Goodness - look at the Skeleton's initiative bonus! We were lucky with their dice rolling :)

Filiana gives horrified little cry as a skeleton rises up from the floor right in front of her. Goddess! Not again! Desperate to not be right next to the undead monstrosity, she dashes down away from the entrance. Away from the first skeleton she suddenly realises that there are more ahead of her and skids to a halt.

Do what you did before, but try to get them both at once... I don't know... can I ... Just TRY Fi!!

Pointing her hand at the nearest skeleton, she begins chanting her strange, non-words again. This time however, instead of a white beam of light, it is a fan of flames that springs forth, engulfing the two skeletons ahead of her.

Round 1 v Skeletons

Dropping his bag to the floor, Cawthorne once again draws the chained flask from his inside coat pocket. This time he opens and quaffs it's content with steady hands, then briefly shivers all over in a very animalistic manner. In the uncertain lighting the tengu suddenly appears leaner, his feathers longer and more lustrous. Grabbing his cane with both hands he steps forward alongside Imperia and menaces two of the skeletons.

"Come on, then - have at you!"

The memory of the Harrowstone fire seems to linger in these skeletons' bones--they instinctively duck and cover from the worst of Filiana's burning magic. They're still incredibly singed from the dive for cover--several of their ribs cook off and fall from their decrepit frames.

Bramwell is up!

Bramwell lingers in the pool chamber perhaps longer than he should have, once more lost in thoughts while contemplating the area and the ectoplasmic remains that soil it. By the time he moves on to join his allies in the next room, a new menace has already arisen. Stepping through the passsageway, the dhampir lifts his scythe again, but this time his target is of solid bone rather than supernatural blob.

Bramwell's scythe encounters some resistance at first, but the sheer force of his swing knocks it apart.

The skeletons swarm the party, moving with little heed for their own safety--leaving two of their number open to retaliatory strikes from Dr. Cawthorne & Khardan.

OK normally I'd just fire off my turn at this point but since Fi's actions are likely to be contingent on Kharden's and given that he is higher in the initiative than her, I will wait until he has done his thing :)

Bramwell's late arrival manages to spare him of the skeleton's attacks, but that only means that his companions take the heat instead. His initial instinct is to go help the small Filiana, but thinking again he notices how Imperia and Cawthorne ar far more outnumbered.
The little one is far more powerful than even she knows, he considers while going in the other direction. All shee needs is a trial by fire to gain some confidence, and perhaps a little aid from Khardan. He is still distracted thinking about Filiana's potential when the blade of his scyhte flies before his eyes aimlessly seeking a new target.

IF Khardan chooses not to take the attack of opportunity on the skeleton to Filiana's right OR IF he takes the AoO but fails to destroy the horror... THEN Filiana chants her strange words and once again a fan of fire springs forth from her hands, engulfing the two skeletons.

I'm going to counter with my own if/then statement. Khardan sees Cawthorne in trouble and wants to move to help. But he won't leave little Filiana alone facing several skeletons. So if his AoO destroyed Skeleton #2, he'll move ten feet north, accepting the AoO from the skeleton he passes, then attacks the skeleton to his north in an attempt to relieve Cawthorne.

If, on the other hand, his AoO didn't take out #2, he'll stay and attack again.

Filiana looks on horrified as her new friends are all some variant of harmed by the undead monstrosities. Seeing Khardan get hit more often than the others draws a cry of concern from her.

No! Help him Fi... help him! But how? Try... just try... you know... you did it once before... in the forest ... before... before they all ... just try!

Forcing herself to focus, she mutters to herself. "Okay, try and remember. The skeleton is the wolf, and Khardan is the girl." With that strange statement seeming to calm her, she raises her hand again and points at Khardan. Once again her eyes glow white and gold and once again the white tinted flame shoots forth like a lance. But this time it strikes Khardan himself on the back. For a moment the flames seem to lick at the wounds left by the skeleton's claws.

"This power of yours - these white flames - how long have you been able to generate them?" Undoubtedly of magical origin, but seemingly not from any sort of education. She seems quite devout - perhaps a gift from Pharasma? Or perhaps something inherited...

Filiana ducks her head slightly before answering the Doctor's question.

"Umm... the first time I did it was ... about ... a year ago, I think? I was with a group of ... friends... and this strange wolf attacked one of them. One of the girls. I didn't know her well and I can't even remember her name now. I didn't know I could do it. I'd made my hand glow before, but that was the only thing. And I'd been very careful never to do it again. But with the wolf, I didn't even think about it. I just pointed at it and the fire leaped out and burnt it. And then I did it again and it healed the bite on the girl. But everyone misunderstood. They thought I'd brought the wolf. It was weird, had this big hump on its back and it drooled black stuff. Anyway, everyone was scared and Addic Cruelbone was shouting that it was me, that I had done it. So I ran home. It was a difficult time.
My father had to talk a lot of people away from our door who wanted me dragged out and put on trial for witchery. I promised my parents that it was an accident and that I'd never do it again. And they believed me. They stood by me."

Now her head drops further and her eyes close at the memory.

"But sometimes... sometimes I'd catch my mother looking at me. And there would be fear in her eyes. I believe that is possibly the worst thing that ever a person can feel. That their own mother is scared of them."

She looks back up at the group, eyes full.

"And I kept my promise. I didn't let the flame out again. Well, except one time, when I was traveling with Cobble. But I was a long way from home then. About half way between there and here. And now, here, today, I have done more of this than I have ever done before. I have learned so much more about what I can do. And, I suppose, my promise is well and truly broken now."

