I'm going to wait and see how badly that fireball effects my comrades. So I'll post my action after the save rolls are made.

Does he seem to be taking the effects of the fireball himself or is he resisting the fire?

Reflex save DC 14: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Half damage is 7, minus 6 is 1. Nice.

"Give me that you pathetic cretin." the Black Knight snarls in the Magister's ear, keeping her hold on him and wrenching on the wand.
Disarm: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Since he didn't break the grapple I'm pretty sure I can just maintain my hold and still do things like perform maneuvers, attack with natural weapons or grapple for damage.

If that's incorrect I'll let go of him to grab the wand.

Mysty had been quick enough that Rose hadn't noticed that the wand had already been snatched away until she reached for it. She laughed in approval behind her mask. and simply held on, tightening her grip and hauling the wizards arms back into an uncomfortable lock.

--Nahia Round 8--

Nahia clutches the wand tightly when she sees more fire burst from the mage, but it happy to see that it didn't get far, and that her companions are relatively unharmed.

Ok, it looks like they have this... I can catch my breath...

Nahia takes a step to put the stone wall between her and the outside and takes a moment to catch her breath, her free hand running through her singed hair.

She brings that hand close, bows her head, and starts to chant Aklo: "Spirits that float in the wind of life, please, come and grant me your blessed energy..." As her familiar green pinpoints of light begin to appear a faint wind starts to swirl around her, removing the stale scent of burnt hair and cloth, almost making her feel cold after the intense heat. But as the light enters her body and the wind dies down, she lets out a calm breathe, her nerves steadied.

"Gatehouse." Rose growled, frustrated that the wizard had escaped her. "Disguises up. Is there enough power left in that healing wand to get us ready for another fight?"

She was wasting no time. The picked up the lord's sword again. The staircase leading up to the wall was right on the outside of the door they'd come out of. She kicked a guard in the head as she went just as her form rippled and her guise as a soldier wrapped her again.

Her body was screaming at her. Battle fatigue, burns, half healed wounds all abraiding beneath her heavy armor. She felt like Hound looked. She just refused to let it stop her.

"Wait. Why are we so interested in signaling the army now?!?" Seren cries with frustration, remembering her conversation with Sakkarot weeks ago.

"Sakkarot's not even going to be ready to move his army for another 3 or 4 days! We've routed the watchtower, all the commander's are dead or running, and we still have the front door intact! No one has any knowledge of a, who we are. and b, how we got in here." She explains.

"Take a breath. The Magister's not going to try and build an army to siege the tower, and even if he tries, he's going to have a tough time convincing anyone that the watchtower has actually fallen. It still looks flawless to the casual observer." She scolds.

"Let's not rush this and make Sakkarot come when he's not ready. There is still so much more fun to be had, and if we've gone through the effort of clearing this tower, we might as well get some of the spoils before it all gets lost to pillaging."

By my memory we should be at the morning of Oathday, and our planning document mentions that Sakkarot won't be ready to move out till Sunday. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

"The magister escaped. You think he won't be going for help? How many days do you think it will be until there's a force of knights riding in to restore order?"

"We need to render this place indefensible. That means seizing the gatehouse, opening the gates and fixing it so they won't close again, and then breaking the siege weapons. If we do that it won't matter if reinforcements come. There won't be enough of them to stop Sakkarot's horde from just walking in."

"You mean the creepy Magister that keeps himself holed up in his tower working on nefarious things from the north? Not even the people of this town trust the guy. How likely is it for someone to see him port in and just believe him outright that the unbreakable, unassailable watchtower has fallen?" Seren asks quizzically. "Plus I want whatever he was working on!"

"At worst we might get a scout sent to try and figure out what's going on. Cause even if they scry the place it still looks like the watchtower is totally intact save the rookery. The Magister is going to have to have extremely solid proof to get any knights up here, and even then the knights aren't likely to actually believe this place has fallen. I know from experience just how hard it is to break someone's faith, and every person in the kingdom down there has faith that this tower is an impenetrable wall of protection from the monsters of the north. The news that this place has fallen will cause a lot of harm and spread a lot of fear within the kingdom. Sending a force of knights up here certainly won't help quell any of those rumours, and keep the faith of any of the civilians. Trust the politicians to do what's in their best interest; we have time." Seren reasons.

