The Mummy’s Mask

Book 1: The Half Dead City

The bustling desert city of Wati is near bursting with excitement. Adventurers from every corner of the Inner Sea region have assembled here beneath the hot Osirian sun to explore the tombs of the city’s necropolis, waiting only to be assigned their first sites for exploration.

Surrounding the participants, the public has gathered to observe the ceremony as well. There is a festival-like quality in the air, and numerous street vendors are hawking goods and refreshments to participants and spectators alike. Some merchants have even brought what can only be considered adventuring gear to sell as last minute convenience items to explorers, while others advertise that they’ll buy recovered treasures and antiquities from those who visit their establishments.

In front of the imposing edifice of the Grand Mausoleum, an immense awning has been erected between decorated pillars in the market to provide shade for the priests of Pharasma overseeing the lottery. Beneath the awning, two urns sit atop a table elevated a few feet above the ground on a wooden stage constructed for the event. The high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, sits behind the table, while two acolytes confer with her at either side.

Numerous adventuring groups stand in small clusters near the stage, made up of multiple nationalities and races. Most keep to themselves, but some teams engage in quiet conversation with other teams, mostly speculating about what they’ll likely face in the necropolis.

Okay, kids. Why don’t you go ahead and tell me what the <<INSERT TEAM NAME>> does here, as you’re waiting in anticipation for the lottery to commence.

:-p

I figured we could get a few posts running while you decide on what you want to do about the name. It really should be resolved by tomorrow though.

"Sure, they're all about pomp and circumstance," Kwin says to Torin. "I get it. And any excuse for a party, I'm all for that. But why bother with a lottery when we're clearly the most qualified team? Can't they just give us our assignment and let the losers get out of the hot sun already?" He squints up at the sky in mock annoyance, the hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

From the spot with the most shade available (which wasn't much), a voice came from a roughly-human-sized swath of desert-brown cloth. Though one couldn't see a face under all of that hot weather protection, the voice was clearly feminine.

"Pharasma," the voice said, "like most Gods, likes things done in a certain way. And Her priests, like most priests, take themselves just a little too seriously when it comes to telling other folk about said 'hows' and ways." Though one couldn't see it, the grin was clearly audible in the speaker's next words.

"And they can't just send the 'losers' away, the merchants would riot."

"Not all gods are so stuffy," replies Kwin with a chuckle. "Nor so obsessed with death," he adds in quieter tones.

"You're right about the merchants, I guess. But all this waiting around is boring!"

Djehuti gestures at the nearest confluence of adventuring groups. "You could always talk to the competition. It couldn't hurt as long as you take whatever they say with a grain of salt."

Like Izra, the tall, thin, dark skinned elf was swathed in hot weather gear, but his keffiyeh is loose around his neck rather than pulled across his face and his white robes billow in the occasional gusts of wind.

Seeming to lounge in the heat even while standing, Koshukhep watched the merchants run to and fro among the competition. He too owned pale robes and keffiyeh to combat the heat, but in honor of their purpose here today, his shoulders and black mane were bare. Brass gleamed from his chest and arms, as well as from his armor, but if the metal was uncomfortable in the heat, the huge catfolk did not show it.

I did a quick sketch of my image of Koshu here. I know armor should technically cover, say, your vitals, but I was hoping to fluff it as being the bracers, kilt and greaves that he wears. If that's a no-go, I guess I'll have to redraw. :P

Finishing off a spit of meat he had purchased from one of the enterprising vendors, he gazed hungrily at another, but his friends knew he had little coin left to spend. "I agree with you, Kwin," he rumbled, his patience spent now that he had nothing more to amuse himself with. "We are more qualified than the others, though we have not proven this to the Pharasmans." His golden eyes flicked toward Ahmed and Suri. "Our findings have more value than ever they could know."

Yawning lazily, which displayed a disconcerting number of sharp white teeth, he stretched and rolled his massive shoulders. "Perhaps a small wager on a bit of wrestling could pass the time," he mused, perking up a bit as he looked around at their rivals, a measuring look in his eyes.

Kwin laughs. "You're built for that, I'm not. And while I'd welcome a little swordplay with a worthy opponent... well..." He scans the crowd briefly. "Let's scuttle both those ideas. We don't want to demoralize the other teams too badly. It'll be disappointing enough when they're not chosen," he declares.

