Pharast 2, Oleg's Trading Post After spending the morning with the soldiers you head south. The terrain is plains and there is light to medium snow througout the day. After about 6 hours the plains begin to turn into hilly terrain. As you come over one hill in the distance you can see some sort of animal graveyard. An approximately 200 foot radius circle contains skeletons of boars, deer, bears and you even spy a human skelton among the remains. The region does not lie on your path, but it is within a easy ride if you want to investigate.

K/Nature DC18:
The way the animals are laid out remind you vaguely of how the insect carcasses look outside a trap door spider's lair.

K/Religion or Spellcraft DC 17:
This could be some sort of unharrowed circle, but you would have to get within range with a Detect Magic spell active to be sure.

Pharast 2 - At Oleg's

Rising early the next morning, Wilhelm groans as his muscles ache is protest at the sudden movement. This is the price you pay for staying alive, and they never do mention it in the songs. Funny that. With a sardonic chuckle, he lifts himself from bed and prepares himself for the road, packing his gear away neatly. Having done so, he straps on his armor and takes his sword to a quiet corner of the trading post to limber up. His breath fogs the chill morning air amidst the snow as he exerts himself, loosening muscles tense with exertion. Once satisfied with his work, he prepares his horse for a day's ride and eats a quick meal with the rest of his new squad.

"It's rather a shame that my dear cousin and that clever fellow - Venkar, was it? - had to leave in such a hurry. With Madja I have to wonder if her father caught wind of this patrons of our little expedition. I wouldn't put it past the rest of my family to manufacture some excuse, not that I think Madja was misleading us of course. Just that there's little love lost between most of the Orlovsky's and Restov. Ah, but I'm sorry, the politics of nobles bore me and I can only imagine it much for the rest of you."

After the meal, Wilhelm finishes his last preparations and meets with the rest of his squad. Seeing Viktor speaking with an unfamiliar face, he stops for a moment, studying the shorter man for a time before returning to his tasks. When the man joins the rest of the squad as it leaves the post, he arches an eyebrow. A man without armor of any type joining our little expedition. Interesting thing, that. Later, on the road, he'll ride up beside the man and introduce himself, "Hail friend! My name is Wilhelm Orlovsky, Paladin of my Lady Iomedae the Inheritor. You'll forgive me for not shaking your hand, I find it likely that I'd fall from my saddle if I leaned that low in this clunky mess of armor. Ah, I'm sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. You are?" Wilhelm flashes his teeth in a friendly smile and inclines his head in greeting.

"Well then, that's unusual and rather disturbing. I assume the rest of you can see the open graveyard over there? Do you think it worth a look, Viktor? I for one dislike the idea of... whatever that is, being so close to our base of operations."

Lanya finds Viktor and Wilhelm talking to a new face and she walks towards them to listen what they are talking about before introducing herself when the conversation ended.

"Greetings and well met, I am Lanya Beladon of House Medvyed. A pleasure to meet you Koilia. I am a diplomat of sorts for my House in these lands and as such I hope to converse with many of the native inhabitants to talk about our later settlement of this area."

Lanya rides close to Viktor on their way to the bandit's encampment as Ben pointed out to them, now noticing the boneyard nearby she looks if she knows anything like this.

He turns to Lanya, "An unharrowed circle? Who would have put it here?" He considers for a moment. "I am loathe to waste time finding Kressle, but I agree with Wilhelm. I care not for something so sinister near the post, nor do I feel comfortable leaving it at our backs without at least confirming it represents no immediate threat. Let's approach it cautiously."

He turns his horse towards the circle and stops about 30 ft. from it's edge.

Nodding his assent, Wilhelm follows the group's intrepid leader. As he rides, he keeps his eyes on the surrounding land. Wouldn't do to get ambushed like a bunch of rank amateurs, now would it? As the group closes on the circle, he draws his sword and makes a brief intonation to Iomedae, closing his eyes briefly. When he opens them, the world seems to glow briefly for a moment before returning to normal. Puzzled by the lack of a stain on his vision of the boneyard, Wilhelms says, "Oddly there is no great evil marring the land either. Are we simply looking at some beast's den?"

