Eostre snorts.

"Gah, seriously Sylvia? Goblins are stupid, obnoxious and fecund little blighters. There'll always be more to slay."

"Well, cutting off the head of a snake is a tried and true method," Ekan says at the cleric's idea.

"I haven't actually gone to Magnimar yet, Fulko." Sheriff Hemlock shakes his head. "I'm just here to see to it that you were at least introduced to her." He nods at Shalelu.

Shalelu nods at Fulko, shaking his hand tentatively. She doesn't appear to be used to such contact, but she doesn't seem put off at all by it. "A pleasure, all of you."

"And Eostre would have the right of it, miss... Sylvia, was it?" Shalelu tilts her head at Sylvia. "Goblins are notorious for being all of those things, but what you say has merit, certainly. They're idiotic, borderline suicidal little bastards, but they take orders well enough--finding the one who's organizing them would go far towards neutralizing them."

"And they're incredibly vicious when left to their own devices." Shalelu's tone turns serious. "En route back to Sandpoint, I came across a goblin raid in progress--one of the farms between Nettlewood and Mosswood was attacked and burned to the ground. None of the goblins escaped, and I was able to save the family--they're staying at a nearby farm for now. The whole incident happened only a day ago."

"I've asked Shalelu to investigate the goblin threat further while I'm away at Magnimar--specifically, in the regions of Shank's Wood, Brinestump, Mosswood, Devil's Platter and Thistletop. That's where the most active goblin tribes have made their homes." Sheriff Hemlock speaks up again, folding his arms.

With that, Shalelu turns to Ameiko and taps on the bar. "Ameiko? Would you kindly dish us up some breakfast?" She turns to the party as she takes a seat at a nearby table. "I've got a lot to say, and I'd rather do so over a good meal."

Nicat grins broadly at Shalelu's last statement, rubbing his belly and saying, "I'd never have guessed you were part halfling, Shalelu, but you seem to be. No better way to chat about what's to come than over breakfast. Although I always like recalling past journeys during second breakfast. And I find by elevenses I'm ready to start thinking about grand plans for distant journeys to come. Tea time is more for contemplating short-term stuff, like what I might do tomorrow, and by the time I've had supper and and am ready for some dinner, well then I enjoy discussing..." He pauses, realizes he's rambled a bit off the mark, and says, "Right, breakfast and goblins! What have you got to tell us?"

"Brinestump?" Ilya looks surprised. "I once met a goblin named Zord who hailed from Brinestump. He was part of the Licktoad tribe, under his chieftain Gutwad. I think he planned to attack the Swallowtail Festival."

Ekan also looks confused at Ilya, but shakes his head as well, and says, "I can't speak for the others, but my family was scattered by monsters... in our case, giants," his jaw sets at some memory, "but tragedy is tragedy, and I will not abandon those other families in need or loss. Can we help these families somehow? Maybe we can raise some funds?"

"So THAT'S why you weirded out when I cast that enlargement spell on you during the battle! Gods, I'm an ass." Eostre says, facepalming with shame.

"Idiotic" Fulko begins counting on his right hand "Suicidal" His middle finger joins his pointing finger "Bastards...yes I'd say that covers a good number of the people I hunt down, small wonder I got into the goblin hunting business" Fulko laughs before listening to what else the ranger had to say.

"Breakfast would be great, and I find that am more ready for work after I've eaten"

"You read my mind, Shalelu!" Ameiko soon brings around an assortment of breakfast meals for the assembled group--while the party has been served their preferred dishes, Shalelu opts for a lighter fare of bread, vegetables and tea.

"Belor has told me you've practically been bursting with excitement at the thought of stamping out the local goblin menace." The ranger speaks up after taking a sip of her tea. "Considering what I heard from him about what happened at the Swallowtail Festival, I'm inclined to trust his judgement."

Ilya wrote:
"Brinestump?" Ilya looks surprised. "I once met a goblin named Zord who hailed from Brinestump. He was part of the Licktoad tribe, under his chieftain Gutwad. I think he planned to attack the Swallowtail Festival."

"That's basically what Belor told me, and it also supports what else I've been able to learn. There are five goblin tribes in this region, the Licktoads being one of them. They're also one of the least aggressive tribes..." She chews pensively on a carrot.

Ekan wrote:

"If you really intend to help them, doing what you can to keep the peace around Sandpoint would go a long way towards doing so." She smiles. "You made quite an impression already."

