Yumi Ken – The daughter of a peasant girl trained by a Master Kensai. I really like it, and I can definitely make use of the Yoshi family at a later date in the campaign. I will think on the Monk from the background as well.

I'm happy to elaborate on the monk, or to let you do it. He seemed to me to be in that grey area where I might be stepping on your toes if I wrote him in too much depth, but I imagine him as one of the monks who travels and trades, who sees Yumi when he returns to the monastery and sort of monitors her progress.

I thought he might be the one who would give her (or point her towards) the blade (the bladebound archetype thing). Though, I also thought it might be awesome if it were Shugi's sword, to be pried from the cold, (possibly un)dead hands of Yoshi Hayao.

Do you have three traits? Rescued, Adopted, Keeper of the Ancestral Scrolls...

Oops. As I mentioned, the character was originally built for another game. That GM gave the campaign trait as a bonus. I'll drop keeper of the ancestral scrolls. It's the least important.

I do believe the samurai needs some archetypes, honestly. I tend to shy away from 3PP material, just on the offchance that it's as broken as one of the base classes I saw (dragonrider-knight-something-or-other, was completely broken. literally had the best things of every class, BAB, HP, all saves, feats, spells, dragon mount, was just nuts.) Thankfully the sword saint is about as archetypal and iconic as samurai get. the basic samurai is, IMHO, just too much like the cavalier, even as an "alternate class." It could have used something to set it apart more, really.

So, when is it proper to use OOC text Instead of just posting to the discussion forum?

And are Italics thoughts in character?

Bold seems pretty straight forward; character's speech.

Any other tricks of the trade I should know? Even if not accepted, I think I may just keep applying to give this medium a whirl.

Generally you'll OOC to directly ask the DM a question, like

Seranov wrote:
Can I roll a Sense Motive check on the shopkeep to see if he's trying to swindle me?

or to say things related to the current situation with the other party members that your characters may not know. Gotta be careful not to get metagame-y, but I use it to complain about my awful rolls all the time! ;)

I tend to use italics for emphasis. I put quotation marks around things spoken out loud, and both bold and italicize thoughts. That's just me, though.

Thanks!

Greg

no way for me to know that you werent having them escape. The events as I put them down in my background don't may not be what actually happened. They are just what my character has been told happened.

Made a mistake on character backstory.

the situation with his parents needs to be reversed. Mother dead and father missing

@Greg: I find that formatting with bolds and italics can make it pretty easy to tell what's up, as long as you're consistent with it. I tend to bold and quotation things that my character actually says. I often use italics on internal thoughts; the trick with those is to separate them from the main paragraph so they're not just emphasis.

as far as OOC vs. discussion thread, if it's just a quick thought or question that applies directly to the situation, OOC chat is probably appropriate. If it requires some actual discussion or is outside the context of the scene at hand, maybe the discussion thread is better.

All my opinions and experiences color these thoughts, btw. If the GM has a preferred proposition, we'll go with that.

With a final exam today, I had not taken the time to read the directions fully and so failed to introduce Haruka to the Twilight Monastery. I have expanded her introductory story to fill that lack.

Spoiler:
Haruka knelt praying to the Lady of Chrysanthemums, while playing her samisen. She could hear the clack clack of weapons as the monks practiced in the central yard beneath her. She enjoyed the last moments of the cool afternoon, knowing that she would have to attend the dusk ritual within the hour.

Life in the monastery was comfortable and no more tedious than that of her ancestral home. Her welcome was begrudging and she sent a prayer of thanks to Shelyn that Master Samuru had recognized the obligation owed his long-deceased sister, Haruka’s mother.

It was far more customary for young women fleeing marriage to seek out a nunnery, for tradition held that those married to the gods could not then be married to mortal men. Haruka’s father had anticipated that eventuality however and taken great satisfaction when informing her that all of the local nunneries were being watched. No temple would be willing to cross the prefectural governor, at least none of those under his jurisdiction.

Her escape from the family compound had no doubt been the providence of the Lady herself. With the gate magically unlatched, a songbird led her to the river and a small group of travelling troubadours heading north. Trusting the goddess, she dirtied her face and abandoned her silks, pretending to be a commoner. The next six months had been some of the best in her life, playing the samisen for her dinner and staying but one step ahead of her father’s retainers.