Summon Wall of Text VII!

The defenses of the Tower were in disarray. Their leadership dead, or worse, the guards were running much like chickens with their heads cut off. Guards were speaking of fleeing, or already were. It didn’t matter to the villains. Let them flee, or die in place, it would be little different to them in the end. Disguised by illusion as guards, the ninth knot moved through the chaos, heading for the gatehouse. Their focus was sharpened by their success to date, and the rewards of success.

”The guards here won’t be demoralized yet, so be cautious” Rose reminds the team. Quickly they cross the bridge. Rose thumps the door several times. Let us in, we’re reinforcements

”What? Reinforcement? That durned fool of Samaul did not mentioned anything of that. What's the passcode? A gruff dwarven voice replied.

”Captain Sam's dead! Father Donnigan too! We're under attack! Lord Thomas sent us! He's engaging the enemy in the tower!” Rose said frantically. Nahia looks at Seren and whispers ”Is that the dwarf Barnubus. I thought he was in the dungeon.” Seren gives her a one arm shrug, and hefts her mace. She had promised it blood tonight, and soon it would feast.

”Aye, we guessed as much, with all that noise and explosion outside.” says the dwarf and then he continues in an almost angry voice ”Ambush, the durned humans said, should have killed them in the Inn.” then after a small pause If ye wants to enter, better tell the passcode” the voice inside tells you.

Rose’s eyes narrowed at the response and she moves to one side of the door. Looking at the party she gestures for caution. Mysty moves to the other side of the door, and using the message spell upon them, whispers ”Too easy. I sense deception from that dwarf. Be wary.”

Seren and Nahia stand ready as hound moves to one side. With a loud clunk, the bolts holding the door are released.

The coterie of villains readies itself for an ambush that does not come. With the clack of chain and the scrape of metal on stone, the doors open to an empty room. The Dwarven voice shouts down ”Aye, we aren’t supposed to keep this open long. Stop dawdling!”

Hound steps towards the room, muttering ”It’s definitely a trap, but we can’t turn back now...” The tone in his voice makes it obvious that he doesn’t like it either, but that doesn’t seem to stop him. The rest of the party follows behind the large man, their concern palpable.

It is just as they arrive inside, their eyes adjusting to the darkness, that they notice no way out of the room, and before anyone can react, the doors loudly starts to slam shut behind them as the dwarf above yells ”Now boys, fry the murdering goblin lovers!” And with that, red hot sand cascaded through murder holes in the roof. A second cauldron was tipped near the drawbridge entrance, catching the whole of the ninth knot.

Normal souls would die at this point. Normal souls could do nothing else. But the ninth knot was made of hardier stuff. Mysty flipped backwards into the doorway, perhaps the safest place for the moment, while Rose leaps backwards, hissing in pain by fire that exceeds her natural defenses against it. Roaring in pain himself, hound leaps forward, slamming his shoulder into one of the closing doors, jamming it open for that moment, as Mysty, Rose, Seren and Nahia exit the death trap. Nahia and Seren cry out as the sand burns them but move backwoods, both badly burned, but defiant. Seren’s spits out a curse that startles even Nahia in her own pain.

Rallying, Nahia calls out ”We retreat for now. This way leads only to death.” And with that she heads back over the bridge, dragging Seren. The others follow, the gate slamming shut when hound releases it.

”Shoot them, ye damn fools. Tha gettin awa' ” The dwarf yells and arrows and bolts start slamming the bridge around them. On the walk way above several archers are loosing their arrows as fast as they can reload. Despite this, the ninth knot takes little more damage as they seek safety. Cheers from the gatehouse follow them.

"Thank you Hound.", Rose murmurs after they reach relative safety. Despite his burns, and an arrow or two, he smiles, pleased by the thanks.

”Well that could have gone better”, Seren snarled. Her hands are clenched to whiteness as she grips her mace.

”Yes it could”, was Rose’s cool response. Let us make sure the next attempt is better. Let us examine the situation. Nahia, can you heal Hound?

