It is currently in late autumn right after the events of the first book.

Our adventure begins on the Almoth plain near Toman Head. Your inside a tavern in a small village called Valbrin. You stopped in for a drink and a meal during your travels and you happen to overhear and old farmer telling a tale to the patrons at the tavern.

"Fell beast they were" the balding farmer explains to the crowd, his rheumy eyes wide as saucers and red from an evening's hard drinking. "A dozen of 'em, all big as my prize bull, with slaverin' fangs and breath as hot as the dark one's own forge. There I was starin' right into the face of the leader as he glares at me with his foul yellow eyes...til he took one look at my crossbow, and turned tail and ran. My shot caught 'im right in the rump, but it was just a sting to such a monster. He just kept runnin' and by time I could reload my crossbow he and the others had vanished into mist."

The other patrons of this cozy village tavern-local craftsmen and peasants from the outlying farms-laugh and raise their mugs to the old timer. "A great story, Tay!" one young man calls out from a table near the entrance. "Tell us the on about the giant cave monster next."

The old man rises up and shakes his fist at the young man "Mock me if ye will, lad, but I seen that one too." he protests "Twas taller than your rooftop, if it were afoot." The crowd roars with laughter again. "Hey, Douthit, maybe it was the giant monster who is killing your sheep." another young lad call out.

Suddenly, a stout man in a blacksmiths apron rises from his seat, and pounds his table with his mug. The laughter quickly settles down as the crowd turns their attention towards this man. "All right you lot, Tay's visions may have more to do with blackberry brandy than giant monsters. But we're losing livestock to these wolves. It's time we put a stop to this, and quickly. Any suggestions? There is a moment of silence as everyone in the room contemplates what to do.

Chard sits down at a table were he can hear the farmer. He flags down one of the serving girls and orders some food and ale. While waiting for his food Chard tries to place the beast as anything he might know.

You figure it's probably wolves but wolves wouldn't be hunting human livestock unless something forced them out of their hunting ground.

Anyone thinking of taking wolfbrother?

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

crossed my mind

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

Nope

Ryer takes a seat at a table where a few men are gambling, within sight and sound of the farmer. He begins to play dice with them so that it is not apparent he is eavesdropping

I'm not sure what kind of gambling game this is but I'm assuming its some kind of 2d6 highest roll or targeted number or something
2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9

Edited to fix Italics, sorry :(

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

Moves to the table were the farmers were sitting at Excuse me gentlemen it sounds like you all are having a problem. I could look into it for you

The big man with the Blacksmith's apron looks at you "You volunteering to go hunt some wolves? We cant afford to pay you much coin..." he says

M Domani Armsman 1

Lonen looks up from his ale and snickers, "Wolves as big as a bull? You could swap tales with those Hunters that left this morning. I bet each one you ask will have seen one twice as big with thrice the number."

He looks as Chard walks up and offers aid and shakes his head. "A waste of time, I'd think. Probably a couple half-starved wolflings what won't survive the winter."

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

shakes his head Wolves shouldn't be here or at less not this close to man. something is driving them here thats what i will hunt.

M Domani Armsman 1

The man with the light green eyes looks at the speaker with an appraising expression. He strokes his mustache absently for a moment before responding.

"You... you seem like you may be speaking from a place of knowledge rather than of fear or braggarty. What would be driving wolves out of their homes, pray tell."

His left hand falls to his side to rest on the pommel of a well worn leather wrapped hilt.

Drawing a deep pull from his roll of tabac, Gjurn blows it out, grunting.
Well, ive always wanted a cloak made out of wolf's fur. He says to no one in particular.

Approaching the two men talking, he holds out his hand. Well met. Names Gjurn. Gjurn Swurn. I'd like to accompany the both of you on this. This feller's tale has piqued my curiosity, and I would like to see where this path takes me. Perhaps it will lead me to the Horn, perhaps not. Either way, I may be of use to those who walk in the Light of the Creator.

M Human 1st level wilder

DM, any chance you could open a discussion posting page for us?

Done

The man with the blacksmith's apron nods. "Like I said we can afford to pay little coin but if you ever need anything fixed you can come to my place and I will do so at no charge." he says.

"Also you rooms and your meals are on the house" says the innkeeper.

The man in the apron nods in thanks to the innkeeper. He gives each of you a good handshake."I'm Barton Stenker the town blacksmith's and sometimes mayor."