Shalelu folds her hands on the table. "Especially against the local goblin population: the goblins that attacked the farm were pretty beat up when I found them--babbling about the 'longshanks' who so utterly thrashed them. There were about five of them, and each of them bore a different tribal marking belonging to one of the five major tribes." She takes a bite of bread before continuing. "So, from what I've been able to piece together, all five goblin tribes--the Birdcrunchers, the Licktoads, the Seven Tooth tribe, the Mosswood tribe, and the Thistletops--were involved in this. Do you have any idea how difficult it is for goblins to agree on anything, much less ally themselves with other tribes?"

"If what you're implying is that the goblin activity is only a symptom of a greater problem, you're correct. While I introduced myself to an academic colleague here in town, the others apparently cleared the local cemetery of skeletons created by what I identified as a magic robe when they got back. Someone, or something, is leading them. Given that only one tomb, the tomb of the old priest, whatever his name was I'm not local, was desecrated, and that this desecration was carried out during the attack, it's likely the attack was just a cover for the desecration. Someone, or something is leading the goblins, using them as grunts to do its dirty work while it carries out some vendetta. Not sure if it's against the priest, or the church or maybe even the entire damn town, but that seems to be what the evidence suggests," Eostre rattles off matter-of-factly, not allowing anyone to interrupt her. For someone who didn't ask to be deputized she seemed to enjoy solving mysteries.

"I don't profess to be an expert on goblin-kind. But, based on what I've seen of them in combat... the words 'cooperation' and 'coordination' would hardly apply. I can only assume this is amplified between different tribes."

"How easy would it be to turn the tribes against one another?" Ilya starts absentmindedly shifting his breakfast around on the plate, separating it into five distinct sections. "I mean... we have some Licktoad weapons and armor. What if we killed off a few Birdcrunchers and left evidence of the Licktoads? Then we could take some Birdcruncher stuff and head over to the Seven Tooths, and so on."

Sylvia sits quietly, poking at her oatmeal, uncomfortable with the prospect of such large scale violence being casually bandied about the breakfast table.

"Something wrong Sylvia?" Asked Fulko after eating a whole boiled egg "Your appetite is just a strong as Nicat, but you're barely touching your food" He continued, giving his attention to the strangely silent Sylvia.

Sylvia blushes, "I should hope I don't have such an appetite! I'd never fit in my armor again!"

She then sighs, "But, yes, I am a bit bothered. This might be a horrible analogy, but bear with me. In the seminary, I studied Gozreh's teachings as well as Shelyn's. And numerous other divine teachings. But Gozreh shows us the nature of balance."

She looks around at the eyes turned to her now, "If we were to destroy all of these tribes, or send them into a war with each other, what ramifications to the local environment would there be? This sort of thing cannot be discussed so casually. Perhaps an increase in the wolf population? A very likely outcome, I think. If I'm not mistaken, goblins hate... no, despise dogs. Miss Shalelu could correct me if I'm wrong, as I do not know much about them..."

"But an increase in the wolf population would be an increased danger to livestock after they've hunted their game to the ground and start to starve. Increased attacks on outlying farms... this is something we need to be concerned with."

She turns to Eostre, "And the cause of my question. Yes, goblins are vile, nasty things. As are rats. But they are a necessity to the ecosystem. They maintain the balance. Something out there destroyed that balance, and that is what I hope to find. A way to restore the cycle. Perhaps we could even come to some sort of accord with them? Turn them to see the light and aid the town? Wouldn't that be much preferable..." she trails off as she realizes that this comment wouldn't be well accepted.

Nicat chews thoughtfully as his friends discuss the goblin situation, then takes a sip from his tea cup before offering his own notions on the matter, "It does seem something's got the goblins working together, like Eostre says. Something with some sort of weird, scary plans, if they're having gobbers attack the town so they can get up to stuff in the graveyard, like they did."

He picks up a thick strip of bacon and runs it under his nose reverently, inhaling its heady scent before taking a large biet and chewing it slowly with his eyes closed in pleasure. "Where was I? Oh, right, someone controlling the goblins. I think whether we try to come up with a scheme to set the goblins against each other, or mount up and start smashing goblin heads, or compost 'em to keep things in balance, we need to know more about who or what is behind the whole thing." He looks around the table and concludes, "So we need to focus on who's behind the gobbers, not on how to handle the gobbers themselves. But to do that we may need to start with a little goblin-stalking, and maybe we'll learn a thing or two."

