Taking a deep breath, Darya throws open the door.

Darya pushes up the hatch. Inside she can see, as Luci suspected, a pair of crossbeams that support the structure; a person could walk on them, though they are only about a foot wide. (Don't get hit while trying to balance on them.) The silo is about half-full of grain and a haze of dust fills the air.

Huddled on the grain, hissing as the door opens, are several rats - enormous rats, with bony spikes protruding from their backs, and a wicked red tint to their eyes. They're easily the size of dogs, and clearly quite hostile. You can also see the grain shifting and moving around, as there are other... things... in there.

Map updated! Ok, here's the stuff that's important to know.

Moving at half speed on one of the beams is a DC 5 Acrobatics check. Per the rules, this means no roll is needed unless something increases the DC, but it does mean you can still only move at half speed on the beam.

If you fall or jump off the beam, you will land in the grain pile. Moving through the grain pile requires Swim checks, DC 10. You will sink if you are in heavy armor! You will effectively have the same penalties as fighting underwater (it's hard to chop through a heap of grain with a sword, but you can stab with a spear), but you are not at risk of drowning. If you sink to the bottom you might suffocate, though!

If you fall into the grain and want to get out, you must get adjacent to a beam, and it's a DC 10 Climb check.

There is not enough room on the beams to move through friendly spaces.

The rats are light enough that they can move on the grain as if it's difficult terrain, but they can also dive into it.

The reveal of the demon/mutated/possessed/whatever rats, caused a string of Abyssal to issue forth from Luci's mouth. It wasn't an actual sentence, more a random assortment of various expletives, and rather harsh ones at that.

She readied herself to strike at any rats that came out of the hatch, not keen to go near the rats of her own accord (even if she thought she could maintain her balance on those crossbeams).

Readied action to attack any rats that come within melee range of her.

As Luci watches, the rats move to the center of the silo and assemble around the intersection of the beams, then crouch down, hissing angrily and staring at the team.

Looks like they have readied an action.

Merlin accesses the situation. The youth looks at the dangerous footing. He then looks at the others.

I am thinking we just leave the door open, allow them to get out and meet them in a more advantages situation.

Merlin then smiles, as he back back down the stairs to shut any exits out.

"I doubt they'll want to come out, all the food is in there!"

Kelly slips past Luciana, following behind Darya. "Let's try to lead them back to the door." she says to the Aasimar. She crouches down on the beam and flicks some grain at the demon rats with the flat of her knife, hoping to goad them into running forward.

Iomenna moves behind Luci and draws her crossbow. "Seems like they have the advantage in terrain. They can move across the grain easily enough. What concerns me more is what is moving around down underneath the grain..."

You think the rats could easily dive into the grain pile - if you want them out, you'll have to go in after them!

Darya manages to slowly work her way out onto the beam. Kelly does likewise while Sario covers the door.

There's a momentary stand-off as the rats, crouch and hiss at you, then the two lead rats squeak and launch themselves at Darya.

Dire rat attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Dire rat attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

One manages to land a painful, filthy bite on the paladin. It seems painful and awful in a way that no rat bite should be.

Dire rat damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Unless you're immune to disease, that also precipitates a DC 11 Fort save.

The other two dive into the grain and burrow through it, while whatever else is under there churns like waves.

Kelly slips back into the adjoining room. "Maybe we can go down to the ground floor and drain out the grain," she suggests, "I'm not sure I want to eat grain that has had demon rats swimming in it anyway."

To empty the silo in that fashion you'd have to break a hole in the side or wreck the access door on the bottom - it's built so that the door opens up on the inside, specifically so that if the granary is full, the pressure of the grain keeps the door shut and keeps it from accidentally getting opened and spilling out. Possible, just would require a few good hits. :)

Iomenna drops her crossbow outside the silo, then rushes in past Luci, drawing her hammer once she gets inside, and preparing to whack a rat if it gets close enough.

Falling back, Darya drops her crossbow, drawing her sword as she readies herself for the rat's next attack.

Iomenna moves into the room as Darya falls back. The rats swarm toward Darya as she retreats.

...alas, she barely keeps her balance on the narrow beam, and misses.

Rat: Attack Darya: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Iomenna brings her earthbreaker down as the rats on the flanks close in, but the rat dives through the grain and she slams it into a pile of wheat kernels.

Iomenna gets her feet nipped as the rats close in!

The room at the bottom of the stairs is basically a scribe's office, for recording grain deposits and transfers. There's a desk with a ledger, an inkpot, a copper mug, and not too much else.

Kelly dashes over to the desk and grabs a mug, then runs back to the opening, lining up for a throw.

The trick of both balancing in armor on a narrow beam and fighting things so low to the ground result in another frustrating miss, as Darya swings in vain.

Kelly's thrown mug bonks off one of the rats, with depressingly little effect, though the rat lets out an angry squeal.

Darya misses with her swing. The rats continue to swarm Darya, though the one smashed by Iomenna is now a flat rat cadaver.

The scrabbling beasts are unable to penetrate Darya's armor.

To your horror, the surging and bulging waves under the grain give way, and a swarm of smaller rats emerges. It moves to envelop Iomenna.

Iomenna must make a DC 12 Fort save or catch a disease, and another DC 12 Fort save or be nauseated!

This rat swarm is Tiny creatures, so it can be harmed with weapons, but takes half damage.

What the hell am I doing back here? I'm a freakin' PALADIN, I shouldn't be staying back like this!

Clamping down on her fear, Luci moved out onto the beam with a loud battlecry that seemed to be somewhere between fury and terror, before slashing at the rats enveloping Iomenna, trying to avoid hitting their group's leader.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Typical... finally get past my writer's block and the dice have other ideas.

"I can't fit in there too, I will just sink, I have to help them some how!" Sario peeks into the granary storage, seeing the Rats attacking her friends she moves back then allows her Druidic magic to infuse her.

Once the creature has formed Sario points at the rats and lets the beast go to attack the closest rat.

The paladins have trouble as the rats leap and prance, almost capering as if they are tiny demons. Sario's summoned fire beetle, however, has a little more success, and nips at one of the angry rats.

She calls out to those fighting inside the silo, "Back out! See if they'll follow!"

Seeing Darya start to move out, Luci did too to clear the way, glad to get away from the rats and hoping that Iomenna and Darya could get past the rat swarm safely.

You back out and slam the door shut. You hear angry squeaks and a tide of rats battering against it, but they aren't strong enough to open it from the inside, which is probably a good thing.

But what's your next move?

You can burn it down, but that's a lot of grain destroyed. Or just leave it, though the rats may eventually chew their way out through the wood.

Iomenna manages to disperse a swarm of rats with a mighty swing of her earthbreaker as she escapes from the hatch. The group has a chance to catch a breather.

Who's opening the door? Be sure to set yourselves up appropriately on the battle map!

Once you are all in place, you throw the door open. Another huge swarm of rats erupts out of the door, squeaking and biting. They crawl up on to Luci.

The rat swarm is AC 14. Remember that weapon attacks do half damage to it. Those of you standing next to the door (Luci, Merlin, Iomenna) can attack it as the rats swarm up and over Luci. Sario, your spear doesn't have reach, so it's out of range unless you move around to the other side of Kelly.

Please make your readied attacks now and we'll see if you disperse the swarm before it bites Luci!