M Domani Armsman 1

Lonen shakes hands with Gjurn and the blacksmith and extends his hand to Chard as well. Despite his elegant clothing and fine features his grip is strong with calluses along the inside of his hand, "Lonen Tendain. Onetime merchant guardsman, currently wandering in search of work, wine and women."

He turns to Gjurn and grins, "A Hunter are you? I briefly traveled with a pack of them until today. You seem more down to earth than those fellows, though."

M Human 1st level wilder

Scratching at his chin while inhaling a deep pull of tabac, he grins at Lonen.
Yeah, there was a lot of "interesting" characters in Illian to swear the Oath to Hunt the Horn. Everyone having an idea as to where to look. Tar Valon, Tear, Illian itself. Heck, i even met a group of people who were going to infiltrate Shara of all places.
Taking another pull, holding it in for a long moment, and then blowing it out into the air, Gjurn continues.
But for myself, I will take what you say as a compliment.
Nodding to Lonen, Gjurn turns and speaks loudly to the farmer.
Good sir. Would you be able to take my companions and I to your farm? I would like to inspect your farm, and perhaps hope to pick up the trail of these frightful animals. The sooner we get to work, the more livestock we may save. Wont you agree?

The drunken storyteller nods "Aye I show ye you were I seen 'em and then you can show everyone I aint crazy!." he starts to get up but stumbles a bit.

"It's getting a bit late better I take you in the morning" he says

The men laugh "He does have a point, you've only a few hours of sunlight left. Best you get a fresh start in the morning." says Barton.

M Human 1st level wilder

Gjurn eyes harden at the drunk farmerThe Creator shall protect those that walk in the Light. I shall be fine. I have no need to fear of things in the darkness. Looking about the rest of the room for a moment, meeting the eye of everyone there, he focuses back upon the farmer.
Besides, I doubt that you wish to loose any more livestock. I hear that a pack of a dozen wolves can tear through a pack of sheep within an hour. Would hate to come to your farm tomorrow and see you penniless.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

Looks at Gjurn and lonen then the farmers I am Chard Meyer. Hunting at night has its advantages as well as disadvantages. Wolves like to hunt at night it might be useful to go tonight

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

Ryer rolls his eyes.

Light, Chard! Do you always have to get us involved with strangers? I suppose it's too late now. At least he was tactful enough not to mention shadowspawn; last time they thought we were Darkfriends...

Ryer grumbles at his losing streak, yet continues to play, waiting for the group to make a decision...

"Al'ight, I can take ye to were I spotte' the beasts." says old man Tay. "Come one then." he gets up and walks out followed by those interested.

It's a 3 miles walk to Tay's pastures from the village. The pastures are fairly unremarkable: a patch of rolling grassland criss-crossed with muddy tracks of cattle and sheep. Since the animals have been moved to the village's communal pastures for the night, there seems to be little to see here, but Tay wobbles forward pointing to a low area between two hills.

"That's were it happened," he mumbles his breath sour from the night's excesses. The carcass of the dead sheep has been removed, but some bits of fur and skin, along with a mishmash of tracks and scuffmarks, remain.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

looks around for signs of the beasts

spot: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

You do find some wolf tracks in the area. Contrary to the story they seems to be regular sized wolves.

Make a wilderness lore check to track them.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

wilderness lore: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

You find the tracks but they aren't very fresh. You lose the trail on the edge of the forest.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

They went into the forest we can see if I can pick their trail up again a little ways in

You venture into the forest to try and find more tracks to find the wolves.

You search for hours not finding their trail and it's getting dark when you come across a large carcass out in the woods. It's badly mangled but as you get closer you recognize it as a cave bear. You see some wolf tracks around the carcass, look like the wolves feed on the carcass but some of the wounds on this bear were certainly not made by wolves and wolves don't generally attack bears when there's sheep around.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

looks closer at the wounds to determine what caused them

knowledge nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

M Domani Armsman 1

Lonen follows the rest of the group out into the wilderness. When they come across the bear his eyes widen. "Now there's a big fellah to have gone down by wolves. Doubt they brought it down on their own. What else out here can drag down a bear?

Chard doesn't know what could have caused the wounds. Whatever it was it had claws and was about as big as the bear. You don't see any print here that don't belong to either the wolves or the bear so the bear must have fought the creature somewhere else and either died of it's wounds or was finished off by the wolves.

