The mummy lord speaks as he leads you to the encampment:
"I was High Priest during the Reign of Pharaoh Har-Aha "the Unifier". It was our shared dream you see, it was He who would unify the upper and lower Nile and all its peoples; while I, would seek out and unify the separate pieces of my lords body. I had found and collected many, my quest was nearing completion even as Pharaoh neared completion of his task. <with great anger> But; here upon the plains of Uru-Xerzees, in the shadow of the Xerophon, in the ridge of the belly spine of Ur-Set Katu-Tharsis "The World Dragon" was I beset by traitors! Cloaked followers of Set; Wild Bear-Zhirt men of the North; and the Blue Tattoed Celts led by the forces of Warlord Tarterexies, Prime of Cronus.
you see; it was then the I! figured out that this destruction of my lord was but a chit in the plan of some insidious god with the strength and ability to bring an array of forces from many lands to bear against my elite troop. They had numbers as the scarabs that swarm the dead in the deep desert; but we had eternal love and faith; thus we stood. I tell you my allies; many of the dead interned here in these tombs, which came much later; were those that died on that battlefield that day, more than half; thousands upon thousands <he stops and look at you with mad burning eyes> We slew them in droves for seven days and thus then the Dragon Set did swallow the Sun and Battle Ra; thus in the darkness did we fall, but my last sight was that Ra and thown off the World Eater and vanquished him; thus was I not released in death; but to continue on to finish my quest..
Know you well that I know the symbols of those who struck against us, our enemies and the enemies of any who would live in peace against the raging storm of Chaos."
----------
as you pass the troops and enter the gate; one thing is abundantly clear; these are killers with a purpose so clear; so dominate that you can feel it; so strong it keeps them from the sleep of death; these must have been fanatical men in life; changed by the crucible of the events of their death.
----------
as you pass the wall and the gate; you are outside the pyramid; a great feeling of Goodness pervades, any of you with taint; uncertainty, questionable deeds, and such; anything neutral or evil; will feel increasingly uncomfortable.
you are taken to some tents; these tents have no sides; only tops and poles made of various bones tied together. The mummy lord gestures for you to sit upon cushions, and undead slave skeletons bring you water and various fruits as a first course; they will wash your feet and face and oil your hair if you let them; they will clean your armor and such; as you would expect as a guest in an Egyptian Lords encampment.
you see a small conclave of 5 undead priest(ess)' approaching.
----------
you may speak and converse as needed.

Being unnerved by being served by Undead, and the uneasiness I have from the corruption I gained from the Gnolls Halberd. I politely refuse the foods and drinks being offered to me, and stay quiet. I honestly wouldn't have any clue what to say anyway considering the only experience I have had with Egypt or Egyptians are Nebebit, and Kemnebi.
Kemnebi 'Djal Ibenbast' |
I'm Baaack! Happy New Year! :)
Kemnebi seems to be relaxed, smiling as if visiting home one moment, then uncomfortable the next, looking around for something. He seems genuinely confused by these swings.
He relaxes as best he is able, partaking of the food and drink offered with graciousness, automatically repeating all of the little tiny rituals that go with even casual dining in the upper crust of Egypt.
I am presuming that all of Kem's little 'entanglements' would cause him to be uncomfortable at times. While he DOES desire power, for the moment it is still a desire for desire's sake. He believes that with enough power he would be free of (what he perceives) as the entanglements and machinations of the priests to use him. He still has no 'obvious' goal such as destroying anyone, or ruling a kingdom, etc. He is still a kid with a powerful gift just tryin to figure out how to use it.
Fox of Silver |
Fox is obviously out of her social element, so she watches the others to try to determine proper behavior. In the mindlink, she tries to concentrate on just speaking to Durr so she doesn't fill the others' heads with chatter.
Mindlink Durr, do you know the proper form? No, I don't think that's appropriate. Yes, I'm sure if you touched it, you should keep it on your plate. Yes, even if you decided you know would never again in a million years touch it. Keep it! Oh, it looks like Kemnebi knows what he's doing... part of the time. *sigh*
For the most part, she does nothing but sit quietly, watch, and listen.

