Looking around to ensure the crowd is gone, she turns back to 'Greg'.

Paying him the appropriate respect, although simply because she's staring intently at his arm she speaks, "Good sir. That arm looks bad and you haven't answered my question. I understand the desire to keep things private in a crowd as we had. Now that it's just us, I ask again. How did you get that cut? If you don't answer me, I may have to cut off the arm to save you."

Realizing how that sounds, the sylph adds "Don't get me wrong. I've no desire to harm you. But without further information to remedy the...problem. I'd have few alternative options. Your well-being is my concern."

Can I do a 'Heal check' while staring at the arm? If so...Heal: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (9) - 2 = 7

Negative Wisdom for the win! That arm definitely needs amputated. :-P

Mentally wincing at what he hopes is Inam's sense of humor, Brinn tries to enforce that idea. "Ha ha! That is quite funny Inam, the idea of cutting off an entire limb over a silly little cut! You are quite the jokester!" He then nods toward the couple with a look of concern. "Although she is correct good folks. You have been through a traumatic experience. Would you let us have a look at your arm? I promise no cutting off of things!" ...I hope...

Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Erp! we may decide both arms need to go!

A tired confusion haunts Greg's eyes. He shakes his head. "I don't even know if yer threatening me or offerin' help...you seemed decent folk..." He begins weeping.

"You don't want t' know. Please. Please just go back to yer lives and leave us be." Both Greg and his wife look down, not meeting anyone's gaze.

He doesn't fight if one of you decides to take 20 and get it right instead of using Heal in place of Intimidate :p Even with a successful check, you get the feeling this unnatural wound likely won't be helped by mundane means.

Sighing, Inam blurts out "Your arm injury is detecting as evil. So you can either come out with how you were hurt or we can make assumptions and do as we feel is right. It's hard to purify an injury without the appropriate knowledge."

She looks over to Etrah for approval. The chicken nods and with a cluck touches Inam with a wing. Inam continues."If you will not help us remedy this problem, I will take the arm to make sure it doesn't spread to the rest of your body!"

Brinn's eyes dart back and forth between his new friends and the couple...this arm cutting off business no longer seems just talk.... "Hey all! I would like to propose an alternative, since this talk of amputation has a ring of a finality to it. I suggest that I sit through the night with Greg and his wife, and tend to the wound. Maybe after we get more familiar, they will feel comfortable telling their tale. In the morning, if there is no change, I will try a healing charm my grandfather taught me. If still all fails, then we can look at...more extreme...measures."

Ibinu nods makes sense to me. No need to rush things when time will solve the issue. Just to make sure we dont have further "robber" issues, I'll sleep beneath the wagon for the night. Excuse me I will get my things.
Without another word Ibinu turns and walks over to get his gear. Returning He carefully sets up his "nightly nest" beneath the wagon.

If everyone agrees, then Kallik and Inam can narrate themselves back to bed (looks like Ibinu has already done so). Brinn, give me one more heal check; narrate what you are saying/doing throughout the night; and give any other checks you deem appropriate

The dim purple-red peaklight offers a scene a shade lighter than total darkness as the camp is resettled for a second attempt at sleep. Though the wind has died down, a deeper chill of fear and nightmares runs through the caravan, as visions of grinning skeletons scamper through sleeping minds.

Brinn finds himself an agreeable spot in the wagon and sits cross-legged a respectful distance from the couple. "So now, my good folk, let us make ourselves comfortable. Greg when you are ready I shall take a closer examination of that arm, and you perhaps can tell me a little more about how you were injured, if you recall. I think that is best for all, don't you? In the meantime, why not trade in an amusing tale or two. First me, then you?" Brinn launches into a series of humorous stories and allegories, but he does not really provide an opening for the couple to "trade". After each story he takes the opportunity to inch closer, and glance at Greg's arm. After several such tales, hoping Greg's guard has been lowered, he makes his request,"You two must be exhausted, how about a one last good look to see how things are progressing, and we can get some sleep?""

Upon hearing his companions suggestion, Inam gives a slight nod. "Fair enough. We can discuss this further after a nights sleep. I 'spect we're all a tad tired."

Looking to Brinn, "I'll be right outside, if needed."

Etrah and Inam retrieve her bedding and set up just outside the door to the wagon. As the elen falls to sleep a simple plea crosses her mind.