I was starting to think chard was the only one still playing

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

I work on weekends, sorry. Also I'm not used to pbp much, Chard and I are both from the same nation/unit, but interacting with him semi-real-time story wise is proving difficult, I'll just go more solo.

Ryer reluctantly follows Chard, a bit agitated that he's drug some stranger's along.

Lonen wrote:

Ryer hesitantly replies:

Perhaps, something...... bigger, than a bear...?

M Human 1st level wilder

99% of the time i wont post on the weekend, as i am busy with other things. I do my postings while im on my breaks at work.

Leaning on his pike, Gjurn surveys the scene. Blood and Ashes! Bigger than a bear? bah, The only thing bigger than a bear is those shadow-cursed Trollocs. But those things are kept in the Blight by the Borderlands. There hasnt been one of those down here since the Trolloc Wars. No, I think it must be another bear in the area. Bears will drive a pack of wolves, especially if it kills enough of them.

Looking skyward, he grunts Hmmf, its getting to be night time. I say lets setup camp for the night and continue in the morning.

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

Ryer looks around at the silent party.

Well, come on! Are we going to stand out here all night! Light, you people...

Ryer passes a glance at Chard

I don't know about you, but I have the feeling this is NOT the place to set up camp. There was a nice clearing a few dozen spans back, did you see it? Lets go there...

M Human 1st level wilder

indeed. someplace defensible. Would hate to have something that took this bear out come upon our camp.

You go back a small ways and find a good little clearing were you can make camp. You make a fire set up some tents. Decide on a watch during the night and get some rest to resume the hunt in the morning.

M Domani Armsman 1

Lonen begins setting up for the night. He waters and brushes his horse before tying her to a nearby tree then spreads out his bedroll. He sits and draws his curved blade across his knees and begins running a whetstone along its edge.

He watches the other men go about their business. "Mind if I take the first watch? I'm not much of an early sleeper."

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

I will take the third watch

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

Right then, I guess I'll take second. Wake me when you're tired.

Ryer sets up his bedroll and goes to sleep.

M Human 1st level wilder

I guess i get to sleep the entire night. Gjurn chuckles out loud.
Should you need assistance on any shift, wake me up first.

After laying out his bedroll, Gjurn gathers some twigs and starts a small fire. He then goes about gathering larger items that are dry.

Should anything happen, i think being able to see the threat should be the priority. So, shout a lot but be sure to throw this on the flames.

Gentlemen, may the Creator watch over your dreams, and the Light always be within your heart, for with the Creator, you are always in the light. Gjurn says to everyone before laying atop his bedroll.

The night is uneventful and the forest is quiet. You rest takings turns.
Chard seems to twist and turn in his sleep and wakes up for his turn early. (see private message).

But otherwise nothing unusual happens and morning comes.

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

Hey everyone, it's morning.
Ryer attempts to rouse the rest of the party
We should go take a look at the bear, if it's even there still. Perhaps we might spot something we didn't last night...

M Human 1st level wilder

i was certain that we wouldve been attacked

Gjurn stands up and builds up the fire.
How bout some breakfast first? he asks Ryer.

gjurn sets to making breakfast for everyone. a simple fair, consisting of a little bit of everything from everyone.
after everyone has had some food and filled up with water, GJurn packs up his belongings and makes for the trail, carrying his pike lengthwise.

M Domani Armsman 1

"Good idea. Maybe we can even find tracks from whatever did it in."

Lonen gathers his gear and mounts up. He hums a quiet tune to himself as they ride.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

nods tiredly as he packs his gear

Male Human Borderlander (Saldaea) Wanderer 1

In his saddle and ready, Ryer looks at Chard, who seems a bit sluggish.

You alright there Chard? A couple of owls spook you while sleeping?
Ryer chuckles.

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

Just some strange dreams

You find the bear corpse again. You could follow the tracks the wolves left after they finished picking at the corpse or you could follow the bear's tracks to see were it came from.

Dc 15 wilderness lore to track the wolves. Dc 10 to track the bear.

M Domani Armsman 1

"Let's see where this bear came from. Perhaps we'll find more clues as to what killed it.'

Male Borderlander (Saldaean) Woodsman lv1

Agreed. chard leads the group along the bear's trail
wilderness lore: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

You travel into the forest going in the direction the bear came from.

You travel north for a while when up ahead lies a long stony ridgeline, and atop it is a distinctive spire of stone. The bear tracks seems to be leading up to it.
