As for characters, I'm more than willing to adapt my character to fit the party's needs, at least for this mini-campaign that we're using to get to know each other. (For certain APs that I've briefly looked into, (by which I mean I read the player's guide and nothing else) there are definitely certain types of characters I'm more attached to. Of course, that's not important right now.) I have a myriad of character concepts I want to try out, and I'm not too terribly attached to one in particular, especially since these are "throw-away" characters.
Some of my ideas include: Ifrit Fighter (Dervish of Dawn), Human/Half-Elf Fighter (Crossbowman), Human (Varisian) Arcanist (Harrow Society Student), and plenty more. Once again, at this point I'm fairly malleable.

I would like to use Deep Magic by Kobold Press. If that source is allowed, then I would like to make wizard, ;likely an evoker. If necessary I can make a Medium or Occultist designed to fill in a needed role.
I will allow the use of Deep Magic. I have the book/PDF and the Hero Lab spell package.

I presume that you are a backer, then?

Yes, I backed the Deep Magic kickstarter.

Based on what I see in the AP experience/interest matrix, I'd like to propose the following short list of Adventure Paths for consideration as our starting AP. Keep in mind that actually completing a full six-chapter AP is a rare achievement, even among established in-person gaming groups. So, we might want to take more of a "taste test" approach and be open to switching to a different AP once we finish the first chapter if the group is not really getting "into it."
•Rise of the Runelords (Anniversary Edition) (start with Chapter 1, play through as far as the group wants)
•Curse of the Crimson Throne (start with Chapter 1, play through as far as the group wants)
•Council of Thieves abridged (start at Level 3 with Chapter 2 and play through Chapter 4)
•Kingmaker sandbox exploration intro (start with Chapter 1, no kingdom building by the PCs, and only play through Chapter 2)
What do you guys think? Are you OK with the idea of only playing parts of an AP? Are you concerned about not reaching higher levels with a shortened AP? Any other thoughts, good or bad?

It sounds like a plan.
EDIT: Which would we start with?
That's what we need to discuss and probably vote on. Which of these choice(s) would be your top pick(s) as our starting AP?
I'm leaning towards Curse of the Crimson Throne (almost universally rated as the "best" Paizo AP) or my abridged Council of Thieves (because I think it would be a cool mini-AP starting with the "Six Trials" murder play and ending with a confrontation with Liebdaga the Twin).

I for one think that we should not play Rise of the Runelords. We have someone in the midst of our group who's already played it, is spoiled on it, and it would not be as optimal of an experience for them.
I'm not entirely cool with only playing parts of APs, that seems to defeat the purpose of the campaign. However, if we're to go by these restrictions and nothing else, my vote goes to Curse of the Crimson Throne.
This being said, if we do choose Curse, which seems to be the direction we're headed in, I already have a character in mind I'd like to play. Human Ranger, with the Urban Ranger and Skirmisher archetypes. A bounty hunter type of fellow. Silas is the name. He's been an idea of mine for several months now, and Curse seems to be the perfect place to play him. I'm just laying this on the table right now.

Curse of the Crimson Throne it is!
Please follow the general character creation requirements that I sent out before to create a Level 1 PC using 15 point buy (this is in addition to your "throw away" PC for the intro sessions).
It will take me a while to get set up to start the AP. Let's plan on 3 intro sessions on 12/5, 12/19 and 1/2. This would give us a tentative AP start date of 1/16/16.

Would it be better to start discussing our character ideas for Curse now, or should we wait until closer to projected start time?
I don't see any reason to wait if you already have idea(s) in mind. No need to make a final decision until just before we're ready to start, though.
It's also good to have a backup PC in mind in case your main PC meets an untimely end. :-)

Just out of curiosity... Why 15 points rather than 20?
I was wondering this myself, and did some research on it. Apparently, the Adventure Paths are written with the intent of a 4-player 15 point build parties. I personally dislike it, I feel like 15 points is kinda underpowered for my own tastes, but it's up to the DM.

I have a gnome mesmerist with the vexing daredevil archetype in mind, but I'm open to changing to whatever the party needs.
I am going to drop the gnome aspect in favor of being human instead. That will make it easier to fit into the Korvosan setting. I like the idea of a Yuri Geller type mesmerist that makes a living doing readings and performing tricks for the upper class.

I made a reanimated medium beater just in case my occultist bites the dust.
Verzen, are you thinking of playing a Battle Host Occultist in the AP as well? Or are you still thinking in terms of the mini-campaign?

Dude, that sounds awesome. I could kinda see him being from Cheliax, because the nobility is so strict there, and it could definitely be a way to move your way through society.

Yes, APs are designed for 4-player, 15 point build parties. So, with 5 players you should be good and I shouldn't have to make any significant adjustments to encounters (other than using the Pathfinder-converted monsters and NPCs).
