Volcano's Land - A New Beginning

Game Master Miner Cotren

Darkness surrounds the land where the peoples of Volcano, River, and Forest live under a Fallen Sky.

Glancing towards Egret and spotting Kallik's response she raises an eye. "Oh? Would that be something we should look into this day?" she asks. 'I should remember to ask for the specifics of that situation when the time is right...'

Looking around the room as she stifles a yawn, the sylph considers 'Hmm...likely still in bed. Just where I should be...' Taking a breath at the door, she enters silently. Sitting next to her rocky friend, she helps Etrah down to the table.

The fowl stands in front of Inam's plate, facing her and the pair bow their heads silently. After a few moments, the two simultaneously sit upright, without making a noise.

Taking a piece of the meat for Etrah, Inam begins to slowly gnaw on her bread. Shaking her head to clear the thoughts of her fallen friend, she begins to consider her life since arriving in the city.

'Well, it's not home. That's for sure. There's so much more order here, save the blasted darkspawn. We'll handle them or they'll handle us. 'Least it'll be Volcano's will. Even with the order and clarity one finds in this place, it does have some issues. Thieve's...though reformable....and stealing children?! Yet, it's still so much more peaceful than home. None of the hypocrisy.'

Looking over the Egret and Kallik, she smiles. 'Though it would be nice to see my parents again. Maybe someday I'll be able to help them see the error of following a dead god. I just...I'm not ready yet. Etrah has much to teach me yet!'

Finishing her bread ahead of the others, she pulls out her worn down pamphlet and begins to read. Patiently waiting for the others to complete their meal.

Egret's pale face is hidden by her curls as she plays with her food. She seems to be engaged in a war between pieces of bread and strips of meat, where casualties meet their end inside of her mouth. She does this silently. The biscuits look very large in her small, fine-boned hands.

You all notice that your small group is garnering a fair amount of attention. Some of the pot-bellied priests, red-robed and red-skinned, point towards you and return to their meals.

The same undine inquisitor that Inam saw near the top of the Temple--goggle-eyed glasses and a short silvery goatee--is openly staring at all of you, a slight smirk on his face. He is writing in a small black book without looking down.

Scene can move to outside the refectory if you wish; no one directly confronts you

After your meal, when you are outside the refectory, Eo says, "So, uh, do you guys want to see the Temple library? The public one, that is?"

Looking over towards Egret, Inam smiles "Yeah, I suppose that wouldn't hurt. My dear Eo, have you any idea why we seemed to be such a spectacle this morning in there?"

"Well, you guys did save two guards and a prisoner from darkspawn. Whether Inquisitor So Khong likes it or not, I think word is starting to get out." He looks up, reciting from memory. "As the Rove Voce says, "Easier for an elen to swallow lava than keep a secret."

Nodding to Kallik, she turns and begins following Eo towards the library.

"Oh, any chance you recognized that inquisitor with the goatee? The one that seemed quite taken by my friends stony demeanor? Who is that?"

Confusion rolls across Kallik's face and she twists around to find who Inam is talking about.

Kallik, you catch a glimpse of a light-blue inquisitor, perhaps the same age as So Khong. He is still brazenly observing at all of you, and does not look away as you notice him. His sylph-crystal glasses, which magnify his eyes enormously, make his gaze impersonal, almost clinical.

Eo looks away from Inam. He mumbles, "Oh, uh, let's talk about that later, okay?"

If i didn't know better, Eo I'd have tp say the eyeball monster man over there is intimidating you. Ibinu states with a small dry chuckle.

"Ok? If you insist Eo. Just seems to be more interested in us than one should..." Her voice trailing off as she considers the possible reasons for his interest.

'Perhaps, it's the beauty of her chiseled stone physique...or he's releasing the darkspawn? or....it's So Khong in disguise spying on us?!'

Shaking her head violently, she announces "Eh...too early to tell for sure."

"BaWak!" exclaims Etrah, pecking her in the neck.

"Ouch! Mac soith! Quit that!" yelps the sylph. Glancing to Egret she mumbles "Uh...sorry."

It is seventh candle.

Egret shrugs at Inam's apology. "I've heard meaner things than that."

Eo leads you outside. The somnolent purples of night are slowly brightening into a rosy red peaklight, giving bloodthirsty Volcano an almost jovial aspect. The cheerful light warms the day, banishing the bitterest cold of yesterday. More priests, mediators, and civilians are starting to ascend the stairs of the Temple on early-morning errands.

From the second-tier refectory, Eo takes you up the main staircase, carved steps slightly slippery in the lingering cold, to the fourth tier, which you have not had occasion to visit yet. You see several more grotesque efreet statues perched above the grand double-doors. They all have gaping, empty sockets where their eyes should be. Several are clutching stone tomes to their chests and screaming to Fallen Sky.

Oblivious to the statues, Eo stops at the doors and asks, "What are you guys interested in? We go left for religious writings, even the other gods, and right for everything else."

"What happened to the eyes?"

'Fallen Sky, what a bunch of bull. Killing a god? Must not have been That powerful'. "Psh" Scoffs the elen.

