Lyntel speaks up with more confidence than she feels.

It is born flying within the clouds before it falls to the ground. It lives lying on its bed, cool and inviting. As when it dies, it runs dry. It is a river.

Very belated end of session:

Alignment - That poor, poor old man we tried to rescue. Go in pieces, for your death allowed me to stab the sh!t out of that pit demon.

Resolving Bathildas bond.

+3 from rest of end of session bring me to 9XP total and a level up. I'll be taking Bloody Aegis. I plan on using it.

In the waking world, the wood golem stares at Lyntel for a few tense moments. The arcane orbs of blue fire that serve as its eyes are unreadable, as are its wooden facial expressions. Finally, the golem steps aside and makes a sweeping arm gesture to welcome you to the Sea of Trees. He doesn't move another inch as you all walk past, into the Elven Lands.

The air in the Sea of Trees is heavily oxygenated, almost to an intoxicating degree. Merely breathing too deeply has, in legends, enticed heroes to sleep comfortably next to the road, never to awaken again. The homeland of the elves this may be, but the Sea of Trees still harbors great dangers, even to elvenkind.

As you make your way into the massive, sprawling forest, you feel a slight chill in the air. It's cooler here under the trees' canopy than it was in the open grasslands outside. The air temperature shifts from about 75 degrees and mild to 62 and nippy.

It's more common to see wild animals in the Sea of Trees than it is in mundane forests. Elves are the only two-legged race that is allowed permanent residence in the Elven homeland, so the animals come to trust bipeds as friends of nature. You see woodland creatures looking at you from trees overhead, or from the side of the trail. A raccoon even comes out onto the trail itself to peer curiously at you.

It's about 5 PM on May 16 when you enter the Sea of Trees. After about an hour's walk, Archepex notices something unusual. It's off the path by about 50 yards, but still visible from the trail...some kind of animal, pinned to a tree by an arrow. What do you do?

Dhice is enthralled by the forest, completely mesmerized by the cool, rich air, and is essentially walking around gawking at everything but wary of nothing. He is, for all intents and purposes, useless as a scout here.

Needless to say, he totally fails to notice the oddity that attracts Archepex's attention.

Archepex brings the party to a halt.
Hold here.
He slides into the woods to check out the oddity, but he isn't overly cautious like he would be in the outside lands. This is home, after all.

While Archepex is checking out the victim (I assume), Grigor is looking around in other directions, seeing if this a trick or ambush.
2d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 6) - 1 = 7
What here is not what it appears to be?

Grigor, you don't know what it is, but you see some kind of shape off in the trees. You only catch a glimpse before it moves off into a thick copse that blocks your line of sight. It's brown and big, but that's all you get from it before it disappears from view. It's too far off to hear. Maybe 50-60 feet off into the trees.

Archepex, you see that the animal is a raccoon, and it appears to have struggled a lot before it died. You immediately know three things when you look at the arrow and the body it has punctured. One, it killed the animal slowly. Two, it's of Skaven make. Three, this animal died within the last hour. Its body is unmoving but still has some warmth to it.

In addition, I completely forgot that I had a weapon enhancement. Could I have retroactively used that on my longsword since the demon-slaying?

Grigor takes off after the shape, leaving the path and entering the trees surrounding it. Lyntel follows him with Dhice, staying low to the ground with her slingshot, and Emma stalks after them all with her longsword and its magic bared to the air. Emma, go ahead and tell us what the enchantment looks like and what it does!

Archepex immediately seeks the creature out, but the thing was seen on the opposite side of the path from you as the dead raccoon. Even at a dead run, it'll take a few seconds to catch up to your moving friends, much less get close to your quarry itself.

Since it's so far away and through thick trees, how do you get the information from your 10 roll? Do you climb high up to get a look down on it, or do you rely on your elven swiftness to overtake your friends and get to the creature first? It'll be difficult but not impossible for you to catch up to Grigor, as he's got a head start toward the creature and at a dead run. I'll give you the information that you earned with your roll, I just want to know how you're acquiring this information in-character, so I don't just download the knowledge into your head.

Archepex's specific tribe isn't known as tree dwellers, scouts, and messengers for no reason. Pushing through the underbrush (sparse though it may be), or even gliding through it as Lyntel was doing, still binds one to the contours of the land. Archepex takes to the trees, running along a relatively level if somewhat meandering line toward his quarry. It's easy to pick up the mark's trail from above, and Archepex is soon caught up to Grigor. He leaps and swings like a monkey. You suddenly know exactly where his incredible reflexes come from. Not from years of martial training, but from years of making a jungle your high altitude playground.

