Celestine nodded, paying close attention - and not objecting when he suggested her abilities might not have been enough. She had no idea how much he actually knew about her, but if she felt he was wrong... well, the best way to prove that was to accomplish the mission. One did not simply mouth off to a High Priest of Asmodeus, and she glanced towards the others. "Let's go." she said, nodding to Tiadora. She was quite ready to get going.

Tiadora leads you to a flight of stone stairs. "Below, you will find the Nine Lessons." Without any further explanation, she leaves.

At the bottom of the stairs is an unfinished chamber lit by a small oil lantern hanging in the center of the ceiling. On an archway at the entrance of the room is an inscription: "Deception is a tool. Self-deception is death. Deceive always thy enemy but never thyself."

An editable map will be put up within the next couple minutes. A word of warning: this dungeon requires an old-school mindset. *rolls Perception* won't cut it. Describe what you're doing, and reap the consequences (positive or negative) of your actions.

Erick looks about, curiously. So we just have to survive nine rooms is all huh. This sounds easy enough. He walks to the middle of the room holding his arms out. I mean we did just escape an inescapable prison.

He peers at the inscription. What the hell's that mean?

Celestine spent a few long moments looking at the inscription before she answered Erick's question. "It means that things are not what they seem to be." she said, focusing on her powers. Best to have those defenses up before they examined this place too closely. "Marvin, Zyxtyvia, would you mind checking over the walls to see if anything is hidden behind them? I suspect waltzing straight through the door over there is... not the intention of this chamber."

Casting Aegis (Armored Magic) and Aegis (Deflection) on herself. Both should last for 2 hours.

"Probably a good idea. Just in case that inscription is actually a suggestion..." Marvin reached up and adjusted his iron circlet and quickly took the appearance of a Mitran paladin in field plate. "Can't hurt to look like our enemy, right?"

"I expect that with a name like the 'Nine Lessons', each room will likely be designed to teach us something different. Based on our patron, I would guess failure to learn quickly will result in a rather quick and gruesome death. With that inscription, I would not be surprised if the door is simply a trap and the real path is a hidden path in a wall or perhaps beneath the floor."

Marvin moved forward slowly, carefully inspecting both the front and back of the archway, in case there was more to the inscription. Wary of even the most benign objects here, Marvin checked for signs that the oil lamp was just what it seemed, such as the presence of smoke and adequate mounting. When he was confident that simply entering the room wasn't dangerous, he made his way clockwise around the edge of the room, inspecting the walls, floor and ceiling for signs of traps or hidden compartments, before sliding his hand across the surface to check for illusions. Eventually, he made his way to the door, checking for any visual clues to a trap, before touching it to check for illusions, or heat.

Not sure how detailed is too detailed, so I figured I'd go with that and adjust from there. From what I understand, we're not under a time crunch here, and we know that we're being tested, so there's likely to be various tricks and dangers and being extra careful probably can't hurt. Besides, Asmodeus is well known for being somewhat misleading.

Also, is the thin line of tiles on the ground in the middle of the map actually present, or is that an artifact of the map making? Finally, could someone please move me up to the door? I won't be able to modify the map until I get a chance at home, which might be a while.


On the north wall, Marvin finds a cleverly-concealed switch that opens a wall panel. Inside is a small pedestal that holds a jewel glowing with pale blue light (Alchemist's Fire that deals cold damage). Carved on the pedestal is another inscription: "Thou hast seen through deception to uncover a useful tool."

The lantern is ordinary and holds no secrets. The door on the east wall, however, gives a suspiciously-solid *thud* when struck. Normally, doors sound somewhat *hollow*, as there's an opening on the other side. The latch and hinges seem normal, though, so it can definitely be opened.

Celestine eyed the far door for a few seconds, then wandered up to the northern area and read the inscription. "...Check the south wall before trying to open the door." she said, curious what the jewel in question was for. It would probably be relevant before much more time had passed.

"Well, this might come in handy," Marvin said as he pocketed the jewel. "Something is strange with this door, as I suspected. Is anyone able to open it from a distance with magic? If not, I suppose I can pull it open from the side in case anything shoots out from behind it."

In case I wasn't clear, I meant to do a sweep of all the walls skipping the door, before returning to the door itself, so I should have already checked the south wall.

Zyxtyvia leaves the menial tasks to the others as they search the room. She will wait at the doorway until they decide the room is clear. "We should be methodical in our approach to each room. Check for traps at the opening, clear the room of any hostiles of need be, search the walls and then search the next door."


@Marvin: Gotcha. I thought you were moving clockwise around the edge of the room until you reached the door.

Concealed in the south wall is another switch. When activated, a hidden door opens, revealing a passageway.

"Much better." Celestine said, clearly satisfied. She rapped on the side of the archway, then gestured for the others to lead the way down the passageway. This did seem like it would be the way forward, after all - and even if not, it was worth exploring.

Map has been updated. Also, since I forgot to answer Marvin's question earlier, the line down the center means nothing. This section of the AP doesn't have player-friendly maps, so I made my own.

The passage leads down a short corridor and ends at a wooden door. There's an inscription written on it: "Following the herd is for fools. Fear not their icy derision. Instead, fear only thy Infernal Lord."

Inside, the chamber feels strangely cold. The ground is covered in a thick layer of dirt. Like before, the room is lit by a single oil lantern hanging from the ceiling; its glass panes have a small amount of frost on them. There is a single wooden door on each wall of the room. Three (including the one you entered through) appear ordinary; the fourth (on the western wall) is covered in a strangely-pulsating violet mold.