Inside the Library

"I'll be heading to the left I suppose. I bet Egret would prefer to head the the right. I could likely spend days in here, so when you're read let me know."

Turning she heads to the right. Pausing a moment, the sylph holds her hands before her, tracing an 'L' on her fingers. Turning a round, she flashes a sheepish grin and the pair disappear down one of the religious aisles.

Answering Inam's question, Eo says, "Oh, uh, I think that that represents the efreets being stripped of the knowledge of Volcano. You know, they can't read the books without eyes." He coughs awkwardly.

"Mind if I come along, Inam?" Glancing back at the rest of you, he says, "You guys can ask one of the librarians for help if you need to. They have brown robes."

With a nod, she calls back "Of course Eo. Anything specific you're looking for?"

Once in the section, the sylph starts scanning the titles relating to 'The Warrior' specifically.

The brown-robed sylph points Ibinu toward the reference books, which include a dizzying array of knowledge ranging from geography to geometry. After a bit of searching you find two large books. The first is a dry technical treatise written by a sylph scholar that covers the history and fine details of several prominent techniques, and the evolution of those techniques. The second is lyrical and badly-organized, but the ifrit author has an obvious love of glass-craft that is missing from the first book. It contains illustrations of stained glass windows and finely-sculpted statuettes - birds, pogonas, bulls, and fish.

Egret tugs on the librarian's robe after he is done helping Ibinu, and sweetly demands poetry. Patiently, the librarian shows Kallik and Egret to long, long rows of poetry, music, and fiction. The books are considerably less organized here - the Temple seems to place a lesser value on these works. Egret selects a lime-green tome entitled Lands of Beauty and Horror, and shows it to Kallik eagerly. "I bet there are beauty-ful words in here! You get one too!"

Eo says, "Oh, I'll just tag along and see what catches my eye." Inam quickly finds a slim, red book with the gilded words The Philosophy of the Warrior on the front. Eo takes a book called The Three Aspects of Volcano from nearby.

Ibinu finds a spot to sit and begins to read in depth the second book. This one I could learn from. I am enthralled that he loves his craft so much it is hard to put that in words others can feel.

Inam, as you look around for a table to sit and read, you nearly bump into Bian as she comes around a corner.

After recovering the initial blinking surprise of the near-collision, Bian becomes reserved, and distant. "Oh. Hello." She attempts to smile, and fails. "What brings you to the library this day?" She clutches a small purple book in the crook of her right arm, obscuring its title.

"Huh? Oh. That little gal our friends saved was interested in checking out the library. Figured I'd get some research done. Whatcha reading there?" she responds.

'She's been acting off...are all undines this way? All friendly and helpful in the beginning....then suddenly distant for no reason?'

You clearly see Bian considering whether to answer your question or not. With a sigh, she says, "It is a collection of proverbs and meditations, concerning the following of Volcano's will...when it is particularly difficult."

She nods at Eo. "Nice to see you again Eo."

Eo, seemingly oblivious to any tension, enthusiastically responds, "You too!"

Raising an eye, Inam inquires "Are you finding things...difficult in such regards? If you need help, I'm sure Etrah would be happy to council you as he does me. I think I could survive a few moments from time to time without him upon my shoulder."

'She's been school in such things. She has magic from Volcano...how could she doubt him? His devotion has been earned! ME? I just had a chicken walk out of a fire...why did he chose me?' considers Inam in awe of the blue elen's revelation.

With a face of stone to rival Kallik's, Bian looks toward Etrah. The chicken blinks. Bian blinks twice. A moment passes. "I know that your offer is kindly meant." Looking up and taking another deep breath, she says, "If we are to be a team, there can be no falsehoods between us. My present difficulty is being stripped of my old duties, my old fellowships, to be thrust toward three strangers."

"Buck-aw!" Etrah adds.

A tight smile. "Yes. Three strangers, and a strange chicken. Perhaps I will learn to communicate with him yet." Truth spilled upon the floor, irretrievable, Bian seems unsure of whether to stay or go.

"Hmm...I can understand how being forced out of your routine to do something you're not prepared for could cause you issues." she replies softly.

Glancing to the feathered friend on her shoulder, she giggles. "Could be worse. You could have to tell your family 'A chicken told me to'." Inam adds with a wink. "If there's anything I can do, you just give us a holler. Perhaps, you would be interested in sharing some of that fancy schooling of yours with me."

With a slight curtsy, she turns and finds a table to study her new found pamphlet.

Raising an eyebrow at Egret's choice of book. That certainly seems like it would be rather dark Though everything here seems to be. For a temple of fire this place is so dark and somber. A smile easily makes its way on to Kallik's lips, "I must find one of my own? Why can I not read with you Egret."

Reading through a couple pages, she ponders 'I would think they'd have more information on 'The Warrior'...more specifics that is...'

Dear Eo, how's your volume treating you? A good read?" she inquires, without looking up.

Egret giggles delightedly. "What a good idea! Let's go sit next to...what's the tall, kind-of-scary guy's name again?"

The book consists of pairs of poems, the first of which contemplates the beauty of a given subject, such as butterflies; the second poem of each pair examines the flip-side, like the inevitability of death. The author manages to do this in such a way that is not overly depressing, but it is not particularly uplifting, either. Egret focuses solely and the words, rhymes, and imagery, mostly ignoring the larger message.

