Moving quickly to counter the theft Vanja, Beck, Sheelah, and Helgash move after the invisible crow. although they think they know exactly where the crow is it is hard to tell for sure judging only by the position of the mask. Beck and Sheelah both miss the crow completely with Sheelah attacking the wrong area even. Venja has a bit more luck as her flailing hair hits something solid casuing a few feathers to appear but not solidly enough to bring forth any blood. Helgash's attack also brings a burst of tail feathers but no blood with the passing of his longsword. Did not get past natural armor but did target the square and area successfully.

Jetro tries to a different approach as he pulls a bow from his back and takes a shot with an arrow. The arrow flies true to where the feathers came from Vanja's attack but his aim is too far to the right as the arrow hits off of the wall of the cave.

The mask continues out the cave entrance and is now 10ft in the air. The mask bounces in the air in time to the flapping of wings as the crow begins to gain altitude but is still within melee range of those on the ground.

Even with the crow going right past him Variel does not see the mask. The actions of his allies though tell him the crow has escaped so he moves out of the way so the others can get a clear line of sight to the crow. Follow him if you can. I can't find it. I will stay here and guard Nadya, the dogs, and the supplies till you get back. Good luck.

Beck is able to pinpoint which square the crow is flying in and makes a charge with Sheelah right beside him. Although Sheelah doesn't know she to attack she keeps pace in case the threat materializes.

Beck charge with scimitar 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 miss at 1d100 ⇒ 6

Helgash continues to use his detect evil to good use to move up and attack the crow as well. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 miss at 1d100 ⇒ 58

Xanxan crit confirm with rapier 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 for 1d4 ⇒ 1

In a flurry of misses that leaves the crow buffeted by the wind the crow manages to escape the wrath of everyone but Xanxan. The spry gnome finds a weak spot and inserts his rapier under the wing. He crow caws in agony as blood starts to ooze from the wound.

Wether or not the attack from Xanxan had anything to do with it or nota, the crow suddenly is perfectly visible as it retreats higher into the air flying at full speed now towards the forest. 15 in the air and now 120ft away as it withdrew and double move flying.

Good guys up and crow still visible. After this round will need survival checks to follow it through the forest to its next.

Venja grabs her light crossbow and loads it. Lets out a brief cry of despair as she realizes how far it is and that it will be out of range by the time she can fire.

She does her best to stay out of the way of those who can do something to stop the creature.

Beck points and commands Sheelah to Track the bird as he looses his sling with his tail and loads up a Cold Iron Bullet

Jetro manages to get a last parting shot that hits the bird squarely in the back between the wings. It flutters for a moment from the impact but then recovers enough to continue its flight towards its nest. Beck tries to get in on the action as well using his prehensile tail the best of its ability to draw load and fire his bullet. The quickness of the action left the stone improperly seated and the sling throws the stone wide of its mark. Calling to Sheelah Beck and her mark the direction the crow is flying and are able to discern the path it is taking. Although it might take 10 minutes they are positive that they can find the nest and thus the crow.

Helgash meanwhile takes out and loads his sling for when they do see the crow he will be ready.

Xanxan sighs at the talk of the crow being natural, "Unless crows are getting admission into wizard academies, no, I don't think it's natural. And it tried to zap my brain... I think sticking a dagger in ITS brain is only a fair trade." He moves on in to find the crow.

After 10 minutes of following the trackless Beck, the group sans Variel arrives at a large tree towering 50ft in height. Looking up you see a large nest 30ft up in the tree. No sign of the crow though can be seen. Looking at the tree you can see that the winter conditions has created a layer of ice coating the bark making the ascent a bit more dangerous than normal.

Venja has the 'frostfoot hex':

Frostfoot (Su) This ability works like the spider climb spell, but the surfaces the witch climbs must be icy. The witch can move across icy surfaces without penalty and does not need to make Acrobatics checks to run or charge on ice. She can move across regular snow without penalty, and heavy snow only costs her 2 squares of movement instead of 4.

spider climb: The subject can climb and travel on vertical surfaces or even traverse ceilings as well as a spider does. The affected creature must have its hands free to climb in this manner. The subject gains a climb speed of 20 feet and a +8 racial bonus on Climb skill checks; furthermore, it need not make Climb checks to traverse a vertical or horizontal surface (even upside down). A spider climbing creature retains its Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) while climbing, and opponents get no special bonus to their attacks against it. It cannot, however, use the run action while climbing.

Here's 3 climb checks just in case you need them:

She proceeds to shimmy up the tree, using her spider climb like ability on ice to adhere to the usually slippery substance. When she arrives at the nest, she peers in, hoping, but not really expecting to find, the crow or the mask. Whether the mask is there or not, she casts detect magic on the nest to see what the bird might have collected other than the mask.

Helgash reluctantly follows thr group plodding through the snow, worried that simply moving out into the cold may be dangerous, but agreeing that this is something that then need to carry out fully.

As they arrive at the base of the tree, he nods at Venja, sticking the polearm in the snow, and keeping his sling at the ready.

Before she begins her ascent, he conjures a divine protection around Venja - "We will be watching" - he adds.

Casting Protection From Evil on Venja - next will again use Detect Evil, and ready an action to attack the crow if he notices it.

Hmm, haven't responded till now as I was trying to figure out how this frostfoot hex was going to ruin my plans.