Viktor shakes his head, "If it's a beast den where is the beast? Or the den for that matter? I would imagine it would be at the center of this carnage, but I don't see anything there."

He frowns and looks around for any signs of movement. Seeing nothing, he reaches into his pouch and pulls out a small cloth. "Maybe I'm being paranoid, but..." He mutters a few words and makes a gesture with his hand and suddenly the sound of four horses trotting emits from nowhere and moves out into the circle.

Ghost Sound

This only lasts for a few seconds before the sound fades.

As the sound of horses head across the circle both Wilhelm and Lanya notice a patch of earth move as if something started to come out but then drew back. It is very cunningly hidden, a trap door spider the size of a horse. It is still in its lair, with total concealment, but you now know where and what it is. The lair lies about 200 feet from the party on the side of small hillock which is the approximate center of the boney debris.

Once Lanya points the thing out, everyone can make out where the trap door is, but the spider still remains concealed.

"A bold risk my lord. I would not take it myself, just because I'd probably fall off the horse, at the worst time." This comment is for Viktor.

Anastacia is already dismounted, she did it earlier to cast detect magic.

Everyone sets up as Viktor plays at being bait. It works. Once Viktor gets to around 60' from the lair the spider darts out. And its fast, all legs and fangs. If Viktor wasn't expecting it, the spider would have been on him before he could react.

I've used my best guess as to your setup on the map. Viktor, Lanya, Wilhelm and Marik are still mounted. I figured Wilhelm would place himslf between the spider and the ladies and placed Koila and Marik off to the side. Scale is now 5'. The spider just did a standard action and moved 45' out of its lair so the lair lies 30' beyond the upper right hand of the map. The Spider's initiative is 17 so everyone rolls initiative. Everyone gets a standard action as it comes out of the lair (the horses are surprised so no move action for those mounted except Viktor, on the other hand no ride checks yet either). If you get a 17 or better on your initiative then you'll get a full action afterwards, but if you're mounted you'll need to make a move action to control your horse. Ride check DC 20 or the horse double moves away from spider. Spider's AC is 16, Touch 12 and is not flatfooted. It has 23 hit points. I am totally OK if any who wish to be off their horses can start the fight dismounted, except for Viktor of course.

Move action - fail to control mount, Standard action - inspire courage +1 atk/damage/saves vs. fear

GM, ride rules say if you fail the ride check you have to spend a full-round action to control the mount and can take no other actions. It sounds like I could either spend a full-round action pretty much yanking on the reigns and making it go where I wanted, or let it run and take an action myself. Just want to make sure that I understand my options. If your interpretation is failure costs both a full round action and the mount goes where it wants as well then just remove inspire courage from my actions this round.

You can let it run and take an action yourself. Because you beat it on initiative you also have a Standard Action. Everyone was readying a standard action, the spider was readying to act once you got close. You got close it takes its readied action of moving out and I'm letting everyone else take a standard action in response. Then we'll act in initiative order with full round actions.

Working on a reply in between GMing my own Kingmaker game. Maybe I'm being dense but where is the map?

With a plan in place, Wilhelm will sheath his blade and dismount before drawing his bow. He creeps into position as quietly as his armor would allow before waving to Viktor. When the spider emerges, the young paladin gasps at the size of the thing but draws his bow and looses regardless. He shouts in exhilaration as he does so, "Down with you, beast! Bow to hit: 1d20 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 9 and Bow damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

The wagon won't be moving as fast as our horses, so we should catch up in a day I'd think. I say we follow the wagon. Any other thoughts?

Viktor shakes his head again and turns to the other four. "Let's not be turned from the path. We'll continue to Kressle's camp. Afterwards, we can come back here and investigate the wagon."

Let's go ahead and go to the camp first. We'll dismount when we're close and try to approach unawares. A night assault might be good, but we'd have to stumble around in the dark to try to catch them by surprise. I say let's just go for it now.

