If he would alter the encounter, nothing would matter. If he does not alter the encounter, other crocs would be there either way. Why would I use a roll to say that something you're going to try to kill will die before the end of combat? I wanted to see how powerful the move really was. If we can't protect him, Mooshy can't keep Emanuel alive either. Plus Retzack can totally blame Sees for her creepy voodoo.

If you do have an objection though, I can change it to a safer option: tanard lives, croc dies.

Or we could plan as a group with tactics and stuff.

That may or may not be a contributing motivation for making wild, disruptive choices.

Unholy Abomination

Shieldbearer is still with Tanard I imagine.

Your logic is too deep for me. I've never seen the appeal for being disruptive, but I'm also not that bright. =)

Since you've offered, yes, I'd ask for a safer option.

It seems that the move might be best for desperate-yet-clear-cut situations. i.e. Thunk, who only has 1 hp left, is about to hit the evil Sir Nastyman, and rolls an 8 for H&S, and the damage Thunk will take will surely slay him. Then you layeth the smacketh of Live on Thunk. Boom. Winning. The damage may still happen, but either way Thunk doesn't worry about making his Last Breath.
Or something. =)

Hey, I said I wasn't that bright. ^_^

Basically it'd be for calling that a Hireling won't die and an enemy will and the GM must then try to make sure those calls come true before the end of the encounter. The way Sees is doing it seems like fighting against your own move. Which seems both counterintuitive and a bit of a waste of a level. It builds character and works with how she put it I the fiction but from a metagaming perspective it's like hopping into Monopoly prison because that's just what you wanted to do.

Male Tiefling Channeler (Shadow/Ice) | Lvl 6 | XP 5 | HP 14/28 | CON +3 STR +2 DEX -1 INT +2 WIS +0 CHA +0 |

Oh and to clarify, I totally dig it for the character and from within the story, it's really cool to have someone who can tell how much life others have left in them. It's just that the powergamer in me is protesting and frankly crying a little bit.

F Kobold Bard Lv 7.03 | HP:19/22 | Dmg:d6 AC:1 | CHA:+2 WIS:+2 CON:+2 DEX:+1 INT:0 STR:-1

Actually, sitting in prison is a pretty good move later in the game. You aren't landing on other people's properties. XP

This death's eyes move has a few hard limits we should all understand. The move triggers when Sees enters battle, named characters must be NPCs, and the characters named will live or die as long as the DM deems it possible. Finally, she'll see her own death on any 6-, but can survive, which means whatever she's seeing is unreliable in some way.

The limit which needs to be tested before we try to rely on the move is "what is considered possible?" Will Mooshy give npcs heart attacks and brain aneurysms to ensure a character's death? Can a survivor take obviously too much damage and live? Can an enemy's survival be used as a weapon?

I can wait to make those tests, though.

Male Tiefling Channeler (Shadow/Ice) | Lvl 6 | XP 5 | HP 14/28 | CON +3 STR +2 DEX -1 INT +2 WIS +0 CHA +0 |

I'm totally not there but may I suggest severing the leg? Retzack has bonded with the fellow and can surely help put a new, better leg in place of the torn one. It could be the only way to avoid death since the gators seem to be leaving.

In the meantime I'm glad we won't have to worry about guards for just a short while.

@Sees-Death. Alright, sorry. Looks like I was wrong. ^_^

I was perfectly ready to kill Eats-Bugs, but he only got...disarmed...because Sees and Retzack both rolled over 10, Retzack rolled over 12, and both did max damage. You rekt that crocogator so I mollified the death that Sees saw, somewhat.

I'll gladly roll something to attack some humans on the ground like Hegh suggested.

Did I miss a holiday or something?

With bardic lore, I just make stuff up, and it's up to everyone else to make it relevant. This will make two items referencing Mellisand. She's most definitely a chaotic caster type. I got the name (Melisande Shahrizai) from a book series called Kuschiel's Dart, where she's effectively the queen of BDSM and clandestine usurpation.

