Scoria the Stalwart |
Know Religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Well, I would have thought that it would be common knowledge that undead can make other undead, though the specifics between different types is what is needed for a knowledge roll. Also forgot she had religion trained, whoops!
DM-Valkur |
I thinking burning the dead would be fairly common way to stop the dead from rising. Hemlock agrees it is a good idea and orders all of the bodies burned.
Habe's Sanitarium
A short ride by horseback finds the group outside the walls of the Sanitarium are casting long shadows caused by the late afternoon sun.
The sanitarium is a squat stone three story stone building, only windows are visible on the ground level. A long porch leads up to a stout wooden door serving as the main entrance.
Matthias Vale |
Matthias keeps his eyes open and his mouth closed, as he observes everything about the asylum.
Scoria the Stalwart |
Scoria glances around the sanatorium, looking in particular for any scalable parts of the exterior, along with any windows that a person might be able to climb inside.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
DM-Valkur |
After a few moments of pounding on the door, you hear the heavy door being unbolted from the inside. The door opens slowly to revel a huge hulking half-ogre brute with purplish warty skin. He is dressed in black leather armor.
"Heyo wut ye wat her?", he looks around and shrugs his massive shoulders, "dropoaf sumbudy?"
Scoria, it looks like all of the ground level windows are barred, and the upper levels have no windows. It is possible that an opening could be found on the roof if you climbed up.

Matthias uses Diplomacy! 1d20 ⇒ 3 It's super effective!
Matthias clears his throat and steps beside Bel'Tanis. "Sir, I am a freelance alienist in pursuit of a murderer and you have in your posession a man of clearly disturbed mind who witnessed a homicide. I need to interview him. Kindly allow us inside and fetch the persons in charge of this asylum posthaste."
DM-Valkur |
The half-ogre looks at Matthias with a confused look, "Wut, no dropoaf? Yu wnt doktur Habe?"
The ogre then opens the door fully and invites the party into a small visiting chamber with a desk dominating most of the room. A decorative rope hangs next to the south door, it runs up into the ceiling. Another door is on the opposite side of the south door. The ogre shambles over to the rope and pulls on it. You then hear the sound of a gong. The ogre then flashes a toothy smile, "Gung, doktur, hur hur."
Matthias Vale |
"Charm. Charm and directness always works." Matthias announces as they're lead inside.
Thaddeus Pruitt |
Thaddeus was about to open his mouth to speak, thinking how to be clear and effective for the likely dim-witted half-ogre, but Matthias does his part before he gets a chance. He scrunches up his face, but accepts the fact that at least it worked. He makes a mental note to try and find a way to keep Matthias from 'helping' so often.
Thaddeus Pruitt |
Worried that he might not get a chance before Matthias speaks up, Thaddeus rushes out his explanation. "Doctor Habe, I presume? I'm terribly sorry for the intrusion upon your work, but we are here representing the city of Sandpoint and are conducting an investigation. We were informed that you are treating a man here that was recently witness to a crime. We request access to speak with this man as soon as possible to get to the bottom of our case. Might we be allowed the opportunity.?"
Diplomacy 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
I'm back from my trip.
Work computer connection is wonky, but if we got the crazy man's name, I use it so he knows who I'm talking about.
Matthias Vale |
No sooner has Matthias opened his mouth to explain the circumstances of their visit than Thaddeus hastily speaks and beats him to it. Matthias shrugs and nods along. "It is a matter of utmost importance, Doctor. I daresay life and death!"
DM-Valkur |
The doctor looks over the group and fidgets a bit, "Oh you want to see Grayst, who was found at the scene of the murder the other day?"
He then gives a stern look to the dim witted half-ogre, "Fetch the patient! NOW!"
The ogre shrugs and pulls his massive bulk through the door and deeper in the hospital.
Doctor Habe then adjusts his glasses, " He should be back in a moment."
Matthias Vale |
Matthias smiles knowingly at the doctor. "So, Doctor, how many of the disturbed does this asylum currently hold?"
Thaddeus Pruitt |
Sense Motive on the Doctor (for being so tight-lipped) 1d20 ⇒ 9
Thaddeus feels like the answer was a little too guarded and elusive, considering the harmless nature of the question, "Good Doctor, my colleague was not requesting names of any of your patients, or even a discussion of whatever maladies the patients may possess. He is merely curious about numbers. Think of it from a logistical standpoint. He only asked how many you treat at this facility. Maybe for the sake of whether you may or may not be over or understaffed, or whether your facilities are adequate to perform the work you do here. Knowing his line of academia, I would almost venture to guess he would be willing to volunteer to work with you, but that is not my place to say."
