Ripping away the mirror from the bartender's grasp, Lanuola begins wordlessly mouthing her surprise as she examines every inch of her flattened face. How is this possible? C'rtainly I am dreaming. Prithee alloweth me waketh! The arrival of more strange looking patrons nearly convinced her of this fact, outright though. Wheeling around feverishly, she began addressing the whirlwind of concern and perceived insults thrown in her direction, turning first toward the two legged canine.

"I didst not ref'r to thee as a beast, I spake the w'rd 'be' in ref'rence to myself. Though f'rgive mine own bluntness, art thee not a dogman of s'rts?"she points a thin finger towards Yeldrid,

"Are you two of a kindred race?" Her speech was flustered and quick, hiding no edge of her panic.

"Regardless, I am NOT a painting. At least I wasn't at each moment past. Something hast gone h'rribly wrong. This wast to beest a temp'rary measureth to protecteth mine own family from an invading f'rce. We w're to beest smuggl'd out magically in the shapeth of framed paintings. Her thoughts began to wonder as all of her past came rushing back to her. Despite feeling like she should be in the throes of tears, her eyes were dry can be. Am I to be denied drops of sorrow as well? Is this hell?

"Please, I needeth to speaketh with the recently depos'd L'rd Bancroft.I'm sure that mine own fath'r drumm'd up substantial supp'rt to aid in retaking our home. He shall knoweth what hast did occur. I am eke NOT curs'd...I can't beest..." Taking a moment to steady herself against a nearby table to better digest her circumstances, she was made readily aware of how little she actually weighed now. Her limbs moved with without much resistance though she could feel her strength was much lesser than normal as if she'd struggle greatly to move the small table she leaned against.

"At the v'ry least, may I knoweth wh're I am? Who is't art all of thee?' I am Kamali'l wahine Lanuola Bancroft."

Boy this was weird to watch. She was alive in a since. She moved about as a regular person would. But her flimsy, 2D body sometimes flipped and folded to indicate depth. Most disconcerting was that the canvas seemed to dissipate and reform a mere centimeter from her colored form. As she moved it appeared she was moving across an enormous invisible canvas that only appeared when she was over it. Imperfections and rough spots on the canvas passed across her arms and face as she moved them about. And her accent was hard to follow.

"No you said beest. Never mind," he says, shaking his head. It was unimportant comparatively. He ignores the dogman comment completely. Corgyn did not like to discuss their...creation. When she draws a comparison between himself and Yeldrid, he looks affronted. "Kindred. Well now you're just being mean."

At the end of her story/introduction, Rex is just as confused as the villagers around him. "Well. I am Rex. And it is a pleasure to meet you," says, striking his breastplate with a fist and bowing. "Unfortunately, I'm not from around here. Does anyone know the name Bancroft or about an invasion?" he says looking around the room.

Yeldrid, somewhat downcast, says, "Ma'am, this cat doesn't even know what their kindred is...but I think Rex and I are different. I think." Yeldrid squints towards Rex and shakes his head. "Yeah, nah, we're different. I was right the first time."

Yeldrid then taps the floor again with the toe of his boot, "No idea what a 'Bancroft' is. Sounds like a weed."

"But ah...I'm Yeldrid Thozosh. Alchemist, apothecary, inventor, blacksmith, hair stylist, tool repaircat, bounty hunter and gunsmith. And welcome to Barlily! It's a right good place. People wear lilypads and it's unusually moist."

"And I am Isamu," Isamu says, bowing to the odd person. He decides now is not the best time to deal with his family name's positioning. "And I fear, Lady Bancroft, if I guess right, that you are very far from your home. Never have I heard any speak as you do in my travels, though those have not been so many as I might wish."

"However, may I assure you that you are not without aid. I think you shall find Barlily a welcoming place, though perhaps... unable to aid in quite the way you wish."

I love the description Rex

Despite the terrifying and embarrassing situation she found herself in, Lanuola discovered some modicum of comfort in the introductions of her new companions. Formal etiquette had always provided a calming effect and so she attempted to curtsy after each one, but she was uncertain of how it looked given her 2D form or even if the process held the same meaning in this strange city of...Barlilly. Nev'r has't i hath heard of such a landeth. Who is't rules h're? i wilt speaketh with a figure of auth'rity, 'r at the v'ry least, p'rhaps someone who is't couldst holp fixeth this travesty.