"I don't feel any better." She does not look upset. She looks intrigued. "That's interesting. You can heal some and not others. Lord Bramwell requires a different kind of healing than you do. That's a spell I can do. It would hurt you if I cast the spell on you. I don't think you are a witch. If anyone of the group is a witch, I would be the closest. I commune with relics, and gain my skills from them. I think maybe you are are a sorcerer, oracle or shaman. If you let yourself accept what you have been given you will figure it out."

With a slightly chagrined look on her face, Filiana says "I did not know that sorcerer and witch were not just different words for the same thing. Where I come from they are both used as if they are the same. Shaman, I have never heard of at all."

She sighs...

"There seems to be so much more of the world to learn about than I thought..." she breaks off to give a small laugh. "Oh! It's just occurred to me that is almost exactly what the Professor said to me the last time I saw him."

She smiles, clearly somewhat uplifted by the thought.

"Sleep here? Are you serious?" Cawhorne waves a hand vaguely about the chamber while shaking his head. "I couldn't be tired enough to fall asleep in such a place." You could and you have, Audubon; but civilized people do not do such things! "While I can appreciate wanting to keep our gains, I think anything likely to 'take back' the ground we've won is just as likely to murder us all in the night. If we are to regroup and retire, I say we do so in safer environs.

"Ms. Albus, if you so desire you may make use of my curative draught before we depart...? " The doctor draws one the small metal vials from his belt and proffers it to the occult librarian.

Filiana looks aghast at the very suggestion of sleeping down here among the corpses.

I couldn't agree more. I couldn't sleep down here either!

Khardan looks around and shrugs. Looks like any other place to me. But I guess there is some tactical sense in retreating to a secure position.

"Alright. Let's head back to town for the night. We can start in tomorrow morning. It will give us a chance to check in on Jayla."

Exuent.

While the group discusses Filiana's powers, Bramwell keeps to himself on a dark corner of the room. Removed from the party, he seems to blend with the shadows, and he does in fact seek its comfort to grieve his wounds. He can feel his face burning from the skeleton's claw, and cannot help but wonder if his visage looks even more disfigured than usual. The taste of blood on the back of his tongue indicates that his flesh has been torn all the way to the inside of the left cheek. Bramwell breathes deeply to master the pain, and once comfortable enough to face his allies, he steps out of the darkness, the wound still bleeding. A big stain of clotting blood covering the face, neck and shoulder contrasts with his pale complexion. Bramwell makes no mention of the injury.

"Yes, yes. We do not know what else we may face, and it would be reckless to sleep here with our forces depleted. Personally, I could go on a bit longer, I suppose, but perhaps even that would be pushing our luck. Let us hope these undead creatures we destroyed are gone for good. Our efforts seem to have lasted on the upper floors, at least."

With that, the dhampir starts heading back to the hole from which they descended.

Staring at the obviously wounded and bleeding Dhampir, Filiana's hands twitch with an instinct to try and use her new power to help him. However she is held back by the memory of the recent conversation about healing. Unsure if such an attempt might not do more harm than good, she simply nods and follows Bramwell back towards the exit.

Exhausted, spent, and with a new understanding of just what manner of horrors have claimed the depths of Harrowstone for themselves, the party makes their way out of the prison's basement and out the front doors. The eerie silence filling the air does little to reassure them.

The walk back to the Lorrimor estate is a somber one, but nothing interrupts the party as they go. No monsters lurch from the ground, no cries for help are heard, not even the songs of birds overhead... just a quiet that is more commonly found in graves.

"It's too quiet. Let's get some rest, but before we do. Lord Bramwell if I may." She reaches out and touches his arm casting a spell to inflict wounds on another person. The gash on his face closes. "How are you feeling now?"

Not used to physical intimacy, Bramwell is startled to have Imperia touch him. He cringes, initially from the contact itself, and then due to the discomfort caused by the librarian's spell–for though the surge of negative energy does heal his body, it is not without pain. The relief usually associated to curative magic comes only after the gash closes, absorbing and dissipating the negative forces channeled through his body. Only when he straightens up—at least for his own standards—does it become noticeable how much more hunched over he had been standing because of his injury. "I... yes, yes. I feel much better, Miss Imperia. Thank you," he says, nodding at her.

Outside Harrowstone, Bramwell cannot help but notice the dread silence all around them. It reminds him of his own home, the blighted Bramwell Estate, a withering land where barely a cricket dares make a noise. Could it be my presence?, he wonders, before shrugging off the thought. No. I have not been here long enough. "This silence is almost unnatural," he remarks as they make their way to Kendra's home.

Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (nature) to see if this could be a naturally occurring phenomenon in Ustalav): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

Quiet since their decision to retreat from the prison, in the evening light the doctor's build and plumage once again look normal - squat and dull, respectively. Perhaps their earlier appearance was simply a trick of the shadows and his confidence in the heat of battle? Regardless, the tengu seems to come out of his thoughts at his colleagues' remarks.

"Is it? I thought it was common for a small town to be quiet. "Peaceful" I believe is the term. Though after seeing what their local landmark has to offer, I'll be surprised if anything about Ravengro proves to be normal." Too quiet - better there were howling banshees in the bushes? To think folk in Lepidstadt speak fondly of country villages such as this; one must assume they've never seen one except from the window of a coach when passing through on their way to somewhere properly civilized. Too quiet indeed!
