10 minuets is always a lie! It is done but for the secret she knows. I will flesh some of it out and add scenes to different parts to better show her personality when I have more time. If there is anything I should alter I can do so.

I was anticipating something good from all your in-depth questions, and I was not disappointed! Thank you for such an immersive background!

Where We Stand
--For those who have not submitted a full character yet (either incomplete stats or incomplete background), remember final submissions are due Monday August 8 at 1159 PM Eastern. Incomplete submissions, especially lacking background, will not be considered.
--I will be looking over the existing submissions more closely tonight and tomorrow, possibly asking for a few more details here and there. These small changes or details aren't strictly due by the deadline.
--My guidelines for a strong application, in no particular order, are:
1) The character fits well in the world. Acknowledging what tribe you came from as an oread, or whether your character venerates the gods, etc, show me that you'll be able to interact with the setting from the get-go.
2) Completing the 10-minute background (it doesn't have to be perfect) and any other backstory helps me shape the plot and include NPCs that your character cares about.
3) Not power-gamey (though this is obviously not a problem with this group so far)
--Finally, please let me know if there are any other details of the world you would like to see. I'll be uploading a more detailed map of the different districts in Hearth in a few minutes, and I'll be interested to see where your character might live.

Would I be able to take the extra rage power to get some of the barbarian rage power? If not I completely understand but I figured I would ask.
And how would you feel about the Marked by Unknown Forces trait? This is basically for fluff but the symbol could be tied to the Fey who cursed her family. Some sort of symbol that does not make much sense currently but might give her a lead to the Fey later. This lets us take a little longer to figure it out since I have no idea what I want the curse to be.
As to the details I would like about the world could you give examples of what some of the religious ceremonies for the different group would be. Marriage ceremonies? And some typical superstitions? I love superstitions and they can lead to really fun role play.
Deaths Adorable Apprentice
Ok so my roommate had an idea of the curse from the Fey. Someone in her heritage slaughtered Fey and a curse was place on that bloodline. A blood price. The first child is always taken. This will continue until the blood is repaid.
How the child is take could be that they simply vanish one day. Not a happy thing for a young couple. A creature could show up and just take the child. Or the child could die. Other children can happen so the blood can continue to be repaid. Would something like this work in you game? If not I am sure we could come up with a fun option.
Brinn the Wit
Heya, I have kinda been obsessing about this a little bit, and I was trying to figure which instrument would potentially work best underwater. For normal human-type instruments, its pretty clear percussion is the best, realistically. However, that is not Brinn's style and he is undine! I was wondering if his wind instrument (currently a flute, but some type of horn would be okay) could be some kind of design that can work just as well underwater as above it. Maybe he switches a piece around, or covers a different set of holes on the flute so a liquid medium resonates properly. I don't think it would significantly affect gameplay, it's mostly a flavor thing. It would be tough to squeeze in a masterwork item given the starting gold, but perhaps something in the middle?, say 50g?
Yes I realize it is a bit silly to bring this bit of realism into a fantasy game, but it just keeps tickling...

Could you clarify what you mean with the Extra Rage power? All that does it give extra rounds of rage.
Marked by Unknown Forces looks fine, cool idea for manifesting the curse.
I'll be working on some example ceremonies and superstitions for you tonight.

Honestly just an extra 10 g should be fine, I don't want something that's just cool to be a punishment on your starting gold.
I like the idea of two 'settings'. A small piece that can click and cover different sets of holes, like you mentioned, sounds plausible enough to me. If you want to keep the flute, that's fine with me. Seems like a better trickster instrument.

So I have updated the profile to more clearly.
I almost have story completed and will have my basics up in a little bit
Need to spend rest of money other than that It looks like I am good to go.
Thanks for the update! I like the imagery of a tall, willowy sylph that bursts into sudden rages.

Yeah, I can see that working!
So was Kallik's older sibling taken, then? Or maybe she doesn't even know she has a vanished sibling?

From an earlier post, you mentioned that gilas is your surname (which to me roughly means last name). I have no problem with first and last names being combined, but what does that make "akoi"? Is that a family name? (as opposed to your profession's name, glass?)
If appropriate, would you mind editing the name to capitalize Akoi? I think you are allowed to do so before you post 10 times with a given name.

