"A good night's sleep is in order I think. We've traveled here, attended a funeral, done historical research on the town, and broken into a crypt. I think that's a good days work for anyone. I'm ready to plan and rest."

"In that case, it sounds like you have everything planned out." Kendra smiles once everyone's had their fill of stew. She starts gathering up the dishes and taking them into the kitchen. "I wish the lot of you the best of luck."

The party retires to their rooms for the night. The guest rooms of the Lorrimor estate are well-maintained and clean, with fresh sheets and comfortable mattresses. The windows open up to views of the surrounding countryside, as pitch-black as it is.

The night passes...

As you settle in for the night, you think you catch a glimpse of something at your window...

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

Jayla was sitting on her bed when she saw something at her window. "Did you see that?" she whispered to Lirin who was nestled in her lap.

Picking up the thrush and placing Lirin on her shoulder, Jayla made her way cautiously over to the window, and, from the corner of the window frame peered out into the darkness beyond. Lirin peered out, too, in order to aid her mistress; her feathers puffed up nervously.

Jayla

Nothing seems to be visible as you peer out the window, even with your darkvision...

...

...

...did something just breathe on the back of your neck?

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

The unexpected breath on her neck set the hairs at the nape to stand tall. Jayla took courage and slowly turned around, her back now close to the wall and side of the window; Lirin standing close to her hair by her neck.

The Changeling peered about the bedchamber and checked for Lirin's reaction.

Jayla's Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Lirin's Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

"Who is in here? Reveal yourself, please." Jayla's voice remained steady and quiet even though her nerves were a little on edge at this nighttime intrusion.

Jayla

There doesn't appear to be anyone sharing your cell as you turn around. The cold straw mattress you got up from looks just as uncomfortable as ever--at least it's better than sleeping on the cold stone floor. The door looks to be closed and locked tight, and shows no sign of forced entry. Good. The other inmates here are... quite violent.

The mist outside the window starts to part, giving you a view of a small town beyond. It looks quite peaceful from here.

DC 15 Knowledge (Geography/Local):
...wait a minute.

From up where you are, the town looks like Ravengro. And it looks like you're south of town... where Harrowstone stands.

The mists outside come together and hide the town from view. Some of the mist tries to get in the window, but the bars stop it short.

A *squelching* sound comes from the wall next to you. Looking over, you see...

...blood. It's not coming from anything or anyone you can see, but it looks incredibly real. Some kind of unseeable force is spreading the blood on the stone wall... slowly and surely.

The smeared blood is painted into a letter...

J.

More blood appears next to the letter and starts crawling across the stonework...

A.

The strange force causes more blood to appear. It glistens and drips as it gets painted into another letter...

Y.

The smell of copper becomes unbearable as more blood appears...

L.

Your eyes open before things go any further.

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

As soon as her eyes opened, Jayla trembled, for the vision or whatever it had been seemed so real. She pondered the meaning for a short time as she slowed her breath and heart and gained her composure. The letters in blood spelling out her name - what did it mean - was it some kind of warning or portent? She would speak of it to her companions come morning.

Jayla's mismatched eyes took in her thrush; her voice soft and low, "How ominous and interesting. Let us sleep for we must rise and prepare my spells in the morning." Lirin nestled in the shawl "nest" Jayla had made for her earlier on the chair beside the cot. The Changeling then laid down, pulling the woollen blanket up high, and attempted to push the terrible vision from her mind so she could find sleep.

How ominous and spooky for the little Changeling!

Moonday, 6th of Lamashan, 4709 AR

The sun rises over the sleepy village of Ravengro, breaking through the early morning fog.

Jayla:
As you wake up for the day, the first thing you notice is something on the wall opposite your bed.

The letters in blood are there. They appear to have dried.

They still spell JAYLA.

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

Lirin fluttered and puffed up her feathers as she woke in her makeshift nest. Beside her, Jayla stirred, raised herself up into a sitting position and yawned. Wiping the sleep from her eyes, see immediately saw it - the red, bloodied letters spelling out her name as in her vision of last night. Who or what was seeking her out or singling her out in such a fashion? Jayla did not cry out in alarm, instead she carefully gathered up Lirin and placed her in her lap and then closed her eyes. The thrush was agitated at first but settled down when she saw her mistress begin. They sat together this way for an hour, communing, Jayla preparing her spells for the day ahead.

When Jayla was done with her spells, the little witch quickly undertook her morning ablution and dressed; yet her mismatched eyes remained fixed on the bloodied letters. She smoothed her bedclothes and Lirin flew up to her shoulder.