no need to presume, by the short stick of celestial judgement you have probably the most taint in the group
an that note:
carrying, touching, coming in contact with items such as evil artifact give taint on your soul.
Association with beings from other planes not of your alignment nor the alignment of the one judging you; is taint on your soul; the close the contact; the more the taint.
entanglements with Fae Courts; is taint.
Self doubt is taint
any evil act of anger; murder, killing, lust, envy, malice, greed and so on; are taint.
Gaing a point of alignment not of your chosen alignment is taint.
encountering objects of power like the Gate to the Netherworld; is taint.
Most undead give taint; like the ghost.
spells from evil clerics and mages can give taint depending on the descriptor.
not following the precepts of your chosen religon; ie; clerics of Seker must always wear some pure white clothing that must always be the representation of thier purity; if they loos it or it gets stained; they may not cast spells until they get Atonement.
----------------
now; none of this is to say this or that; it just is; it is not a reflection on your playing ability; just that taint exists in the world and that adventurers have more oppurtunity than most to pick some up, which is one of the reason most normal people fear adventurers. It is really difficult to stay pure; takes a lot of work and constant cleansing.
I'm Baaack! Happy New Year! :)

The five priests set stools on the ground in a semicircle crecent of the moon <elves would know this is the exact phase of the moon at this time>. The priests are far enough away from each other to give some privacy.
the mummy lord: " Ah, my bretheren are ready; you may each go to them as you will to cleanse the burden upon your souls; some of you have heavy weights that must be lifted lest the Artifact of my Beloved Lord strike out at you in closer proximity."
"Pride of the soul is like a man who has eaten shards of glass; it cuts from the inside and turns ones attention away from what is outside of himself until he is the center of his attention and thus dies alone."

Apologies for the absence, I've been gone on vacation and not really checking the computer. Back now though. Congratulations on the big event Vale!
Caerwyn has been following the party, looking with wonder at the powerful undead army, and wondering at the contradiction between vile undeath and the aura of good that exists in the area.
In the Mindlink: "Good undead? How is this even possible? I don't know much about this, but this is certainly a first for me."
Kemnebi 'Djal Ibenbast' |
Kemnebi pipes up at Dom's question. Despite his own obvious issues with the place, the feline mage is apparently unable to resist the chance to demonstrate his knowledge.
"Well, undeath is not always the result of evil works or desires. Many undead are the result of simple magical formulae. In some cases, Lichdom for example, many mages use it as tool to continue their research long after they would have otherwise been forced to quit due to extreme age or death. In my homeland there are many examples of good humanoids choosing lichdom or similar procedures to prolong their service to the Pharaoh."
"Of course, due to the generally unpleasant nature of most undead, and the fact the Powers themselves don't all agree that undeath itself isn't evil, well, it isn't common. In this case it seems that the state was a gift so that these individuals could continue their service." He replies in the mindlink.

Caerwyn
in your head in a somewhat mocking but serious tone; a very powerful and clear voice inquires: <this conversation takes no time; none; so you miss nothing; is faster than thought as if instantly imprinted on you.
"What is the nature of Good and Evil; What is the nature of life; where is the line between living and dead drawn; are you alive? are you sure and if you are; what is the meaning of your life?
As you gaze upon yonder priest wrapped in tattered finery; what perspective do you have upon his life; that of service to that which he loves beyond the viel of life and death perhaps? Can any but a diety or similar power bind one to ones oath beyond such constaints as mortal essence? Thus you may begin upon a path different from one you have always trod; grow wings and fly to another path; yet still within constaints; why though; be there constraints be they mortal, moral or even on mode of travel; why young friend; why? thus in the determined direction of curiosity that brings either undertanding and wisdom; or death and isolation."

"All Liches be vile evil; believe it, but in my studies I have heard of many undead that are not evil; take a Revanant for example, one sent back by ones diety to exact just revenge. I have also heard of certain so called Saintly beings; sent back after death in which they died in service to Good; but unequal be their souls and to heavy for the upper realms; come back for a time to right certain inequities. Know this if you learn anything here; the state of ones soul or spirit is always held to final judgement by some diety against the weight of cosmic need as a corollary; thus one can find shelter in such beings; but one can also conscript their own lives through arcane formula, though there is a diety for that as well."

