Good call. It'll definitely settle down. Kudos to Mooshy for staying on top of the initial pace though!

This isn't the first time I've been admonished for moving the action along a little too quickly. I get a little over-excited describing the action.

In case anyone is curious what a good benchmark is for posting speed that allows everyone to participate - let's try to keep it down to between 1 and 3 "action posts" per day, not including minor clarifications and RP. That should be a pace that everyone can enjoy. :)

I do not hold myself to these posting rules. (I can't, it wouldn't work!)

Hjalmar asked: "Btw, are enemies really supposed to get to just deal damage to us when we fail our rolls, while also getting to deal damage to us when they take their actions, with no rolls?"

Technically the enemies are only taking their actions when we fail rolls OR when we give Mooshy a "Golden Opportunity". So we're not getting double-dipped here as it might seem.

More specifically: A 7-9 result on Hack and Slash will sometimes lead to damage back on you, or some other complication. When you roll 6- then the enemies get to make a move, which can also be "deal damage" or, again, some other nasty complication (or both). None of those things requires any rolls, as the GM never rolls.

So yeah, things get ugly quickly, but that's half the fun of Dungeon World. It all happens fast and furious. At the table it's amazing how quickly a combat will develop and resolve. It's a huge treat if you love the narrative more than the mechanics.

Myk-Myk folded the letter and shoved it back into his tunic for the hundredth time. The Ulmrichs were old friends of his, and the news of Elise's demise had dimmed even his unshakeably sunny disposition.

It was easy enough for him to make his arrangements. Lynna had been gone for several years, The kids were grown with families of their own and his folks were more than capable of fending for themselves still. Even his partner Gerta was more than willing to take over his small practice.

So he packed up his bag, took up his walking stick , and whistling a merry tune marched out of the gates of Everpeak yet again. Answering the the call for a favor from old, dear friends.

He hadn't joined up with the crew until well after their Dragoon Days. Dhice he'd taken to immediately. He was well meaning, but unlucky, and if anyone needs Valayas help, it's the unlucky! Likewise Locrian was easy to talk to and amusing. They'd been able to compare notes on the healthcare of the group, and it was nice to be with someone who shared the same language - so to speak. Grigor himself was a handful. He certainly was his fathers son. Headstrong and fearless, he was always getting himself into trouble, but an oath is an oath and he was in it now.

He initially hoped Bathilda and Hjalmar could help keep Grigor out of trouble, but they've proven to be just as bad! The rest of the lot are good and reasonable, well, except for Rikard. Something not quite right about that one. He seems amiable enough, but, well, his diety seems most peculiar - not quite the bright and cheery goodness he's come to know with Valaya.

Myk-Myk is not previously known to Grigor, and he has no intention of revealing his relationship to Grigors parents just yet. He is not the mercenarys parent or babysitter, but has merely been tasked with trying to make sure the lad has an opportunity to survive his youthful indiscretions.

Excellent backstory writeup, Mykmyk, I hope your writing sets an example for others. Great stuff.

In regard to your question regarding Aid, Dhice, Aid rolls can be rolled after another player's roll has resolved. Even if that player describes their own failure, the events can be rewritten if another player succeeds at Aiding (or conversely, Interfering with) them. Obviously, within the fiction, you want to roll your Aid relatively soon after another player has acted, or else it won't make sense.

For everyone's reference: Aid or Interfere

Great, thanks Mooshy. I really enjoy playing that way with my live group, so that meshes nicely for me. Too bad Dhice botched that Aid roll for Grigori... but man I'm just piling up the XP here. Up to 5 now, if you can believe that.

Thanks for getting this running Mooshy, it's really cool the way its unfolding. I like your style! This is actually my first time *playing* DW. I've been running it for over a year for various groups, but I've never played. Totally love how rewarding the XP is on a 6-. I've been joking about my bad rolls but a greedy part of me is excited to see the character grow so quickly.

Glad you're enjoying yourself, that is the point after all! For my part, it's good to be back on these boards, DMing another game. It's been too long since I abandoned ship around here. :)

So for right now, the only experience we should be keeping track of is from failures, right? I have 3 of those. If we should be tracking EXP from alignment, etc., I have no idea if the groups of Skaven I've been fighting are considered "worthy" opponents, or not. I have been unarmed for most of it, etc. I have been taking serious damage trying to protect Dhice (note: I cannot protect him from his own magic), so should I know how much I am getting for that? Thanks in advance for the info.

