.

It lands a foot or two before the loafers of a well-dressed man in a charcoal-grey suit, flanked by two of the AK-100s--these ones unmodified and still armed. He adjusts his striped tie and politely averts his eyes as Peach, short skirt first, descends and shakes his hand. "Children, this is Mr. Sable," she says. "Of the Vale Council! This is his farm. I didn't expect him to greet us personally..."

"Team CASE," he says. His voice is a pleasant rumble that belies his severe face. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for agreeing to care for my farm for a short while." His eyes glance across each of you, and then linger on Azure in particular, with something like recognition. He straightens his tie again, then nods, clearing his throat. "Please, come this way. I'll show you to your quarters." It's a short walk from the platform you landed on into the building itself, but the inside is almost an immediate labyrinth of pipes running dust, coolant, produce and water in every direction. "Try to keep up," he says, pleasantly, but not reducing his pace as he leads you deeper inside.

Esper was lucky to have to retrieve her things when the older Atlesian knight model was presented to her in it's unmodified state and the girl's cheeks beamed as she half followed Mr. Sable. 'I wonder if i could tear one apart i'm sure it's got some good parts in there. Wait no these are still owned and operational, but maybe if they weren't...'

Try to keep up

She snapped back to reality for a bit as she came to the realization that they had traveled into the pipe filled halls. "You have no idea what i would give to take look at this place more. Like hearing about it was kinda lame but seeing it up close ooh i just wanna strip the bolts from these pipes.. the machines, these Atlesian Knights I didn't even know this model was still a big hit in Vale. I figured they'd have the newer 120s. Ooooh if only I could take one home with us I bet mom could make a fortune."

Her fingers began to wave only inches away from the nearest knight. Wireing, dust converters and atomizers, the servos, the plating all of it so well maintained and ripe for the... wait what was their mission again? She leaned close to Carmine and whispered"Hey is there.. any way you could get me some parts from the newer models you did say you were from Atlas right, they've gotta have that sweet new tech."

Shamrock effortlessly keeps with the Mr. Sable's stride, at the same time listening to his team and browsing the piping. The pipes don't look very interesting, at least for him and without understanding of what they do.

Azure:
Sable is one of the seats of the Vale Council. The political responsibilities of the position include a lot of fundraising and work on international relations, which means that at some point, he's likely moved in the same circles as your parents. It's hard to tell if he knows you personally, but he likely picked up on the resemblance.

Sable's face remains passively irked, but a tinge of amusement creeps into his voice. "Please don't strip the bolts off my pipes, young lady," he says. "This whole place is a tough and well-oiled machine, but an understaffed one." He slows his pace ever so slightly as he leads you into what looks to be the central room.

It's enormous, like a warehouse filled with winding pipes above and below you as you walk out onto a platform suspended above the action. Dust runs in contrary directions, angling into the walls at different heights, criss-crossing around each other. There's a dull, steady noise of rushing water, and as he leads you out onto a catwalk, you can see one of the pipes churning water into a vat, which itself breaks off into more pipes and irrigation channels. The wall on the far end rumbles and begins to lift as the modified AK-100s bring in the harvest and sort it onto conveyor belts below the pipe, on a busy factory floor.

"I always love to show this room off," Sable says, raising his voice slightly over the water and the marching bots. Peach seems utterly beside herself, and Sable coughs politely, twice, before doubling back and taking her arm in his to lead her off from the catwalk. "As I was saying, a well-oiled machine," he says. "The only problem is the damn Grimm." He slides a badge across a door lock and it hisses, opening into a service elevator. As he takes you in, the door shuts off the sound of the rushing water, and he relinquishes Peach's arm.

"I'll show you to your quarters," he rumbles. "And to the site of our most recent attack."

Her ears having pricked up at Sable's "take care of my farm" comment, she actually breaks out into a grin at the mention of Grimm and a recent attack. "Ah ha!" she says, looking at no one in particular, "so we're *not* here to study dust or farming methods, but to protect the farm! That's better!"

Esper's shrinks back a little at what both Carmine and Sable say, mostly Sable however as she seems to not have realized that she said everything out loud."Well I guess I can always just ask like Sham said.. right?" She was again astounded by the effort put into this well oiled machine of a farm/factory. Seeing the winding pipes it almost made her wonder if someone from Vacuo helped to un-streamline things.

"Someone must have worked really hard on programming the Knights to sort fruits and veggies. It's really strange seeing ones modified for, well agriculture. Are there any Centurions here as well?"

"My goodness, you didn't think you flew all the way out here for a field trip, did you?" He asks, sounding a little incredulous. He waves you into the inside of the room, like a much more compact version of your dorm. Four lockers are set up, each with a neatly folded uniform and a pair of knee-high waders next to them. Sable slips on an extra pair of the rubber boots before passing a pair over to Peach.

"I may have uh, gotten a little carried away about the mechanical aspects of your farm," mutters Peach, kicking off her high heels to put on the waders and gesturing for the four of you to do the same.

"Well, there is more than meets the eye here, I'm afraid," says Sable, waiting a moment for you to get your boots on before leading you down the hall a short ways to a door outside. "No, no, I'm afraid Atlas keeps the really heavy weaponry for themselves, or for city work. They feel that Centurions or Paladins here would be a waste... Though, if I had a Paladin, I'd have liked to see the Grimm try to get past that."

