RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Thread started.

Though we'll be following the basic Civil War structure, there is space to deviate from the canon (such as your Captain America choosing to support the SHRA, instead of opposing it). We'll see where the story takes us.

We'll be using the troupe play rules introduced in the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Civil War source book. Each player will start with one of the characters listed below. As play progresses, you'll have the opportunity to 'unlock' additional characters for your troupe. On the other hand, some characters may become unplayable later, based on individual and group decisions.

Starting characters:
Arachne
Armour
Beast
Black Panther (unlockable)
Black Widow
Cable
Captain America
Colossus
Cyclops
Clint Barton (Goliath)
Clint Barton (Hawkeye)
Clint Barton (Ronin)
Cloak
Dagger
Daredevil (Danny Rand)
Daredevil (Matt Murdock)
Deadpool
Doctor Strange
Emma Frost
Falcon
Goliath
Hercules
Human Torch
Invisible Woman
Iron Fist
Iron Man
Luke Cage
Mister Fantastic
Moon Knight
Ms Marvel
Nighthawk
Punisher
Sentry (unlockable)
Shadowcat
She-Hulk
Spider-Man
Spider-Woman
Storm
Sub-Mariner (unlockable)
Thing
Thor (unlockable)
Tigra
Wasp
Wolverine

Emma, the Frost. :p

Qadira

Though I'm very tempted to try Deadpool, I think he'll be a very disruptive character to have around, either playing him to character or getting him wrong.

Therefore I think I'll start off with Hank McCoy (Beast) as my first hero in the team.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Deadpool can never be wrong :)

Sounds like we might have an X-Men team here.

As much I too am keen for Deadpool I agree about the disruptive aspects of him. So I'm going to call Cable.

I'll draw up some guidelines for dealing with the Cortex dice system later this week. Then once everybody is ready with their datafiles, we can start play soon thereafter.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Right, everybody should have their datafiles now. Pick one or both of the milestones available to your character. New milestones will emerge while we play. However, you can only have two milestones (per character) at once and you can only replace a milestone once you complete an existing milestones

We'll use the Google spreadsheet to track XP, milestones and datafiles.

Emma is totally following the hellfire milestone

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Right, I've posted the start of the opening scene. BOLD ALL CAPS indicates a scene distinction.

Once you have chosen your milestones, feel free to jump in.

Qadira

So we do not start with story milestones available?
Or how soon will they be appearing?
As it looks to be smart just to grab both mine then if there are no other options.

They should start popping up soon, by the end of the second scene, in terms of in-game time. The story milestones do depend on your stance on registration though. For example, pro-registration could focus on unmasking unregistered superhumans, while anti-registration could focus on protecting the identities of unmasked superhumans. Pro-registration (or anti-registration double-agents) are more likely to side with S.H.I.E.L.D., as another example, and may be able to access special S.H.I.E.L.D. milestones.

However, in terms of real-time, I can't say how long that will take (nature of PbP).

Qadira

Okay, I'll go with one Milestone then, and pick up some story related one later. MUTANTS SANS FRONTIÈRES milestone for Hank then then

In response to Emma's question, some more background info and common arguments:

6 U.S.C. S. 558—also known as the Superhuman Registration Act, or SHRA—proposes that all those with superhuman abilities who are active within the United States of America register with the United States federal government as “living weapons of mass destruction.” This applies to all such cases, including those naturally occurring, those endowed with magic, or those subject to the effects of extreme sciences. It even includes gods and those using remarkable and unique technology.

If the SHRA passes, these things happen:
- Superhumans must register with government officials.
- Government agencies regulate, approve, or deny professional use of superhuman abilities.
- Those not in compliance are declared in contempt of the law.

If the SHRA fails, these things happen:
- Proponents for the bill promote other, more extremist bills to encourage harsher restrictions.
- Superhumans supporting the SHRA are seen as traitors to the cause.
- Villains use this to justify superhuman supremacy agendas.

Quote:
- Government agencies regulate, approve, or deny professional use of superhuman abilities.

Please expand on the entirety of the ramifications of this line.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

It could include drafting superhumans into law enforcement or military agencies. The act is, however, very vague in areas.

What is "professional" use of superhuman abilities?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Earning a salary from the mentioned agencies, as an example, while fighting crime.

Qadira

is there some way I can set up this to send me an e-mail when new posts are made? I can see myself forgetting to check in for a day or two and then missing loads of posts?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Click on the little orange square at the top right of the thread. That will let you set up your RSS feed for the thread.

