Chessna're- Ok, here's my breakdown.

Powerful races upset gameplay in two ways-

1st- excessively high stats. In any stat that relates to combat damage or saving throws, high stats change game balance, especially at lower levels.

Surprisingly, your character's saves are actually reasonable for 1st level. Your damage output is based on your dex, which is high, but not outside the bounds of what I expect from an optimized character. You're paying a feat to do what an Orc could do with a high strength, but you're getting a higher reflex save out of the deal, so it evens out.

Stat-wise, I'm going to say yes.

2nd- spell-like abilities. At-will abilities really don't matter much in situations where you're only having one encounter between rest periods, and that's the premise of this game. Everyone will be going into every match at full power. It just means you have more than average ammo in your magic gun. The only one that concerns me is Deeper Darkness. Not only is it a higher level spell than you should have, but it's also a show stopper. The crowd will miss all the action once you drop that spell.

So, I'm going to say yes, with the caveat that you don't have access to that ability while in the arena. You still have it, and can make use of it during downtime RP encounters, but it's on an arena restriction list, so using it is breaking the rules.

Now, remember that this has a "professional wrestling" feel to it, so breaking the rules is expected. If you toss it out every once in a while when the stakes are high, I won't be upset. Just remember that when you decide to break the rules, there will be consequences. You might not be eligible for the rewards of the match (disqualification), the organizers might stack the deck against you in later fights.

If you are of with that restriction, and my reasons, I'll allow it.

If it becomes obvious that your character is outperforming others regularly, I may ask you to retire the character, but for now, I'm willing to give it a shot.

ok....changed out from troy mcclure and setup Cedrica Einkill. Same class and what not.
She'll be the sexy superstar that makes the women jealous and the men wanting her...lol.

Good eye James. Thanks.

Cedrica looks fine. I had an idea for your concept and why you'd be there. What do you think of being part of a sort of "reality tv" project for the arena. During the fights you'd actually be reporting on the action from the inside. You'd have a little floating crystal ball with you that would broadcast things from your perspective, and you could communicate directly with the commentators. Sort of like a cross between an investigative journalist doing an "inside the action" piece and a war correspondent.

ooooo sounds like fun! I'M IN!
so as i fight, i have a running commentary of what i see and do?

Exactly. "Cedrica Einkill here, live from the Crossroads with Inside the Arena! Today's match is...."

So, a running commentary of the battles...hmmm...i think ill have to tweak my char to get up in charisma...

Actually, I'm getting the feat as a bonus feat from the Dawnflower Dervish archetype, which is one of my favorite archetypes! My only complaint is that it doesn't fit with the arcane duelist at the same time. I'm glad you like him, he's been rolling around in my head since I found the archetype.

@DM Doomed Hero: Thank you for your prompt and detailed response! I'd agree with you on every account as well and look forward to seeing how the character plays. As far as stats go, I wanted to have a brain over brawn fighter, and have some real character outside the battle field. And as far as rules-made-to-be-broken setting of professional wrestling, I can't imagine a better expert than the drow!

In case Chessna ends up shining a little to brightly, I'll bring another character to arena for role-playing purposes and another choice to play from match to match if that's ok with you!
Edit:I'm just updating Chessna's stat block to include his light blindness, which is another balancing factor, especially with out ample usage of deeper darkness to adjust the climate to a dark elf's liking.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I love it! I'll have to try it out sometime (not this game)

"luscious" Cedrica here, Live from the Crossroads arena, Giving you a front row view of the potential candidates volunteering for this venue. They appear to be from across the globe, i see people from Cheliax, Varasina, Osirion, Tian Xia, just to name a few. All with different skill sets. Each one hoping to win the title of GRAND CHAMPION. Who will it be? We shall see.
I, myself am entering this tournament, not for the prize, but to give you, the viewer, the ability to see first hand the action inside the circle. And, if your afraid that such a fair maiden such as myself may get hurt, i always graciously accept donations
she ends with a wink and a blown kiss.

Keep in mind that this is in a planar city. It's not in Golarion. It's floating out in limbo somewhere.

My computer just fizzled and wiped out my back up character. *sighs* I think I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

As a reminder to the folks that have had their submissions accepted, the character introductions are happening in the Gameplay thread.

I think I'm going to make a winter witch "heel", hehe. A couple questions:

1) As you said, the arena is not in Golarion. The fluff of the Winter witch says they're followers of Baba Yaga and mostly from Irrisen. Do you care if I change that aspect, or are there people from Golarion here?