Nahia pulls out her wand, speaking the word of command. Hound feels the burn of infernal healing. Despite the fact that it hurts, it heals, and pain is no stranger to hound.

Rose, Mysty and Seren look at the gatehouse through door onto the bridge, keeping care to stay in cover. Occasionally a shot comes their way. Mysty points at the catwalk ”There, that’s where we should attack. Won’t be easy, but it is not designed well to defend from that side.”

”We will have to enter from the level above. The dwarven map shows the way.” Seren says

”Then let’s do that” Rose agrees. ”I think the time for illusions is gone. Let them see what faces them. Kill any in our way.”

Decision made the Ninth Knot heads back up to the second level, killing a few guards in their way. A little searching finds the way to access the cat walk, and soon Mysty sneaks forward to observe it. Unseen, she sees a pair of Archers, and a dwarf with a crossbow on the catwalk, talking quietly to themselves.

”Do you think they have fled, Reglin?”, one asks the dwarf.

”Hard tuh say. Doesn’t matter. We hold tha gatehouse until relief arrives.”

Mysty spots some rather valuable intelligence during this. The far door was open. Grinning she slips back to the knot and says ”Three on the catwalk. It is rather narrow, ten feet or so, but I think we can clear it quick. The dwarf might be the main problem. The far door is open, to let them escape if attacked I guess.”

Rose frowns. ” Bad practice. The door should be secured. Sloppy. ”

Nahia laughs, ”Really Rose? Are you concerned about the enemy having bad practices?”

Rose laughs as well ”You have a point.”

” The problem is that it’s 100 feet or so to the door, through the fools on the bridge. If it is shut, we are in great trouble. Cracking the door there would be difficult, and they will be shooting us as we do it.” Mysty grimaces. ”I am not the fastest here, but even you biggers might have problems.”

”Um, I might have a solution.” Nahia says quietly. The others stare at her. ”I have a spell that allows one to fly for some minutes. If I cast it on someone, they could hold the door while the rest of us attack along the catwalk.”

Rose smiles. ”Cast it on me. In the name of our dark father, I will hold the door. Just don’t be tardy.”

So the ninth knot prepared. Nahia casts the spell on Rose, and gives her some slight instruction on how to use it. Hound, with much effort, rips a door off its hinges. Rose flew off on an indirect route, to reach the door from stealth. The night shielded her as she did.

At last Rose appeared as an avenging angel onto the catwalk, landing at the door, a ringing battle cry rousing the night. The guards on the bridge spin round to face her dumbfounded, and there are yells of surprise inside the gatehouse. Mysty casts her last blade spell as Hound picks up his door, and charges across the bridge with it in front of him, roaring himself. Behind him the others follow, Nahia hexing the dwarf as she came. Confused the dwarf spins about; raising his axe, but the mighty barbarian swats him off the bridge. Screaming he falls into the gorge. Continuing his charge, the archers seek to avoid him, but he is relentless. Seren charges behind him, screaming, and Nahia and Mysty follow up, Nahia demonstrating her withes hexing ability. Within seconds Hound has dispatched the archers (knocking them over the side) and reached the door.

In the time it took the rest of the party to cross the bridge, Rose was engaging three dwarves, one of whom was Barnabus. For the time being she holds her own, but had taken several hits on her armor, to which she had replied to the dwarves, one of which lay on the floor, bleeding out his life. More dwarves and guards were behind them. Hearing the roar of the approaching Hound, she feinted and slipped to one side. Hound flung away the door, and claws extended, leaps into the dwarves. Grabbing one around the throat, he crunched his windpipe and then hurled him into the mass beyond. Seren arrives and casts a spell on Barnabus, saying “Do you think you are on the right side? Kill the one next to you.”

Mysty and Nahia slip in, Nahia dropping hexes as she came, Mysty weaving between the larger opponents, slashing with her enspelled weapon.

Barnabus’s eyes glaze over as the spell takes effect, and he suddenly turns and strikes another dwarf, splitting his head. Then he comes to his senses. ”Naw, Castlin, Whut have aye dun. You blasted witch, I’ll kill you!” Seren gives him a mocking giggle.