'Volcano...please guide me. Please...what is going on here??!'

Nodding to the Undine and turning to collect her things. Once she has her possessions Kallik heads back over to the wagon and curls back up. Drifting off to the stories that Undine is telling.

Brinn:
Between your loquacious manner and the couple's simple tiredness, you notice them--slowly but surely--begin to relax in your presence. Abelie even laughs at a few of your jokes. Greg simply shakes his head at any mention of the wound's origin.

After your tales are done, Greg nods his assent. Though the wound is not bleeding, your extended time with Greg allowed you to notice one detail: there is a small, slow trickle of weeping discharge coming from the cut.

This, in turn, gives you the idea to slowly, thoroughly clean it before bandaging it again. Though Greg seems to be in pain as you wash it, he falls into an untroubled sleep afterward. Abelie gently touches your arm. "You are kind, Brinn. Thanks for seeing to him, and...making sure that sylph with the chicken didn't kill him." A frown line appears on her brow as she mentions Inam. She curls up next to her husband, and falls asleep.

Inam:
Perhaps only in a dream, you hear Etrah make a sound almost like a dove. "Coooooooong....

The wind continues unabated through the night, stopping only at bright (dawn).

The date is Brightday, Mistrites the 26th. It is seventh candle.

In the morning, you all awake to the feeling of being watched. Outside of the dilapidated wagon, there stands a short undine. Though physically unimposing, the man's gaze burns with an intense scrutiny. His midnight blue skin, deeply lined and faceted with age, is nearly the same color as his black inquisitor robes. The dark red flames upon the robes proclaim him to be a high-ranking member of the Inquisition.

"Cittadino Gregori. A conversation must take place." The inquisitor's voice is flat and dead, totally lacking in passion and inflection.

...Ugh one of those, and it was looking to be such a nice morning too... Brinn has little doubt that any attempt to lighten the suddenly somber mood would most likely not help Greg and Abelie, and probably not himself either. Brinn had encountered some of the converted folk in the past, and found them to be annoyingly zealous in their devotion. ...and one of The Inquisition on top of that!... Brinn moves somewhat protectively toward Greg and his wife, placing a comforting hand on Greg's arm. Addressing the Inquisitor in his best serious tone, he attempts to stall what seems to be the inevitable, though for what reason, he is not sure. "Now my..um...Lord, these good people have had a trying night, being assaulted by thugs and all, and then being rescued by these brave warriors.". Brinn motions graciously toward Inam, Kallik, and Ibinu. "Can we not give them some little time to wake up, have a bite to eat, and prepare for travel before the caravan master begins his daily scolding? I am sure they will be glad to tell their story once we are back on the road."

Diplomacy check, if it does any good!

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

The inquisitor's expression does not change. "You misunderstand the situation. The remainder of this caravan will be leaving immediately. Cittadinos Gregori and Abelie will be staying." He looks for a long, hard moment at Brinn, Inam, Ibinu, and Kallik. "As will the four of you. You are not guards, or merchants. Your names and purpose will be given, and Volcano's word will stand judge over all."

Thinking a moment, she adds, "I too serve the mighty Volcano and welcome his judgment. I'm known as, errr was known? I'm Inam. This is Etrah" With a respectful curtsy she gestures to her feathered friend.

His stilted way of talking may be a little confusing...he was asking to give your names.

"I am not in the mood for jocularity. You have given me your name, but what is your purpose in coming to Hearth?"

Brinn is more than a little unnerved by this grim, humorless, undine. He takes his cue from Inam, and anxiously offers the requested information, the words spilling out in a fast torrent, "My Lord Sir High Inquisitor Sir I was given the name Ba Ran Ánh Sáng Ca Các Ngôi Sao Trên Sông by my mother but that is quite the mouthful for most folks so my grandfather called me Brinn for short when I was very young and I have answered to that name ever since and because I am not much for digging around in the mud for pearls and stones I travel to Hearth so to seek gainful employment in the hospitality craft or possibly the musical arts and be a productive and law-abiding citizen of the ever so great and wonderful City of Hearth!" Inside: Brinn mentally kicks himself for babbling like a fool, wishing he had shown a little more backbone.

Outside: Brinn stands at attention, maintaining a solemn face, with hands clasped behind his back.

Inside: Brinn mentally applauds and smiles in appreciation for Kallik and and Ibinu standing up against this little bully.