Turning to Isamu, Lanuola swallows her fear and pride attempting keep her voice steady.
"i might not but admiteth yond thy language sounds strange to mine own hearing, though i can seeth how tis not dissimilar." She found that making small talk helped somewhat distract from the fact that she no longer existed in three dimensions. Addressing the assorted group before her, she made the most dignified plea she could manage despite the shock.

"Now, I am loath to asketh a fav'r of such new acquaintance but i am lacking in both cater-cousins and solutions. I require thy assistance in resolving mine own current circumstances. 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 1 + 2 = 191d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 1 + 2 = 22

After training, Lily Shadow makes her way to her hideout. She knows the Writhing Woods well, and it is only early twilight as she draws near the treefort, having taken special shortcuts to shorten the travel time. The forest is quiet, though, and something feels off to her.

She is about twenty feet from the tree when she hears a twig snap.

Through one of the eyes in the back of her head, she sees an arrow come zooming towards her. In front of her, a scrawny, wiry gray-skinned creature covered in small scars pounds into the mossy earth. It wears a shabby sheepskin cowl with a dangling liripipe. The gangle growls and brandishes a wickedly notched curved sword. "Lily Shadow," it hisses. "You chose the wrong sunset to come to our neck of the woods."

Lily recognizes this orc—this is Sturgle, a cowardly killer who only ever fights an enemy it's sure is outnumbered. Sturgle is usually seen traveling with Stragle, an even more cowardly killer who rarely leaves its tree in a fight except to run away. She can see the archer lurking up in a tree behind her, obscured by shadows and foliage.

Longbow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15 If that hits your flat-footed AC, you take 1d8 ⇒ 7 damage.

Map is linked in my profile. The tree outlined contains your treefort (you don't think they're aware it's there—they just happened to block your path by bad luck). The southern G is the archer, who is ten feet off the ground in a tree.

The bartender folds his arms crossly. "If you're asking if we have a lord or such, no, we don't. Barlily pays the odd tithe whenever soldiers of a king pass through, but that's more a matter of humoring folk with swords than thinking they're of any concern. Never heard of 'Bancroft'. The lady who owns this pub's the one who gave me, erm, you, and she just said it was something fine to give us some 'class'. Didn't say where she'd got it. I..." He scratches his back. "Well..." Isamu pursues his lips, thinking. "Actually, we were planning a long journey. If we don't have any better clues, perhaps you could come with us? You'd have a better chance of finding some clue as to where your home is on the move than staying here, I suspect."

Lily watches the arrow thud into her armor with a twang, knocking her temporarily off balance. Good thing the armor held up. She looks around a moment, taking in the scene and formulating a plan.

"You'll need more cronies than Stragle if you want to best Lily Shadow, villain!" Lily turns around, and rushes towards the tree; drawing her rapier in the process. With a little spring she scampers up the trunk, coming to rest next to the cowardly orc. She places the tip of her rapier to his throat. "Give up, and I'll let you leave!"

Sturgle begins to sweat, beady eyes watching the point of the rapier intently. "I...I..."

Its face turns into a mask of impotent rage. "One of these days, an' I bet it's gonna be soon, you're gonna get in over your head. 'Specially with where sthings's heading. C'mon, Stragle! We gotta catch up with the rest. She ain't worth it."

The gangle runs up and scales a tree, and the pair climb rapidly away from Lily's hideout.

Something about it strikes Lily as odd. Stragle and Sturgle don't usually travel with the other roaming packs of orcs in the Writhing Woods—Sturgle has abandoned his comrades too many times in the face of danger to not be killed on sight. What did Sturgle mean by "catch up with the rest"?

She slings her shield across her back, then quickly runs to stow her basket under a bush, marking it so she can find it later, then heads off after the two orcs. At least these two are good for something. Lily thinks to herself, as she follows along stealthily from the brush. They're mostly harmless in small groups, but a band of gangles could threaten the town. I hope they hurry. Anna remains on the lookout, silently urging the two stooges to move along.

"She doesn't spend much time here," the bartender says. "She's a hunter, you see. I think she spends most of her time at the lodge across the Writhing Wood."