Zyxtivia does much to avoid getting close to the mold towards the west. She will spend a few moments looking at the mold to see if she knows anything about it. [ooc]would that be nature, arcana or dungeon knowledge?[ooc]

"I recommend staying away from the western side until we can figure out what kind of mold that is...unless you are foolhardy or brave that is."


Molds, like most plant creatures, are generally Know:nature

The thing on the western door is a type of variant Brown Mold. This dangerous plant feeds on heat and can quickly freeze you to death if you get too close. While heat makes the mold grow, application of cold will cause it to shrivel and die.

Seems this High priest doesn't clean. Erick waits to see what the other do about the mold as his boredom increases. He tries to keep a level as about it all as Celestine mentioned if he wandered off or touched something out of sorts that it would kill him outright.

"Looks like carefully searching the last room came in handy." Marvin said as he drew the blue crystal and tossed it at the door.

As soon as the crystal shatters against the mold, it shrivels up and dies - revealing an inscription carved into the door. "Thou hast made thine own path."

Well, it hadn't been the best throw ever, but it had worked - and she didn't complain about success. With a shrug, she opened the revealed door and proceeded through it, keeping a Barrier in front of her just in case.

You take a long, vaguely u-shaped corridor that stops at yet another plain wooden door. This time, the inscription reads, "Shatter all that blinds you and then burn thy adversary to ashes." Beyond the door, the room is completely dark.

For the record, examining the dirt on the floor of the previous room would have revealed footprints leading to the other two doors.

Marvin's skin gave way to hardened red scales, his neck stretched and he fell to all fours. Finally, a pair of crimson wings erupted from his back as his scaled skin absorbed the last remnants of his armor.

Shapeshifting to a medium dragon form, with wings, 30 ft. cone fire breath and darkvision. Can I see anything in the room with darkvision?

Adversary, huh? Well, there was probably some kind of creature in the chamber, then, hidden by the darkness... and illumination was not one of her talents. With that, she shuffled back slightly to allow the others to pass.


Marvin:
There are wooden doors on the northern and eastern walls. In the center of the chamber is a stone pedestal with an obsidian globe resting on top of it. Oddly, the entire floor of the chamber is covered with evenly-spaced one-inch-thick holes.

"There appears to be a dark orb in the middle of the room," Marvin said, his harsh draconic voice giving way to his ordinary human tones as his body reverted, though some of the scales lingered around his throat.

Marvin unhooked a crossbow from his pack and slowly loaded it. "Shatter what blinds us then burn our enemies? Sounds like a bolt to the orb ought to do it, no?"

"Or it unleashes whatever horror is in there." Celestine said cheerfully - but she was behind Marvin, and she'd conjured up a Barrier between her and the hall to prevent anything in there from quickly reaching the rest of them. "By all means, though, take the shot."

Zyxtyvia casts light on one of her arrows and tosses the lighted arrow into the room towards the center of the room.

"Maybe we can all see better with some light in here."


Marvin:
Your bolt leaves a large crack in the orb and knocks it off the pedestal. Another shot like that, and the orb will likely shatter - although you can no longer target it from your position outside the room.

As Zyx throws her glowing arrow into the room, everyone can briefly see doors in the northern and eastern walls. There's a small pedestal in the center of the room, although the top is empty. Evenly-spaced across the entire floor of the room are one-inch-wide holes. As soon as the arrow touches the ground, a wispy black tendril reaches out and pulls the arrow into a hole, returning the entire room to a state of darkness.

"Well... I didn't expect that to happen..." Marvin thought for a moment as he reloaded, then turned to Erick with a smile. "Erick, give me a boost so I can get some height and I think I can make it to that pedastal without touching the ground. My wings aren't strong enough to fly properly yet, but I think I can glide in." Marvin said as red scaled wings erupted from his back.

The goal is to get up off the ground and glide in and land on the pedastal, so I can shoot the orb. Currently using blank form with wings and darkvision.

"We'll see what we see once Marvin finishes his work. Planning for the unknown is always difficult. Still - can't hurt to take the warning literally," he said, lighting the torch with flint and steel from a pocket.

Celestine watched, curious to see if the mundane torch would do anything against the light. Sources of darkness were kind of finicky - sometimes natural light helped and sometimes it didn't, and usually the only way to find out was to try it. It was a sensible enough move.

Sholano's torch illuminates the room, although the eastern half remains in shadow. As Marvin lands atop the pedestal, a shadow shape reeking of blood rises from the floor and lashes out at him with a wispy tendril.
Marvin takes 1pt HP bleed and 3pts CON damage.

This appears to be a Vampiric Mist. These creatures are not undead, although they do rely on blood for sustenance.

"What in the hells is that?" Marvin shouted as he jumped back from the shadowy mists. The touch seemed to have drained him somehow, and his wings receded quickly. Leveling his crossbow he took one last shot at the inky orb, before devoting his full attention to his assailant.

Zyxtyvia casts light on another arrow and tosses it in the room hoping to buy a few precious moments to distract the foe allowing the others the chance to break the orb...

Marvin's bolt shatters the orb, completely eliminating the darkness. The mist creature lunges forward, but Marvin is able to dodge the touch - although he continues to bleed. Celestine's bolt squarely strikes the creature but isn't quite as effective as usual (it's amorphous).