Leaning in conspiratorially he says quietly, "I think the whole lottery thing is a sham to avoid political strife and hard feelings. Would you want just anyone running around in your ancient crypts? The 'winners' have been pre-selected. I don't know who else they'll permit in but mark my words, we'll be among them -- proof that they chose the best rather than relying on chance."

He digs into his belt pouch and flips a gold piece to Koshukhep. "Here, I see how you keep eyeing the food. Occupy yourself with another kebab," he says with a grin. "My treat."

"This is ridiculous." Ahmed mutters. As much as he enjoys being out in the sand and sun once again, the festivities were rapidly getting to him.

He'd donned a robe with sleeves long enough to hide his shackles, and demanded Suri keep the hood on her own up to try and cut down on them being noticed. 'They needn't know there are greater treasures up here.' He'd told her with a sweet smile, like the old Ahmed, but in his eyes she had seen a worry that seemed uncharacteristic of him. At least, of the him she remembered. She longed to ask him about what had happened, but he stiffened and went silent whenever she brought the subject up.

"Don't be silly," Suri replies now with a smile. "This is a lovely celebration. The thrill of the search, the taste of adventure. These are things which should not be forgotten." Her eyes dance with excitement as she looks between the different groups. "These people came from all over, just for this. The hope, the strength. It's inspiring. Were our needs not pressing, I'd gladly let any one of them take our spot."

Her enthusiasm was rather contagious, but Ahmed still held fast against it. "It's not that," he replies, largely agreeing with her. "It's the entitlement." His eyes dart to Koshukhep as he speaks. "They all believe themselves the most qualified to explore these ruins." He explains. "But what right do they have? It is not their civilization. It is not even their land. Before the mages learned to control the D'jinn, this entire desert was ours."

Suri looks to Ahmed with an amused look. "Deserts come and go grain by grain, dear Ahmed. They pick over their own bones now, and one day they will pick over ours. It is the way of things. You know this." Suri smiles at the rest of the party through their exchanges, pleased to have found her own band of adventurers who are both confident and excited.

"I do know." Ahmed replies, nodding. "But I still fear what they may find." Subconsciously rubbing his wrist, he mutters. "There are things which should be remain buried."

Koshu grabbed Kwin's coin from the air, his head turning to follow a passing vendor, but rather than use the money to buy another stick, he regretfully passed it back to Kwin. "You are kind to offer, but I will earn enough to eat my fill many times over once we win the political lottery," he rumbled. "Until then, it is only right that I fast." Though how he could claim to be fasting after the amount he'd consumed that morning, completely aside from the snacks from the vendors, was a mystery.

"Honorable Ahmed, there are also those which deserve to be found," Koshu reminded him gently. The catfolk thumped his chest. "And we shall find them. I have seen the signs." Of course, Koshu had also seen signs in the flight of birds, a lucky win at dice and the pattern of fallen coins, but nothing would convince him that these things were other than signs of the blessing of the Old Gods, markers on the way to fulfilling a prophecy. He was sure there must be a prophecy, even if he hadn't heard of it yet.

Unseen beneath her covering, Izra's eyes narrowed, briefly. While she was not a priestess, and had her own issues with the clergy of most churches - including that of Pharasma - she still bristled just a bit when someone dismissed her Goddess as merely 'obsessed with death.'

But Kwin was young, and Izra couldn't very well set about correcting him after having just taken her own jab at the priests who took themselves too seriously. With a shake of the head, she smiled.

He was sure there must be a prophecy, even if he hadn't heard of it yet.

Izra smiled again. Again, it went unseen. She appreciated Koshu's search for prophesy and guidance from beyond. Pharasma was a goddess of prophecy, after all. And after her own experience, Izra had some fairly strong opinions on the matter.

"Koshu," she said, "I am sure you are correct - as is Kwin, to a certain extent. Pharasma has seen us here. While the draw is, I am sure, not fixed, the results are predetermined. Many of the groups here will be given permission to investigate tombs. Ours will be one of them. And we will find those things that are ready to return to the world again." The mound of clothing moved in what was probably a shrug.

Djehuti remains silent on the signs and portents of the northern gods, as always. He tends to keep his thoughts on the pantheon of the Inner Sea to himself, save for Nethys, who he often conflates with Thoth. On the topic of politics, though, the El-Sheladan is quite vocal.

He nods at Izra. "And I am sure scarabs have changed hands as offerings to the church in hopes the goddess will smile upon certain parties. So long as we are granted entry it does not matter. I am certain the lottery will be kind to us today."

