Ali pads a few feet down the tunnel and turns to look back at the party..the wolf whines as if to say.."Get a move on".

Muchorak removes the Ranseur(which is a pole arm and therefore too large to store anywhere..it has to be carried)

You proceed onwards down the stairs..as you do there is a horrific screech ahead of you and two horrific flying creatures come out of the darkness ahead. Each seems to be no more than a disembodied head of extreme ugliness

Initiative

Inikai 17
Marak 14
Muchorak 11
Kallie 9
Ali 8
Creatures 5
Romon 4

Qadira ((AC 21, hp 54 of 64) Human 7th Cleric)

After Inikai's action, obviously.

"Scales askew!" Marak exclaims, "What madness is this? Each horror we face is more hideous and fantastical than the last!"

Again, his longsword tears free from it's scabbard on his back and flies towards the creatures, as he slashes the air with his dagger.

15 to hit, 7 damage

Vision blocked by the others ahead of him, Romon can just make out the flying forms. Three quick strides backward, and he has room to fire the bow that's now in his hand. He holds his release waiting for a good gap through which to shoot.

Don't figure I can push through the whole line of PCs to melee. Wellard, are the heads high enough that I won't take the firing into melee penalty? And what are the chances of accidentally skewering a party member?

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

Inikai moves with a quickness that surprises him. He steps back, bands his knees low and arches his head up at the body-less things then lets out a terrible moan that grows to a supernatural volume.

Wellard:

Spoiler:

This is the maddening moan power from Dahlver-nar. The heads have to make Will saves or be dazed for one round as a result. Inikai angled his head upwards so that he could avoid catching anyone else in the effect of the sound.I hope that works.

How big is the polearm? I figured it could be attached to the pack at an angle. If that's no feasible Muchorak will not of removed it.

Muchorak swings with his Longsword and the body-less creatures...D20= 14+5=19 Damage D8= 6+3= 9

With the light sources in the party not-including Muchoraks, is there enough illumination to be able to see? I would like to be able to use Muchorak's fighting style, though not at the cost of vision.

Taldor (Male variable 12th lvl Dm/5th level fanboy/3rd Lvl Pedant)

The Dancing lights give more than enough illumination along with the ever burning torch. The slope of the pasage is such that Romon would have had a clear field of fire. You only have a chance to hit a friend on a fumble when shooting into melee

Inakai's howl seems to stagger the trailing head

Maraks sword slashes into the lead head then Muchorak lays it's partner low with a mighty blow that smashes it into the side wall

(Female Human (Chelish) Sorcerer 3)

Kallie's heart skipped a beat. "Desna's sake!" she screamed. She had been so caught up in her contemplations that she had managed to put the threats waiting for them out of her mind for a moment.

She hugged the wall to her left and lashed her hand out, shouting words of power.

Casting: Magic Missile on the closest head

I can't get to Invisible Castle at the moment, sorry. It would be a 1d4+1 roll.

Kallies bolt smashes into the still active head dropping it at Alis feet

Muchorak will be putting out his torche so he will be able to duel weild for any other encounters we may have.

Romon lowers his bow and returns the arrow to the quiver.

That was easy,

(Female Human (Chelish) Sorcerer 3)

Kallie looked down at the heads in revulsion, sending her lights down so others could examine them. "What are they?"

Qadira ((AC 21, hp 54 of 64) Human 7th Cleric)

Marak's longsword returns to his grasp, bobbing eerily through the air like a proud dog returning a stick to it's masters hand. He wipes it clean and sheathes it before kneeling next to one of the fallen 'heads.'

Lord of Duality, once again I call upon your forbidden wisdom, Marak prays silently as he reaches out to touch one of the monstrosities. Lorekeeper from the Knowledge Domain, treat as taking 10 on whatever Knowledge check is required.

Marak

Spoiler:
Your knowledge is not deep enough to identify these creatures. Nethys grants you no insight as to their origin or powers

"Indeed these creatues are strange," Muchorak comments, "Should we fear this creatures healing as the other full bodied creatues did?"