Inam, most of The Philosophy of the Warrior is concerned with martial affairs: how to properly combine prayer and training; how to comport yourself on the battlefield; the necessity of absolute loyalty to fellow soldiers and commanders. There is very little about day-to-day life.

Eo says, "Oh, it's okay. Which aspect to pray to about certain things, stuff like that."

Ibinu, you notice that the author of the second book mentions the location of a shop in Hearth. You are unsure when this book was written, but it is entirely possible this glass-crafter still practices in Hearth.

"Ibinu? You want to sit next to him?" When Egret nods Kallik looks around and leads Egret to the section of the library Ibinu is in. Finding somewhere both she and Egret can sit and then quietly reading over the child's shoulder.

Egret nods, and quietly skips over to the table when she spots Ibinu. She sits three seats away from him, and shyly glances over at him when she believes he is not looking.

The last poem in the book is, strangely, written in Sylph. Egret reads Sylph as fluently as she does Common, reading simple words easily and struggling with longer ones now and then. "This doesn't sound as good when it's not in Sylph, but I want you to hear it, Sissy."

"

"

Egret scrunches up her face. "Geal? I've never seen that word before." She whispers to Kallik in a conspiratorial voice, "Can you ask Ibinu what geal means?"

Ibinu, if you decide to answer:
Roughly "bright", "white", or "shining". Usually used as the Sylph word for bright which in turn is Volcano's equivalant of dawn

Inam, your book ends with a warning:

"
Above all things, be vigilant of cruelty.

With practice and discipline, any elen can learn to wield a sword.

Violence births and nurtures yet more violence, unless care is taken.

Take care to be a warrior, and not a killer.

Turning to Etrah, she asks "It's just talking about people...and maybe animals, right? Darkspawn are different?"

'Or maybe its saying all things are reachable...even vile darkspawn?' considers the sylph as she becomes lost in her own internal debate.

Forcing the frown to stay off her face and not show any sign of the unexplained sinking in her stomach. Looking over at Egret, "Well there is your answer. On to the next poem?" Taking a moment to remember the page and book that Egret selected. Seems like something that would make So Khong angry.

Egret flips through the last two pages of the book. "They're blank. That's so weird." She emphasizes the last word, enjoying the sound of it. She pulls out a piece of parchment from a small satchel at her side. "I just wanna write that last one down, and then we can go."

Her writing is markedly less proficient than the drawing skill she displayed earlier. The letters are all recognizable, but they are large and wiggling, almost alive. The young sylph does not seem overly concerned with putting the letters directly next to one another. She spells the Sylph word for Volcano, Bolcán, correctly, and it looks something like this:

B Lc a

It is ninth candle.

Feel free to stay in the library, but also feel free to go elsewhere. Explore the town, the Temple, bug So Khong about training and other resources, ask around about any unanswered questions that are still bothering you, etc

Looking up from her book, Inam asks, "Think we could tour the lesser neighborhood we saw from atop the temple? I'd also like to discuss who that stranger was when we are able, Eo."

Glancing back to her book, "Any chance I could take this with me as well? I'd like to study it further."

Eo puts his book back exactly where he found it, moving other tomes aside with exaggerated care. His shoulders are very tense as he does this.

Walking to find the others, Eo responds, "The Dims? Uh, sure. Anything in particular you want to see?"

He smiles at your second question. "Sure, I'll vouch for you if anyone gives you trouble about it." He winks at you.

Inam and Eo meet up with Ibinu, Kallik, and Egret

Egret is just finishing her unique transcription of the poem as Eo and Inam approach. She looks up, her golden eyes flickering with nearby lantern-light. "Did you find beauty-ful words too? I learned about butterflies, dying, and geal, but I don't know what that is for sure."

Ibinu puts his book down and sits quietly pondering what he has read and considering how to apply it to his trade when he gets a moment. Is there somewhere that produces glass? he queries Eo and Egret

Eo nods. "Sure, Vecc can show you where. Depending on what kind of place you're looking for, it'll either be in the Shops or the Marketplace. I'm going to take Inam to the Dims..." he looks confused for a moment, and looks over at Inam, "Why did you want to go again?"

"Huh? Oh, why for the same reason I insisted on seeing your dungeons. One is best able to determine proper treatment...or rather truth, when one experiences how we treat our worst."

Tugging out her ragged pamphlet, she flips though a few pages. "It's in here somewhere..." mumbles the sylph. As she turns the pages of the worn document, you can see scrawled notes in the corners and certain passages circled, while others are underlined. "Hmmm...not seeing it."

"Anyway, how are we to help the downtrodden, if we don't fully understand their plight?"

Nodding along with Inam, "That is true." Damn I have a child, though I should be able to keep her safe.

Looking down at Egret, "Would you like to show me around your city?"

With a slight crease on her brow, Egret takes on a slightly lecturing tone. "The city does not belong to me, Sissy. But I will be most happy to take my favorite big sister on a tour."

Nodding her understanding, "My apologies Egret and thank you."