Disregarding other foes he storms forward, taking hits from Mysty and Hound, but is stopped short by the cold efficient thrust of Rose. He stands in front of Seren, barely maintaining consciousness. ”You witch..” he manages. Seren swings her mace in an overhead blow, with oblivion at its end. And so ends Barnabus, not with a whimper but with a sickening crunch.

The battle continues, as the two sides meet as the clang of metal on metal rings out. But the villains are surprised when they hear more clangs behind them, as more dwarves drop from the floor above. Seren matches hammer with mace and takes the opening to grab the Dwarf at the neck, her dark energy nearly draining the life from him, but Nahia turns just quick enough to take a hammer to the chest, the sound of crunching bone ringing in her ears.

Hound’s slow claws keeps meeting shield and steel, so he drops it, drawing the greatsword used by Samaul. Closing the distance and overwhelming the Dwarf with his sword, steel meeting flesh, tearing at joints and tendons. Rose rushes back towards Nahia, slapping aside the next hammer blow with her shield and managing to slice the forehead of the Dwarf. Seeing the fear in his eyes, Rose whispers ”Run, coward.” The Dwarf quickly turns and begins to climb the ladder to the roof, just as Mysty appears from the shadows and deftly slices his achilles tendon. The heavy Dwarf barely makes it to the floor before Mysty’s dagger finds its way into his eye socket.

With this the morale of the remaining defenders is crushed, but they fight on seeing no quarter in the eyes of their foes. The end is inevitable, but hard fought. The guards and dwarves do a fighting retreat to the roof, followed by the knot. All of the knot were injured, close to their limits, but the tower defenders fell first. Truly their last defense, their fidelity to their oaths would be legend, if any were there to see it. But all they had was the braying of the crows, with villainy triumphant.

And suddenly, there is a loud crack, the sound of crunching bone, as the last defender tumbling from the wall, before landing with a wet thud on the cobblestones below. Seren giggles, blood dripping from her mace, her withered form shrouded in moonlight, as she shouts ”And as the gods did instruct their followers to look towards the light, lo, did the Dark Prince grin and remain silent. For his enemies wouldst blind themselves, thus ensuring their own destruction!”

Rose bowed her head in silent reverence as Seren's prayer howled into the night. She'd been saved and protected by divine grace so many times tonight she'd lost count. She was truly blessed. They all were. She took a deep breath and pulled off her helm letting her fiery hair tumble down. Somehow she still managed to look perfect. Better than usual, even. She soot smeared across her face with rivulets of sweat that had drawn lines through it, looking a bit like savage war paint. Somehow she'd managed to get a smear of blood across her jaw. Something about her inhume heritage made that seem like the way she was supposed to be. Her hair, not surprisingly, was flawless. She smiled brightly at her companions.

"Good work everyone. We're almost done. Just a few details left to work out. Mysty, figure out how the gate mechanisms work, and how to break them. We want to make it so they'll still open the gates, but not close them."

"Someone, give me a hand getting out of this armor. We're going to dress a corpse in it. Seren, do you have any tricks for making a corpse look different, or for making them look like they're still alive? I want to make these guys look the way the Mitrans think followers of Asmodeus should look. I also want to try to convince the survivors that the lord is just badly injured."

As she talked she was quickly pulling at buckles.

"Hound, you get to be the hero tonight. When the rest of the defenders show up they're going to find you, as the last surviving guard amid the corpses of the 'invaders.' Mysty, you're going to be the brave page who saw him kill the invader's leader and kept him from bleeding out while they waited for help."

"The rest of us are getting out of here. I'm going to use the tail end of that flight spell to get Seren and Nahia back to the inn, and hopefully make it back here before the spell runs out. I'm going to pull rank on some soldiers and send them to get the healers who are staying at the inn. You're going to come patch up the wounded survivors and pronounce Lord Thomas alive, but only barely. At that point Hound and I should be able to rally the troops and take on roles as temporary leaders."

"Mysty, I'm going to whip up some fake correspondence between the magister and the invaders and get it to you as soon as I can get a break. Just get it into the magister's quarters. and it'll come out in the wake of all this."

"If everything actually goes well for once, we should be able to wait out the next four days right here in the keep."