For his part, Archepex felt truly Alive for the first time in years. An involuntary grin spreads across his face as he flies from tree to tree.

Emma's sword seems completely normal, unless you happen to catch a glimpse of it in her eyes. In the reflection, it wavers like it's seen through a deep pool of oil. Tendrils shiver and shake in a nebulous aura around the pommel. They are the eyelashes of the weeping orb in the pommel, reaching out towards Emma's neck.

Who know's what she actually sees...

The enchantment said +2 damage, but I wouldn't mind if it did something more... esoteric. Perhaps relating to death, binding, corruption, insanity or disease.

The Sea of Trees is so named partially because the elven peoples that live there can move through the trees as easily as a fish moves through water. Elves have been known to spend their whole lives never needing to touch the ground, if they don't leave in search of adventure, as many young elves do.

Overhead, navigating the familiar foliage of his home country, Archepex swiftly overtakes his friends navigating the thick undergrowth below. Even despite his speed, it's difficult to get a good look at the brown creature that Grigor saw - the creature has heard Grigor approaching and is fleeing. When it glances over its shoulder to look up at you, your eyes widen and you instantly recognize what you're looking at. The shaggy fur, the strangely human, yet animalistic eyes - in mountainous lands, the elves call these creatures yetis. This creature, here in the Sea of Trees, is known by another name: Sasquatch. These creatures are said to ride the line between consciousness and sentience, an old race but rarely seen. They are elusive and retiring creatures, as a rule, but it's difficult to shake an elven ranger on the trail.

Emma, I can see how +2 damage is a little dull. How about this: instead of a passive damage increase, when you land the killing blow with that weapon, you see through the tentacled eye, and are able to instantly ask the DM any Discern Realities question.

Archepex, your chase of the Sasquatch through the Sea of Trees would be worthy of song, and you push yourself to the very limits of your elven agility as you pursue the reclusive creature. Its swiftness amazes you; even with your height advantage and knowledge of the highways of the upper canopy, you're still barely able to keep up. Your chase leads you over hill and dale, the trees swaying in the winds as your footsteps lightly brush from branch to branch.

Finally you see the Sasquatch diving into a particularly dark copse of trees. You skid to a halt as Mule screeches overhead, alerting others that are just catching up to you of the danger. The Sasquatch has entered into a brandlewynn, a phenomena unique to the Sea of Trees. A brandlewynn is a slow-moving life energy made of a strange and ancient magic that flows among the trees, animating the lifeless and filling peaceful plants with a vindictive urge to violence. The elven peoples avoid brandlewynns whenever they encounter them, and warn their children not to stray too far from their families, lest a wandering brandlewynn engulf the child before it notices what is happening.

Like a clownfish fleeing into a sea anemone, the sasquatch has fled into the brandlewynn. Do you pursue?

Archepex glides to a halt perfectly balanced between two branches. He sighs in frustration of a quarry lost, but dares not enter the brandelwynn. He drops to the ground in front of the party.
It's gone. The sasquatch has eluded me by retreating into a place even I dare not go. Come. It's time we continued our journey.

Off in the distance, you hear a faint voice singing. Songs are known to attract the brandlewynn, and sure enough, the darkness begins to move off in that direction. Brandlewynn have been known to consume unwary travelers that are not aware of the danger, because they don't take physical form; they are detected by the influence they create on the wildlife. Much like how you can't see wind, you can only see what wind is doing.

Can I make a Defy Danger roll to tackle him out of the way of brandlewynn? If so, Dex?

I left for a weekend family vacation today so no full update but I will try to post tomorrow!

Sorry for not posting yesterday! Back now :)

The brandlewynn advances through the forest toward the off-key singing in the distance. The adventurers glance at each other, then move off through the forest in pursuit as one.

It's difficult to track a phenomena like the brandlewynn as it is defined largely by a feeling of dread and darkness. It's easier to focus more on the fire up ahead. When you reach him, Grigor, you bowl him over and take him completely by surprise.

You knock him over away from the direction the brandlewynn is, but it's still coming. The trees themselves begin to animate at the edge of the campsite, moving both toward the blond man and the rest of you as you approach the clearing. The very trees themselves begin to reach for you, seeking to wrap their vines and branches sinuously around your throats. What do you do?

Milo's screeching song is cut off abruptly as the bulky man slams into him. He recovers quickly from the surprise and tries to scramble to his feet.

Thank the gods someone found me! I've been lost in these woods for days. I don't even care if you're here to arrest me, I...

He sees the vines approaching and draws his trusty rapier.

Hold that thought...

I lash my blade at the nearest vine, bobbing and weaving to try to avoid getting caught in its snare.