It wasn’t until Jyito that she remembered her mother’s stories of her brother, the famed masked fighter and his temple in the Forest of Spirits. It had always sounded so romantic and she hoped that her father, ever the pragmatist, had forgotten the story completely. Passage had cost her samisen but upon hearing her play, the ship’s captain had returned it, claiming to hear the ghost of his daughter in the melancholy notes.

With luck, her father would not think to look for her so far north and she would be able to wait out her birthday in safety here. Something would have to happen then for her uncle would surely consider his duty discharged once his niece reached her majority. The forces of the heavens themselves would not be able to keep her father from marrying her to LiFong if he caught her then, no matter how old she was. Did a land exist where her father’s influence could not pull her back?

Haruka spent the next hour daydreaming, sailing aboard a huge ship with many decks and multiple masts, their white sails billowing in the full breeze. She knew not where she travelled in her dreams, but the men around her were all truly strange to the eye and spoke no language she recognized.

Starting awake, Haruka realized she was almost late for the evening chant. Hurrying down the stairs, she hoped she made it on time, unsure if her welcome could bear disrupting the most sacred time of the day. The giant ship and strange men faded from memory but the feeling of peace remained. Haruka knew it would all work out, somehow, if she simply followed her heart.

I will update her character sheet for the additional five points and purchase two traits after a bit of searching. One will be to make Perform a class skill for her. The other will probably reflect her deep devotion to Shelyn, the Lady of Chrysanthemums.

Haruka would be a good fit for the Diplomat or the Priestess, preferably the latter. As a devotee of the Goddess of Beauty and Love, she would be both unsuited and uninterested in the militant or espionage positions.

Here's a handy guide, Greg. Hope it helps.

Good stuff! Still reading. Much of it is very similar to RP advice for NeverWinter Nights RP servers.

Really appreciate your work in the thread and lots of good advice for a newfellermelad like me.

Thanks!

Greg

Liberty's Edge

Good read on that guide, Mamoru. Added my two cents to the thread, have a look for some further advice.

well i believe today is the deadline on submissions

Whoo, this looks to be a great campaign. I hope I'm in under the deadline.

May I present Makiko Hideo, Aasimar Zen Archer for consideration?

As far as position goes, initially Makiko will be drawn to the Warden position, as she loves being in nature. As her confidence grows, she would be well suited to be Councilor.

A small questions:

May I switch Celestial for the Auran language? It suits her backstory and her Garuda heritage.

is this game still recuiting?

NO! My entire character for Xiang Gong didn't post!

I wrote up an entire history, appearence, and crunch for a human Zen Archer and it didn't post. I had written it in word, but word kept crashing on me... so I moved it over here and then I just hit post and I got an internet connection error. Wow. Just wow.

I guess the cosmos really doesn't want me in this game.

EDIT: it looks like someone submitted a Zen Archer as well. Oh well. Good luck everyone.

I've finished updating Haruka. Her new stats are in the alias as are her spells and the continuation of her story. She is now ready to begin.

Her two traits are intense artist (+1 to 2 perform skills, makes them class skills) and inner beauty (1/day +4 to one bluff, craft, diplomacy or perform roll).

Thanks for the chance to apply, regardless of whether or not she makes it in, this character was a lot of fun to make.

That's the spirit, Haruka. The character will find its way into the right game, even if it isn't this one. The fun's in the creating for me. If I come up with a character I had fun thinking up, I just file him for later. Eventually, someone's going to start a campaign that fits just right, and I'll be like OMG I've got the PERFECT character! then I pull it up instantly out of nowhere and everybody's all WHOOOOAAH this guy's awesome at making characters! And boom, you're in just like that.

Well you get the general idea anyway. Keep those masterpiece characters intact and someday they'll find their place.

Sorry LT, I know how frustrating it is to lose so much work. I had that happen a few times. The system seems to time out after a while. So I starting "copying" everything before I hit post.

If you can get the basics up mebbe DundjinnMasta will let you flesh out details later. Of course I would like *my* zen archer to be chosen, but I know how much it sucks to lose a character you worked hard on.