Ahmed nods to Koshu, looking pleased. "Indeed, the Sun is high, and a better sign I could not ask for. Ra stands with all of us today." Suri smiles gratefully at Koshu. The Catfolk seemed to be having the most effect on Ahmed since his revival, acting as something of a familiar link to his past.

As Izra and Djehuti speak about the Lottery he turns towards them with a scoff. "Permission." He replies, almost spitting out the word.

Looking almost embarrassed by Ahmed's behaviour, Suri looks to the others to explain. "We D'jinn do not believe in many of the laws of the other races. Years of..." she searched for the right word for a moment before giving up with a sigh and calling it what it is. "slavery... has made our people reticent to go along with such things."

Ahmed's eyes darken. "Let's see them try to keep us out."

Resting a hand on his shoulder, Suri looks into his eyes. "Many things have changed, Ahmed. Most of the races work together now, including our own. Look at all the people here, and how many of them come from different walks of life." Her voice softens. "It is not the same world you once knew. If we are not chosen, we will find another way. I promise."

Ahmed lowers his eyes and nods softly. "You're right, of course." Speaking up, he asks, "How long until the announcement is made?"

Kwin's demeanor grows solemn as he listens to the exchange, and at the suli's question, he speaks up.

"Ahmed, I don't think people are quite so noble as Suri presents them. These 'different walks of life' working together... some of it's nothing more than a necessary evil, driven by greed. But she's right: People are more enlightened now than they were centuries ago."

He pauses and looks askance in thought. "Well, most of them, anyway."

He clears his throat and continues. "What was done to you, that was wrong. I'm sorry it happened, and you deserve to be free of it. This is a hollow promise because we're going to be chosen, but if it somehow came to pass that we weren't..."

He falters, realizing he has no idea how he would accomplish what he's about to promise, but continues anyway. "I would get you in. Somehow. And I would see you a free ma... er... suli. I make that pledge to you."

He looks at Suri. "To both of you."

Seemingly taken aback by his own seriousness, Kwin blinks and grins. "Now lighten up, would you? We'll get in, 'laws of other races' or no 'laws of other races.' And you will have your freedom when it's time. Da always says, 'Everything works if you let it'."

Torin rouses himself from whatever mental reverie he was adrift in.

Clearing his throat, he spits a gob of awfulness indifferently to one side.

"Most of these adventurers look wetter behind the ears than even you lot," he rumbles in a deep, gravelly voice. "They'll probably all die, if they go in. Just mean more treasure for the finding when our number does come up."

The ceremony begins when the high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum rises to her feet and looks over the crowd. Sebti seems surprisingly young to hold such a distinguished position, but she has a confident air of authority. After calling for silence, she begins with an invocation to the Lady of Graves, followed by a brief history of the founding of the necropolis.

When Sebti finally concludes, she takes a moment, raises her arms dramatically into the air and says, “Let the lottery begin!”

There is an explosion of applause from all in attendance. When everything finally quiets down she continues.

“Although many of you have requested specific sites to explore, we must leave these matters to fate. The Lady of Graves is a far better judge of destiny than we of this mortal sphere.”

”The gates of the necropolis will open at sunrise tomorrow. Use this evening to prepare yourselves for the task ahead. Let these rules guide you in your endeavors in this holy place: remember how this came to pass, every slave’s hut is a memorial, and honor the departed. May you go with the Lady’s blessing.”

Remember How This Came to Pass, Knowledge History DC 15:
The Plague of Madness was unleashed upon the city of Wati while religious authorities were engaged in infighting. This rule is a reminder that the necropolis remains a holy place, and those who engage in needless conflict and banditry are not only criminals, but accursed.

Every Slave’s Hut Is a Memorial, Knowledge Local DC 15:
Every structure within the necropolis is a testament to the people who lived and died in the city. Explorers must not desecrate or vandalize standing structures and tombs, but preserve them as the memorials they were intended to be. Some structures may be trapped or decrepit, but willful and unnecessary destruction will not be tolerated.

Honor the Departed, Knowledge Religion DC 15:
The dead should be treated with dignity and respect. If the interred need to be disturbed to recover an antiquity or relic, they should be returned to their resting places carefully. It is understood that the ancient dead are often brittle, but there is no need for the contents of a sarcophagus to be summarily dumped on the ground. This rule does not apply to the undead or other abominations.