Looking up at Shalelu, clearly still very impressed by her, Nicat asks, "Would you join us in checking this out a bit, maybe help us find some clues to figure out who's making the goblins work together?"

"Learning about who's behind it all? You can count me in" Announced the black haired warrior "But I don't think trying to make peace with the gobbers or ignoring them is a good idea" Fulko reached for an unclaimed chicken leg, and took a massive bite from it, his eyes more focused and less jovial than before.

"Have I ever told you how I got this pole-arm?" He paused as he took another bite from the leg "It belonged to a raider that enjoyed nothing more than running people through with it, even when there was plunder around with no one fighting back he went after the people who ran...Well to make a long story short people got sick of him and hired myself and some other hunters to take care of him and we did.Ya see, Victor wasn't someone you could talk out of something, even when his partners ran he stayed so he could keep running people through" The bone fell from his hand and into his empty plate.

"Ya can't reason with everyone, and goblins don't look like the chatty type, so I am all for turning them against each other like Ilya said" A bit of grim tone colored Fulko's voice, echoing the barely hidden serious expression that was on his face.

Eostre stares at Sylvia like she's grown a second head.

"Pfft! Are you...are you SERIOUS, Sylvia? You sound like you actually feel sorry for those wretches! The world doesn't work that way. The only thing that makes a difference isn't balance. It's power. And before you say power needs to be used responsibly, I'll say right away that's garbage. Power needs to be USED. Or else someone else will just use their power on you. You wanna try and get through to someone whose only concern is what funny sound your head'll make if they throw a rock at it or set it on fire, that's fine with me. Sylvia, you wouldn't last an hour in Riddleport before you were robbed and gutted."

A long and loud laugh rang through the tavern, as Fulko banged the table with his right hand causing the plates and mugs to shake in distress "Power needs to be used? And that is it?!" Another laugh resounded through the common room of the inn "Eostre if everyone thought the way you did, every country would be locked in a war with its neighbor, why? Because they have the power to do it" Fulko grabbed another boiled egg and flung it into his mouth.

"Sometimes the threat of using power is enough, power isn't infinite, you use your power today and you may not be rested to face the tougher challenges to come" Fulko turned his eyes towards the dwarven wizard "Now don't get me wrong I think these goblins are only good to fill my pouch with gold, but if that is your reason for wanting to kill'em, just hope that one day you won't fall under the mercy of someone who thinks the same way you do...and don't tell me that wouldn't happen because you'd be prepared, we all have times in our lives when we aren't" Fulko grabbed a glass of water and chugged it down in a few loud gulps.

"I have strong doubts the goblins will seek peace, and frankly, I doubt if WE have the right to try to declare it. Can we really expect the people of Sandpoint to embrace their enemies after the harm done?"

Sylvia blinks at Eostre, surprised at her vehemency, "I can't argue with you, since your views clearly are so ingrained by your life in Riddleport that there's no changing them. But the world itself does not work on power. Riddleport does, from what I hear in your voice, but the world does not work off of power. If that were so, Fulko would be correct. Every fief, every country, every nation would be at constant war. We would not be worried right now with goblins so much as Cheliax slavers coming into town..."

She looks somewhat confused, "I don't know why you would think such a thing of the world, to be honest. Much of it is truly run on love and respect for each other. Look around you, at your comrades. Does one hold sway over the others from a position of power? Does the mayor here control the daily lives of the people of Sandpoint with an iron fist? No, we are united by common goals, friendship, respect. Your idea of power has nothing to do with how the world works. I thought you more learned than that."

She sighs, then, at a loss of words and just shakes her head slowly, "I truly feel sorry for you, Eostre, Cyphermage of Riddleport. I can only pray to Shelyn that the scales fall from your eyes before it is too late."

Eostre goes a little pale at Fulko's words.

"I...I already have met someone like that. That's why I'm here."

She gets a very haunted look on her face and starts looking over her shoulder before she catches herself and looks forward.

Shalelu (and the rest of the patrons at the Rusty Dragon, incidentally) watches the drama amongs the party unfold without a word. While the stoic ranger doesn't appear to be particularly fazed by the tensions and emotions running high at the table, everyone else is looking at them with looks ranging from confusion to irritation. Even Ameiko, approaching with a refill for one of the party's drinks, is watching them with a wary eye.