The one who speaks to you too has you relate your story for the few days; then points out the taint in your aura; then cleanses it with an Atonement spell, sactified water sprinkled on you; and perscribes that your taint goes deep from the time carrying the unholy sword; so perscibes that you separate yourself from the group and servants bring up 5 casks; the Priest leads you to isolated spot within a holy circle; gestures for you to enter; the servants place the five casks; about 2 gallons each; the priest seals the circle with a spell and directs you:
"though it be a tribulation; you must drink all of that Water of Life from the Holy Staff of Living Grain. All of it must you consume as the taint runs deeply in you and your life force must be restored and aura cleansed; do not leave or cause any to break the circle lest you fail until your task is finished; spill not any as you need it all.
As for you freind; we can do nothing; our spells cannot touch him; he is not in a plane of existance that we can contact.
I believe that when you leave; our entire essembledge will go with you; at least that is how I read the signs; perhaps that will be help enough.
as for your last question; we do not understand; I believe your words lost in translation; I am sorry and deeply regret it"
he leaves; a servant stays with you standing very still.
the casks are easy to open and the servants have left you a large silver, ornate cup. Opening the cask and taking your first drink; it is a fine brew of best ale; not strong like Bugmans; but very very good and cool.

Like Fox; you are asked to relate the story of the last few days; then are granted a spell of atonement as the preist points out minor taints in your arua; they are removed; the strongest taint coming from your Fae Challenge; but nothing requiring more than the spell. After which; you too are feeling very positive and restored as many weights are lifted from your spirit.
"I am in need of cleansing if you are willing..."
Seeing Kosan take the initiative in the conversation with the Undead I continue to watch uncomfortibly. Exspecially at the mention of Liches.

Surprised at the relief she's feeling, Fox sketches a very sincere bow to the holy one that assisted her.
She steps away to let another take their turn and looks to see where Kemnebi is. "Kemnebi, would you allow me to pick your brain, so to speak? I believe I could definitely learn from you about the arcane arts." As she starts down the path to the mystic theurge, I think it would makes sense for her to see if she could learn from the more experienced caster.

Ah, OK, thank you. And gratz again on joining the ranks of us hitched folk! :) I hope it was a great ceremony, and have a great life! :D
Kemnebi strokes the centipede necklace idly, nodding as if responding to one of the others comments.
Vale:
'Thank you my little companion. I wonder. Well, I wonder many things, but I wonder WHY a Lich? When there are so many mystical and diefic ways to extend life or afterlife? SOmething to ponder.'
Kemnebi reaches up to scratch Hathor behind the ears. His familiar allows the gesture as it is only her due. He peeks into a pocket of his robes, where the little kitten has curled up to sleep after all of the recent excitement.
"I should take this show on the road. 'Kemnebi, Mage most mighty, and his magnificent menagerie'!" He mutters to himself with a small smile.
He continues to eat and drink, watching the others with interest as they partake of the priests services. He is obviously thinking hard about the need to cleanse evil influences from the group, and weighing it against the need to keep the aid he has gathered against future use. And the possibility of ticking off any of his new 'friends'.
He chats happily with Fox when she returns, asking her about her time with the priests, and observing Kosan's cleansing ritual with a combination of bemusement and shock.

The priest listens to you story as you gloss over events to quickly sum up the last few days; foes you faced and items and occurances; then when looking upon your aura; seems concerned "yes, I see these things of which you speak; but some of these things I have not seens since I was living, are you having familia trouble, that with family or old friends; these wounds are particularly...disturbing to your aura. To speak of these things will release it. The taint of this cut from the evil Halbert is very strong; but not a problem"
he pours some holy water on your brow and sprinkles some on you; he gives you a cup of Water of the Living Grain; upon drinking it you will feel more relaxed, joyous and less troubled. When you are done speaking; he will cast Atonement; and you will be cleansed and feel purified of spirit; your taint removed.
Nebibit approaches one of the priests In order to undertake a cleansing ritual herself.
Valegrim |
To clarify, does this mean your going to one of the priests to be cleansed?
Astinos strides forth, his aura radiating around him. His tale is one of purpose, of the work entrusted to the group to defend against that which would seek to consume all life.

Greeks and Egyptians have been allies a long time; trade partners and like that; this is before the time of Alexander the Great; so Greece doesnt rule Egypt. So ;that said; the two diefic pantheons are in alliance as well, though the Egyptians are bit more stable and less chaotic and self serving than the Grecian ones. So; when your in a region controlled by another pantheon; divine magic is either greatly inhibited or cut off unless there is a pact between pantheons; also; a cleric from another pantheon would not offer such a thing to someone outside of his own pantheon as their own dieties would be generally offended. That is all pretty much game mechanics though; from your perspective, it would be appropriate to determine what diety is granting these spells to determine if they are allies thus it being beneficial. Basically, all the Lawful Good dieties are allies. Your diety is CG, though you are LG and as that is only one step removed; that is ok, but it means that LG dieties of allied realms and their followers have greater respect of you. Osiris; of whom these are followers; is a Lawful Good diety; and stauch ally of Zeus and Geia, and it should seem to you that perhaps it is in fact Geia that is being imprisoned; she being Mother Earth. Osiris is the diety of plants and living things; so very closely tied. Now some of the plan of the bad guys should be coming clear to you; kill the greatest diety of plants and living things; then kill the Earth. From your diety; you know in your heart that these guys are Good and can be Trusted. They are your allied and will not turn on you. But, as Athena is the diety of Wisdom; she sends feelings of wariness, for in every group there is often a hidden wolf and servant of evil.
ok; more game mechanic; you must remove your taint and remain pure always. this is the bread and meat of being a paladin; in the world but not of the world; removed from corruption; the Fist of their Diety in the mortal plain. If you remain to long with taint or get to much; you can loose your paladin status, and to get it back; you would need an atonement from a 12th level or higher diety of your Faith. At this time of death and destruction; that might be really hard; probably a very good idea to take advantage of this boon of cleansing.