As you wait for the lottery to begin you remember that should your marker be selected you are required to send a single representative to the front. Then you will be assigned your first of 3 locations within the necropolis.

After Sebti returns to her seat, the two acolytes accompanying her each draw a wooden token from one of the urns on the table. They present the token to an Announcer.

“The first site will go to -- The Band of the Black Fire!”

If somehow the rules slip you by you can easily ask someone later.

Izra had been expecting to hear the group's name called, but she hadn't expected it this soon. For a moment, she was flustered, and completely forgot all of the rules of the game. Then, after a moment, she remembered one of them, at least. With a nod, she began to make her way to the front. Then she paused.

"Djehuti," she whispered, "What do the three rules mean, again? I might need to know, in case they ask me to speak."

Ahmed has decent Charisma / Diplomacy as well, but personality wise I think Izra is definitely more suited to it, so yeah that's totally good with me.

Ahmed nods solemnly to Kwin, impressed and not for the first time with the Kitsune's character. Truly he was not as removed from the Catfolk cousins as Ahmed might have believed. At Kwin's declaration, Suri's face lights up. "We are grateful to have found such companions." She says with a deep bow.

As Djehuti explains the rules, Ahmed seems to relax some. "It would appear," he mused. "As if I spoke too harshly. The level of respect that they demand is indeed refreshing." Looking to Suri he continued, with a smile. "Perhaps you are right."

She nodded. "Sir Kwin likely is, too. Don't forget that people... are still people. The years have not have changed that."

At this, Ahmed looks taken aback but still smiles. "My, maybe the years have changed you after all. The Suri I remember believed the best of everyone." She laughs, but before she can reply, their group is announced, and the two D'jinn look at each other, with surprise, and hope, and fear, and longing for the future. Their expressions contain everything that they want to say, and as Izra walks up to speak for them, Ahmed and Suri intertwine their hands together, and stare towards the stage, smiling.

Ozra is directed to Sebti the Crocodile who stands.

"Welcome, I am Sebti the Crocodile, High Priestess of the Grand Mausoleum," she says, leaving yourself a chance to introduce yourself.

"Fate has chosen your band for this task," she says and points to a large map of the Necropolis. #23 on Map of Wati

"This is the tomb of Akhentepi."

She then give Izra a smaller map which shows the general layout of the Necropolis and the location of the tomb.

"If you have any questions, make them quickly."

"Izra, of the Kayal," Izra gave a half-bow. She let her veil down as she stood, revealing her face. In the semi-shade beneath the awning, blue-green light glowed faintly from her eyes - large, well-formed eyes, on either side of a long, straight nose, above high, elegant cheekbones. Her incredibly pale skin made her full lips look red in comparison.

Aside from her beauty, however, the lowered veil also revealed the high, silver-edged black collar and the small vial of holy water attached to the thin silver chain that held the collar closed. All of which were part of the dress uniform of her Pharasmin order.

Izra nodded. "Only one, High Priestess," she said, "what, if any, additional information do you have that might be of use to us in our task?"

I haven't been able to get this to come out right. That shouldn't sound demanding or untrusting of the High Priestess. The request is simply a pragmatic way of asking for any and all information that might be relevant. Pharasmins *are* supposed to be pragmatic, after all. The intent isn't that she's being an insolent smart-ass, just direct, and semi-clever. If you need a Diplo roll for that, I'm happy to provide one.

To clarify (again, late-night writing, sorry), the "high collar" referred to above is the collar of her uniform jacket (worn under the hot-weather gear), not like a pet-style collar. Not that there's anything wrong with those collars, either. :-) But that's not what she's wearing.

Sebti's eyes widen a bit when Izra reveals herself, but otherwise she seems unaffected. Izra gets the impression that she is not a woman who rattles easily.

"There is little else I can tell you about your task. Sadly our records are woefully deficient in regards to Akhentepi. However, should you manage to provide us with detailed maps and notes sharing your impressions of the site, the Grand Mausoleum could be persuaded to recompense you for your troubles."

Sebi nods her head respectfully, dismissing Izra, and then turns to greet the second lottery winner.

Izra nodded, replaced her veil, and made her way back to her companions. Once with them, she handed over the map, and related what she'd been told.

"It seems the Grand Mausoleum wants to make the best they can of a situation they have less control over than they would like. I'd suggest we make - and sell them - the maps and notes they're interested in."