The outside of the building is quite clear, though the ground in the shade of the building is muddy and wet from lightly leaking pipes. Sable takes point again, taking you to the far corner and gesturing to a series of deep-set scratches, trailing down the wall from almost fifteen feet up. "This is the most recent one, it happened just last night. Unfortunately, my cameras have been malfunctioning and I don't have the footage," he says. "One of our night watchmen insists it was a Beowolf, but the damage to the building is... Substantial, for a Grimm of that size." He waves to the field. "It tore off into one of my soy fields and disappeared, but I imagine it's still out there somewhere. The AKs and the threshers are keeping an eye out for it, but I and the rest of my workers will certainly sleep better at night knowing there's a huntress and a team of trainees keeping an eye out..."

Notice at -2:
The scratches are deeply set into the wall, and they also start quite high up. True to Sable's word, they would be quite large for a single Beowolf--they're bordering on sizable even for an Ursa Major. Besides, Beowolves travel in packs. What's more curious is that you can see tracks where the Grimm ran away into the fields, but there are no tracks that would have gotten it to the wall in the first place.

Carmine stares up at the wall and shakes his head. "No... no way it's a beowulf." He points to the tracks. "And... there's no way he just 'walked' up to this wall. Look at the tracks. He left, but there's no sign that it arrived here on foot. A... nevermore?"

Esper looked at the boots with a bit of confusion but decided to put them on anyway, guess her current boots wouldnt cut the terrain?

"Yeah a centurion on each corner would be amazing, though the paladin is more suited to assist in territory grabs and groups working to reclaim land from grimm. If they want to make the paladin more for defense than it needs a bit of model work on its joint actuators and horribly unreliable fireing systems. You cant use the paladin to its fullest without causing lots of damage to the surrounding area right now. But if they could fix a few things in a future model then it would make a great offensive and defensive mech."

Esper got caught up in her explaination of the paladin versus the centurion to really notice the markings on the wall.

"But the centurion was made specifically for defense with its shield systems and grimm deterants. You get a phalanx of them and you'd be hard pressed to break through. With enough ammunition and Earth dust to them you can defend an outpost well long enough to call in some local hunters. Though i guess on their own they are pretty weak so that brings up the topic of cost effectiveness. Not good for long term defenses and more of a crisis response unit. And i hear they are pretty rare outside of Atlas and Mistral territories. So the price for a battalion here in vale aside from the cost of the dust to run them are kind of... detremental. If they could improve the dust efficiency and make them stronger single units while retaining the stregths that come with their unity then it would be a boon to all the kingdoms."

"Nevermore? Here? We're not ready now, so I hope it's not. But I'd love to fight one of those things some day."

Shamrock turns to Sable.
"You don't have any cameras?"

Sorry for delay, I thought I posted.

No worries, I should have updated by now anyway >_>

Sable chuckles at Esper. "Maybe I should have you design my security protocols, when you graduate someday." To Shamrock he shakes his head. "We've had a lot of problems with the memory for our camera systems. The guards can keep an eye on the live feeds, but nothing's actually recording."

"Hmmmm," Sable says, stiffening, tracing his eyes across the tracks and scratches with Carmine. "Good eye, young man. A Nevermore..." He looks again, then to Peach, he adds "The fields are clear and the tracks give out eventually--if it's a Nevermore, it's long since gone. But you're welcome to take a look around and try to figure out where it came from to begin with." Peach nods, her eyes also following the tracks. "Well, for now, you can get settled in," continues Sable. "I imagine you know quite a bit more about Grimm movement than I do, so I'll let you set their schedule, Professor."

"I'll get you some uniforms and badges shortly," he says as he leads you back in through the muddy parts of the field, letting you kick off the overboots and settle in to your barracks room. "For now, I have some pressing business to attend to," he says. "Feel free to take a look wherever you want within the facility--within reason, of course." The door hisses shut behind him. Peach sits on one of the beds, pulling up her scroll, and then a larger scroll out of her bag. She sets the large scroll down, and it lets out a wide, long beam of light, scanning the room. Peach nods, apparently approving of whatever it just did, and crosses her legs.

"So, children. Your first lesson as real Huntsmen and Huntresses is one in obvservation. What can you tell me about Mr. Sable?"

"Well i think there is more to the situation than Mr. Sable leads in, he seems a bit uneasy about the situation even though we are here to handle it. He wss flanked by two AK-100s when we arrived and judging that hes a member of the Vale council i guess he is usually stuck up in an office or surrounded by security when he is out.
Since his name is plastered onto this faciluty i would guess this is how he gains political pull, by having a functioning faciluty with no security issues to address. I guess that because of his insistence that we hurry to our rooms and the job at hand. Which means he's either impatient or expected to show results soon and he wants efficient results cause ya know this 'is' a well oiled machine. Mr. Sable is also very sure that it is a grimm attack, but there's something i dont get.

Grimm usually only attack places where there are lots of people, but he even said that this place was understaffed and ive only seen androids and heavy machinery. So it feels like there is a bit more than we are being let onto i think. But he could also be trlling the truth and just has very bad staff who can tell a beowolf from a nevermore."

Esper kicked off the waders and slipped back into her normal boots before sprawling out on the bed with her small pack of supplies. She would stare at the ceiling for a bit before looking around the room again.