Knowledge (history) and Knowledge (nobility) could apply, yes. It would be a difficult check, though. Aside from that, where to next?

Lily Shadow:
Lily Shadow trails after the two brachiating orcs, a shadow behind gangling shadows. After about half an hour of climbing, the gangles begin to slow. Lily sees three other gangles approaching from the north. The five converge atop a massive maple, each taking one bough to perch on like spiderous gargoyles.

They begin to speak to one another in the sibilant tongue of the orcs—unfortunately, a language Lily Shadow has never been able to master.

Yeldrid, which one are we doing again?" he asks, turning to the Catfolk. He then freezes for a few seconds. Only his ears and nose move. He takes a sniff, then another, and begins sniffing around the general area. His nose eventually leads him to Baylily. "Who's this? New friend? She smells like...a summer day...after a rain. "Mine own apologies. Thee giveth me aid and i react as a petulent issue would. I would beest joyous to accompany thee all f'r the foreseable future. At least until we meeteth with this establishment's patron. I greatly appreciate thy kindness"

"And if 't be true t would not beest too much effort, i concur yond travel by boat may prove moo dangerous some of us than others.Either way, we shouldst maketh haste. I've did delay us enow with mine own concerns."

Taking a few steps forward, she straightened up and put on a brave face to try and hide her inner concerns. Though this was slightly undermined by faltering steps as she'd yet to fully grasp walking in her new state. Almost everything about her had become alien in nature. She wasn't even sure if she could still be considered a person, technically speaking.

She hopes her mother isn't worried—as a grown adult, this is far from the first time Zyxebrax has spent a night away from home, but generally she gives better notice than this beforehand. But it's clear that there's something serious going on here. Zyxebrax will have to wait.

Lily is distracted by her thoughts, and only notices the unfamiliar figure when it has grabbed onto a tree branch above her. A gangle is climbing over her treehouse. Ms. Weaver raises an eyebrow. "I wonder...Wiski, have you still got that elven device?"

The bartender grimaces. "First you take my painting, now that? Oh, fine." He raises a hand to get the party's attention. "A few years back, during the Harvest Festival, an elf showed up from the thicket carrying a strange invention of hers. She let me hang onto it, since apparently she liked the way I mixed a scotch. It's a sort of protective shield that might be of use to you. I s'pose I could sell it to you. Is five gold coins reasonable?"

"I don't know if it's magic. It works, is all I know." Wiski turns and heads into the back room, where he presumably sleeps. He comes back out with a curious hooked cane covered in blue-and-silver silk, holding it up to Lanuola. "I've never seen it malfunction, though it seems to dislike a strong wind."

Yeldrid realizes that the device has a latch at the base where the silk can be unfurled. Unfurling it reveals a protective dome supported by wooden ribs—a silken canopy clearly meant to deflect falling rain.

She has never seen them collaborating like this before. Usually, the gangles are fairly shortsighted, seeking their own advancement at all turns. What could they be looking for that has them so motivated to climb for hours on end without rest?

Tentatively, Lanuola took the device and looked it over. It's odd shape and mechanics were one of the strongest pieces of evidence that she was truly far from home. She had never seen it's ilk before but was grateful if the device could indeed protect her from the harshness of the weather which she had found she was now utterly helpless against.

When they had tested her hair, she had been concerned with the loss, even if it was only a few strands. There was very little of her left to begin with, and the evidence of her new watery aversion did not improve her mood.

Though the helpfulness of her new companions was a silver lining she desperately needed at the moment. P'rhaps with their assistance i might actually returneth to mine own previous f'rm Lanuola turned to the bartender slowly and responded reluctantly. Having no money to pay her for desires was an uncommon and frankly uncomfortable position for her to find herself.

"While i truly appreciateth the off'r, i'm afraid i've nay funds upon mine own p'rson. P'rhaps thee couldst selleth the pieces of mine own frameth? if 't be true gold holds sway in these lands as thee did indicate, the molding on mine own frameth possesseth nay bawbling grise of t. Wouldst this suffice?"

Lanuola shifted awkwardly towards the others and tried to instill a positive tone. P'rhaps if 't be true i pretendeth liketh nothing is strange then 'twill improveth mine own humor

"Regardless, i doth not wisheth to detain us any furth'r. Alloweth us proce'd."