Qadira

was looking at that, but RSS is NOT email notification. I'm using too many different connection devices currently...

I Googled around and it seems that RSS would be the only available option. There must be a reader that can ping an e-mail account though.

Anyway, Ms Marvel will be joining the PbP after this scene with Congress.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Cable is not going to be able to commit more time to the game in the near future. I'll work him out of the scene and move Emma and Beast into buddy mode.

In the interim, would you remaining two like to go at it with just the two characters? If not, we can see about recruiting another player (suggestions?) or expanding the troupe sooner (maybe more than one character per player).

Male

Ok I'm interested in playing the cliche but not to be missed Wolverine!

Welcome! I'll send the invites to the Google documents in a moment. Feel free to jump right in though.

Male

Also since I forgot to post the milestone I'll be using, I'm using ...and what I do isn't very nice.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Right, I'm slowly moving back online. My next IC post will see us take to the air.

Qadira

M

nice to see some good superheroics out here. I look forward to reading your exploits. The system is new to me though, is it FATE based? Played a Dresden Files game at Gencon this year.

Anyway, good luck team.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Thanks Zerombr. It's based on Margaret Weiss Productions' Cortex System. Marvel is my first experience with it, but they've done several other games using the system.

Much to my shame, I haven't tried out a FATE-based game yet. It's on my to-do list.

Qadira

M

the system about applying aspects and such is very similar, which is why I asked. I find it interesting that both it and Cortex are more about cooperative storytelling than anything else.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I agree. This is a bit of a PbP experiment for me. I've run and played in several PbPs that put a lot of focus on the tactical aspects of the game, such as Rogue Trader's ship-to-ship combat. Though I loved those games and characters, I'm really interested in seeing how the Cortex system performs over the PbP medium.

Male

I love this little touch...

The Stamford tragedy has come to pass. We're now in a transition scene where you can plot out what to do next. I've updated the spreadsheet with new milestones, which have become available. Feel free to grab a new one now.

Male

I'd like to grab MY ALLY, MY ENEMY as my additional milestone. After the Pro-Reg/Anti-Reg split really happens I'll set who the ally turned enemy is.

Think I'll grab LEAD THE CHARGE as that role seems to fit Hank quite well.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I got the X-Men Civil War source book (finally). I'll update our spreadsheet with new options when I get a chance. And I still need to figure out how to implement the troupe mechanic (if we're even going to use it). New datafiles:

Archangel
Bishop
Caliban
Domino
Dust
Elixir
Forge
Hellion
Iceman
M
Magma
Marvel Girl
Mercury
Micromax
Multiple Man
Mystique
Nightcrawler
Omega Sentinel
Psylocke
Rockslide
Rogue
Sabra
Sabretooth
Shatterstar
Siryn
Strong Guy
Surge
Wolfsbane
X-23

Male

Regarding Wolverine following Nitro, it seems likely that he would have to go off the grid for a while. Would it be acceptable to put him on the trace of Nitro and let that all get handled behind the scenes while I continue on as another X-man until Wolverine reports back?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I've been thinking about this.

  • The rules make allowance for split-party dynamics (solo, buddy, and team dice). So it is possible to have Wolverine run on his own in a forked thread.

  • Wolverine recruits Emma and Beast too (nothing wrong with that) and all three go hunting for Nitro. (Or they convince Wolverine to wait)

  • Lore and Hevn choose two new X-Men to run with Wolverine (troupe rules).

  • You choose another X-Man to stick with Emma and Beast (troupe rules), while Wolverine NPCs for awhile.

Options 2, 3 and 4 are probably the easiest to handle. What do you think?

Male

Fair enough, we can resolve through roleplay which option it is. Basically if Wolverine does end up going off by himself it seems best I pick another X-Man to stick around and keep the timeline/thread cohesive.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Troupe rules:

Now would be good time to try out the troupe rules, since some X-Men are not that well suited for fighting nuclear bombs. Beast has decided to tag in Nightcrawler.

For now, I'm going to use the simple troupe rules: XP is pooled for your roster of heroes, can be earned by any member of your troupe and can be spent on any member of your troupe.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

OK, the milestones are updated in our spreadsheet. Now the list includes more X-Men relevant examples.

I know that Lore is going to be offline for most of the holidays (and my connectivity might also take a slight dip), so we'll wrap up this transition scene and then kick off the hunt for Nitro in the new year.

Male

Is it dead?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Sorry guys. I had an incredibly, atypically and unexpected busy two weeks. Seems like I'm coming out of that now. Updates to follow soon.