From Paxx: A little background for Brinn
** spoiler omitted **
Some additional background I'd like to see for Brinn:
--Deity is still to TBD. Does Brinn worship River?
--Do you want Brinn to be just arriving at Hearth at the open of the campaign?
--I'd also like to see the 10-minute background info, especially goals.
Miner Cotren
Hmm, did a 10-minute background, it means 10-minutes per question, right? ;-)
Also realized I managed to completely skip selecting skills.
The "free" skill point for "background skills" I've put into craft, but that was more of a childhood hobby, and probably won't advance further than the 1 rank in it. Will probably either use it to pick up further performs or switch to a profession later, if that's okay?
What does Fiordelise believe about her powers as a Skald? Does she think it comes from her (inner power, or skill), a gift from Volcano, or maybe even a heritage from her sylph ancestor?
Demon Lurking
Here is my "10 minute background" for Osric Ferret.
Background
Step 1: Background and Concept elements (at least 5) (history, description, personality)
* Osric is tall and emaciated, even for a sylph.
* originally from Light, he resides now in Hearth. He came following a Gasp mule on the run and wound up staying.
* works as a bounty hunter and private detective, sometimes for the city watch.
* he is willing to bend rules to get his quarry (ends justify the means).
* his brother Oswin Farshot, was an archer on the eastern front. He became addicted to Soot. When he couldn't pay his dealer, Oswin wound up dieing in the creation of Gasp.
* he's inspired in part by (the obvious) Sherlock Holmes, but also Constable Odo from Star Trek DS9, and a little bit Inspector Javert.
Step 2: Goals (one character, one player)
* he wants to end the trafficking of Gasp.
* I want him to learn how to fly. (Airy Step, and Wings of Air Feats)
Step 3: Secrets (one known, one unknown)
* he knows that the royal line (possibly far down the line of succession) of the North Tribe is involved in Soot production and Trafficking
* unknown to Osric, his landlord (an apartment / boarding house on the northeastern edge of the Duns) is one of the big bosses in the Gasp trafficking circuit. This is one of the reasons he never gets anywhere with his Gasp investigations.
Step 4: People (at least two allies/friends and one adversary)
* Marc v'Ranel (ally): ifrit city guard officer on vice.
* Jacob (who everyone else calls Cob) (ally) homeless undine informant.
* Pilgar of the West Tribe (adversary): Osric thinks this Oread landlord is a friend, but he is actually a Gasp kingpin.
Step 5: Three Memories, Mannerisms, or Quirks
* he is chaste and mostly vice free. (But does partake in the elen equivalent of caffeine on a regular basis.)
* he has fond memories of his childhood in Light. Before his older brother Oswin went off to the front and was never the same.
* he still secretly prays to Fallen Sky. He feels the maelstrom is its soul and the Breathless Valleys its body. If they can somehow be recombined, Sky might return to help fend off the Dark.

Here's the crunch for my paladin submission (RePete). She's a follower of the Volcano. If anything needs changed let me know please.
Working on the backstory and description. My backstory should (hopefully :-P) explain while a sylph is a follower of Volcano.
Similar question for Inam: do you want her to be just arriving at Hearth at the open of the campaign?
Miner Cotren
Updated the character sheet with a 10-minue background, still trying to find a decent image.
Couple of questions on Obedie's background:
--How long has he been in Hearth, or has he just arrived?
--What kind of work is he looking for? What was the strong motivation to leave his homeland, especially as a LG character?
--Could you come up with another goal outside of "Honor the Gray Father"? It's a good characteristic for a paladin, but I prefer goals that are more active (something that requires actions to complete, or further)

Thanks for the feedback - I will get the additional background in by tomorrow. I think I would prefer having him be a new arrival to Hearth. I will check again what you have posted on the setting, but what should he expect as an undine newcomer from a literal backwater?
And yes, Brinn is more or less a follower of River. And although he is a lukewarm devotee at best, at this point, he loves the fervently religious types as they are a wondrous source of material!