Diplomacy 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
DM-Valkur |
Thaddeus you are not sure why he's being so nervous. Maybe he is naturally a nervous person?
Habe shrugs at Thaddeus, "I run my hospital the way I choose, I'm not looking for additional staff."
Suddenly the door opens and the half-ogre pushes an insane looking man through the door into the office. The man looks feral and wears no clothes except a restraining jacket to keep his arms pinned to his torso.
"The teeth sooo shaaarp," he then proceeds to run his tongue over his teeth with seem unnaturally pointed and sharp for a human. Blood then runs down his mouth, " Mmm tasty!"
DM-Valkur |
The doctor fixes a nervous gaze at Bel'Tanis, "Hes been driven quite insane by his ordeal. He speaks nonsense and has started to hate the light of the sun."
He then adds, "I wouldn't touch him..."
Grayst continues to wiggle and squirm in an unnatural way in his straight-jacket.
"The teeth and razor so sharp, I once saw a snail crawl against the edge...so sharp."
Thaddeus Pruitt |
Thaddeus looks at the man, concern on his face and frustration, "Do you know if he is able to answer any of our questions, Doctor?"
While awaiting a response, he looks at the crazy man, and speaks clearly and slowly. "Grayst? Is that your name? Can you tell us who attacked you? Do you know why?"
Diplomacy 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Bel'Tanis |
As Thaddues addresses Grayst, Bel'Tanis' indignation gets the better of him as his ire rises with the doctor, "Driven insane? He's hardly even a man any longer! Look at him! What happened to him, doctor? What really happened to him? Is this your doing? So help me if it is..." The thought that someone so traumatized could be taken advantage of spurs Bel'Tanis onward as a faint, telltale light begins to swirl within his eyes.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Scoria the Stalwart |
Know Religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Scoria circles around and looks at the crazed man, one hand on the hilt of her temple sword. She's quite ready to put the man down if she has any reason to suspect that he's turning into the undead, and will not hesitate to lop his head off immediately.
Matthias Vale |
"Fascinating. He appears to be suffering some sort of de-evolution, as if he were becoming more animal than man. Grayst, tell us about the person who did this to you."
DM-Valkur |
Dr. Habe shrinks in front of Bel'Tanis, "I'm doing nothing...I...need...money...the....necro."
Habe quickly goes silent and points down to the floor.
Khrondak you are not sure what is happening to Grayst.
Scoria however you think he may be in the beginning stages of turning into a ghoul.
Gayst takes a wild snap with his mouth full of fangs towards Matthias, "Razors soooo sharp, lovely, yessss. The razor man embraced me, now chosssen."
Bel'Tanis |
Bel'Tanis' eyes narrow dangerously as he nods in understanding. "Show us. NOW." Though the command is a harsh whisper, there is no compromise in the young aasimar's tone. He shakes his head in disgust, his wavy, dark hair bouncing with the motion. As he waits for the Doctor to hop into action, he casts a glance to the others. There's no question to what Bel'Tanis is thinking, the sudden shift in his expression clearly shows he is spoiling for a fight.
Matthias Vale |
"Razor man? Tell me more about this razor man." Matthias says, careful to avoid the snapping teeth.
Scoria the Stalwart |
Scoria doesn't hesitate - her sword swings automatically as the man snaps at Matthias, to cleave his head off in one quick and painless stroke - better to put him down before he could become a danger to everyone.
So, as he's bound and helpless, would this count as a coup de grace attack? I'll roll an attack roll just in case, with regular and critical damage.
Temple Sword Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Crit Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Fort Save to survive if coup de grace (10+damage dealt): 18.
Khrondak Iron Forged |
Sense Motive to get a sense of what Scoria is about to do: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
If first check is successful, then this is the initiative check to react first to Scoria's attack and get Grayst out of harm's way: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Thaddeus Pruitt |
Thaddeus, also wanting to stop Scoria, but like usual he does so with words, "Scoria, No! He may be vile and corrupted by dark influences, but he is currently our only lead to the man that did this. If we can in any way dig through his mad speech and get what we need, it is more than we have. I say stay your blade."
Turning to the Doctor, Thaddeus scowls, anger evident on his features, "What is this talk of money and necro... mancy, mancer? You would be best advised to loosen your tongue, as I am of the more reasonable of the group, and it seems you have already angered my companion."
DM-Valkur |
Okay I'm going to handle Scoria's coup de grace attack and Khrondak's attempt at intervention as a perception check on Khrondak's part to notice. Since Scoria didn't say anything first and she is a very calm character, I'd don't feel that anybody would have had much time to react to the sudden attack. I'll make it a perception check dc 20. And then initiative!