What does their specific cleansingprocess indicate to me
Valegrim |
Caerwyn; your cleaning will be very normal; you dont have much of anything.
Astinos; have to read back and do a bit of research on yours cause my memory never was that good.
I step forward following my companions' example. "I am too ready to be cleansed."
Llvenoc |
anyway; what do you all do after you come back from cleansing; and There are host of ah...people...here to talk to.
Even though this is a different faction. I am still not sure if I would feel comfortable starting up a conversation with any of the undead. Granted I would probably respond to them if they approached me.
Kemnebi 'Djal Ibenbast' |
Kemnebi watches the rituals with interest, but at a distance. He ignores any pointed looks he may be getting from Nebibit as he contemplates his situation,...
Kemnebi engages a couple of the locals in polite conversation after the meal. He is trying to get a feel for this unusual collection of undead. Although at first glance he is fairly certain that they are what they say, and still motivated by the same will and desires as they had in life, (and NOT some dark need to feed on the living!)
Inbetween conversations, and watching the others with interest, Kemnebi can be seen chewing on his furry lip. He has the universal look of a man who knows what he has to do. But would rather launch himself from a catapult into an invading army than do it.
Vale: Does Kemnebi have any clue what will happen to him and his various 'agreements/friendships' if he willingly undergoes cleansing? He doesn't want to endanger the mission, and is willing to (and wants to) undergo cleansing because he wants to ensure that his decisions are his own. But he is beginning to realize that he has made several deals he may not have fully understood with people he REALLY doesn't want to tick off! He also doesn't want to be unduly influenced by priests either. (He's had enough of that back home!) He currently sees it as a "Darned if I Do or Don't' situation right now. ;P
Kemnebi asks one of the priests what is needed to heal Aahz. He wants to help the boy, and is obviously upset that his earlier attempts met with abject failure.
Valegrim |
About that; hmm; you can; you probably should get together and review the mission and priorities as different people have different information and you do have definate time that you will be to late; so from that you should communally make a judgement call on when to move out.
Fox's priority is to take this opportunity to learn from Kemnebi (and prepare new spells). Am I correct in my understanding that we will have enough downtime to rest and prepare spells?
Valegrim |
ok all; this is a roleplay situation; just walk up to someone you think likely and introduce yourself; you may choose a warrior; priest or magus or servant as that is pretty much what you see here. So; rather than tell me that you talk to the locals; go talk to them.
thanks.
Nebibit speak with the locals at first to get a feel for the general situation.
Valegrim |
From a magus standpoint; there is nothing that happened that can adversely affect your spellcasting; the chaos rift might change it; but that would require testing; also various spells and magical energies attracts certain parasites, think brain moles and such; that are very hard to detect, that sap magic and pyschic energy and require cleansing. There is probably a lot of magic residue from all the battles you have been involved in as well as any planular shifts and that sort of thing can be tracks by various creatures and spells; but you only have a vague idea about such things.
about contracts and such you might be involved in; well, you might consider someone in the party or here are the temple to ask about it as you know such things exist, but as many of these you encountered are not your culture; you may be unaware of possible traps for the unwary; consider things like grim's nursery tales for instance.
Who will you speak to about Aahz
now dont get confused with this as a city or village; this is definately a military church encampment; the soilders seem to stand eternally vigilant out front; the priests and magi behind them; within these walls are sevants cleaning and polishing this small step pyramid and building things; you would assume that most of the priests, of which there is 7 and the magi; which there are 3; are the command group of this entire encampment though you would guess that whatever or whoever is in that Magus Tower at the entrance is not here in this group for whatever reason.