2) Am I allowed to use some of my starting money to get scrolls to add to my familiar/spells known?

Thanks

mbauers

1) Go right ahead. Fluff is fluff. As long as it doesn't change things mechanically, do whatever you like.

2) Absolutely.

Would you allow a Suli DH? I'm seeing a storm based Suli monk. Still not sure, but sounds cool to me.

Also, I feel they're a little overpowered RAW, maybe drop all resistances but my one element?

Thanks, got a couple more questions for you (no more questions after this I promise, hehe).

I'm considering getting prehensile hair, but based on the wording I had a couple questions I posted in the rules forum. How would you rule on this?

Thanks again.

Hmm, the link didn't work but if you copy and paste it it will.

Hey just curious, would races and what not from other settings be allowed? Like say a Shifter from Eberron?

Also, I was thinking of one my characters being a Dervish Dancer, which would be interesting with Chessna'ra.

Never done a PBP but am highly interested. This is my character for submission, tell me what you think.

Cheliax

dotting for interest. i assume the rules from UC will come into play.

I just have a quick question for the DM about lighting of the various arena's.

Is the light of each arena usually bright or normal to begin with, and if it was bright, would it still be illegal to use deeper darkness to reduce the lighting within the globe to dim? It doesn't completely block sight, and would allow for avoidance of light-blindness on that important first turn. Also, you've ruled that we all have power attack and combat expertise as bonus feats, but it isn't clear if we can actually make use of them with a base attack bonus of +0 for us non martial classes.

P.S. I'm very excited to begin play, this seems like such a wonderful idea! It's really a shame people don't use this setting more often!

mbauers If you only attack with the hair (using it as your primary/only attack), you may use your full BaB. If you attack with the hair in conjunction with other attacks (a weapon or other natural weapons), it would be treated as a normally secondary attack at the -5 penalty.

Samson the Gray Half-Orc Paladin Sacred Shield reporting for duty.
If you'll have me.

Ryoko, Suli are powerful. Mainly it's those resistances, as you mentioned. Pick one element to focus on for your resistance and your energy arms ability and we'll call it good.

Monkeygod a shifter would be fine.

Zib You are approved! Make your way to the Gameplay thread if you'd like to introduce your character. The first match will begin on the 21st.

Radavel anything in the SRD is fair game. What rules were you talking about specifically?

Chess Lighting in the arena is normal. There may be matches where it will be brighter or dimmer than that, and there may be matches where use of Deeper Darkness isn't banned, but as a general rule, they don't want anything happening that severely reduces the crowd's visibility. If you're concerned about light-blindness, get yourself a pair of Riddick-style goggles.

I'll have you as soon as you give me a full stat block to look over.

DM Doomed, any answer here?

Scroll up :)

Haha, sorry, got ninja'd by you. All right, one storm based Suli monk coming up.

It's done! Let me know if I messed anything up as I tried to import from PCgen which isn't that great.

Out of curiosity, how are your bombs dealing 2d6 at first level? I always read pyromaniac as counting yourself as one level higher, but bomb damage doesn't normally improve till the third level equivalent in that case. If you wouldn't mind sharing your secrets as to otherwise, I'd love to know! Gnome alchemists have a special place in my heart.

Samson:
I think your paladin gets a BAB of +1 at first level last time I checked, not to mention you get a couple of traits as well, to further make your character better at hitting stuff! Looking forward to seeing you across the arena. =]

Excellent! Any idea how much those styling goggles might cost a charming dark elf?

Samson Your math needs a little rechecking. Cessna'ra caught the ones that I did, but I only gave it a cursory scan. Please double check. Also, can you either bold your totals, or move them to the front/left side of the skill/ability listing (so they don't get lost among your other numbers). That would help me a lot.

Also, your background leaves it pretty confusing as to why you'd be in the arena. None of the gladiators are slaves. They're all there by choice, or they're criminals who've chosen this instead of incarceration. Can you give me some idea of why you've chosen to fight in the pits?

Zip, Chess is right. Unless you have some trick I've never seen before, your bombs should only be 1d6+int at this level.

Sweet! Yeah, I want it to be my weapon of choice. Since it says I can essentially use it like a limb, can I make touch attacks with the hair as well (for chill touch and whatnot)? Very excited for this, I'll have my full character description and stats sometime today.

Anyone who's new to PbP games who'd like to do a training fight before we jump into the full arena match, please report to the discussion thread.

I see what you mean, back-story wise he is ongoing character concept I like, and I didn't put much thought into his back-story other than what I had already conceptualized for him.