The bartender shifts. "It's not your frame," he mutters under his breath, but waves his hand in a very-well manner.

Ready to move on to the forest?

Rex hopes on all fours when he finally sees germ hiding behind Baylily. Both ears are up suggesting curiosity rather than threat. He inches forward, sniffing as he goes. He then jumps back without warning, reeling back onto two legs. "He does not smell as pleasant. You are welcome to come by all means just...if he could stay down wind that would be nice."

Yeldrid realizes that the device has a latch at the base where the silk can be unfurled. Unfurling it reveals a protective dome supported by wooden ribs—a silken canopy clearly meant to deflect falling rain.

Upon unfurling the device, Rex bolts on all four for the cover of the nearest table. He peeks out and barks several times in his own language which known have yet to grasp. Then he remembers to speak common. "What is that? I do not like it. Please out it away."

Zyxebrax struggles to think what the gangles could be searching for so furvently in the middle of the night.

If she doesn't think of anything, she'll start looking for it herself; wandering the hillside looking for something interesting. If she does think of something, she'll also look for it.

Yeldrid stares at the device, looks at the bartender, looks at the painting lady, and then at Rex. He has an incredulous expression on his face.

It's a canopy. On a stick. We used to make similar things to provide back home. Except bigger and made to be stationary, constructed from stitched alpaca, pipe and bone. Is this 'hand tent' really that outrageous?

And for 5 GOLD PIECES. FOR A SILK CLOTH ON A STICK.

"Well *cough* ya see fellas, this things a...well, you know how a...a lilypad catches water? Well this is...like that. It deflects water! From above. Like rain. And the sun too. Nice of that elf to give it to you, but I bet you could even make them out of lilypads stitched together! You fellas should probably look into that!"

Yeldrid, for the first time in years, suddenly realises he is very, very far from home. And such a revelation makes him feel quite out of sync with his surroundings.

Isamu wordlessly hands the barkeep five gold pieces. The man's had enough of a shock, from his reading of the situation. Gold isn't really a source of peace of mind, Isamu knows, but sometimes it's the closest substitute that can be given.

"Calm down, Rex," he says soothingly, "We'll be needing this for Lady Lanuola. Now, then, are we ready to depart? If we're going by the forest, I'd like to get started now."

Wiski clearly mistakes the amazed look on Yeldrid's face for something else. "Yeah, pretty remarkable, no? Lilypads wouldn't work, though. This is powerful advanced."

Baylily nods along with Wiski, "A lilypad will decompose after a few days. You'd need to have fresh ones on hand before a rain."

She stifles a laugh at Rex's reaction to her familiar, "Jerm tends to go where he wants, though usually not too far."

As Rex sniffs at the leshy, Jerm waves his spear and makes a sound like the crackling of pine in a fire.

*growl*

Bad Business at the Bridge

Wiski and Ms. Weaver both eye the leshy with obvious unease. "You mind, uh, not havin' that thing in here?" Wiski asks Baylily. "I don't want any attention from the spirits."

NG Female Half-elf Druid (Leshy Warden) AC 16, touch 12, flat-footed 14 | Perception +11, Sense Motive +9,

"As you wish," Baylily nods.

She crouches down to the leshy's level, "Wait outside for me, dear. I'll be safe enough. And no running off without me. Try not to scare away any visitors."

She gently nudges the reluctant familiar out the door.

Yeldrid leans close to Isamu and whispers,"You're too kind, mate. Really. A bloody legend. I was gonna pay him in tools."

He leans back and then says to the group "So, if we are aiming to keep with the boat plan, we might wanna get to finding that boat. At the very least, lets go get the maps. Help Rex and our Lady Bancroft get their bearings."

Then ponders for a moment and says "Would anyone really have a big enough boat for 5 people and a mule?" Yeldrid should really go collect Samson the mule from his stable. He's probably pretty lonely.

Bad Business at the Bridge

There seems to be a disconnect here. Some of you seem to be suggesting the forest, while others are suggesting the river.

I don't think anything was particularly set in stonr. We will weigh options once we see about that boat, I think. If it's too small we will have to go overland regardless.

Bad Business at the Bridge

Well, let's just say I wasn't gonna present "you can go by boat" as an option and then have there be no available boats. It might be easier to decide which route you prefer before worrying about getting one. :P