Qadira ((AC 21, hp 54 of 64) Human 7th Cleric)

"I have no insights into the nature of these creatures." Marak admits begrudgingly.

He looks at the wounds on the creature to see if there is any sign of the wounds healing up.

The creatures bleed out and expire as you watch

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

"Your fighting skills and magic are impressive, my friends. I feel more confident now of facing whatever threats wait for us here."

"Muchorak, if you wish I will carry a torch to free your other sword-arm."

Looking at the heads"These things are disgusting and fascinating at the same time. I would like to show them to Ilsoari. In fact, I am going to collect souveneirs of our slain foes."

With that, Inikai uses and empty sack on his belt to collect one of the heads and put in into his backpack.

(Female Human (Chelish) Sorcerer 3)

Kallie tried not to gag as Inikai took one of the heads. What was that howling he was doing? she wondered.

She was also suddenly mindful that she was burning her strength more quickly that she expected. She probably could have restrained herself rather than panicking and throwing one of her more powerful spells at the thing. Gods, if I exhaust myself it will be just like when the goblins attack. Only down here there won't be any place to run and hide... She made herself breath regularly, trying to enforce some calm over herself. Just pace yourself, alright?

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

I was going to post this before I saw Kaliciel's post but decided I did not want an extremely long post. But here is the last part of what I intended to write.

Inikai fumbles about with his belongings for a moment the takes a small jar from his belt-pouch "I forgot that I have harpy musk. It supposedly repuses goblins due to its smell. I have two jars if anyone wants to use it. My chain shirt seems to be protecting me quite well so far."

From behind the others Romon smirks discretely. Wouldn't want to be caught laughing at this crew. They're positively lethal. A tad odd, but lethal. I don't know why Jael was worried about this little stroll. Piece of cake.

(Female Human (Chelish) Sorcerer 3)

"Harpy musk?" Kallie seemed to waver back and forth between revulsion and pragmatic acceptance. "Thank you. But...one wonders how it's collected..." She reluctantly held out her hand for one, clearly not thrilled at the idea of handling it, but even less at the idea of being killed by goblins.

(Female Forest Gnome
Spoiler:
Basically same as regular gnome with a +4 Hide in Forest Bonus
Wild Druid / 7)

Ali moves over to the heads to sniff curiously at them.

As the jar of Harpy Musk is opened teh wold sneezes and growls lightly and backs away from it. Obviously she has no interest in using any of it.

She waits a bit for her companions to do whatever they need to then, when they seem ready, continues down the hall. She tries to see or spot where the flying heads may have come from as she walks.

You descend the stairs to a circular room the door of which is open.

Water ripples quietly in a circular stone pool lined with skulls here.Smears of what looks like blood mar the pool’s rim in places.

A second door firmly shut is on the opposite side of the room

Qadira ((AC 21, hp 54 of 64) Human 7th Cleric)

"This, on the other hand, looks more like what I would expect of a runewell," Marak says, stating what is probably obvious.

If the carrying of the ranseur seems to be any sort of issue, Marak will carry it in his main hand. It's not like he actually uses the dagger he keeps waving around...

Romon considers use of the harpy musk. The idea is repellent, and seems almost farcical. But what would impress Kali more? He decides on the tough, self-reliant approach. "None for me thanks. I'll rely on my sword and quick wits." He smiles self-deprecatingly to reduce the boastful tone of his words.

***

In the pool room Romon looks around. Edging first toward the pool. "Grisly sort of place." Then decides he might as well have a look at the door.

Find traps take 20

"So this...runewell caused those creatures to be?"

Muchorak looks at is puzzlingly, "How can we destroy it?"

(Female Forest Gnome
Spoiler:
Basically same as regular gnome with a +4 Hide in Forest Bonus
Wild Druid / 7)

Ali sniffs around for the scent of Evil, and where it emanates from most powerfully if present.

Hey Wellard can you provide an updated map please?

Qadira ((AC 21, hp 54 of 64) Human 7th Cleric)

Marak checks out the skulls, for any markings or other signs of religious or arcane imagery.