Samson seeks to bring righteousness and valor to the downtrodden, he fights for those that are weaker than him, and would never strike down an unarmed foe.

He has joined the arena in an attempt to bring notice to his cause (liberation of slaves, freedom from tyranny, protecting the weak).
His long term goal would be to fund his own paladin order of misfit do-gooders, the arena might also be a way for him to recruit potential would-be paladins.

I'm not sure if this fits well enough for your game, help me tweak it, tell me what works and what doesn't. I'll get right to work fixing those non bolded totals.

DM Doomed Hero - Joboo's thinking of going ninja instead of rogue. Mostly I think the ninja tricks will work better in the arena than the rogue talents. shouldnt change much crunch wise.

Samson, the games are a good way to train and make money. It could be that this is just a step on the path towards his eventual goal. It might be interesting to have a gladiator with the stance of "I'm not here to win, I'm here to make sure bad people lose.

Joboo, no problem. Let me know when your rework is done.

Oops, he is slightly based of a previous character that was two when i was transferring it over i for got to change the number, will fix that right now

Might I inquire into what type of size the arena will be?

A gladiator ring definitely sounds interesting though. Would you allow a Duergar? And will the gladiators be allowed to buff themselves before hand? Such as cast a spell before they enter the ring?

Joshua Duerger is fine, but read the earlier submission about Drow. If your Duerger's saves or damage output is higher than a 1st level character's ought to be, or if any of your abilities would detract from the games, we'll need to provide a suitable handicap.

The permanent structure is a circle 200' across. Non permanent structures may be inside it to create terrain, and will vary from match to match.

Nothing that happens outside the arena will cary over once the match starts. Everyone starts a match fresh.

It is a pretty powerful race.

  • The stats seem like they sit alright as they match that of a normal dwarf.
  • The extra range to darkvision seems hardly mentioning unless if someone is trying to control the field with darkness that allows darkvision to overcome it.
  • The immunities seem pretty circumstantial unless if someone is making use of poison.
  • The saving throws and stability seem alright as they yet again match a normal dwarf.
  • The spell-like abilities however could be used to great effect. Enlarge Person is usable at first level, however invisibility is not. Though it is part of what tempts me to it. It would be useful for buffing and a one-shot possible sneak attack.
  • Light Sensitivity is a disadvantage so I am guessing there would be no problem with that.

With this in mind, is there anything that you would like to change? I'm looking at a big burly alchemist build.

Nothing offhand. Go ahead and build it. If it seems too much in certain places we'll address them then.

Would you allow me to take Elemental Pupil and apply it to my lightning hands?

I rather get the feeling your going to want to nix the invisibility.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

My latest idea is to make a Flowing monk wielding a double-chained kama. That would allow an attack of opportunity with reach then when they attack me I get an immediate trip and with Vicious stomp feat get an attack of opportunity for the trip. (all before they actually attack)

Unfortunately most of that falls outside of my turn. Would that be too disruptive to do in a pbp?

One more question: Knuckle axes are currently listed as light weapons, but I think I'd like to use them. Can I use them as a one handed weapon? Essentially I'm just wanting the option to Power Attack since you gave it to everyone. I'm also thinking of TWFing with a Knuckle Axe and an Emei Piercer. Very cool weapons to drive home exoticness.

EDIT: On the knuckle axe issue, perhaps at the cost of a trait?

Aw Damnit. Something else caught my eyes and nevermind all that. He's gonna be an unarmed combatant again, so no need for those questions. Except the first one about Elemental Pupil

Ryuko, Elemental Pupil and knuckle axes are fine, and yes you can power attack with them.

Joshua Invisibility is fine since you come out of it as soon as you make hostile action. Improved invis is not. The crowd doesn't like that one.

David please take a look at my posting guidelines in my avatar. Note the open ended attacks clause. That means that when someone attacks you, they'll make the rolls and then describe their intent (the beginning of the attack), then you would describe reacting to their attack, describe your counter attack and make your rolls. Then they would describe their reaction to your counter. Then you would describe your reaction to their initial attack.

essentially, the order is-

they describe attacking
you describe countering
they describe getting hit or dodging your counter
you describe getting hit or dodging their initial attack

It adds some steps, but I'm willing to let you do it if you're willing to deal with the added complexity. If it slows things down, I'll have you retire the character or I'll step in and do some descriptions for you.

Alright, I would like to raise a question that was asked again. For those of us without a +1 Base Attack Bonus, are we still capable of using the free Power Attack feat at a -1 or do we have to wait to get the Base Attack Bonus for it?