"*ahem* If I could perhaps bring this conversation back on topic..." Shalelu breaks the silence after taking a sip of her tea.

"We can worry about the moral ramifications of dealing with the goblin threat later. Let's focus on the here and now." She sets her teacup down. "I'm not entirely sure trying to turn them against each other would be the most practical course of action. Certainly, in any other circumstances, I would enjoy employing such a strategy." Shalelu nods. "But right now, doing so when Belor has taken some of his men to Magnimar would leave Sandpoint's watch undermanned. I wouldn't be at all surprised if, while you were out trying to undermine the alliances between the tribes, a larger force than the one that attacked the town during the festival arrived early."

Her eyes turn cold and hateful. "In fact, I'll wager that's what they're waiting for now. The goblins have a bugbear tracker in their employ--goes by the name of Bruthazmus. How the goblins managed to secure his loyalty is anyone's guess, but he's keeping his eye on the town. I know it--I've clashed with him on my way back here."

DC 12 Knowledge (Local):
Bugbears are hulking, brutish goblinoids with milky-white eyes, with more muscle mass in one arm than most goblins have in their entire bodies.

DC 17 Knowledge (Local):
Bugbears are unnervingly good at remaining unseen when they wish to be so, and Bruthazmus is no exception. The bugbear sometimes visits the five goblin tribes to trade goods he's raided from merchant caravans, and he has a burning hatred for elves.

Nicat's eyes bounce back and forth like the balls in a child's pin-board game as his friends debate the philosophy of goblin-hating, the dynamics of power, and the way the world works. When Shalelu breaks into the conversation and mentions Bruthazmus, the little halfling's face turns pale. "A BUGBEAR?" he cries out, "Now that's a whole different story! I've never seen one, but I've heard about them, with their weird milky eyes, can't even tell if they're lookin' at you! And they're huge and strong, could squish a goblin's head with one hand like a a horse steppin' on a grape!"

He turns to look at Shalelu once again, saying, "You clashed with him? You actually fought this thing?" His eyes go wide as he considers this, and he's clearly even more impressed with Shalelu than he was before.

"Alright so if we are going to continue our guardsman career who's going to hunt down the goblins then? And lets not forget we still need to find out who's leading them and what are they up to; what happened at the graveyard made no sense, and I ain't planning to leave it at that" Too curious to let it go He added mentally before obliterating all the meat of the chicken leg, distributing the bone next to the one on his plate and reaching for his now filled mug of water.

The Last Thing Goblins Never See | Jade Regent Portrait

Sorry for taking so long to post--was busy looking for a supervisor for my honours thesis and taking time off to enjoy my birthday. We now return to your regularly scheduled Rise of the Runelords! :)

Fulko's Knowledge Roll (Bugbear Lore):
Bugbears, for the most part, are loners by nature. It's not uncommon for them to band together in small groups to terrorize human settlements or to be found working for goblin tribes as elite guards or executioners. They don't form societies of their own--they prefer to work alone to maximize the level of terror and menace they can inflict on innocents.

Ilya wrote:
"Bruthazmus," Ilya tries the name out. "Sounds plenty menacing. Where did you face him?"

"Not long after I saved the family from Mosswood." Shalelu says, her face darkening. "Was nearly the end of me--I managed to plant a couple of arrows in his knees before I escaped." She gestures to several spots on her armour--they're spattered with what appears to be inky black blood. "Bruthazmus hates elves as much as I hate him and all his kind."

"Still, I managed to learn who he's working for--the bastard has an ego the size of Magnimar. He kept gloating that the other goblin 'heroes' wouldn't ever be able to match him once he takes my ears." Shalelu leans back in her seat. "He's currently working for Chief Ripnugget--newest leader of the Thistletop goblin tribe."

Awesome, glad we're back. Happy Birthday!

Nicat considers this a moment, then says, "Well, if the Thistletop tribe has a new leader, and a bugbear buddy, maybe we should start by paying them a visit. Either this Ripnugget is behind all the goblin organization that's been happening, or he knows who is."

"Ripnugget would be the best lead, certainly. Of all the other chieftains, he's the only one with the resources to organize this..." Shalelu leans forward in her seat.