Lanya nods in silent agreement as Viktor looks to her.
She turns her horse to ride next to Viktor again as they make their way towards the bandit camp.

"I guess we might have an element of surprise on our side, but if we are spotted early, I'm not sure what tale I can spin to get an upper hand. I'll try my best of course, so let me start the talking if they question us."

"If I wanted to sneak up on someone, It would have to be out of my armor. That's something I'd rather not do. My fighting style is built around this armor. I don't try to duck or dodge much, I just let my shield take the hit and counterstrike, before my opponent can recover."
Anastacia has a look of embarrassment on her face. She imagines that the others, especially the noble born, are vastly more skilled at arms than she.
she shrugs. "I know it's not ideal, but it's all I know how to do. Maybe with practice I can learn some technique."

Hopefully our monk can do some recon for us. :)

At the Spider Den/"Pet Sematary"
Koilia tries to retrieve arrows from the carcass. GM discretion

He brushes aside a small hunk of who-knows-what from Wilhelm's shoulder when he emerges from the den.

Wilhelm
Thank you for braving the den.

The group seems to track well, Koilia observes.

He nods with Lanya in agreement with Viktor.

Replying to Koilia
Barking a laugh, Wilhelm replies, "Twasn't anything worth thinking of my friend. The worst I'd have lost is my lunch from the stench, eh?"

Pharast 3
"As you wish Viktor. Though, as Anastacia has pointed out, I'm rather uncertain how useful I can be sneaking up on them. I can give it a go if you want, of course. Perhaps we get fairly close and then let Koilia sneak a bit closer still? We'd be in a position to help should the need arise."

You continue down the logging trail which parallels the river on the north side. The trail crosses several streams, the hard freeze has not been enough to cover them with ice but the banks are very icy. You soon spot a wagon parked on the trail. It seems abandoned and there is some convenient cover where you can easily observe the wagon. This seems like a fine place to send out scouts to check out the rest of the trail.

I've linked a map above. Hopefully this time you can move your avatars. Currently you are one hex off the map and do not have to make stealth checks. The brown strip with the wagon on it is the trail. It crosses a stream but the rocks are icy and slippery. If you want to move 5' or 1/2 your move score you can make a Stealth Check and a Perception Check and move your avatar onto the map. (you can move more than 1/2 but take the penalties to stealth. Also keep in mind if you end your move without cover than you can't stealth)

Perception DC 14 if you have moved onto the map:
Where the single tree icon is there is a wooden platform 20' off the ground. There is a single bandit with a bow here with some cover (+2AC) and if your Stealth check was 10 or less or if you ended your move in the open he has seen you.

Koilia volunteers to scout.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

He moves forward a short distance, and quietly takes position behind the wagon.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

He carefully observes the scene.

Koila darts to the wagon and there is no alarm. He signals back to the group that there is 1 bandit on watch somewhere up ahead.
I don't think anyone else is stealthing, so keep on acting Koila. I think we may have lost Marik. Right now he has choosen 2 Cure Lights as his extracts so he will act as a healing platform that moves with the rest of the group.

Male Human HP 7/12 | AC 14 T11 F13 | CMD 14 | F +0 | R +3 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +3

Viktor nods at Koilia's signal and whispers to the others, "Looks like one ahead on watch. I don't think we can get too much closer ourselves without raising the alarm and I don't want to send Koilia in further where he can be cut off from out support. I'm going try to fascinate the guard. If it works, follow my lead but make no aggressive actions until we're in position. Be ready to move if this doesn't work."

Viktor's grey eyes meet those of each of his companions for a brief moment before he turns back to Koilia and makes a motion with his hands to wait.

Suddenly Viktor vanishes from sight.

Stealth: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 20 = 25

A few seconds later he reappears next to Koilia and steps out from behind the wagon. A low mesmerizing hum emanates from his throat as he steps out into view of the guard.

This is two rounds worth of actions for narrative sake. First round vanish and approach Koila. Second round step out and use fascinate bardic performance, DC 13. Feel free to retcon the second round if the bandit hears me.