Opening the door of her bedchamber, Jayla called out to Khardan and the others, "Companions, I require your presence in my room, please. It is important," and then she waited for them to come as she continued staring at the letters.

Khardan appears almost immediately, dressed only in the worn pair of trousers in which he tends to sleep and perform his morning devotions.

On seeing the letters on the wall, he turns to regard his friend, eyeing her critically. "You alright, Jayla?" he asks softly.

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

"Aye, I am unharmed, my friend. But something strange happened to me before bed last night and I hoped by sharing it with you all this morning we could discover the meaning of it."

Once Imperia and Lord Bramwell join them in the bedchamber, Jayla begins to explain her vision and the strange happening with the blood.

"I glimpsed something in the window before bed. As I looked outside I could see nothing, but then I felt a breath on the back of my neck. As I turned around to see what was there I was suddenly transported someplace else - I found myself in a cell and I had gotten up out of cold, uncomfortable straw mattress. The door was closed and locked tight which I felt was good for the other inmates had violent dispositions. There was mist outside my cell window and when it parted I could see a small, peaceful looking town. Then the mists outside drew together and the town disappeared from view. Some of the mist tried to get in the window but was stopped by the bars. That is when I heard a *squelching* sound coming from the wall next to me and when I looked over I saw blood coming from no identifiable source and something was spreading it on the stone wall. The smeared blood formed letters - the letters of my name. The smell of the copper of the blood grew so strong that I opened my eyes before the last letter was formed. I though perhaps it was a vision - some portent - and promptly went to sleep. When I woke to prepare my spells, I found the bloodied letters spelling my name on the wall in this room - like in my vision. I do not know what it means."

"It means someone or something is messing with your mind. And it's able to affect the real world. And I think it's coming from Harrowstone. I say we go there today and make it stop."

Khardan is a strong believer in the direct approach to almost everything.

Bramwell listens to Jayla's story with great interest, fascinated by the occurrence. "Very interesting, I say. A nightmare, perhaps, were it not for the proverbial writing on the wall. Yes, I think Khardan is right. The only prison that comes to mind following your account is Harrowstone, it is." The dhampir steps into the room and slowly approaches the name written in blood. He stretches out his hand to touch it, closes his eyes, and when he opens them up again, his eyeballs have transformed into two crimson globes.

Lord Bramwell

Your magic-enhanced senses don't pick up any magic signatures in the room.

The dried blood flakes off a bit when you touch it with your hand.

"Breakfast's ready!" Kendra's voice calls out from downstairs.

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

Did the ancient man just accuse her of dreaming it all? Just a common nightmare? The Changeling bristled inwardly and her taloned hand curled in small ball to stop her from verbally lashing out at the dhampir. Lirin sensed her mistress' internal mood and began to rub her beak alongside her neck in a soothing fashion. It helped bring Jayla out of her ill temper.

"I had not yet gone to bed, sir, when the encounter first began. So, nay, it was no nightmare."

She watched as Bramwell eagerly approached the wall containing the bloodied letters and touched them. It was then she heard the lady of the house announce breakfast. "Let us not tarry and go break our fast with Mistress Kendra. After, I shall wash the blood off the wall so she is not frightened by it when we leave for Harrowstone." She gave a small, tight smile and then turned and made for the stairs.

Dhampir blight druid 3 / HP 21 of 26 / F+4 R+3 W+6 (+2 disease/mind-affecting, -1 damage, drain, or reduction of Str, Con, Dex)] / AC 16.12.14 / Init. +4 / Perc +9

Lord Bramwell throws a puzzled look at Jayla. "Hmm? Yes, yes. Let us not worry our hostess." He keeps looking at the changeling. Bramwell squints his eyes, tilts his head like a dog, and goes on. "Not a nightmare, yes, I know. You have the blood to prove it." The dhampir lowers his head and walks out of the bedroom, heading downstairs. "A hearty meal before we leave for Harrowstone, I say."

When the party comes downstairs, several plates of buttered toast and scrambled eggs are on the dinner table.

"Good morning, everyone." Kendra says with a smile. "Did you have a good night's rest?"

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

Jayla heard Bramwell's response and nodded before descending into the dining hall. Upon Kendra's question, the witch paused for only a mere second before she placed a warm smile on her face and replied, "Yes, thank you. The food smells delicious and I find I am hungry." Jayla took a seat at the table and politely reached for some toasted bread and eggs and placed them in her plate. She tore small pieces of the buttered bread and fed them to Lirin who happily devoured the pieces upon Jayla's shoulder (with only the occasional crumb left behind and then quickly cleaned off).