I don't have any questions for Kallik Sisa's background, but one thing I'm curious about: is Kallik Sisa a first/last name, or a first/middle name?
Miner Cotren
Deaths Adorable Apprentice:
I have not forgotten your questions! I have simply run out of steam for the day after combing over everyone's backgrounds. I am planning on having answers for you
One question that is easy to answer quickly: oread clothing is mostly leathers and hides closer to Volcano (warmer climes) and tending more toward furs and woven blankets in the cold north.
Ornamentation runs towards beads of whatever semi-precious stones are found in the area (varying from tribe to tribe, and by status within the tribe) Some of the more "savage" tribes (such as the minor Bullslayer tribe) make heavy use of bones, tusks, and teeth for ornamentation. Feathers as decoration is quite rare, as birds are strongly associated with slyphs and Fallen Sky.
Deaths Adorable Apprentice
The feat is Extra Rage Powers I was wanting to know if I could take it to grab a few Barbarian rage powers.
Kallik Sisa was meant to be a first and last name before I realized that the Oread did not use last names. Kallik is her first name while Sisa would be a middle name or a nickname.
I understand the lack of steam. Thank you for the clothing answer. I assumed it was something like that but wanted to check.
As to the sibling she most likely has heard that her parents lost a child but their mood when she asked about it has kept that from being discussed. As to if they die or are made into Fey I am cool either way. If the sibling is alive running into her/him could be great fun.

What does Fiordelise believe about her powers as a Skald? Does she think it comes from her (inner power, or skill), a gift from Volcano, or maybe even a heritage from her sylph ancestor?
How do classes work in the setting? Are classes strict roles requiring training - or more organic bundles of features you can explain as you like?
I doubt Fiordelise thinks of herself as a skald, she knows people often fight harder when she sings, and she knows she can do a few small spells, but she considers herself a warrior first.
If pressed she would probably call them her Volcano-granted gifts, but she'd say that in the same way a modern person would call their talents "god-given".
In other words, that's a long-winded way of saying she doesn't think on it much, she just works with what she has.

I like the idea of giving players the opportunity to explain their characters as they like.
Your explanation works for me. Some people might consider abilities like that to be a literal gift from the gods, but considering that most of the population of the world has innate minor magical powers, there are plenty of people that don't give such things a second thought.

To help make things easier for you to scan, I have formatted my submission and created an alias. Everything should be there. I made a few tweaks, such as changing the profession skill from librarian you barrister to more sufficiently align with his background.

I have no issue with the Extra Rage Power feat. The fact that you are able to learn rage powers pretty strongly indicates that you have "rage" for all intents and purposes.
Thanks for the confirmation about a lost sibling.

Appearance and crunch look good! I'll be posting oread superstitions and ceremonies tonight, as well as basic clothing styles for the other races. (of course, just like in the real world, cultures blend together in some areas, and there will always be people who dress against the norm)
As always, any other world questions anyone has are welcome.