Outside: The barest hint of the mental smile reaches the corner of Brinn's mouth.

The hint of a frown tugs at the inquisitor's mouth as Kallik and Ibinu speak. "I am Inquisitor Số Không." (roughly "So Koo-ng-uh") He emphasizes and accents the second part of his name in a strange way, typical of the tonal Undine language.

"Cease this meaningless bluster. Cittadino Gregori alerted the temple that a valuable item in his possession was in jeopardy, and I will determine what occurred here."

So Khong's toad-gaze snaps to Greg, who has stepped out of the wagon. "Report."

Haltingly, without looking directly at the inquisitor, he says, "Your Mercy...the strongbox was nearly stolen by corrupt guards from the caravan. These four brave elens put a stop to that. When one of the thieves dropped the box, there was...well...a bright light." Greg takes a deep breath, and continues. "When it cleared, the box...was...empty." He flinches as he finishes.

So Khong says nothing. The silence stretches as he simply stares at each of you in turn.

After the inquisitor's exchange with Greg, and the fact that they seem to be acquainted, Brinn realizes the situation may not quite be what it had seemed....the sun begins to peek out from behind the clouds....

As his companions add their observations, Brinn begins nodding in agreement, emboldened by a new feeling of unity."These are all logical points your Mercifullness. Since we put ourselves in danger in order to aid your man here, and for the defense of the former contents of that box, which I might add was more dangerous than those thieves since they are now dust and bone, I think we are deserving of some explanation ourselves."

The inquisitor seems to consider your words. "It appears there are many questions to be answered. Do you agree to wait until the caravan leaves? Such discussion is not appropriate for the ears of selfish merchants and vulgar soldiers."

So Khong nods at Brinn's mention of safe passage.

Kallik's question catches the inquisitor's attention. His eyes widen as he walks within five feet of the oread. "A low opinion. And what would a fair opinion be of those who traipse through life caring only of money while true soldiers die on the fronts? What could possibly redeem the actions of drunken louts whose thoughts linger on the next whore to be bedded, or the next fatty piece of gristle to shove into their greasy mouths?"

"Elens die each and every day fighting the Dark. The fact that lazy cowards are not punished for remaining behind and not supporting the war effort is mercy enough - do not expect me to speak well of them."

By the end of his rant, So Khong is breathing rapidly; putting his left hand up to his temple, he calms himself with a visible effort.

In his original neutral tone of voice, he says, "There is no need for off-topic irrelevancies. I will explain Cittadino Gregori's arm, and the nature of the item momentarily. Behold, the caravan begins to depart." Squeaky wheels and tromping boots are the only sounds you hear as the rest of the caravan continues on to Hearth - no one so much as looks toward the inquisitor as they leave.

So Khong picks up the strongbox and examines it closely, muttering a spell to himself in rapid Benthic.

Finishing his incantation, he throws the strongbox aside with disgust. "Cling to your idealistic notions as you will."

He turns to Kallik. "The item was discovered east of here. Darkspawn attacked soon after it was unearthed, and took the lives of several inquisitors, priests, and soldiers. The item needed to arrive at Hearth promptly; there was no time to send more soldiers, so stealth was deemed the best protection available. Cittadino Gregori is known to be loyal to the temple, and his wagon was commandeered to the purpose. It is unknown how these corrupt guards knew about it."

Looking into the distance, he says, "As for the inquiry regarding his arm, the long-range summons requires a small blood sacrifice on the part of the messenger - in this case, Cittadino Gregori. I am told by the philosophers that this loss of health has the beneficial side-effect of discharging some of the natural evil that builds in the hearts of all men."

"Now with your questions answered, I would hear more of the light you all witnessed. What happened, and when?" He looks side-long at Inam. "And what would a young sylph, untrained by the temple, know of good and evil?"

Beaming, Inam proudly points to her chicken companion. "That's easy. Etrah is teaching me. I know I haven't trained in a temple, but Volcano has blessed me with a personal trainer to show me his ways."

With a definitive "Caww", the feathered creature nods.

"As for the light, it was a blinding white light. When I could see again the thieves were bone."

Inquisitor So Khong frowns at the chicken for a long moment, then looks back to Inam. "There appears to be more occurring here than a perfunctory observation would indicate. Would the four of you accompany me to the Great Temple in Hearth? The matter concerning the lost item is urgent, and I believe there are more answers to be uncovered."