He also activates his detect magic SLA again, while making a Knowledge (arcane, history, religion, whuteva) check to see if he can discern anything about this 'well.' 16

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

Kaliciel wrote:
"Harpy musk?" Kallie seemed to waver back and forth between revulsion and pragmatic acceptance. "Thank you. But...one wonders how it's collected..."

"I never thought about that" Inikai says with a startled look on his face. I hope it is just a figure of speech

Inikai examines the well for any familiar signs
Knowledge (Religion): 19

Knowledge (Arcana): 14

He also turns to look back at the statue of the woman to see if it moves while they examine the well.

(Female Human (Chelish) Sorcerer 3)

Kallie was a bit disappointed that no one else took Inikai up on his offer. She was hoping someone else would try the musk out first...

Kallie examined the well with clear distaste. She probably would have appreciated the visual more if it weren't for the fact that the skulls were real and the blood had to have come from someone. Or something. She half-expected another of those vile split-jaw creatures or flying heads to burst from the waters.

She tried to think back on her studies again, looking for any memory of coming across anything similar to this sight.

Knowledge (Arcana) : 9

Knowledge (Religion) : 5

:/

Hearing Muchorak's question, she realized she better at least try to appear proactive if she didn't have anything actually useful to add. "Yes, if it is the 'runewell', would we need a holy man to destroy it? Or would it call for something else?" she asked Marak.

While the others are inspecting the Runewell, Muchorak moves over to the other door and listens to see if he can hear anything on the other side...Perception D20= 9+6= 15

hmm.seems like Kallie should have paid more attention to her studies

Marak

Spoiler:
There is no Magic emenating from this well..in fact there seems to bee no mystical significance to it at all..no runes..no sigils of power..the skulls are unmarked. In fact it seems to be just what it is..a pool of water

Inikai

Spoiler:
Given the total lack of any religious symbology on the skulls or the well itself you begin to doubt if this is really the runewell

Muchorak hears nothing

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

"I have some holy water that we could pour into the well. Perhaps that might serve to weaken or destroy it; but that is just speculation."

(Female Forest Gnome
Spoiler:
Basically same as regular gnome with a +4 Hide in Forest Bonus
Wild Druid / 7)

Ali as wellChecks out the room (1d20+6=14) for whatever she can smell, hear, see or sense. (+2 to smell & touch checks) as well as sniffing all about for remnants of the scent of Evil.

Qadira ((AC 21, hp 54 of 64) Human 7th Cleric)

"I am no expert on such things, but I am getting the feeling that this is nothing more than a pool of water, with some macabre decorations. I sense no magic here." Marak says. "It may even be a diversion, to guile the unsuspecting into believing that they have found and destroyed the actual runewell."

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

"I agree. In fact, if this runewell is so important to the demon's plan it would probably be hidden and guarded."

"I suggest we take the door there."

Muchorak looks at Romon, "Can you check this door for traps?"

Romon finds no traps

(Male Human (Chelexian and Shoanti mix) Binder 7 (favored class))

"Well, if no one else wants any I will take a moment to apply some of this musk to myself before we use the door."

"I am ready."

(Female Human (Chelish) Sorcerer 3)

Kallie took a jar earlier, if no one else did.

Kallie watched Inikai intently as he used the musk. Oh gods... She really didn't want to rub it on herself, but she didn't want to wind up over some goblin's fire either.

She let out a nearly inaudible whine as she to delicately rubbed her fingers inside the jar and ran them along her arms. She hoped that was enough.

"Don't forget your hair."

Inikai waits a few moments before giving Kaliciel a grin to let her know that he is only kidding

That was evil. DM I want his alignment changed. :)

Romon notes Inikai's little joke. I'll have to go drinking with him.

"Muchorak, you want this door opened now?"

"If you would." Muchorak stands at the ready with both weapons drawn incase more hostilities await on the other side of the door.

Muchorak 'Windstriker' wrote:

Romon complies. As before he keeps the door between himself and the room.

well that was exciting wasn't it

The door opens onto another short corridor with steps down to another door

This reminds me of the beginning scenes of "Get Smart".

"Unto the breach."