"They're Pharasmin clergy. Pharasma's church does not approve of grave robbing, or of looting tombs. Respect for the dead is pretty high on the list of priorities for all of Her worshippers, in fact. But the Ruby Prince wants the city opened to just the kind of looting the church normally would oppose."

Izra's robes shrugged again, and she gestured with one arm at the people abd ceremony.

"All of this, it's their attempt to control the damage. To control and minimize the inevitable loss. And to gain or preserve whatever information they can. Pretty admirably done, too."

"Yes," Ahmed agrees, nodding. "I must admit that I am impressed as to how they have been handling things so far." As Izra reveals the name of the tomb that they are to be exploring, Ahmed searches his memory for any knowledge of Akhentepi.

Djehuti nods. "I think the current situation is more realistic than assuming the necropolis would stay undefiled simply because it is sacred ground. There are always thieves and foolish adventurers who ignore things like respecting a people's ancestors and warnings of deadly guardians. This way at least all the parties entering the ruins are identified and will be inspected on the way out. That may not protect the integrity of the tombs, but it will protect any truly powerful artifacts from being removed from Osirion."

"That seems to be the theory, anyway," Izra said.

"We're supposed to start our little adventure in the morning. Do we have any last-minute shopping to do," she looked around at her companions. It wasn't like they had much money to spend, after the last adventure, but she wasn't going to bring that up. Not this time, anyway.

Looks like we have the better part of a day to kill...

"Since we're not in this entirely for profit motives, maybe we should just give them whatever maps we draw out. Sometimes good will is worth more than gold coin. It might open the door to even more wealth."

Kwin frowns. "Speaking of wealth, I'm almost tapped out. If there are supplies someone thinks I should buy please speak up and I will. Otherwise I'm going to hang on to what I have left."

"On the other hand," he says brightly, "being not only selected but selected first calls for celebration! I definitely hear a tankard of pulque calling my name. And perhaps a serving wench or two as well," he adds with a grin. "Who wants to help me track down the best tavern for a little carousing tonight?"

"Bah, dead's dead. What good is gold to a corpse. Some people just can't get it through their thick skulls that you can't take it with you."

Torin spits, "I'm all for not upsetting the delicate sensibilities of the Pharasmins, but if it glitters and ain't bolted down, it's going in my pack."

Torin squints up at Kwin, "Old partner of mine liked to down a few bitters before a delve. Turns out hangovers have a way of dulling the senses a wee bit. Never did see what ate him, but I did bury what was left. Very. Small. Hole."

Swin laughs and slaps Torin on the back good-naturedly. "Nonsense! Your loss is regrettable of course, but I have more than enough acuity to sacrifice some for a worthy cause! Besides, senses get dulled while you're drinking; if anything they're sharpened the next morning."

"Especially for light and sound," he adds thoughtfully, remembering a particularly unpleasant hangover.

"Anyway, it's not like we're going to run into something challenging first thing in, yeah? Come on Mr. Grumpy, lighten up. A tankard or two of dwarven ale isn't going to do you in."

Djehuti shrugs. "Delicate sensibilities of clerics aside, remember that we will be subject to official review. The government's tax people will have a say in what we get to carry away."

He gives Kwin a small smile. "Dwarven ale isn't to my taste. Perhaps a tavern with very small cups might give me a taste of Thuvian brandy for what I have in my pockets."

Izra shook her head and hid her smile behind the veil she wore. This group hadn't been together long - less than a year, all told - but the personalities were strong, and had been fairly consistent, so far.

"They'll not be objecting to us taking the gold and glittery, Torin," she said, her smile evident in the tone of her voice, "So long as we do it gently, and don't go disrespecting the dead as we do."

In truth, Izra found herself closer to Torin's sensibilities than not. While she wouldn't stand for desecration of someone's final remains, she knew (better than most) just how little went with someone into the next life, and leaving items of power hidden away, when they could be being used to combat modern enemies, did not sit well with someone who grew up seeing just how badly those items were needed.

"The tax collectors will get their share - that's why the Ruby Prince wants the city opened to... 'recovery' in the first place - but there will be enough to go around. And if we find something that can help to free Ahmed, we can always make use of it before we bring it out here. It'd be nice to be able to finish that job."

She was very careful to not say, "and finally get paid."

"I don't remember any stories about this Akhentepi myself, or that part of the city, even. So I don't know what else we're going to need, specifically. A drink sounds like a reasonable purchase, though."