Grigor, you're correct that typically a player only records XP when he rolls 6- on a move. Some characters have moves that say "Mark XP when..." but it's pretty rare. I think our Shapeshifter has one, where he can choose to accept some consequences from Mooshy (and gain 1 XP) OR turn them down.

When there's an appropriate moment in the narrative Mooshy will let us trigger the End of Session move, at which point we look at our Bonds, our Alignment moves, and the list of things shown on that Special Move. It's a good idea to make notes on things you do that you feel will earn you XP at that point, like Alignment or Bond developments.

That last bit is why one of my posts mentions that I'm hoping to resolve my bond with Grigor through my actions. I'm looking for something that takes you from "Grigor is wary of my abilities" to "Grigor respects my efforts but in battle one must succeed, not just try" or something like that. Basically I think you've probably seen the value of what I can do, but I'm too unreliable for a soldier like you.

What he said.

So it just occurred to me that the Pirate move Crazy leap, seems to be applicable in many many situations, not least of which is getting out of the way of things. Am I playing that right, or should I default to Defy Danger instead most of the time?

Could you link the verbage of the Move?

A bit confused why Hjalmar got hit. He would be more inclined to simply Defy Danger if Crazy Leap doesnt apply for getting out of the way.

A few days is no big deal. You can be indoctrinating your acolyte and trying to keep him away from the rest of us. :)

Hjalmar: You got smacked for your 3 roll on Hack and Slash. I tried to incorporate your successful crazy dive, your moderately successful first attempt at guiding the Rat-Ogre, and your completely failed second attempt. Hope that makes sense.

Rikard: Come back when you can, I understand having to be away. Anyone can be away from the campaign for awhile without being removed as long as they tell me it's happening.

Hjalmar, it's just my read of it but looking at that PDF (cool class, btw) I'm not reading Crazy Leap as a Defy Danger substitute. Looks to me like an awesome flavor move that would let you slash an important rope, or cut down a chandelier on our enemies, or something equally cinematic. Hack and Slash may or may not be appropriate on the "Slash at something" option; it'll probably depend on the narrative. But the Crazy Leap move doesn't give an option to spend hold to avoid something dangerous, so in my view it doesn't look like a Defy Danger alternative.

Just my 2 cents.

Probably correct.

I personally think performing Hack and Slash for the holds is appropriate enough. I mean, sure, it say "something", but the option to gain attention also says "Gain the attention of everything." as opposed to "everyone".

GM call at the end of the day really.

Definitely. You have to embrace a lot of "GM fiat" and run with it to get the most out of *world games. It goes with the territory, but pays off with super exciting, very cinematic fights like the one we just had. This looks like it'll be a very fun game!

Questions:
1. Can you take Multiclass Dabler more than once? I assume not because Multiclass Initiate exists.

2. Does Multiclass Dabler give you access to Advanced Moves, or just Basic?

Hjalmar; I'm going to rule that as long as you're defying danger by wildly leaping out of the way, that would fall under the purview of your basic Move. If that makes you better at Defying Danger on average, that's just the Pirate life.

Archepex: Who's updated his gear?

Grigor: You can take Multiclass Dabbler once for a Basic move, once for an Advanced move for levels 2-5. Ditto for Multiclass Initiate, once for Basic and once for Advanced between levels 6-10.

No hard feeling about that cultist? I sorta assumed Hjalmar wasnt really aware of what had been going down between the two of you, and he lives by the "only good rat is a dead rat" philosophy.

Any bond that may come of this would likely be on Rikards end.

I had to laugh when you straight up blasted him for max damage. Poor Rikard.

It sounds like Rikard is planning on trying to push forward the agenda of a dark, Cthulhu-type star god. Is this the potential infighting Dhice was looking for? ;)

Also want to take this time to point out that there will be times where I damage your weapons or armor as a result of a poor roll or if it's appropriate to the fiction. To repair weapons and/or armor, you can use a consumable, lootable resource known as Salvage. The conversion is 1 piece of armor = 1 Salvage, 1 Weapon = 1 Salvage. Only magic items can be Salvaged to repair other magic items. If any of you have played Fallout 3, it'll be similar to that - when you find old armor/equipment lying around, you can carry it with you as Salvage (or sell it off as normal). You use Salvage on a 1-to-1 basis for repairing damaged weapons and armor.