Very well Rose. I'll sabotage the porticullus and gate as quickly as I can. But it will be obvious to any who inspect it.
Mysty started to move off, when she turns and says Also, be careful at the inn. Remember barnabus was here fighting us, and was not in prison. He also said something about killing someone at the inn. Maybe we preempted an arrest attempt with our attack.

She looks at the bodies. Perhaps you add in the treachery of the dwarves in our cover story

Looking at hound she says hound, could you come with me. We need to pull up a porticullus and open a gate, then jam it. I could use your strength.

Mysty exalted, showing no expression. The promises made by her voice were coming to fruition. She moved away with a skip in her step.

"Wouldn't it be possible to make it so the winch will not release once it's used to open the gates? Rather than jamming the doors open, I mean."

I'm hoping to leave the gates closed for now, but fix them so that once they are opened, they won't be able to be closed again because the mechanism won't release. Not sure if that's possible, but it's the best case scenario.

"Alright. As long as the gate still seems functional we can work with that."

We've been assuming it is a Winch activated draw bridge. Is that correct? This is going to seem really silly if it's just a big push gate with a drop beam.

"Hehehe. Let those damn mitrans stew on that one for a bit. Right here Rose? Perfect." Seren mutters, slumping to the ground as Mysty and Rose continue their boring talk about how to best scuttle the gate.

She looks over at Nahia. "Okay, bloodlust sated, gods below, I don't think I've ever been quite this drained. But hell that was fun!" Seren says with an exhausted chuckle.

"Maybe next time though... Let's break up storming the castle into a couple of trips eh?" She adds, closing her eyes and leaning back against the wall her glamer failing as she tries to maintain consciousness and not fall into a deep slumber.

Seren chuckles again, her eyes remaining closed. "Sure! If you want to make the corpse walk and dance. Want it to look pretty? Not so much."

"Even if I did..." Seren begins lifting a hand into the air in an arcane gesture. "Totally drained. Not doing anything of much magical value until morning."

"Unless you could get a scroll of gentle repose from town. I'm sure they have it in stock for funerals and such. I Think I've got enough left in me that I could probably activate a scroll."

"I guess we'll have to do this the harder way."

"I'm going to take you and Nahia back to the inn. I think I can fly you back right to your window. Hound, Mysty, strap my armor onto one if these corpses and then drag it somewhere that you can dump hot sand all over it. Make it look like the murderhole defenses did their job. The sand should render the body into unrecognizable cooked meat pretty fast."

Rose opened her arms and gestured to Seren and Nahia.

"Get close and hold on ladies."

It would have been a lot sexier if not for the arming doublet she still wore, which was completely soaked through with blood and sweat.

Nahia, sitting back against the cool stone and blood dripping from the corner of her mouth, smiles at Seren. "It could have gone better, but we're all alive, so there is that... and I'm glad you enjoyed yourself."

I can't wait to get a good nights sleep and to heal up tomorrow. Just a few days and then we can signal Sakkarot, and he'll come charging down here, sweep through the land, and I can have some victory drinks with him and Big 'Un.

Nahia lets out a long sigh as she stands, which breaks into a cough towards the end. "I, too, am spent." Nahia says as she approaches Rose.

Gripping on tightly, the battered Nahia squirms until she finds a position that least pains her ribs, and waits for the takeoff.

This would be a great opportunity to mess with Rose... but I just don't have it in me right now...

Human Hero Killer1 / Holy Assassin1 / Deceiver2

Since Rose don’t want to do it, I’ll do. Sorry if it’s not the best out there.

Their plans set into motion, Rose used her remaining spell to try to get into the inn, with no real success. The magic ended they were halfway between the watchtower and the Lord’s.
With no other option, they walked run, leaving blood and sweat in their path, the three of them too much battered and exhausted, for anything else than just keep running.

Changing their disguise before entering the lords, somehow, in that painful tired after battle haze, they managed to return to their rooms, seemly unobserved. Once there, doors locked. Rose in her room, Seren and Nahia for in a mutual unspoken agreement in the same room, sweat, blood and burnt flesh was nothing compared to the promise of rest and the blissful quietude that sleep brings.

Come the morning things would change, but morning was still some hours away.