Oh... and I remembered my other question for our gracious GM: If I roll a % off the alternate racial chart, am I obligated to take it? Or can I revert back to the default (detect invisibility in this case) if I don't like it?

Thanks for the consideration and good luck everyone!

Makiko - It was technically done above already, but it wasn't really with my approval (I had said they could roll for it, but I failed to specifically say after the trait was chosen) but I didn't disallow it so I will extend you the same courtesy once. Also I just got home from work so you made it under the deadline.

LurkingTyranny - Ouch, just ouch.

Yay! I made it under the deadline!

1d100 ⇒ 49
EDIT: ooh, just 1% away from what I really wanted: +2 to wisdom. But still, a permanent +1 to Reflex saves isn't bad. I think I'll keep it. I'll probably use it more often then detect invisibility (I say now).

Oh, and my first question was... Can I substitute Auran for Celestial as a starting language as it suits her heritage (plumekith) and background story?

Thanks

Makiko - I will allow it.

These are the final submissions as per the deadline. I will have a final selection for the game in the next few hours as I go over them again and decide how the puzzle will fit together.

Seranov – Hideaki Reimei – Human Fighter (Lore Warden) - Marshal
Marko – Tsai Tao – Tiefling Paladin – Warden or General
Adventurer#33 - Tatsuyoshi the Black – Kitsune Samurai (Sword Saint) – General or Royal Assassin
Daynen - Mai Seori – Human Samurai (Sword Saint) – Grand Diplomat
Nylissa - Yumi Ken – Human Magus (Kensai) – Warden
MPCampbell - Haruka – Human Summoner – Anything CHA-based (?)
Greg Wasson – Taliv – Sylph Ninja – Spymaster
John M Baker – Tampalasan – Human Wizard - Magister
Doomed Hero - Mamoru Onitora – Half-Ogre Samurai (Sword Saint) – General or Assassin
Edward Sobel - Lang Fei - Human Monk - Marshal or Councilor
Apocalypso - Makiko - Human Monk (Zen Archer) - Warden or Councilor

Tune in later...

We need a waiting room to pace in.

Dark Archive

Heh, I know that feeling.

Good luck everyone. I'm sure you're all as eager as I am!

Haruka would prefer Grand Diplomat or High Priestess, but would fill whichever role she was most needed in.

The General/Marshal/Assassin/Spymaster/Warden - these would not work for Haruka.

The Magister/Treasurer - These are not very good fits, but she would be willing to try.

The Councilor ensures that the will of the citizenry is represented. Wis/Cha - This would not be a bad fit for her as she would be drawn to the common people and want to look out for them but would not be ideal.

The Grand Diplomat oversees international relations. Int/Cha - Haruka would be very good at this.

The High Priest guides the kingdom's religious growth and sees to spiritual needs. Wis/Cha - This is Haruka's preference. She is extremely religous and very close to her deity.

This selection process was nail-biting for me as the characters are really good but unfortunately this game is not intended for 11-players so I had to choose. For my own illogical (which means I am not going to explain them because they may or may not have been reason behind them)...

I have selected the following characters...

Daynen - Mai Seori – Human Samurai (Sword Saint) – Grand Diplomat
Nylissa - Yumi Ken – Human Magus (Kensai) – Warden
Greg Wasson – Taliv – Sylph Ninja – Spymaster
John M Baker – Tampalasan – Human Wizard - Magister
Doomed Hero - Mamoru Onitora – Half-Ogre Samurai (Sword Saint) – General or Assassin
Apocalypso - Makiko - Human Monk (Zen Archer) - Councilor

Again for those that did not make it, I apologize. There was nothing wrong with your characters. These above characters just became part of the vision as I looked to tie things together.

For those six that I selected I have created an OOC thread.

Alright, thanks for the consideration.

Good luck to everyone else, and I hope you guys enjoy the game. :)

oh well thought I had a good submission

does anyone know a game that could use a monk?

You had a good submission. As I said all of the submissions were really strong, but I was only selecting six of them.

I know...now on to the next recuitment...I knew I souldn't have bookmarked the thread (bad luck omen)

Thank you for the opportunity to apply. I'm sure it was a very difficult decision.

Good luck to everyone that got in, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

no discouragement, you guys. You keep that chin up and keep applying. you'll get in one way or another.