She's probably dead from her visit with Gorlaug.

Gentlemen, with changed work duties I've found that I've over-extended myself in my eagerness to GM and play PbP dungeon world. Unfortunately, the campaign that I'm running is suffering for it. I need to step back from a game and this campaign has a healthy number of players and is in no danger of closing down from lack of participation. I think this is the best game to step away from.

Moosh, I've thoroughly enjoyed your GMing here and am looking forward to continuing on in your Skaven campaign.

Best of luck guys. Perhaps Hegh will return if things settle down a bit for me.

Hope that happens soon, sir.

Just don't be upset if you're missing some of your loot. Just the pills really, if anything. I'm sure there's other neglected items scattered about.

How are we resolving the ring's interaction with the through death's eyes failure. (On a 6- you see your own death and consequently take -1 ongoing throughout the battle.)

If it's something spectacular, I can make sure she hands off the ring so it never happens again.

Are talking about the ring with the Stone of Irrationality?

Because if we are, I could, I suppose, take it off your hands.

If he gets the chance, he'll take it WITH your hands too.

And then attempt to sell you on the merits of crocogator hands while denying any taking of your previous set.

There's always some way to toe the line.

May I introduce to you the dramatic PBP DM's best friend: The Zalgo Text Generator

It adds accent characters to normal text (sometimes recursively) and can give text a number of cool looking effects.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've been doing some thinking and I'm going to propose a change in how we do posting in this campaign. I'm trying to make it easier for me to keep track of, because very often I find myself overlooking rolls or sometimes even a player's whole post due to being overwhelmed.

I love how creative this group is, and your posts are always a treat for me to read. However, as a DM, I'm starting to run into issues where there's a tremendous amount of complexity for me to respond to - especially when I have to come up with a result for a 7-9 roll.

So I'm instituting a new post rule. I'm allowing only one post per player that contains rolls between DM action posts, and in that action post with rolls, you can only make one roll that involves attacking, spellcasting, or acting in some way, and one "mental" roll - such as Discern Realities or Spout Lore. You may make an unlimited number of "talking" or RP related posts. Talking, as we all know, is a free action.

Defy Danger rolls don't count toward this limit, as they're often incidental to what you're actually trying to do. For example, if you have to defy danger in order to get close enough to attack, you can defy danger + hack and slash.

You just can't cast a spell + hack and slash + cast a spell etc.

This could have a small effect of "slowing down the action," and I'm very aware of that danger. Slowing down the action to the point where the campaign gets boring is NOT what I'm trying to do. However, I have to acknowledge that it gets very intimidating for me as DM to look through all these multiple-paragraphs long posts to pick out what I have to include in my DM action post. Y'all are just too prolific!

I'm open to discussing this new ruling to make it as fun as possible for everyone involved. I'm just trying to simplify the process so it's easier for me as DM to respond to actions more consistently.

Male Kobold Thief | Lvl 4 | XP 4 | HP: 16/19 | Armour 1 | Damage 1d8 | STR 0 | DEX 2 | CON 1 | INT 1 | WIS 2 | CHA 0

Can I get a bit of clarification on just what "acting in some way" means? It seems like a little TOO loose of a wording for me.

I just use "acting in some way" as a catch-all for anything that doesn't fall under a mental roll. If it's a physical action on your character's part that requires a roll, but it's not defy danger, there's a limit of one per post.

So to put it into groupings sorted by Basic Moves:

Defying danger rolls : No limit on number, it just depends on circumstances and the danger you're trying to avoid

Spout Lore, Discern Realities: No limit, depends on what you're trying to figure out

Hack and Slash/Volley/Cast a Spell rolls: 1 per DM action

The other benefit of this is that I should be able to respond much more rapidly to simpler, more efficient posts, so I can try to post multiple times a day to keep up with everyone. But I want to hear what everyone has to say on the subject.