She looked to Kendra and politely enquired, "Did you sleep well, Mistress Kendra?", discreetly looking over the woman to determine if she was rested or other.

"I slept... as well as expected, I suppose." Kendra sighs. "Yourself?"

Imperia joins the group in Jayla's room. She had just finished with planning her Mental Focus for the day. She studies the writing and looks around the room to see if she can see anything out of place.

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

She hadn't answered Kendra's renewed question about sleeping well and she simply nodded, "It can be hard finding sleep in a new place. But aye, I rested well enough, and woke to your kind hospitality once again."

She let go of the gentle hold she had on Kendra's arm and forked some of the egg into her mouth and took a bite of her buttered toast. Kendra had poured her a cup of tea as soon as she had sat down and Jayla lifted the cup to her lips, blew across the surface and took a sip before speaking once more.

"What are your plans for the day, Mistress Kendra?"

Imperia's Perception (Jayla's Room):
Aside from Jayla's name scrawled in blood on the wall, nothing seems to be out of place...

The window of Jayla's room has a view of the road into town.

Kendra nods her head at the compliments. "It's no trouble at all... it's the least I can do to honour my father's last wishes." She takes a breath and sniffs.

"That sounds good. We need to know more about them, we do. Meanwhile, we will visit Harrowstone," Bramwell says, chewing on some bread. F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

"I just need a little time to finish a task and then we can leave for Harrowstone."

Turning to Kendra, the Changeling smiled, "Thank you for breakfast. And research into the Whispering Way would be most helpful while we are gone. Excuse me, please," and she moved to the foyer and quietly checked under the stairs for a bucket and brush then filled the bucket part way with water from the well outside and then climbed quietly up to her room to remove the bloodied letters off the wall (she will close the door partially so if Kendra walks by as she is cleaning, she doesn't see the blood on the wall). (Not sure how long all of this will take Jayla.)

When the Changeling was done, she threw out the bloody/dirty water and returned the bucket and bristled brush to their place under the stairs. She washed her hands and collected her pack with whatever she needed for Harrowstone, as well as her weapons, and met the others in the foyer.

I figured Imperia. Thanks for that. It's the gentlemen that didn't help. ;p

Alone (well except for Lirin who stood perched on the chair by the bed) in the bedchamber, Jayla methodically and diligently worked at removing the blood from the wall. It was an arduous task, but she was happier when it was cleaned off and would not pose any further troubles to the house.

GM, so can we say, it's done in an hour and Jayla meets the others downstairs?

Jayla: Certainly.

"Um..." Kendra looks up from her dusty tome, rather surprised by the question. "...I don't, actually. I never really saw the need for them. Why do you ask?"

Imperia's Research:
Your perusal of the Lorrimor estate's library yields the following piece of information, on top of what Kendra has already discovered...

--Exact details on the society are difficult to discern, but chief among the Whispering Way’s goals are discovering formulae for creating liches and engineering the release of the Whispering Tyrant. Agents often travel to remote sites or areas plagued by notorious haunts or undead menaces to perform field research or even to capture unique monsters. Their symbol is a gagged skull, and those who learn too many of the Way’s secrets are often murdered, and their mouths mutilated to prevent their bodies from divulging secrets via speak with dead.

This piece of information is worth 400 XP, divided amongst the party.

Once Jayla & Imperia have finished their tasks, it's time to set out for the old prison. The party leaves the Lorrimor estate on the road to the south of town. The wind seems to have died down considerably compared to last night, as the chilly air seems more content to drift about instead of blow furiously.

The green hills of Ravengro become more and more barren the further away the party gets from the town, and it isn't long before the looming corpse of a burnt-out stone wall appears on the horizon. The wall is crumbling in several places, and the eastern half of the wall appears to have been almost entirely consumed by a great sinkhole filled with scummy pond water. Vines of withered green ivy crawl all around the outer walls, and the great oaken gates of the prison are blackened and slightly ajar.

A weathered, rotted sign at the side of the road reads "HARROWSTONE PRISON."

Khardan's Perception Roll:
The wall has fallen to pieces to the southeast, where the pond is. If you can swim, that could serve as an alternative point of entry.

Otherwise, there's only one visible entrance, and that's the one before you.

F Changeling Witch (Hex Channeler) 2,

Her voice was a whisper, "The landscape of this prison is similar to that of my vision last night."

At the mention of falling gargoyles, Jayla nodded.

Looking at the gates slightly ajar, she whispered again, "Let's slip in through the gates and take the most obvious entrance. I am not a swimmer and that pond water looks diseased."

Perception through the gates: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

If the others agree with taking the obvious entrance, Jayla will slip through the gates and follow the path beside the others.