Byron Cheme wrote:Any issues with Byron's background or stats?Sorry if you feel left out with no comments - I have absolutely no issues!
I just wanted to make sure he hadn't gotten lost in the flood of interest. Looks like you'll be able to get a very interesting cast of characters for this, no matter who you pick!
Brinn the Wit
Some additional background info...still considering the source material to come up with a few more thoughts
Also - I made up something called a Mer-Flute (15g) that can switch from playing normally underwater to in air by the adjustment of a simple slide mechanism.
* Brinn is slender, and slightly short, for an undine, however, his dark violet hair and bright violet eyes are somewhat of an anomaly, even among his brethren
* Brinn grew up in a small community on the outskirts of civilization - somewhat unusual in undine society as it acted as a bridge of sorts between the wealthy central merchants and the permanent river dwellers. The village is well-known for high-quality polished river-stones used in jewelry and the skins and furs of river animals, and Brinn was exposed to a a wide variety of traders and travellers.
* One such traveller was a sylph travelling scholar who was studying the daily routines of the various tribes and clans - it is from this Scholar that Brinn learned his working knowledge of the ifrit language (that choice was in part due to Brinn's desire to learn more about something he felt was far removed from his current situation...)
* He finds it almost irresistable to let slip by an opportunity to make comment on the foolish or ridiculous, although he is inherently good-natured and it is never his intent to hurt or insult another...unless they deserve it!
* Brinn never knew his father, and his mother left him at a very young age to be raised by his maternal Grandfather. He has not seen her since, but he is not currently driven to find his parents.
Step 2: Goals (one character, one player)
* Brinn's main goal at this stage of his life is to step out into the world to experience and learn knew things - and hey, if he can become famous along the way, all the better! Brinn has just arrived in Hearth to help accomplish this goal, though he has avoided the undine slums on his way in...
* I would like him to have the opportunity to deliver a masterpiece performance - how well he delivers remains to be seen...
Step 3: Secrets (one known, one unknown)
* Brinn knows a number of secrets, but virtually all are confined to the small cares and lives within his home community
* Brinn does not know his father's name or origin, or the ultimate fate of his mother
Step 4: People (at least two allies/friends and one adversary)
* Brinn's Grandfather - Brinn has never hear his true name, only heard him called various versions of Grandfather, Father, or Elder.
* Master Mirkoo - could be friend or adversary depending on how you look at it!
*
Step 5: Three Memories, Mannerisms, or Quirks

Looking at Ibinugilas' background:
--What was the nature of the wandering merchants/players he grew up with? Sylphs, mixed? Was his family part of it, or was he an orphan?
--After his curse, why did he decide to settle down in Hearth?
I have updated the name after some thinking on how I want the name to work....Ibinu***fury/furious / glass*** Gilas / Akoi***creator Thus Furious/Fury Creator is the name with gilas or glass defining and linking them together.
The wandering players/merchants traveled and traded in items and secrets/information. They were a mixed lot but the majority of them were Slyph. They all felt like they were black sheep so to speak to their families or racial groups for various reasons. His parents were alive for much of his life but about 20 years or so ago, the group was raided by an unknown group and his parents were killed. That left him with his grandpa as his only kin.
Secret he knows is that the city of Hearth's Captain of the Guard has an addiction to 2 rare and costly drugs. Ibinu also knows who sells these drugs in the city.
He came to Hearth because he was low on funds and figured that maybe he could find work with a glass maker or sell his secret/blackmail in order to refill his funds.
Death's apprentice and I also discussed that we easily could have traveled together after running into each other in the wilderness. He had a desire to go to Hearth and I as a traveler knew the way.
Let me know if there is anything else needed. I just got off work and have an errand to run but will check back in a couple of hours

Announcement!
So I'm guessing that the few people who didn't submit anything beyond a basic concept aren't going to be submitting anything tonight. Since I'm not the type to keep people waiting on things like this (reminds me too much of job interviews),
Without further ado...
All eight of you are in! I want to thank each of you for coming up with great characters that I think will mesh very well with the setting.
------------
Brinn
Fiordelise
Inam
Osric
Obedie
Kallik
Byron
Ibinu
------------
I think eight in one party would be a little unwieldy, so I'm going to run 2 independent tables, four characters each.
What I need from each of you:
--A quick confirmation you are still interested, especially if I haven't heard from you in several days.
--Submit any last tweaks to your background or sheet, and create an alias
--I have a pretty good idea about what the teams will be, but PM me tonight or tomorrow if you have any strong feelings about who you would like to play with.
In the mean time,
--I will be answering new and existing questions about the world
--We'll be working on previous relationships between characters once teams are settled

For those who already have an alias, or as the rest of you make an alias, here is what I'd like to see in your tagline:
(stolen shamelessly from GM Damo)
Note that "Elemental Ray" should be any "main abilities" you have like rounds of rage or rounds of bard song, etc.
For spells, I only really care about your 2 highest level spell slots (not that any of you have anything but 1st level spells right now)

Similar question for Inam: do you want her to be just arriving at Hearth at the open of the campaign?
Sorry for my delayed response. Saw your question at the tail end of my work day and things were getting hectic. If it's not too much trouble I would prefer Inam be just arriving to the capital.
And if you need clarification regarding her following "Volcano" I see her going with The Warrior aspect of Volcano.