For example, if your armor has been damaged once, reducing its armor value by 1, it would take 1 Salvage to repair it to full effectiveness. If your armor has been damaged twice, reducing its armor value by 2, it would take 2 Salvage to repair it to full effectiveness. I hope that makes sense to everyone.

In order news I have learned today that if you type the word salvage often enough, it will stop looking like a real word...

Rikard is trying to push forward the party agenda, using the influence garnered by his Star God. Therefore increasing Star God influence increases the amount of aid that star god followers will be able to help us.

And ill use the fought cultists bond. (not sure how that resolves)

Not sure what this means. You're are going to foster bonds with those we fight and make them cultists, if you can?

You can have more than one bond with a person, if I remember correctly.

Correct, Archepex. And you can write bonds yourself that reflect the circumstances. You don't need to use the ones that are already written on the character sheet.

I was thinking an appropriate Bond would be: "Hjalmar shot my acolyte. I must teach him to understand that there are some enemies that can be made to serve the Lord of Stars, and therefore serve us." Something like that. Something you can work on and develop later as your characters interact. That, or something like "Hjalmar shot my acolyte; I must make him pay for that somehow." Depending on how you want to resolve the Bond. Remember, when you resolve Bonds with other PCs you get XP, and the more legitimate Bonds you have with a player the easier it is for you to assist them with rolls, so they're important.

Well, there's bound to be some friction between Dhice, Rikard, and Bathilda. She doesn't trust magic and definitely doesn't trust magic users. If you really wanted to stir things up, you could always walk in on her when she's not exactly decent. I know, I know. She'll sleep with anyone that catches her fancy, and she certainly isn't decent then, but there's a difference between letting someone see and someone stealing that peek. She's rather prudish like that.

Did we learn something new and important about the world?
Yup. The skaven have magic. I didn't know that.

Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy?
I think the rat-ogre counts

Did we loot a memorable treasure?
I did. Arrows that can't miss? Fantastic!

Bond with hjalmar to resolve: I have guarded you and you owe me. Resolved
I propose, "Hjalmar's weapon lacks finesse, thigh its killing power is undeniable. Time will tell who is the better marksman."

If he agrees, my XP will go to 6.

Alignment, Neutral

Does helping Mule with his feathers count?

Did we learn something new and important about the world? Yes, as Archepex said: the Skaven have magic, and specifically they are using Transmogrification magic! Crazy.

Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy? Agreed, Rat-Ogre was bad ass!

Did we loot a memorable treasure? If we count individual looting prizes we're going to get this practically every time. I abstain from voting: whatever the others think is fine with me. Mooshy, are we doing these 3 questions as individuals or does the entire group get a yes/no? I've always assumed the latter.

Dhice's own questions:
- Alignment: Good - Use your Conduit to help someone at cost to your body. Yes, I was protecting a very hurt Grigor, which meant I couldn't protect myself as well (and I paid a price physically for it).

- Bonds: __Grigor__ is wary of my power, for good reason. Definitely need Grigor's input here, but I'd like to change this to "Grigor might come to trust me again, but he doesn't see me as a reliable soldier yet."

Regardless of all this, I'm going to have at least 8XP which is enough to level. I'll get started on that.

I'm also going to add these bonds:
"Myk-Myk and his Goddess can treat my mangled arms. I will try to live up to his expectations."
"Bathilda must think I'm practically an enemy, I will find a way to convince her otherwise." -this one is because I repeatedly made everything worse around Bathilda, and the one success I had caused the ground to explode beneath her feet. Also Dhice is probably misreading her distaste for magic users.

I agree with Archepex and Dhice on the first two. On the third one, I think the arrows are interesting enough to count. That's not something you see everyday.

I've finally figured something for Archepex story wise.

Never again. He prays before the sun.

Never again. He prays beneath the trees.

Never again With every breath. Never again.

Archepex has been a scout for the Company for almost as long as there has been a company. You could say he was part of the furniture if he were ever in camp, but he isn't ever in camp. The elf with the feather tattoos flits into and out of camp like a leaf on the wind. He is always out-riding, scouting, and foraging for the Company. Some recruits even doubted his existence at first.

Over the past six months relatively little had been learned about him. He is skilled at his job, that's for certain. And Mule was named for his stubbornness. And his almost obsessive dedication to his job is born of atonement. What Archepex is atoning for remains a mystery, but one thing is certain. Never again.

Interesting. I look forward to figuring out what horrible thing happened to your character, so that I can do everything in my power to bring it about and horrify you again. ;)