Khrondak Perception
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Scoria Initiative
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Khrondak notices that Scoria is drawing her sword to attack the proto-ghoul. He manages to shove him out of the way. Scoria's sword only finds air where Grayst used to stand. He now writhes and contorts on the floor. "hmm sssword so sharp."
Doctor Habe looks extremely frightened, he whispers quietly, "now he knows, prepare for his wrath."
Matthias Vale |
Matthias tries to stay calm while the scuffle occurs. He turns back to the witness. "Tell me about the razor man. Tell me what he looks like."
Scoria the Stalwart |
The stonemason looks somewhat perplexed by the fact that she missed. She looks at Thaddeus and Khrondak in bafflement. "He's becoming a ghoul. We must put him down now before he can cause any more harm to others. Any further questioning of him is pointless and life-threatening to everyone in this room. You cannot reason with or interrogate a monster."
Somewhat annoyed by having to actually explain all of this, she attempts another coup de grace attack on the fallen man. A clean kill to end his suffering was what she was going for here.
Sword Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
CDG Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
If you still want to stop her after she'd taken the time to explain her actions (Entirely unnecessary in her judgment) just go ahead and get in front of her. Course, that does put you in ankle biting distance to a ghoul.
Khrondak Iron Forged |
Khrondak steps between Scoria and Grayst, quickly drawing the klar and using it to parry the blow. "Enough, Scoria! This creature is barely a threat to anyone right now—more of a nuisance than anything else! In time, we'll see what becomes of him. Right now, Thaddeus wishes to trade words with the man, and he shall." His voice and gaze are stern, and he swings his head from one side to another in an almost unperceptible manner. Such a cowardly attack!, he condemns her in his mind, outraged.
DM-Valkur |
After hearing Midori speak, Grayst stops writing on the floor and suddenly lucid he looks to Midori, "The razor man said you would visit me here. His lordship made it so. My dear he has a place for you, a special place in his kingdom. I'm so jealous I can not lie. I have the message, oh dear I hope I haven't forgot it, he would be very upset. What was...it."
Grayst then returns to writhing on the ground.
The suddenly he stops again and looks at Midori, " No wait I remember, the master will be pleases with Grayst. He says if you come to his lordship and join his pack, he will end the harvest in your honor."
Thaddeus Pruitt |
Anything from the Doctor, based on what I asked him in my last post?
"Thank you, Brother Iron-forged.", he whispers as he pats the man on the shoulder. Thaddeus is worried about the conflict arising between Scoria and Khrondak, but he is thankful for the big man's presence of mind to help him in this instance. With the crazy man talking, he may have just gotten the lead he was looking for, "He wants her to join him? Where? She cannot reach him if she does not know where he is. Was it where he attacked you? If so, where were you exactly?"
Turning to Scoria he admonishes, "The man is not a member of the undead yet. If he can be cured of this ailment, then I must do what I can for him. Not everything is an absolute, and I worry about the reaction you would have if one of us suffered this malady and had not yet turned. Would you be so hasty to put us down if it were Brother Iron-forged, or Bel'Tanis, or me in this situation? I would hope not."
Matthias Vale |
Matthias stands up as Grayst makes his pronouncement. He studies Midori, then Grayst, ignoring the crisis of personality happening around him. "Why do you call him 'His Lordship' Grayst?"
DM-Valkur |
"Because he is the lordship, soon you all will see the razor man in all his glory."
Doctor Habe sits in the corner of his office with a horrific look on his face that Bel'Tanis may strike him.
"He's down below, I had no choice you see...he has money. I need it to cure the sick, I didn't know about his nefarious ways. But I'm afraid it is too late now, we are all dead."
Matthias Vale |
Matthias frowns. "I doubt things will go well for this razor man when we meet. I daresay this razor man will perish in a terrible fashion. I've seen this band kill terrible things. Your razor man will perish, as all men must."
Bel'Tanis |
"How do we get down below, doctor? Out with it!" Bel'Tanis tries his best to maintain the pressure on the doctor and ignore the worsening situation with Grayst and the others, but it's plain that their bickering amongst themselves is causing his ire to rise even further as light continues to play in the corners of his eyes.
Bel'Tanis |
Bel'Tanis turns to the large half-ogre with sudden authority in his voice, "Lock him back up in a cell by himself. Now." In the next breath he draws his falchion and looks at the others and whispers harshly, "Stop squabbling! There are worse problems then Grayst down below!" Then, without waiting to see if any of them comply or not, the young aasimar hurries toward the workroom and the stairs down.