Brinn motions toward Inam, "What the lady has said about the light is true, but also, I had a lingering vision of a circle that faded quickly. I would also say that from the commotion I heard, all in the caravan were likewise afflicted. The...event...seemed to have an impressive reach." ...why do I keep talking and talking, and so freely giving out what could be valuable knowledge. Perhaps Ibinu is right to demand for payment for his services, but now I must know more...

"Your Merciful Lord, I would accompany you as long as there are promises of fair treatment, and no misunderstandings of purpose." Brinn finishes with a friendly smile, as he awaits the reply.

"The great temple?! I would love to set foot in such a place. As for going with you...that should be agreeable."

Inam glances to Etrah for a sign. The small bird silently nods.

"Yes. I will go with you. I trust you will be fair regarding my companions? They did risk life, limb, and..."

With a side look at Kallik's physique, "...chipped flesh? to protect this poor soul."

Sorry for the delay. Carzy day. Now I am going to poke at the 'nice' Inquisitor again.

Meeting the Inquisitors gaze but keeping her silence, giving everyone time to speak and leaving herself for last. Raising a green eyebrow at Inam's comment but ignoring it for now Sylph's really are a strange group.

Smiling at the apparent oh so important Inquisitor"I like my idealistic notions and since I now have your permission I will continue clinging to them."

Shifting her stance she continues to speak, "I would be willing to go to your temple. Assuming I will be compensated for my time. Though like Brinn mentioned that vision was seen by everyone present.

Gesturing with her head to the leaving caravan, And there go a lot of elen who saw the same thing we did. Why do we have to go but they are free to continue with their quest for greasy food and whores?

The inquisitor meets all of your gazes, one at a time. He does not blink for what seems a long time. "All treatment will, of course, be fair. I see no black veins among you; you have nothing to fear from myself or anyone else in the temple."

At the mention of compensation from Kallik and Ibinu, he raises a silvery eyebrow. His forehead wrinkles deeply, emphasized by his stark, shaven head. "If you insist, a reasonable remuneration can be provided."

After Kallik's final question, he turns his back to the group. "I am only interested in first-hand accounts. The remaining members of the caravan, as you say, have their uses in providing wheat and ore to armies, despite their flawed self-interest. I will not delay them from their places in Volcano's plan." He walks to the side of the road, rather than toward Hearth. "I require a few minutes of prayer to Volcano, and then we shall be on our way. If you insist on conversation, restrain your volume."

And with that, So Khong's short form disappears into the nearby wheat field.

Nodding, I do insist. Gesturing with a hand, Enjoy your prayers. I will strive to keep it to a low rumble. Arrogant bastard. Her bright green eyes follow him as he walk with a glare.

After the few minutes have passed, the five-foot inquisitor reappears out of the six-foot wheat. "Come. We will make Hearth before dim (dusk) if we do not tarry."

This post is earlier than usual for me. If you want to have any discussion between yourselves or any questions for So Khong, post them, otherwise I'll probably mosey us along to Hearth later tonight during my normal posting time. If left to his own devices, So Khong will say nothing.

Inam watches the inquisitor walk away.

Why must he go so far? Is he ashamed?

Turning to her companions, she advises, "I shall be back in a moment as well."

Etrah and the sylph walk a few feet away, just out of ear shot of the others. Sitting on one knee, she faces the volcano and bows her head. A few minutes pass and she stands up, promptly returning to the group.

"We ready once he returns?"

Smiling at the others and clapping his hands together, Brinn replies"I have been ready! Is all the meditating and communing completed to everyone's satisfaction?" He dons his pack and picks up his spear to use as a walking stick, pointy end down, oblivious to the likely consequence of a dull or broken blade.

Grumbling to herself and moving to collect her things. Once she is sure that she has everything secured in her bag it is thrown over her shoulder.

Raising an eyebrow at Brinn's incorrect use of his weapons. Walking over and grabbing his spear to stop him. Once she is sure he has the undine's attention she softly says, You are doing it wrong. Pointing to the spear tip, Pointy end goes into flesh not the ground.

Brinn looks down at the spear point in the dirt, then up at Kallik with a wink and a smile. Twirling the spear with a flourish he plants the butt on the ground. "You are correct m'lady! but for me, it is best said flesh belongs to an unfortunate fish!"