Venja with the aid of Helgash's spell you start to climb up the tree with ease. The ice clining to your fingers gives you all the purchase necessary you need. One you are about 20ft up you feel an alien presence in your mind threatening to overwhelm you. If your mind you see a thousand crows bearing down upon you attacking from all directions at once. Need a will save DC 16 to avoid evil eye: -2 to AC for 6 rounds as you are distracted by the mental assault.

Beck Whips a Sling Bullet at the crow, then loads up another round as a move action, while Sheelah circles and waits for a chance to attack.

K(nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 to ID the creature


Venja you manage to throw off the long duration of the evil eye hex but you still reel from the assault for this round. Inside the nest you see a glowing small stone, the mask, 2 bottles but only 1 has fluid in it, 2 tokens and 4 rocks.

Beck is the only one able to pinpoint the location of the crow and lands a sling stone with almost perfect accuracy. the stone hist the crow squarely causing a loud caw to erupt as feathers and blood can be seen dripping from the wound. The crow is nothing natural that you can determine Beck. Those that see it can make a knowledge arcanea check though.

Everyone can make another perception check at +2 to try and spot the witchcrow again. Remember also that even if I ask for a perception check you can make additional ones as move actions. Might help Jetro and Xanxan as I forgot it myself for Variel while in the cave.

can venja just grab the whole nest and descend with it, or is it too big or too well attached to the branches? If she can, she'll just grab the nest... if not, she'll start removing things from the nest and stashing them in pockets and pouches.

Helgash is unable to pinpoint the creature's location, and fumes in frustration, moving around the tree, trying to get a better look - "I cannot locate the little creep" - he roars, straining his eyes.

Helgash you are able with detect evil up to know about where the crow is hiding. You still do not see it though among the foliage of the trees.

Venja, you have the choice of either attempting a strength check to dislodge the nest and dump everything onto the ground below or you can gather items as they are listed by groups. (The 4 rocks count as 1 group, the 2 tokens as another group etc.) You also identify the bird as a Greater Witchcrow, a magical beast that has an affinity to magical items. They are so named as they posses witch like abilities with their hexes with can vary among individuals. Gathered together in a group they can create a teleportation circle effect for a limited period of time.

Seeing that the hexes are not working the witchcrow takes more aggressive action and dives at Venja claws bared attempting to dislodge her from the tree before swooping away again just out of reach of her (Flyby Attack) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 vs cmd bulrush. Not having success, it positions itself for another dive attack next time. The attack has revealed itself to everyone below it though.

Venja spends her time collecting items, starting with the mask, then the small glowing stone. that's assuming she can use her two actions to collect two items and put them away As a swift action, she extends her hair, so if she gets knocked off the branch, she can attempt to grab something with the hair an prevent herself from falling to the ground.


Jetro takes aim at the now visible and identified witchcrow but his luck is not with him on this shot as the arrow flies wide of its mark.

Venja manages to gather the mask and the glowing stone as she keeps her footing on the branch. Working her hair again she elongates it hoping that it will save her should she get pushed off the branch.

"There you are" - Helgash grumbles as the crow reveals himself, immediately twirling the sling, and launching a stone at it.

Beck and Helgash growl in frustration as now that he crow has finally revealed itself they are unable to land a stone on the crow. Sheelah paces around the base of the tree occasionally clawing at the bark in anticipation.

Xanxan has a bit more luck in tracking the bird and lands a stone precariously close to ta wing causing it to divert its attention for a briefest moment hoping someone else can take advantage of the lack of concentration.

Bottom of Round 2

The Witchcrow continues its aerial acrobatics as it tries to dislodge Venja from the tree. Venja gets a chance to hit with her hair though as it moves in for the maneuver. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 vs CMD. This time the bird successfully lands a solid hit on Venja knocking her from her perch. Her elongated hair lashes out trying to catch a tree branch before falling 40ft down to the ground suffering 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 1) = 9 falling damage. reflex DC 15 to catch yourself from falling and then need a dc 15 str check on your turn to pull yourself up. with your hair you gain a +2 bonus on the reflex save and can use the str of the hair.

The crow caws wildly at you as it realizes you have the mask in hand.

Venja's action is to put away the mask and the glowing stone into her pouch... and get ready for another onslaught from the crow if her friends don't bring it down. This time, several locks of her hair are already tightly wound around branches, hopefully making it hard to dislodge her.

As the witchcrow dives in the hair lashes out striking the crow with a hard hit but the maneuver works to Force her off the branch. Venja manages to keep herself from falling to the ground by catching the branch with her hair. She is able to pull herself up and start placing the items in her pack. From below Jetro takes careful aim at the crow, his arrow piercing th crow und the outstretched wing. The shot is true and drops the crow to the ground where the fall kills it outright.

Venja takes her time, re-casting detect magic to make sure she doesn't miss anything and takes all the items in the nest, magical or not, the total list of items being: a glowing small stone, the mask, 2 bottles but only 1 has fluid in it, 2 tokens and 4 rocks.

When she's done stashing these items in pouches and pockets, she walks back down the tree trunk, keeper her hair out, grabbing subsequent branches cautiously on the way down, just in case the bird has a mate who tries to dislodge her.

Reaching the bottom (hopefully) she shows her finds to the others and recasts detect magic, looking at the items with an eye to identifying them.