"There are a few other chieftains in the area, but they're either too cowardly, lazy or busy to try attacking Sandpoint. Firstly, there's Big Gugmut--an abnormally large & muscular goblin who leads the Mosswood tribe. Had a hobgoblin for a mother and a boar for a father, if you believe the rumours." She snorts. "Koruvus, the chief of the Seven Tooth tribe, apparently went and got himself killed before the raid on the town, and Rendwattle Gutwad of the Licktoads is too busy feuding with the goblin cannibal Vorka to commit much of his underlings to this."

"I'm planning on scouting their territory some more once we're done here--Devil's Platter, Brinestump, Mosswood, Shank's Wood & Thistletop." She looks the party over again. "Think you can keep Sandpoint safe until Belor and I come back? I'll have more information on Thistletop for you by the time I return."

Nicat's eyes brighten with excitement as he hears about the goblin chieftains and imagines himself heroically defeating them. "Gugmut - big and muscular - huh! He's nothin'!" he whispers to himself, "Gutwad, no problem, an' the cannibal too!"

He looks up suddenly as Shalelu finishes speaking, saying, "Right. Stay here, right. We stay here, while you go check out the goblins, I knew that." Standing up a bit straighter, he says, "Of course we can keep Sandpoint safe! You've nothing to fear when your faithful deputies are on watch, Sheriff!"

"Bugbears are loners, they do work with goblins sometimes but not in big numbers" Answered Fulko before returning his attention to the conversation at hand "Cut your ears off? Hah, I'd like to see him do that after I rip off his arms and give his name to whatever weapon he wields" Fulko unleashed one of his loud laughs, then turned his attention to Shalelu "I can continue my career as guard till you and the sheriff come back, but I'll expect an increase in my pay before I return to being a bounty hunter sheriff" Continued Fulko, as he smiled to the sheriff.

"After we take care of Ripnugget, do you think you can show me where the other goblins live? We can split the bounty between us, and with more blades on your side you're bound to kill more of them" Suggested Fulko to the elven ranger, his voice in between joviality and seriousness.

The monk gives Fulko silent thanks for the information and muses what everyone is saying
"It sounds like we have the beginnings of a plan," Ekan nods, "I'll help, of course."

"Ripnugget's new to the job?" Ilya looks left, then right, then straight up for some reason. "How new, exactly? And what happened to the previous chieftain of the Thistletop?"

A wolfish grin materialized across Fulko's lips as he turned his attention towards the previously silent dwarf "whenever one of my targets end up dead, and if they happen to have a weapon that I want, I give that weapon the same name...I did it to get a good laugh at first, and it hasn't stopped being funny yet" Fulko drained the mug of the water it contained and then he placed on the table.

"Any places you want us to focus on guarding sheriff?"

Sylvia just nods slowly, "We'll do the best that we can in regards to defending Sandpoint, but I do hope that our services do not need to be turned to again. I only hope for a peaceful return for everyone. But for now, I need to head over to the cathedral and see if Father Zantus has any need of me. Then I think I'll check out the market, and see if any new pieces have been done. There was a beautiful piece of the sun just hovering over the bay the day before the attack. I hope it's still there!"

"I...I think I need to lay down for a bit."

"Perhaps." Shalelu smirks.

Ilya wrote:

"I've only heard of him a couple of months ago." Shalelu folds her hands on the table. "If I had to guess, he got the job the old-fashioned way--killing the old one."

"Nothing really comes to mind--just make a few patrols around town and listen to whatever concerns the townsfolk bring up." Sheriff Hemlock finally speaks up. "Sandpoint's citizens are well-behaved, mostly."

Ameiko looks over at Eostre, concern present on her face. "Feeling alright? It's not something in the food, is it?" She glances at the dishes in front of the party.

Ekan also looks concerned for Eostre, "Perhaps at least a chair..." If she doesn't have one, he tries to find one and set it nearby for her.

"I should say not," Ilya responds. "And a good thing too! Could you imagine the mess it would make, having a full sized bugbear tramping around in the inn? It would be a disaster."

"Lady Shalelu, I'm more than a little concerned about letting you run off on your own, after this monster so nearly made an end of you. Wouldn't it be better if we accompanied you into the wild a ways... at least until we can line up a crossbow bolt or two for this Bruthazmus."

"Uh, Eostre?" Nicat asks, confusion and concern in his voice, "What's wrong? Who's not here?"

"Tammerhawk!" she snaps. Then she catches herself and realizes what she's just let slip. Eostre takes a deep breath and straightens out her hair and clothes.

My past isn't your concern, Nicat."
