On your advice, I've read Cordelia's Honor and am now halfway through Warrior's Apprentice. Pretty good so far, we'll see how it goes with later volumes.
They only get better.
I will have to try the Honor Harrington books.
I recommend Gordon Dickson's Childe Cycle, Jerry Pournelle's Jannisaries series, David Drake's Belisarius series, and Harry Turtledove's Lost legion series if you like sci-fi fantasy with strong military strategy and tactics throughout. They are all good but not as good as Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series.

I've read the Belisarius series, which was a lot of fun to read. Also by Drake is the "Empire of Man" series: March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars, and We Few. The first two are available for free at the Baen website.

Hey, is everybody okay with me fast-forwarding this to the next morning?

Unless you want us to spring to fight something or interact with a new NPC in the wee hours of the night, I think we can safely move to the next day.
I have no qualms about jumping ahead at any point- I figure we'd let you know if you've not held your horses long enough.

Okay, I've been thinking, and I really hate to have to do this, but the semester is coming to a close and I don't know if I can handle running one big fight, much less two, and do well on finals. So I'm going to be putting a pause on this for a bit. I'll be back a week from Saturday. Sorry to spring this all of a sudden.

No matter how hard your exams are, or how much work you have to do, please remember that there's one person who will suffer more in this process than you: the professor. After all, they have to grade it all...
/Best of luck on your exams!
Not true, that's what TAs are for! And when you have multiple TAs, and one of them takes all the exams so another TA can't find them do to their grading assignment before the professor leaves for a "conference" in Italy, the second gets in trouble.
By the way, if you don't mind my asking, what subject do you do?

Funny, I'm preparing to go back to school after getting my Physics BS in '05. At least, in an MBA, I won't have to worry about actually being challenged and can focus on work/career-applicablity... something I wish I'd done differently the first time 'round, or at least sooner than "now", with a kid.

Having done engineering degrees and a MBA, the MBA was easier (I did have tons of reading and papers to write, but that beats doing tons of engineering problems and labs with writeups).

I'm at a smaller teaching campus of a big school, so no grad students and no TAs. It's me and my 200 students across 4 classes. Fortunately my tenure processes is weighed more heavily toward teaching than research.
I teach psychology: specifically the cognitive/behavioral type courses. I've done work in memory, but my primary area is judgment and decision making- with a focus on altruism and drug abuse. I don't do therapy, but I have worked a few years in an addiction research center trying to figure out why some people aren't successful at quitting. I also do a little research using economic theory as predictors for social behaviors (so you could call it socio-behavioral economics). The work involves some game theory, so I was actually able to purchase a pound of dice for my research/classes.
/lecture mode off.

I've been reading more about child development since we had our son, which has been interesting to learn more about. There was an article on toddlers being naturally altruistic that was fascinating.

I went to college for Chemical Engineering but now do networking. I loved everything about Chemical Engineering but realized I couldn't do it as a career. I was always good with computers so started to do that instead.

It took me some time to identify what I enjoy "professionally", but I like financial and systems reporting for its role in decision-making support. I enjoyed being a TA and teaching labs/help sessions, so the idea of "knowledge empowerment" is one that's stuck with me.
Unfortunately, I'm too round a peg for the square hole - so back to school I need to go, to have any kind of progress with my career. Plus I can't afford the pay cut to take an entry-level job in a lateral career move.

For all my hardies, I thought I would share the Nick Jr pirate name generator if you are too lazy to come up with a Shackled Skulls character name. As this thread is where the Razzle Dazzle door was open, I am sharing this secret link here first.
My pirate name is Rogue Gutless Stockings.

Heyo, one of the games I'm in is in need of a replacement player. You'll be adventuring with a bunch of dwarves, a gnome, and a human. While a front line fighter, or a paladin, would be awesome, I think we can find a spot for you no matter what.
If dwarves aren't your thing, then maybe you'd like to join the elves? They also need some help, badly. I think their much more desperate for a front liner and wouldn't say no to some extra healing from what I've heard. the only bad news is you're going to have to put with a wily dwarf ranger with a penchant for turning people into pin-cushions no matter which side you pick. Picking elves just delays the inevitable ;).
Chainmail's the GM and the encounters have been fun, if terrifying at times. (20 to 7 odds, the 20 had access to mounts, we didn't) Expect to have to play smart and use everything you have at your disposal.
If you're interested, you can go to one of the two threads below. Tell them Brask sent you.

SAme here, I'm at my limit with games. If I take anymore I'll get rping fatigue, which was my problem when I took on Carrion Crown cause then I was running 3 games and in a few others :p
Brain ran out of juice.
DM Aron Marczylo |
I don't worry about that. I lost my mind a long time ago.
oh same here believe me, but difference between losing my brain and ending up having a head full of nothing.

Sorry, was spending time with my mom yesterday. I'll have a map up tonight.
Fearghus |
Oh, no worries there - this weekend was bound to be slow given Mother's Day.
At this point I think it really just comes down to "Will Durnak or Genisen flub a Stealth check?" before moving on with the next step for the campaign.

As an FYI for all, I may be off the boards from Friday the 18th until Monday the 28th. I have attempted to download a program which allows me to tether my PC through my Iphone, but do not know whether it will work where I am going. Thus, I hope to keep up with my characters, but if I fall behind, feel free to DMPC me as necessary.
DM-Salsa |
Sorry, internet was down last night and I don't have one of them new fangled smart telephones that you can get on the interwebs with.
Update tonight if I can.

-Hi I'm here to pick up the remains of the campaign and try to keep some of the characters going. See the thread here...
